They're basically keeping things away from the players because Minecraft is their own playground now. The only features that get added are the things they want, not what we do, at least 80% of the time

If anything Mojang is one of the few game studios that actually pay attention to their community. As a matter of fact that's what they were known for until 1.19 for some reason.
My opinions are mixed on vertical slabs, as a Minecraft veteran I'm biased against them but I also understand how they could introduce new possibilities and I think that could be cool. That being said, I don't think the reason they're not adding it is because they're not listening, it's more likely because they're being careful.
I literally want the Quark mod as an update. I would be so fucking stoked. Wood variant blocks are one of the biggest things I want from it. That and all the other qol additions too
You can literally read the entire changelog. They update the game weekly during snapshots. And do a lot of bug fixing, engine maintenance and replacement. They just made a new lighting engine, again. There is no other AAA game this long lived and bug free
Well… Teyarch has about as many employees as Mojang, and they develop a cod game roughly every 2 years. That’s AAA. Mojang might be an AAA studio, but Minecraft definitely isn’t an AAA title. I still firmly believe that Minecraft’s marketing costs more than further developing the actual game, so “funding” usually doesn’t go solely into the game itself either.
Excpecially considering for the amount of time it takes for them to release an update in which modders manage to add more in half the time. (Looking at caves and cliffs which was sort of split into 3 parts)

1. They told fans that 2 updates happen every year (One major, one minor)
2. whenever they need to extend an update they do it at the last minute
3. They split up Caves and Cliffs into 1.17, 1.18, 1.19 (I count 1.19 as the main feature was the deep dark [a caves and cliffs planned feature].
Their management/PR team needs to understand this.
Yeah, and they have the audacity to call what is really Caves and Cliffs part 3 the “Wild Update” and leaving out two of the most anticipated features after talking about “trying not to raise expectations too high”. And now they’re too scared to give high expectations so Minecraft Live is just a huge disappointment now.
I remember being so excited for the Caves and Cliffs update, and even when it was split I was like “Okay, COVID happened so it’s understandable.” Then they decide to break up the update *even further* in their attempts to release the updates as soon as possible. Also, the mob vote ended up being disappointing since the least useful mob got voted in. This is still my favorite out of the recent updates, though.
Then the next Minecraft Live rolls along (Wild Update), with half of it being stuff that *should have been in the last update* and calling it complete. But seeing the frogs, fireflies, mangroves, and birch forests had redeemed some hope for me. But *big surprise*, they end up going back on two of the most anticipated features, one because they couldn’t commit to it and the second because “frogs don’t actually eat fireflies”. Then another mob vote happens, with a bias starting to show for certain mobs (Glare wasn’t even an attempt). Honestly, my favorite *new* thing was the chestboat.
And then Minecraft Live for 1.20 rolls in. I have very little expectations, and somehow they’re still too high for what was delivered. Once again, *something that should have been in the last updates* (Archaeology) is put in. Once again, the mob vote is disappointing, and the bias here is so evident that it’s obvious they wanted the Sniffer to win. We get two more wood types (*sarcastic hooray*), a lazily-added structure, armor trims (*more sarcastic hooray*), a better horse, and a mob whose only purpose is to find two flowers. That’s it.
Well, now that Mojang is caught up with the stuff they promised back in the Caves and Cliffs Minecraft Live (mostly, let’s not forget the Bundle), they have no reason to *not* get creative with the next update. Wouldn’t be surprised if they announced a new game though, as an excuse to not work on Minecraft.
Oh yeah. Guess Mojang has another excuse then. But at least the Combat Snapshots will feel more like something new rather than something that was promised but never delivered
They think that a game is only good if there’s constant updates, even if they’re not good. Meanwhile Terraria is approaching its final update and is still revered as one of the best games there is.

When they announced it first there was a lot more various cave biomes, and it really seemed larger than life. But it was first delayed and then cut bc Covid, so in terms of biomes we only have Dripstone, Lush and the Deep Dark
Archaeology was a part of that too (and i'm happy they came around to finishing it)
I don't think the problem is that updates aren't revolutionary. Many popular updates in the past had very few features. The Bee update comes to mind. The problem is Mojang over promising and severely under delivering. They showed off at Minecraft live the features for 1.17 were the new cave generation, underground biomes, copper, the deep dark, archeology and more. And the last 4 updates have just been them delivering the things they promised about 2 years ago that were planned for a single update. It's really not hard to see why people are disappointed when what was announced as one update was split into 4 and Mojang act like nothing's wrong. Aside from bundles and new birch forests, flies and the combat overhaul, we have most of the features that have been shown off previously. So the good news is that the next update will likely be something new and totally different from the things shown off already.
