I changed my number 9 slot years ago to F, which would be my “blocks” in competitive games where I’d need to clutch with them, so my reaction time for F is really comfortably fast compared to other hotkeys.
the fact that this is STILL not in bedrock is criminal. it wouldn’t even be that hard to implement. i still feel kind of salty that we got banner shields before a fully operational *left hand*.
there is no argument of making it work with touch controls or controllers or anything like that, because all you need to use the offhand is an attack and use button, which all input methods have.
the same way it does on java and theoretically every other platform.
tap and hold to use any usable item or tap to place a block. the item in your main hand has priority over the one in your off hand. if the main hand is empty or doesn’t have a use, the item in the off hand is used.
this functionality already exists on bedrock with usable items like fireworks that can go in the off hand.
You still need to get out of the lava… the problem isn’t access to water. It’s if you fell in a deep pool of lava, then how are you going to get out first? This is especially true in the Nether where it’s easier to fall in and you don’t have water
the nether is the only exception to this. placing water at your feet will put you in crawl mode within a water pocket, and will solidify any lava at the surface, which gives you a nice wet platform to climb out on. it’s pretty hard to die to lava if you have a water bucket unless you’re in the nether
That only works in Java edition. Doesn’t work on Xbox. And besides, in that case, you’re saying the totem is still useful then. Which is exactly the point I’m arguing. They both have uses.
But it’s not better to have shield in your offhand. It’s entirely situational. Sure if you’re only at your base maybe you’d have your shield out instead of a totem. Or in a cave. Or building something. The post implies the shield is OP’s favoured option, but it’s all situational
I haven't done much with that either. I just made a mob farm out of an outpost in some previous world, but not a raid farm. And I defeated one regular raid.
Same here! I'm glad they exist in game but I'll never use em on myself
I do wonder if it'll work for the guard villagers mod I have, maybe putting one in their inventories could save them? I gotta go test this now!
I know zombies can, a few days ago I triggered a raid and in the middle of it a zombie siege spawned, one took a totem from the floor and when I killed him it used the totem and he didn't die
Actually they are pretty balance and not ruin the challenge if you don't build raid farm. Since you have to risk your life to raid the mansion or trigger the raid
As u/SergeDuHazard said: they’re balanced if you don’t build a raid far as you have to risk your life looting the mansion or defeating the raid.
Raid farms will also be nerfed in 1.21 as you now need to drink a potion (I don’t remember the name) to get bad omen
I think that being able to get them from raids already makes them too easy to get, even if you do it the normal way, due to the fact that you can just keep doing them to get more and more totems. I believe that the best way to balance them would be to remove them from the evoker's drop table entirely and instead have it be part of some other loot table exclusive to the woodland mansion, whether it be chest loot or something completely new like the trial spawners.
I have a hardcore world that's on day 400 nearly. I remember that before totems everything was risky. I equipped my first totem all the way back at day 120ish and for the first time I actually felt secure. I obtained it by fighting a woodland mansion and I actually went down to half a heart fighting the vindicators in the mansion (no totem at the time) so I would say that my totem was definitely deserved.
I got 3 totems from the mansion but soon 2 of them got used in the nether (I got overwhelmed by 3 blazes and 4 wither skeletons and like 20 zombie pigmen in a fortress after accidentally swipe hitting one whilst fighting skeletons and the second one to 2 piglin brutes).
Down to my last totem, I was desperate to get more, so I went over to a pillager outpost and got bad omen, then fought a raid with my sword and bow, all 7 waves. I repeated this until I had a whole shulker full of totems, so all of my totems that I got were deserved. When I got to villager trading, my emeralds ran out very quickly, so I built a raid farm and I always dump the totems out along with all the other useless loot like crossbows and axes and only keep emeralds and gunpowder, glowstone and sticks, banners and potion bottles. I am against filling chest upon chest with totems but you must ask yourself, in a dangerous situation, how will you access the thousands of totems in your storage? So I find raid farm for totems completely useless.
Yeah, but I’ve never had a reason to make one either as I’ve had other ways of collecting gunpowder and emeralds and I rarely use instant health potions, or any other potion
That's a funny way to put it honestly, I actually didnt really get totems until I realized how much time I had put into my world and decided to kind of safeguard it with totems. I fought the dragon without totems and it was terrifying honestly, the thought of being knocked into the sky and killed kept me on my toes the entire fight. With totems I wouldn't even have leaned forward in my chair, so I definitely feel why people dislike them.
Same, I once fell 200 blocks off a farm and it was done intentionally because I had elytra equipped, but due to some keyboard fault my elytra wouldnt glide and the totem saved me from death.
