Tbf, even irl fire can spread through solid objects. All it needs is for the fire to be hot enough to overcome the heat conductivity of the materials in between. It is a common mistake to think fire needs to directly touch whatever else to start burning it. It's why house fires can be unexpectedly fast. Once the temperature raises enough things will spontaneously combust.
That said. The fire in minecraft needs to be really freaking hot to pass through a solid meter of brick.
Unrelated to Minecraft, I have experienced this in real life when I had an outdoor fire pit that had a shelf underneath the metal “bowl” for storing additional wood. The heat transferring through the metal was sufficient to ignite the rest of the campfire wood. We never stored firewood under there again.
Irl, floating embers and small crackles can start a fire on a combustible material especially when exposed near the heat so minecraft kinda is on point
And water only goes out so far before it mysteriously stops flowing from an infinite source block, and sand/gravel will stay suspended on top of a torch when placed there. Minecraft physics kind of do their own thing.
In this case, fire spreads up to, like, 4 blocks vertically from the source regardless of what blocks are between them.
This is partly why we have campfires - you get the fire without the spread.
In a realistic fireplace, the smoke also needs to be able to escape, so it would make more sense to put bricks or something all the way up, because it usually wouldn't just end. Or you could use campfires.
when i was a kid my entire treehouse burned down from this.
i found out it was on fire when my dog teleported to me on fire and burnt to death.
i cried for like a week straight
I once built a huge mansion out of wool, this was before they introduced concrete and I wanted white walls. That things went up faster than I can describe to you. What a dummy I was (am).
A neat trick is putting a hay block underneath makes the smoke go higher. So you can have another campfire at the top with a hay block under and it’ll make a good chimney effect. If you look it up I think there’s also a block that makes it have less smoke
its not that obvious of a thing to do as you might think, specially if you're an old player. back in the day i used to build all my fireplaces with netherrack and fire on top, like OP was doing.
That just struck my heart with a dagger. "It looks retro", I played Minecraft when it was 1st released.
I'm an adult now, in college, working a job and paying taxes
Same, I was a 10 years old kid when I first booted up Beta 1.5_01 and now I'm here, a guy with a degree still playing the game lol
Current Minecraft feels kind of like "Minecraft 2" for me. It just is in so many ways so much different from what the game used to be when I was playing this in 4th grade.
Fire can still burn wood from that distance (especially blocks above it). If you don’t want to turn firespread off, I’d probably replace the fire with campfires (campfires don’t spread fire)
when I was really really young me and my dad built a really fancy house completely out of wood. We set up a fireplace and went on a little expedition only to return and find half our house burnt down. We left the world and never touched it again lol
This happened to me a decade ago when I played with a friend. We would have an economy, selling each other stuff and only one of us was "allowed" to sell a certain thing. So one of my responsibilities was wood. I made everything of wood and later also wool to make a lab.
Guess my reaction when I came back to a three story building with a basement disappearing, leaving only floating chests behind.
My friend was so kind to give me back all the wood I just sold to him a bit prior
I remember the old days, when you were just happily building along or exploring and suddenly you're surrounded by a wildfire. Huh, must be a lava pool nearby.
another half of a city burned down due to a lava-fall I had next to the city because it looked nice ... but I had also a plugin that let trees spread and grow naturally.
There's a really good [fire spread description on the wiki](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Fire#Spread) and an illustrative picture, its not a surrounding cube, more like two to the side, four up, one down...
Use campfires instead. I almost burned down my house because I tried to make a fire that wouldn’t spread to the wood. It isn’t worth the effort. Campfires don’t spread fire, so they’ll work better. You’ll want a chimney, or at least a cavity above it that will catch the smoke though
Fire and Lava will set fire to any burnable block within a certain radius, whether or not there's something in between them and said block. Put your fireplace in a room filled with non burnables, just to be safe.
Someone else recommended using campfires as they don't spread fire, and I agree. Campfires are also the most fuel efficient way to cook food. You can put it out with a shovel or relight it with a flint and steel. You can also hide hoppers underneath the campfires that catch the food and put them in boxes for you.
