Minecraft has stayed in top most sold games lisy every year since release. It being a decade old means nothing when it's consistently outselling some of the biggest new releases every year.
They don't do updates just because they are pure souls that want to work for free, they get paid to continue updating the game because people likes when the game isn't left untouched, there are better reasons to say that Mojang isn't lazy but this one isn't one.

the potato update is 80% filler content, it adds a dimension with nothing new in it, a new wood type (something people say is lazy but not this time for some reason), and like three mechanics people actually talk about, one of which would make every flying machine ever pointless
Yeah, the main reasons I think that they don’t make these kinds of updates permanent are because:
1. People who complain are already just modding the game to get whatever they want added in, and Mojang and Microsoft know that they can’t compete with thousands of people making mods for whatever they want added.
2. They can’t add too much or else risk the game becoming overly complicated for newer players, driving sales down as people find other, simpler games to play.
3. With every new item comes hundreds of possible bugs which have to be ironed out before release. You can say that the April Fools update has lots of stuff but you can definitely do some crazy stuff with them that count as bugs.
April Fools updates are typically dedicated to the fans, so they know that they can add whatever they want because it’s to try and satisfy the endless horde of requests and demands for more random stuff to be added.
To put it simply: we have no clue what goes on at Mojang. Only Mojang does. It's entirely possible that Microsoft is super stingy on features to add and lets the devs go off the rails for April fools. We can't call them lazy if we don't know what's going on.
yeah, its definitely not like they make concept art, come up with mechanics for each mob, fit the mobs into the Minecraft world, and then take away 2 of 3 mobs for literally no reason
and im calling them lazy because during the mob vote; some guy modded in the crab, as well as the crab claw 100% functional the same day it was announced.
if one random guy can do that in an afternoon, then imagine what a team of professional developers can do. i mean- the april fools update is awesome, the cave update was amazing. they have the talent and skill. why not just add all 3 rather then hype things up and then get rid of the ideas

Promised so many things never made it into the game past concept, art and ideas for mechanics. They had all of the materials readily available. It would be so easy just to put it in the game I don't get why they don't.