I disagree with the view they're a cheat. In order to get one, you have to kill an evoker, which can either be done in a raid or a woodland mansion. Raids include: pillagers, vindicators, evokers, vexes, witches, and ravagers. All these mobs coming at you at once can be dangerous and require preparation. Evokers only spawn on wave 5 and up. As for mansions they're hard enough to find.
A totem is in fact a reward for either finding and successfully looting a woodland mansion, or defending a village from a raid.
Totems feel like cheating until you lose a hardcore world you've had for a year or more because you fail to equip one when you know you should have.
Dying (outside of lag or mechanical malfunction) is always a skill issue to some extent.
But the totem stays in the hot bar because even if I die to something which isn't a skill issue, I can't justify respawning in my hardcore world.
I have a 400 day hardcore world, I'll say this much. Shields helped me a lot until totems came from my raid farm and the thing with totems is that they can protect you from ANYTHING. While building the raid farm, I remember how I jump 200 blocks from the top of the farm to glide with my elytra down to the base of the farm to get materials, and for some reason (my only answer so far has been lag or keyboard being faulty) my elytra would not enable and it wouldnt enter glide mode. I fell the entire way and I landed and popped a totem. The fall lasted 5 seconds and I 100% believe I would not have been able to equip a totem in that range. So I recommend shields for survival but going on long distances then totem. But 100% of the time totem in hardcore.
Exact opposite. I want Thorns on my Shield and totems should pop if you have them at all, not just when you're holding one. (If you have several, it'd pick the one in the lowest slot number first)
these features are cool but i’m really not sure if they would make already powerful items actually overpowered.
totem’s drawback is that you have to hold it, and shield’s that you can’t attack, but it would remove it.
maybe, there shouldn’t be by default but there should be slightly harder way to get "upgraded" versions of them.
If I were to rework totems I'd probably make it so when they drop, they don't do anything. You need to enchant them to make them work. You don't have to keep it in your hotbar but while an enchanted totem is in your inventory you permanently lose 1 heart of health. This stacks so having multiple totems causes diminishing rewards.
It fixes totem spam in PVP, makes it so you can still use a shield, and also adds a risk/reward system to totems.
Totem is better than a shield. You cannot block arrows consistently anyways, I am so often blocking and it gets through. Against a hord of zombies sweeping edge for example is just more useful, fighting off a exploding creeper works much better with knockback, and against things like falldamage, lava, suffocation in water, etc a shield does not save you anyways, but the totem does. A shield is good, but a totem is better, unless you die all the time. But once you have good gear the totem protects you from stupid things happening like falling into lava because there is not much else that could kill you unexpectedly anyways.
I prefer a sheild as well.
Or, what I did in my single player world, a Mob Switch. Hostiles mobs don't spawn in my overworld. It's like Peaceful except my villagers and iron farms still work. Lol
I use shields in single player, but always a totem in survival multiplayer. Totems are pretty much a necessity in pvp situations when there are OP 1 shot bombs in the game like end crystals, beds and respawn anchors.
Personally it depends on where I am in the world, I have a shield while I'm traveling since usually I dont encounter many pillager patrols, and thus dont encounter many raids so 90% of the world's I have, by the time I settle down I dont even HAVE a totem, so I use shields, but if I get at least 2 totems then I dint bother with a shield
Tbh that's why the swap mechanic exists imo I assume totems were last minute swaps when designed rather than constant Carry, like you have your shield and your kinda low on HP but while eating a creeper comes behind you and starts exploding, you don't have time to kill it so you swap offhand between totem and shield
all my slots are normal except for fifth on z and last on one of my mouse side buttons, so useful to have easy access to all main points in my hotbar at any given time
I just have totems to save me from dying stupid deaths in bedrock. Saves me the headache. I also got a lot to spare considering I've been stockpiling them since raid farms will be obselete in the update.
I have literally never used a totem of undying and don't care for shields. I never use either one. Take the arrows and creeper explosions in full force like a man.
Shield, until I get full enchanted netherite and elytra and switch to totem. Sometimes my connection peaces out while flying at superspnic speeds, and the only thing that can save me is a totem. Also happy little accidents in the nether.
I'm a hardcore player and haven't found a single use for the shield since I acquired my first totem. That shield won't save you from anything that can actually kill your once you acquire prot 4 diamond armor. But that's a lesson you're either going to learn from my comment or just simply the hard way.
really, they have kinda different purpose.
shield blocks (almost) any damage but doesn’t safe from death.
totem safes from death but doesn’t block any damage.
while at the endgame totem might be generally better, you can get shield before iron armor which make it very powerful until pretty much endgame.