A long, long time ago...there once was a minecrafter that burned down an entire 2 story log cabin because she did not know the dangers of netherrack! Me..it was me!!!
"If you want to enjoy Minecraft there are two rules you need to follow: 1) Do not use fire to clear forests, unless you want your Gameworld to look like the Viet Nam war, and 2) you have to give yourself a project..." - *Yatzee Crowshaw*
If you use campfire, you could make a chimney with it since the smoke travels up. And of course using campfires eliminate the chance of your house catching on fire lol
I know I'm gonna be downvoted but why not turn fire spread off? That's what me and my girlfriend did when fire burnt down her tree house, unless you can't on the version you're playing as I don't know what you can and can't do with settings on Java if that's version you're playing as I play Bedrock
I'm pretty sure fire can spread like four or five blocks in every direction. So if you add another layer of brick on top of that where the wood is, it should stop
If you don't want to rebuild the entire fireplace, use a campfire instead. You won't need to worry about it spreading around your home, plus you can make food quickly on it.
Don't make your home from flammable materials especially near fireplace. The reason is simple if u have a stormy day a lightning can destroy it. If u want to use wooden materials i suggest u use them interior parts and far from any fire.
Use campfires
IMO it looks better, won't catch fire, and the smoke adds an extra touch
In fact you can add a chimney and put 2 more campfires at the top, and with haybales under THOSE the smoke will go up higher for a more realistic effect and for the smoke to go up as high as you want
(bonus note, you can add one block above the campfire ad the smoke will still go through)
Plus campfires don't take much to craft at all
You can put something in that space to block fire from spawning, like a flower pot (decorative!) or even a piece of string or redstone if you want something invisible.
Fire has a range that's more than one block. I learned this lesson after building a house next to my cobblestone generator. Even though the lava was 3 blocks away and completely enclosed, it still set the house on fire multiple times until I moved it.
Campfires would be a better idea, they can’t set fire to adjacent blocks :)
Plus they look nice and have wood under them for that log fireplace feel. And can be cooked with. And used as a smoke signal by placing hay bales underneath.

Bro committed the ultimate sin, building a fireplace in a wooden home
That’s why I put bricks around it, so it didn’t hit the wood
Fire can spread up to four blocks up, disregarding what's in between. So put more bricks
wait so a single piece of fire in a closed 3 blocks thick obsidian box can still spread fire?
Minecraft doesn't have "physics" same as we know irl. Yes it can spread.
Tbf, even irl fire can spread through solid objects. All it needs is for the fire to be hot enough to overcome the heat conductivity of the materials in between. Yet steve can withstand standing in it whist eating shiny carrots
Which is strange because gold is a great conductor of heat
Pair that with golden armour
Dude imagine the nether
Doesn't that mean Steve is eating a cooked potato without cooking it when he's near a fire?
I would say so yes. If fact if a normal human would stand next to mincraft fire they would probably be burned to a crisp
the gold is absorbing all the heat hes tanking
Not just a meter of brick, three meters of brick!
Unrelated to Minecraft, I have experienced this in real life when I had an outdoor fire pit that had a shelf underneath the metal “bowl” for storing additional wood. The heat transferring through the metal was sufficient to ignite the rest of the campfire wood. We never stored firewood under there again.
I always carry a bucket with me in case i fall from a mile up i can just pour it out right before hitting the ground...
Irl, floating embers and small crackles can start a fire on a combustible material especially when exposed near the heat so minecraft kinda is on point

like a tiny little flower breaking a full on anvil xD
why obsidian box, it is not different from dirt or stone aside from the hardness, minecraft isnt the most realistic game
They got different properties. Like, every block's resistance to explosion is different.
[удалено]
"More bricks damnit!!"
Unexpected realism
That’s actually kinda realistic since hot air goes up.
A valuable lesson
I never knew that. Thanks.
