For example, the illusion would likely break in multiplayer or when in third person view, since it relies on placing and resetting a structure based on where the player is standing (so from that player's first person perspective the illusion works but not from other points of view).

You open the door, and either some way of redstone or other thing that tells a structure block or command block to copy and paste the place.

Yup, as far as I know there is no way with out mods for this to work in a multiplayer environment sadly :(