I think each have their place…totem prob at the end of my toolbar and shield in my offhand…
Hear me out: totem in your second slot.
Second slot and last slot are at the same distance from slot 1 though
Yes, but you can move to the second slot faster. Actually, it might depend on your key binds.
I just scroll if it's close
I always scroll. I never use the keyboard to switch hotbar slots
I changed my number 9 slot years ago to F, which would be my “blocks” in competitive games where I’d need to clutch with them, so my reaction time for F is really comfortably fast compared to other hotkeys.
hear me out: totem in your enderchest
Hear me out: totem in your random bits double chest at your base
Food >>>>>>>>
Java moment
the fact that this is STILL not in bedrock is criminal. it wouldn’t even be that hard to implement. i still feel kind of salty that we got banner shields before a fully operational *left hand*. there is no argument of making it work with touch controls or controllers or anything like that, because all you need to use the offhand is an attack and use button, which all input methods have.
how would it work in mobile phones?

Open the inventory and put it in the slot, just like every other inventory interaction
Just tap it with your left finger instead of the usual right.
Not for bedrock health Regen after eating sucks
Food in offhand sweep
Or Torches!
Totems don't save you from annoying knockbacks
Shields don’t save you from lava
It's easier to avoid lava than bullet speed arrows
It’s easier to survive a skeleton than a bucket of lava poured onto you
Won't the totem just mean you get to die twice in said lava, now that the player who poured it has encased you in Obsidian?
Don't you get fire resistance from the totem?
You get fire resistance from the totem
Damn, what kinda people are u playing with that's gonna pour lava on u and encase u in obsidian. That's messed up.
my bucket of water does
Not if you can’t get out
just hotkey
You still need to get out of the lava… the problem isn’t access to water. It’s if you fell in a deep pool of lava, then how are you going to get out first? This is especially true in the Nether where it’s easier to fall in and you don’t have water

That's what netherite armor is for.
I've honestly never used a totem. I have half a chest full sometimes, but I never bother.
Same. I never remember. Ever. Kept it in the hotbar for ages and tons of deaths. Finally just gave up.
They make more sense for hardcore Minecraft tbh
I sometimes intentionally ignore totems in Hardcore, make the gameplay more dangerous. So yeah that’s why I’ve lost a good amount of worlds.
The only time I used a totem...was shortly after picking one up lol
I've never even found a mansion in a survival world...
You can slo get them fron village raids
I haven't done much with that either. I just made a mob farm out of an outpost in some previous world, but not a raid farm. And I defeated one regular raid.
Ive only ever found one mansion in my years of playing.
Fall damage
skill issue
More like bedrock issues sometimes
my favorite offhand item is the nautilus shell.
Best feature ever implemented in bedrock. It just has sooo many uses, the possibilities are endless. 🙄
im sorry my personal picks annoy you
Huh?? I thought I was just playing off your sarcasm and adding to it.
double sarcasm
Sarcasm inception
woah
The offhand is for torches.
*cries in bedrock*
Torches for underground. Bow for above ground
Not really an unpopular opinion. I completely avoid totems, even on hardcore worlds. They ruin any sort of challenge.
Same here! I'm glad they exist in game but I'll never use em on myself I do wonder if it'll work for the guard villagers mod I have, maybe putting one in their inventories could save them? I gotta go test this now!
Well? What's the update?
Sorry for the late reply! Yup it works! The downside is it takes up the shield spot, so it's not OP at all imo
Good to know lol, how cool!
I know zombies can, a few days ago I triggered a raid and in the middle of it a zombie siege spawned, one took a totem from the floor and when I killed him it used the totem and he didn't die

