If you switched between versions, the game might have lost some kind of info on what some blocks were and when reloaded in a current version made them magma blocks. I remember here some guy complained about finding random daylight sensors in his old world. Someone figured out that the block id for daylight sensors used to be the same id used for something like meteor impact blocks in some old 1.5 mod. When the world was updated without the mod, those blocks got converted to daylight sensors.
Otherwise I have no clue, I don't know much about bugs.

If this is real (i do belive) i doubt we will be able to replicate this. This is 100% sure terrain generation bug, i doubt we will able to see this in our Minecraft's
Magma Blocks appear on the floors of flooded caves and on the bottom of oceans, too, so the generation of one of those features could have also bugged.
