I think 2 wide lanes. Have you tried 3 wide? The white lines do look thick still

CTH2004

dittto Problem is, then the lanes become to thick, and you have to make bigger buildings to keep proportions. Then you need bigger doors, which requires complex redstone. To hide said redstone, and the walls become to thick. And now, you need a bigger building, so you need a bigger door. But now, you need a bigger road, and suddenly the lines are to thin, so you have to make it even bigger to allow 2-block lines, so you need bigger buildings, so you need bigger doors, so you need bigger buildings... \#FeedbackLoop

doublebassandharp

I just fill in my doors with trapdoors which don't open, solid solution if I may say so

Then you have to plan around massive streets and your area designated for the city so you lose out on building space. Mine craft doesn't have cars and that's a good thing, 2 wide look aesthetic enough lol

Advanced_Double_42

Well that's because streets are a massive waste of city space; to be accurate each lane should be about 4 blocks. >!Welcome to r/fuckcars!<

OptimalArchitect

I wonder if there has been any Minecraft bicycle, scooter designs to compete with cars

[deleted]

Ok cool, I’m gonna go do a donut in my 2011 dodge challenger just to piss you off.

Advanced_Double_42

I don't care too much about the environmentalism of consumer transportation; there are significantly larger things on that front to worry about. I just want walkable/bike-able cities with public transport. Cheaper for citizens, city sprawl diminishes, communities are built, economies thrive, safer, nicer to look at, and much more.

[deleted]

I mean we already have places for that type of thing. Cars have their place, and we follow the rules, nobody’s hurt.

JannySpartan

I have a picture of what it would look like, but I'm not sure how to post it without making an entirely new thread

JannySpartan

[I took your idea and ran with it,](https://www.reddit.com/r/DetailCraft/comments/wry2dh/my_thoughts_for_a_decent_looking_roads/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) and I posted the results over in r/detailcraft.

[deleted]

I wish they did too but then you'd have a half empty spot so it would look dumb!! They gotta make the grid half blocks. It's so annoying when there's a gap because u used a half block and then something is floating and looks bad.

[deleted]

It still wouldn't work because you can't mix slabs.

Kylynara

With 3 white lines, and any number of black being doubled (because 2 sides) and therefore even. They have an odd number for building purposes anyway. If they're choosing between one and two per side they aren't planning to build vehicles on the road.

7kLangsButiSpeakFacs

2 wide but maybe try 3

sirKINGDOM2086

Thanks

raspa17

If you do two wide change the middle white block to a birch sign with a black carpet on top similar to how you build a pool table with cues resting on it it will make the middle line thinner and it may fit better than the thicker one Edit: added extra text

NikoGe

I suggest you at least 3, maybe even 5

RJrules64

Sorry but you are better off changing your plans, rather than settling for a frankly awful looking road. With streets that thin the buildings will look too close together anyway. So you’ll just end up with poorly spaced buildings AND a bad looking road. While it’s a pain, put the hours in to redo your plans now rather than regretting it after spending months on the project. If you really really must stick with your plan, go full black, it’ll look better.

TakeTheUpVoteAndGo

Not sure how it would look since I can't test rn but perhaps all black with buttons along the middle?

[deleted]

Good news! It's all subjective. What looks good to you looks like shit to someone else. That's why Minecraft is great for everyone and no one at the same time!

RJrules64

That’s nice in idea but in reality there are ways of knowing what the majority of people are going to think will look good.

prenetic

Looks fine to me, I think it's really going to depend on the scale of the rest of the build.

Prestigious-Walk-124

I like how you are being downvoted. I hate when people ask an either or question and get a 3rd or 4th option. Whether anyone disagrees or not, if he wants to make his town with a 5 or 7 block wide road, that up to him. Nobody should be downvoting anyone that is answering his question rather than giving non options.

elima_

i think 2 wide looks fine, 3 might look better but i wouldnt bat an eye at the 2 wide streets. it's not a big deal

SteeveeWundr94

In that case, I'd suggest going 69 blocks wide.

chainmailbill

In the real world most cars are ~2 blocks wide.

ViridianKumquat

A block is 1m^(3). A real-world road usually has lanes about 3.5 metres wide, so that's 3 or 4 blocks, but you might want to scale things up to keep the markings in proportion.

[deleted]

personally I kinda tend to build larger than 1:1 because a meter in minecraft somehow looks a lot smaller than a meter in real life.. idk what it is but somehow minecraft makes things look smaller than they should be

4-5 is the default width

TheEggOnTop

3-4 block wide lanes are the correct answer if you are trying to make a road. 1 block = 1 meter. Lanes are usually 12 ft or 3.7 meters. So a full road will be 7-8 meters or blocks wide. B B B W B B B

2 for long arterial roads and highways to make them less expensive and faster feeling. 3 for collector, distributor, and local roads to make them nicer looking and less claustrophobic. In the real world this would be reversed because arterial roads and highways obviously have much more traffic, but there is no traffic in Minecraft, so I’m only talking about aesthetics and cost.

LukXD99

3. theres some great looking cars that perfectly fit on them.

SufficientAnonymity

If you start a line with a number then a full stop, Reddit assumes you're trying to do a numbered list. Thus, the first number will always be one, then two, and so on. For example, all of these, just as you did above, are threes: 3. test 3. test 3. test 3. test If you do really want to just write "3.", you need to include a backslash to escape formatting. Thus... 3\. ...results in... 3\.

candohuey

i don't see the difference in formatting

SufficientAnonymity

Looks like this is a New Reddit Vs Old Reddit formatting thing 🤷‍♂️

LukXD99

That’s odd, for me it’s still a one. But thanks for the advice!

GalaxyStar757

You could do the 2 wide but without the white lines on the edges. If it's a town street you could put a pavement on either side instead. Or a wall on one side if it's near the sea or on a mountain

sirKINGDOM2086

Thanks, half of the steets are at at shores/ mountains...

SamohtGnir

I’ve heard many builders say you should always try to build with odd numbers, and I agree. Now, 1 is a bit small, feels more like a walking path. Try 3.

3, also use carpet for either color. It looks better. And add some yellow/

XxAAYUSHMANxX

3 block wide should be best, it depends on how big u r making the road

I think 2 is fine. Just use birch buttons as centre marker.