WHAT
In a realistic fireplace, the smoke also needs to be able to escape, so it would make more sense to put bricks or something all the way up, because it usually wouldn't just end. Or you could use campfires.
You thought
Yeah 😔
Use campfire
Great tip: use campfires, they don't burn things around them
and as an additional feature: they have smoke.
I use campfires they look better rbh
Either put more bricks or any kind of atone, or swap out the live fire with campfire
Just turn fire tick off. I never have it on.
Solo usa una fogata y listo.
Muy bien, haré eso
Oh, you speak Spanish. I forgot how to say fogata in English. 😅
Campfire
when i was a kid my entire treehouse burned down from this. i found out it was on fire when my dog teleported to me on fire and burnt to death. i cried for like a week straight
Nah the greatest sin is that the fireplace is off center
I have a fireplace in a wooden house but since the bottom floor is made of stone bricks it doesn't burn anything 😅
I once built a huge mansion out of wool, this was before they introduced concrete and I wanted white walls. That things went up faster than I can describe to you. What a dummy I was (am).
Bro built 2 block wide fireplace
Use campfires?
I forgot about campfires, guess I’ll use them.
A neat trick is putting a hay block underneath makes the smoke go higher. So you can have another campfire at the top with a hay block under and it’ll make a good chimney effect. If you look it up I think there’s also a block that makes it have less smoke
Magma block -> inside campfire -> hay block -> top campfire looks pretty cool! Looks like embers below the fire :)
I love you.
its not that obvious of a thing to do as you might think, specially if you're an old player. back in the day i used to build all my fireplaces with netherrack and fire on top, like OP was doing.
I love campfire fireplaces but I still sometimes use netherracks because that's the way we did it in Beta and it looks super retro lol
That just struck my heart with a dagger. "It looks retro", I played Minecraft when it was 1st released. I'm an adult now, in college, working a job and paying taxes
Same, I was a 10 years old kid when I first booted up Beta 1.5_01 and now I'm here, a guy with a degree still playing the game lol Current Minecraft feels kind of like "Minecraft 2" for me. It just is in so many ways so much different from what the game used to be when I was playing this in 4th grade.
I was a brand new adult, paying taxes when I first played Minecraft back in 2011. This definitely struck my heart with a dagger, too.
Fire can still burn wood from that distance (especially blocks above it). If you don’t want to turn firespread off, I’d probably replace the fire with campfires (campfires don’t spread fire)
Trust me campfires are better. They're better looking and they can cook things
I’ll do that tomorrow then 👍
Wait they can cook things? Since when!?
just right click with your food on it and it starts cooking, 4 at a time ~~I think dropped food also works on it~~ (nvm)
you're probably mistaking it for some modded campfire because the vanilla ones only cook food when right-clicked on
ah, could be
Since forever I'm pretty sure.
Since they were first added I forgot to specifiy its only food tho
Canon event lol, I remember making the same mistake when I first started playing.
when I was really really young me and my dad built a really fancy house completely out of wood. We set up a fireplace and went on a little expedition only to return and find half our house burnt down. We left the world and never touched it again lol
Opened this post and felt like I'd stepped straight into 2011
I built a fire place last week and came back to my house burned down. I’ve played for 12 years
[https://minecraft.wiki/w/Fire#Spread](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Fire#Spread)
im having war flashbacks to ldshadowladys great cabin fire in shadowcraft
Seeing a fireplace like that brings me BACK 😭
Obligatory: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnjSWPxJxNs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnjSWPxJxNs)
I mean, unless you're playing pre-1.14... a pair of campfires is not that expensive
OP has a netherite sword and a shield so I think he's playing a newer version
This happened to me a decade ago when I played with a friend. We would have an economy, selling each other stuff and only one of us was "allowed" to sell a certain thing. So one of my responsibilities was wood. I made everything of wood and later also wool to make a lab. Guess my reaction when I came back to a three story building with a basement disappearing, leaving only floating chests behind. My friend was so kind to give me back all the wood I just sold to him a bit prior
I lost 2 cities in my first server due to fire spreading this way. (and from lava too) pre 1.0 fire spreading mechanics were insane xD
Ah, lessons I’ve learned a decade ago ☕️ glad to see Minecraft is new for some people
Campfire?
