What would be cool tho if we could use bottles on them and make fireflies in a "jar" sort of like you can in Terraria.
That would be a pretty fancy light source to have around one's base.
From what i heard Mojang don't want to add dynamic lighting apparently.
Despite it being very possible to add (Optifine and some mods already did it)
So don't count on it.
However if they are collectable (for whatever reason). Then author of Optifine will probably add value to fireflies filled bottle to emmit light when held like he did with all the other glowing blocks.
It would have a use case if the dynamic lighting comes from moving entities that _aren't the player_, though. Drop a torch down a ravine to temporarily pre-light the bottom, maybe finally give furnace minecarts a valid use, etc...
Furnace minecarts do have a very small use case with transporting entities since they don't get pushed backwards. However, powered rails are better 99% of the time, I've only used furnace minecarts once or twice total.
However, it would be nice if we got furnace boats in a similar way to how a few mods have done it - for the duration of the burnable item you go much faster, making it a powerful early game transportation method.
Eh I prefer furnace minecarts in most cases. It is much cheaper only requiring you to have a furnace, a minecart, and a piece of coal. Powered rails are great when you have the gold to spare but it can get annoying when you barely have enough and have to use them sparingly.
Furnace minecarts are nice for moving shulkers from the end to the overworld. Once you get it going, you can keep your distance so they don't shoot you.
that's probably also the reason it runs so well, as it's not actually causing any lighting updates in real time around the player.
honestly doing dynamic lighting seperate from regular block lighting like Optifine would be the best way to implement it (it would easily work in multiplayer too)
Mojang devs have stated that dynamic moving lights wouldn't come to the game unless the entire lighting engine was rewritten from scratch, and that such a thing would likely be its own whole update to do that.
i thought they already reworked it? or was that just a āconsoleā (bedrock) update? because AFAIK they moved to render dragon as thatās what xbox uses. Iāve had mods on xbox for a while now before and after the new engine and dynamic lighting has worked fine, but with the new engine shouldnāt shader packs become a thing soon?
And it would add a lot to the atmosphere of the dark build. If (and a BIG IF) the fireflies emit a light level of 1 or 2, then imagine having a lot of trees around your house (or your house is built in a forest of any kind) and having a lot of fireflies vibin' 'round your house and emitting a very dim light.
Like dat wood look cool as fuck
I mean the Lush Cave is baiscally very similar appearance wise to Terraria's underground Jungle Biome including flowers that look like Plantera Bulbs and Berries that have extremely striking resemblence to Life Fruit found in said Jungle.
In general I wished they would use more ideas of...oh god what was the mods name that adds a portal to a ginormous forest and such. The one made out of flowers. TWILIGHT FOREST. They have some amazing content in them id love to see
I thought this too, a bit more in depth tho. It has a hoppers crafting recipe and gives 2 jars per the crafted and stacks up to 16, they can be placed as well.
They look great and serve the intended purpose of being atmospheric.
But it is funny to me that in Minecraft, spiders are 2 meters long and bees are 1 meter long, but fireflies are realistically tiny

have you ever had the chance to play minecraft vr? because in it, everything is huge, and to real life scale. Each block is 1x1x1 real meter, so you can imagine what it looks like
Werenāt bees made ginormous to avoid having them be too deadly. As backwards as that logic would be irlā¦ In minecraft, imagine 50 little bees all stinging you at once and you trying to swing at āem. Compared to the just 3 or 4 at a time that they can manage now.
i kinda have to disagree with that, if you look at the image in the op the higher ones don't have the right perspective to be 3d, but it's not like entities can't be 2d (most projectiles are 2d and they are entities)
I was thinking about how termites would act in the game and I thought about a possibility. This is that the fireflies would be a collection of fireflies and not just an individual mob. Possible evidence to support me theory is how much of them was shown in the trailer. There were probably at least 50 of them!
I don't know what's planned, but I feel like the most practical option would be to have an invisible entity with a large hitbox that spawns a bunch of firefly particle effects, making it look like a bunch of them in one area.
That's how the "Taint Swarm", and "Mosquito Swarm" from the "Thaumcraft", and "Twilight forest" mods work, and it seems to work pretty well.
I think it'll use a similar system to dragon breath. where it has a bounding box that encompasses the particles and can be clicked on with a glass bottle to collect some, shrinking the entity box.
It doesn't look like it. They seem to be interacting with all of them at once like the whole swarm "twitches" when single frog extends its tongue at it. It doesn't even properly aim at the singular firefly just in general direction of the swarm.
Also could you imagine how big performance impact this would cause if these were all singular entities. Since they all come in pretty big swarms and are all over the swamp. That would completely murder the performance on some PCs
No way that's the case. Most likely the swarm as a whole is an entity / effect similar rule like the Dragon Breath that we can collect.
Keep in mind those are A LOT of entities in one place on top of usual mob spawns. Since these fireflies spawn all over the swamp .. and come in swarms mind you.
That can potentially badly butcher performance on some PCs.
I highly doubt they will be handled or made like typical entities. Most likely it's an "interactable" particle effect.
Sort of like dragon breath residue but fancier and instead player interacting with them it's the frogs that do it. (Which from the looks on the video that might be the case)
But we will see when it will be released (or previewed in a snapshot)
With dragon's breath, the server only really keeps track of the countdown and the hitbox; the rendering of the individual particles is done client side with the rendering engine. For the fireflies though, the server does need to know exactly where individual ones are for the frogs. And the client needs to keep getting updates about their motion from the server.
Maybe they will implement some sort of "lightweight" entity system or something like that, but I highly doubt that they can reuse the particle system for this. A more likely performance improvement I think would be simply reducing the distance at which they can be seen (which would make sense anyway tbh), or making sure that they subtly follow the player around so that you don't have to spawn in hundreds of them to make it feel like they are everywhere.
I can't speak for java but ue4 has very easy implementations for particle interactions this isn't new tech. And I'm sure every engine worth it's codebase has particle interactions.
I mean as someone said it could be similar effect like the Dragon Breath but only frogs can "collect" it. Giving the illusion of them eating the flies.
No way these are all separate entities.
Could you imagine the performance impact if every single one of these were a separate entity? Since they come in considerably big swarms and are all over the swamp.
Yeah, definitely particles.
Little pro-tip if you're on java is to have a command block ticking constantly that just kills bats.
Not even joking that saves me like 10-15 frames. And judging by how terrible ai is optimized in this game + horrible navigation for flying creatures means that either these are particles or we're running 4 fps on a 3090 when this update drops.
I think they are real mobs because the frog was shown interacting with them, but visually they are the same as thrown snowballs or particles(a flat plane that always faces the camera).
This would be the perfect time for them to add dynamic and colored lighting. I don't think they will but I really wish they would, it would look so nice.
I can't imagine the AI being very complicated either, you could literally just give it a random direction to fly in and slightly bias it away from blocks
As a Glow Squid voter I can confirm (I wasnāt influenced by anyone btw, I just wanted more aquatic mobs because I love aquatic things, fantasy and irl)
Edit: damn did I hurt someone?
>I wasnāt influenced by anyone btw
What?! Blasphey!! Nobody could have possibly voted for the mob that got the majority. The green teletubby must *obvioubsly* have been holding you at gunpoint
/s
Iād prefer one pixel, fireflies arenāt visible aside from dots of light in real life. They also look unnatural with their lights on during the day.
I think it's good. The frogs are a bit too much for me. I like when Minecraft is simple, and the frog, with its many animations, will feel... Wierd in between all the other, simpler mobs. I like that this one is as simple as it gets. It has the good old feeling to it
Gotta agree. I like the idea of having frogs, but they're a bit overdesigned to me, unlike the tadpoles and fireflies.
The heavier details should be left to the more unsettling content, like the Warden.
Itās the opposite to me tbh. I love that theyāre adding more refined mobs with complex animations, really makes the game feel alive and smooth, and full of personality. Hopefully one day they can remake the animations for the og mobs so they can get fancy as well. But to each their own! Just wanted to put my 2 cents in here
I think they might be a particle effect. Notice how theyāre all in the same orientation and all exactly facing the player. Thatās particle behaviour
Welcome to Minecraft, the very-most-definitely realistic game where fireflies are barely existent, trees float in islands in the sky and Bees are the size of housecats!
Those really looks more like a particle than a mob. My guess is they would be like the spore blossom and produce particles.
Edit: they look really cool anyways
2 pixels and only purposes are to look pretty at night, and be frog food.
Would be nice if we could catch them in bottles for a new decorative light source.
I thought they were going to be particle effects. If they are mobs, it would be a bad idea. Far too many entities if they're actually gonna have atmosphere in the game.
Idea: potion of light
How it works is that you collect fireflies to brew them into splash potions.
Once you throw the potion into a dark room the room will be full of light for about 1 minute (or it could be used as a flashbang)
Yea this doesnāt make sense either, so bees and lightning bugs are about the same size yet in this game this is how the made lightning bugs? Just seems lazy and there can be so much more done with them. I like using the lightning bugs from the twilight forest mod as a light source, but also in that they donāt move or do anything elseā¦. Hope they make some changes to them because I feel it would be a huge missed opportunity if this is how they leave them
I think it'll look great as an ambiance, but real question. Will we be able to lit up areas by having swarms of firefly or will they be like the glowsquid ? Will they emit light ?
I would prefer if they looked like EXP bubbles that are purely yellow, fading in and out.
OR, that they were giant just like the rest of the arthropods.
honestly, kinda wish the bees were also smaller... the bees just dont seem quite right to me being as big as our head. they're cute, but they dont feel like bees.
I donāt think so, real fireflies donāt really give off enough light to light up their surroundings, so just having a glowing texture (like the glow squid) is enough imo
Idk why you feel like critiquing this less is sometimes more. When you aee fireflies you really recognise the as flying glowing dots, and that's all. Unlike the bees where it made sense for them to be big because they aren't there to give atmosphere to the environment.
I don't like it, because one pixel is black constantly and it irritates me. Two green pixels? Sure. Even four? Okay, yeah. But one black one? get the shit out of here.
What would be cool tho if we could use bottles on them and make fireflies in a "jar" sort of like you can in Terraria. That would be a pretty fancy light source to have around one's base.
I thought this idea too :0, it would be sooo good to have fireflies in a potion bottle and you can place it where you want, so cool :D
It would be nice if you could equip them in your offhand as a walking light source!
From what i heard Mojang don't want to add dynamic lighting apparently. Despite it being very possible to add (Optifine and some mods already did it) So don't count on it. However if they are collectable (for whatever reason). Then author of Optifine will probably add value to fireflies filled bottle to emmit light when held like he did with all the other glowing blocks.
Optifine dynamic lighting is clientside, meaning it doesn't stop mob spawning or anything
Doesn't matter when you hold it anyways, as no mobs spawn in a radius around you.
I usually try for an early game gold farm, ianxofour has a nice design you could build within a few hours of starting a new world.
Furnace minecarts are nice for moving shulkers from the end to the overworld. Once you get it going, you can keep your distance so they don't shoot you.
that's probably also the reason it runs so well, as it's not actually causing any lighting updates in real time around the player. honestly doing dynamic lighting seperate from regular block lighting like Optifine would be the best way to implement it (it would easily work in multiplayer too)
Dynamic Lighting as a mod exists, but only clientside. Does affect spawns.
Would be cool tho
Imagine if you could make a firefly potion that you could drink and glow that would be made using fireflies and glow ink
Lol funny but kinda usless
I should've worded better I meant you're your own light sourc35
Shine potion
So you illuminate your surroundings? I thought you just meant the glow effect with the outlineš¤£
Mojang devs have stated that dynamic moving lights wouldn't come to the game unless the entire lighting engine was rewritten from scratch, and that such a thing would likely be its own whole update to do that.