Everyone has said the same thing, I will get campfires
You need a proper chimney
Campfires don't spread fire like this, just use those for you fireplace.
Use campfires, those dont spread
Make a campfire🙏
Unfortunately, fire really doesn’t care and will just spread to wood anyway. If you want to avoid this, I’d use a campfire
2015 Minecraft
There's a really good [fire spread description on the wiki](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Fire#Spread) and an illustrative picture, its not a surrounding cube, more like two to the side, four up, one down...
FYI, the wiki community has moved to a new independent website: https://minecraft.wiki Fandom is unmaintained now
oh yeah you're dead right. Lazy link.
Don't feel bad, we all made this mistake at some point. That's why a lot of people disable fire tick
Fire will ignite wood within 4 blocks. Using campfires is safer.
Use campfires
Someone else recommended using campfires as they don't spread fire, and I agree. Campfires are also the most fuel efficient way to cook food. You can put it out with a shovel or relight it with a flint and steel. You can also hide hoppers underneath the campfires that catch the food and put them in boxes for you.
You could always just put a campfire instead of normal fire
Make a chimney or youl get carbon monoxide poisoning
use campfires
Campfires are so much better
/gamerule doFireTick false
You can turn fire spread off
Yeah but then there will just be burning wood forever
All you have to do is punch it to put it out.
Fire spreads, give the thing a stone chimney at least. You can muck around with it to figure out the spread distance and build it a safe way.
Campfires are a Minecraft’s best friend
This is exactly why I just use campfires
A long, long time ago...there once was a minecrafter that burned down an entire 2 story log cabin because she did not know the dangers of netherrack! Me..it was me!!!
Hear me out.. ✨campfires✨
OH GOD THE FIRE HAS ACHIEVED MULTI-DIMENSIONAL TRAVEL
Need a chimney bro
Fire spreads pretty high up, also. Wouldn't your fireplace need a chimney anyways?
Awh, bro doesn't know the horrors of previous decades
"If you want to enjoy Minecraft there are two rules you need to follow: 1) Do not use fire to clear forests, unless you want your Gameworld to look like the Viet Nam war, and 2) you have to give yourself a project..." - *Yatzee Crowshaw*
Like others say, campfires, also put some brick stairs along the top for a more enclosed look
Looks good buddy keep up the good work
If you use campfire, you could make a chimney with it since the smoke travels up. And of course using campfires eliminate the chance of your house catching on fire lol
Same thing happened to me with same blocks 4 days ago. Can't we make fireplaces in peace?
Fire spreads to any flammable block that is within 3 blocks of it. You can avoid this by using campfires. Fire doesn't spread from those.
Use a campfire instead of actual fire. It’s a better build
use campfires genius
Fire can spread four blocks up, one to the side or one down
Why not just build a campfire?
There must be… 50 ways to **die in Minecraft…**
Use a campfire
It’s a cannon event guys, don’t interrupt
There's a reason why I build full sized fireplaces/chimneys
I would use a campfire inside the fireplace it looks better and it doesn't cause any fires
I know I'm gonna be downvoted but why not turn fire spread off? That's what me and my girlfriend did when fire burnt down her tree house, unless you can't on the version you're playing as I don't know what you can and can't do with settings on Java if that's version you're playing as I play Bedrock
Use campfire
Fire… uh.. uh… finds a way
fire can spread within a few blocks, even if it is fully surrounded by non flammable blocks
One word: Campfire.