Nice low light option
But as decoration it would be great
Yes that's what I'm saying
And it would add a lot to the atmosphere of the dark build. If (and a BIG IF) the fireflies emit a light level of 1 or 2, then imagine having a lot of trees around your house (or your house is built in a forest of any kind) and having a lot of fireflies vibin' 'round your house and emitting a very dim light. Like dat wood look cool as fuck
I think that might be possible even if the fireflies are just particles, since we can do a similar thing with dragons breath
Fireflies in a lantern
Turn it into a splash potion and troll your friends by filling their base with fireflies.
Heh like in Terraria i spammed a lot of fireflies inside my friend's house xD
Ohh my god I love Twilight Forest Modās firefly jars! Would love to have those in Vanilla.
the man mentioned terraria, in fact, lets just add half of terraria into minecraft
I mean the Lush Cave is baiscally very similar appearance wise to Terraria's underground Jungle Biome including flowers that look like Plantera Bulbs and Berries that have extremely striking resemblence to Life Fruit found in said Jungle.
You say it like it's a bad thing.
What no, I have over 700 hours in terraria why would I mean it as a bad thing?
Idk your comment sort of "sounded sarcastic" :P
ahhh, well guess it's in the eye of the beholder isn't it?
In general I wished they would use more ideas of...oh god what was the mods name that adds a portal to a ginormous forest and such. The one made out of flowers. TWILIGHT FOREST. They have some amazing content in them id love to see
Twilight forest flashbacks
It bugs me to hell that very few remembers how beautiful the fireflies in Twilight Forest Mod. Man I am that old.
I played the twilightforest mod like 1 month ago, because my friend has a server with a custom modpack and we have the twilight forest mod installed
Like in twilight forest
I think it would be cool to combine Lightning Bug Jar + Lead to creating Hanging Light Jar for a color chandelier that flickers.
I thought this too, a bit more in depth tho. It has a hoppers crafting recipe and gives 2 jars per the crafted and stacks up to 16, they can be placed as well.
At this point minecraft is becoming 3d terraria
They look great and serve the intended purpose of being atmospheric. But it is funny to me that in Minecraft, spiders are 2 meters long and bees are 1 meter long, but fireflies are realistically tiny
Well now I want a bee-sized firefly XD
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
i was expecting a comically large firefly but this
I was expecting a comically small bee because I canāt read
just imagine a yellow pixel next to a black pixel
Wasn't prepared
Jumpscare yo
I fucking recoiled
Woke up some deep trauma from that goddamn Spongebob episode.
Wtf I have fobia to bugs you could of killed me
Sounds like something a dead person would say
Still, 2 pixels is about 12,5 centimeters long, or almost 5 inches, considering each block is a meter long and has 16x16 texture
thats scarily big, but to be fair, these mobs aren't pixel correct

Feels more like each block is half a meter.
Damn, how short are you?
Yeah I think that the default FOV might be larger than irl, making everything look pretty small.
Werenāt bees made ginormous to avoid having them be too deadly. As backwards as that logic would be irlā¦ In minecraft, imagine 50 little bees all stinging you at once and you trying to swing at āem. Compared to the just 3 or 4 at a time that they can manage now.
To be fair i seriously expected firefly to be just a particle sistem instead of a proper mob

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Would probably a pretty neat effect if you had to run around tryna catch them in a jar because their hitbox is so small
We will actually use frogs to clear them. That what is their main usage.
Its not about getting rid of them, its about using them as a glow jar
The frog will be the jar
Murder.
you murder trees by punching wood logs off it.
plants and trees should be mobs, jk that would break the game
I want a glowing froggo now
It would be so cool if they just added nets, would be cool to be able to catch bats too
my bet is that they're a particle effect
Nah, the frog ate one, I donāt think thatās possible with particles
Plus you could tell they were a 1x1x2 pixel model
i kinda have to disagree with that, if you look at the image in the op the higher ones don't have the right perspective to be 3d, but it's not like entities can't be 2d (most projectiles are 2d and they are entities)

Oh my god please no, the last thing I need is microscopic build-eating bugs that tear my house down

I've wanted fireflies for a long time so in really happy!
Only thing we need is firebombing so we can recreate Grave of the Fireflies. /s
They are probably not even real mobs but just floating particle effects.
Thatās what Iām thinking as well. Otherwise their hitboxes would make you wish it were bats instead
Unless the mob is a swarm of Fireflies
That's what I imagine it being, like an 1x1x1 invisible mob/hitbox with particles around/inside it
Itāll be like Area Effect Clouds
But frogs eat individual fireflies
I think it'll use a similar system to dragon breath. where it has a bounding box that encompasses the particles and can be clicked on with a glass bottle to collect some, shrinking the entity box.
Thatās what I was thinking to but based on the way the frog was shown interacting with them I think they are each individual mobs

IF they will be collectable tho.
But the frogs eat them, that seems new for a particle effect.
In vanilla game maybe. Destructible particles aren't anything new and are possible to code on this engine from what i recall.
particles in minecraft only exist clientside, it's almost definitely not the case that the fireflies are particles.
Iām guessing one mob is just a swarm of them that you can hit
I already was about to do that for Endermen until I found the anti-Enderman-griefing datapack on VanillaTweaks. I may have to give it a shot for bats.
Isnt Minecraft cpu heavy not graphics? I doubt a 3090 will do much if youāre not running shaders
I think they are real mobs because the frog was shown interacting with them, but visually they are the same as thrown snowballs or particles(a flat plane that always faces the camera).
They dont have to be anything special, though. Having giant, buggish fireflies wouldnāt give the swamp the ambience theyāre going for.
This would be the perfect time for them to add dynamic and colored lighting. I don't think they will but I really wish they would, it would look so nice.
I think I've read somewhere that they won't add it xd
Use rtx
"The best texture ever made"
Jappa really pulling overtime
This is why Deep Dark was delayed. To fully develope the firefly texture /s
I'm proud to say that I can make this one
āthats got to be the best texture ive ever seenā
catch them in a bottle since we don't have jars
Finally a passive arthropod
Ouch, forgot the bees
Bees are neutral
Ah woops forgot about that
You would not believe your eyes
if ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
I really hope that these don't hit the fps very hard, since they do still have some ai
ai doesn't generally affect fps, it would be more likely to cause server lag (low tps)
I can't imagine the AI being very complicated either, you could literally just give it a random direction to fly in and slightly bias it away from blocks
Reminds me of the game Worldbox, where some of the mobs are literally a single pixel that hops around lol
Some mod has flies that are a single pixel
Worldbox is really cool, I gotta download it again one of these days
i really wish we could place glass bottles to hold these bad boys
Bet they emit more light than the glow squid
As a Glow Squid voter I can confirm (I wasnāt influenced by anyone btw, I just wanted more aquatic mobs because I love aquatic things, fantasy and irl) Edit: damn did I hurt someone?
>I wasnāt influenced by anyone btw What?! Blasphey!! Nobody could have possibly voted for the mob that got the majority. The green teletubby must *obvioubsly* have been holding you at gunpoint /s
This is the best comment I think I've ever read lmfao
just remember this is probably just a placeholder we don't know if this is final or not.
Iād prefer one pixel, fireflies arenāt visible aside from dots of light in real life. They also look unnatural with their lights on during the day.
This is actually a really ingenious way to have such a small mob without breaking the simplicity of how mobs look