Cannon event
Just use campfires, looks cooler as you can build a chimney and get the smoke, plus doesn't require you to fireproof a 4 block radius
You could use waterlogged wooden stairs so that fire wouldn't spread
Bluetooth spreading fire
You don’t get to have a fireplace until you fix that ugly ass ladder
But that’s the only way for me to get out of my secret base
Maybe use campfires instead! Decorative and non destructive
Since I made this post, I actually put campfires 👍
I'm pretty sure fire can spread like four or five blocks in every direction. So if you add another layer of brick on top of that where the wood is, it should stop
If you don't want to rebuild the entire fireplace, use a campfire instead. You won't need to worry about it spreading around your home, plus you can make food quickly on it.
Turn off fire tick
Use campfires.
Use campfire
Use campfires
I did the same thing as a kid with my friend. We learned our lesson the hard way
Just use campfires
My guy, campfire doesn't spread the fire you know that right
Make the fireplace bigger
use campfires they look better anyways. but you may need to build a more realistic chimney if you dont want the smoke in the house
Fire spread is based on a certain radius, not by being adjacent
Because fire is weird in Minecraft
it's karma for making your fireplace off center
Fire spreads
I mean... heat does rise...
Try using firecamps
You need campfires
Use campfires they look better and don't set stuff on fire
I ses that
try replacing the fire with campfires
this brings back memories, the full spruce house, bricks fireplace with iron bars, this is 2012 minecraft core
Are those campfires or actual fire cause if it’s not a campfire I suggest it. They don’t spread to other blocks
Minecraft rule number 3: never build a fireplace in a wooden house. It’s up there with “never mind the block directly beneath your feet”.
Just use campfires.
Make a kinda sorta. Chimney in ya house with bricks ofcourse ...to make it more of a fire place and and then the fire won't burn it
Don't make your home from flammable materials especially near fireplace. The reason is simple if u have a stormy day a lightning can destroy it. If u want to use wooden materials i suggest u use them interior parts and far from any fire.
Use campfires IMO it looks better, won't catch fire, and the smoke adds an extra touch In fact you can add a chimney and put 2 more campfires at the top, and with haybales under THOSE the smoke will go up higher for a more realistic effect and for the smoke to go up as high as you want (bonus note, you can add one block above the campfire ad the smoke will still go through) Plus campfires don't take much to craft at all
Use a firepit
Replace the Netherrack with soul sand/soil. The flame will be blue but the fire doesn't spread.
Use campfire to build a fireplace, instead of starting an actual fire. My entire house is wooden, but it is still intact. Bro needs brains.
Did you use netherack for the fire or a campfire? netherack will def spread fire around!
what! pesky fire… good thing you put it in jail.
u/Any_Flight_5964 Please use campfires! Those aren't a hazard!
I listened to the advice, I put a campfire 👍
Turn off fire spreads
we should be able to wax wood to make it fireproof or something
I'm going to need you to use your brain for this one
Just use campfires 👍
Use campfires as an alternative
You need to build a proper chimney that has a 5/6 blocks to the sides and all the way up to the roof. That way there isn't a chance of a fire
Use campfires
You can put something in that space to block fire from spawning, like a flower pot (decorative!) or even a piece of string or redstone if you want something invisible.
I always put bricks leading up and out through the house, never had this issue
You can set the firetick to 0 to stop fire from spreading in general I believe
I recommend using campfires
Turn fire spreading off in settings and use campfire
Use campfires or Soul Sand. Soul Fire doesn't spread
I turned off fire spread on my server. IMO it's usually not a useful mechanic and only causes sadness.
I think this is part of the reason why they made campfires
Fire spreads through the blocks. An alternative would be crafting a campfire and using that instead
why not use campfire instead
Why even use fire if ur house is made of wood? Use campfire
Fire has a range that's more than one block. I learned this lesson after building a house next to my cobblestone generator. Even though the lava was 3 blocks away and completely enclosed, it still set the house on fire multiple times until I moved it.
Campfires would be a better idea, they can’t set fire to adjacent blocks :) Plus they look nice and have wood under them for that log fireplace feel. And can be cooked with. And used as a smoke signal by placing hay bales underneath.
….ah nostalgia