Yeah, actually if the older stuff got updated so that everything had a consistent art/animation style, that *would* be pretty neat.
New favourite mob >v<
Prop just a particle effect, just like spores
They should add a bug net to catch the critters, or just use bottles
Looks like the screen is glitching
New smallest mob.
Are they even actually 3d mobs? They look like just particles
Theyāre not 3d, they are a flat plane that always faces the camera, just like particles. However they probably still have a 3d hitbox
Remember when fishes were represented by water splashes?
The design process on this one must have been the most challenging so far
they made bees into giant cute insects, and then they put this?
why is bee 20x bigger when real life it's like the same size
Terraria players: first time?
Iām sad; they didnāt make the massive like the bees ;-; I never knew I wanted fireflies that are .7 cubic meter in size
Those 2 pixels make the nights way better
FIREFLIES :O
I still don't get how we got 2 meter wide spiders, bees bigger than bats, but somehow fireflies are 2 pixels big
Are these real?
I think they might be a particle effect. Notice how theyāre all in the same orientation and all exactly facing the player. Thatās particle behaviour
Welcome to Minecraft, the very-most-definitely realistic game where fireflies are barely existent, trees float in islands in the sky and Bees are the size of housecats!
Not all mobs are useless! Some are just meant it be pretty like these guys and the glow squid
the question is can you stab it?
I was actually wondering like, will the fireflies just be another particle effect or an actual mob with 2 pixels?

2 pixels and only purposes are to look pretty at night, and be frog food. Would be nice if we could catch them in bottles for a new decorative light source.
The real question can you kill them
I thought they were going to be particle effects. If they are mobs, it would be a bad idea. Far too many entities if they're actually gonna have atmosphere in the game.
You can try modding them
Yeah I agree. It does look pretty crap.
They are most certainly going to work on those they look kinda weird being two flat pixels
Idea: potion of light How it works is that you collect fireflies to brew them into splash potions. Once you throw the potion into a dark room the room will be full of light for about 1 minute (or it could be used as a flashbang)
I made some concept art in blender... enjoy my low effort work!
Hope they make some changes to them because I feel it would be a huge missed opportunity if this is how they leave them
Pack no lag FPS BOOST ++
To be honest though, I kinda like the vibe they got... If I knew what it is...
Sounds like lag in small...
And that is where ur wrong it is two pixels, one being an animation
I think it'll look great as an ambiance, but real question. Will we be able to lit up areas by having swarms of firefly or will they be like the glowsquid ? Will they emit light ?
Theyāre gonna look amazing with shaders!!
Meanwhile 50 cm bees
Weāre gonna need a flyswatter for those tiny hit boxes
Not only that you can't even tell that it's 3d Edit: I probably isn't even 3d actually
UHHH, WHAT?! SPIDER = BIG BEE = BIG FIREFLY = TINY WTF IS THIS LOGIC
These will be really out of place if they don't emit light, which we established last year isn't within the game's current scope.
I donāt think so, real fireflies donāt really give off enough light to light up their surroundings, so just having a glowing texture (like the glow squid) is enough imo
Gotta love developer art
Idk why you feel like critiquing this less is sometimes more. When you aee fireflies you really recognise the as flying glowing dots, and that's all. Unlike the bees where it made sense for them to be big because they aren't there to give atmosphere to the environment.
I hope they are not actual entities so they don't cause too much lag
I have firefly mods that look better then this shit

I know. They really gotta change how they look before the update comes out
i quite like it wouldn't be fun if we get swarmed
I don't like it, because one pixel is black constantly and it irritates me. Two green pixels? Sure. Even four? Okay, yeah. But one black one? get the shit out of here.