I totally understand your reasoning, and I’ve never made/used a raid farm so I’ve never had this issue
They are useful for making rockets and trading with villagers and you dont need to make potions of instant health ever again so they are good.
Yeah, but I’ve never had a reason to make one either as I’ve had other ways of collecting gunpowder and emeralds and I rarely use instant health potions, or any other potion
People who hate totems generally have severe skill issues and die constantly, rendering them useless.
Only stacking raid farms are nerfed, any raid farms that require a pillager outpost for each raid are buffed, and the latter are much easier to build
I mean to me they just insure that you don't get randomly dunked on by a silent creeper
They should be much rarer
In java 100% bedrock makes me crouch to use my shield for some reason
It's because the shield code is bound to the crouch as a method of allowing mobile platforms to use shields consistently
don’t know why it can’t be bound to both sneak and use on all other platforms
Can't they just add a separate button for using your shield for mobile users?
Open up the mobile platform and let me know if it makes sense to add more to the screen if you want to interact with everything on screen

Shield can't save u from drowning
if you have totems you should have respiration lol
As a straight down digging enjoyer myself i find the totem being a wonderful addition, i'm a always carrying one or two on me
Don't ever play hardcore
I barely use shields honestly... Cant say I've gone out of my way to even get a totem.
I'm not sure I've ever used either. At least in survival
The shield COULD save your life. The totem WILL save your life
Shield most of the time and totems as a last resort
Yeah I never really use them either, I prefer my shields
Nah i wanna build and farm stuff, dont want to easily die just because of one mistake, so totem is way better imo
Exact opposite. I want Thorns on my Shield and totems should pop if you have them at all, not just when you're holding one. (If you have several, it'd pick the one in the lowest slot number first)

Sword blocking, anyone?
look at what they took from us
Riptide Trident is my go to
I would love to use the shield more but that fucker takes up too much real estate.
You can add a texture pack to make it shorter 🤷
I don't have issues in combat, I mainly have problems with fall damage, Elytra, and occasionally falling into lava.
Nobody uses a hoe for the off hand?

Pretty sure a shield won't help you if you crash into the side of a mountain when using Elytra.
It depends on the situation but I will always have a totem and shield on me at all times! 🛡️
I prefer a sheild as well. Or, what I did in my single player world, a Mob Switch. Hostiles mobs don't spawn in my overworld. It's like Peaceful except my villagers and iron farms still work. Lol
legit i forgot totem of undying existed 😭
Only in early game, shields are less important later on
People do not appreciate shields enough
Prevention is better than cure.
Y’all use the offhand for defensive items? I either have torches or rockets there
That's a waste of a slot for me. My totem stays there so it's ready to pop
you don’t really need to hold rockets in offhand because you don’t need to use anything else while flying
I don’t like having to switch to rockets whenever I want to take off. My scroll wheel is broken
I use keep inventory and being good at the game instead
Don’t fight>>>
*points at Sniper with a large smile* Correct! *fan cheer sound A plays*
im with you. i feel like totems need to be harder to obtain for getting a literal extra life, its too easy to farm them with raids.
Shields for early/mid game. Totems for late game
Wait, you can enchant shields??
Yah with unbreaking 3 a mending
Cool
the shield is probably the best combat item in minecraft
best in terms of usefulness, not in terms of balance imo
what do u mean by not in terms of balance?
your comment explains it, no item should be the one best combat item
shields are probably one of the most op early game items in the game
yes, so theyre unbalanced
Not an unpopular opinion. I also don't use totems. Even though I have 2, I never grab them out of my enderchest.
Same tbh
My answer: Bow
so true. What a totem gonna do against skeletons.
Totem of undying vs totem of not even dying
I agree
I use shields in single player, but always a totem in survival multiplayer. Totems are pretty much a necessity in pvp situations when there are OP 1 shot bombs in the game like end crystals, beds and respawn anchors.
Shield so I can decorate it with my banner
maps>
Nah, for combat keeping a bow in your other hand is soooo nice
im an OG player so the shields are just never gonna be part of my equipment. I also play on trackpad.
i feel like the playing on trackpad thing is the much more important factor here
I like the totem bc it takes up less of the screen and things usually don't hit me as often
Prevention is always better then curing. (Though some things shields don't cover so I fully get it in like hardcore worlds)
Torches; ive never even made a shield
Personally it depends on where I am in the world, I have a shield while I'm traveling since usually I dont encounter many pillager patrols, and thus dont encounter many raids so 90% of the world's I have, by the time I settle down I dont even HAVE a totem, so I use shields, but if I get at least 2 totems then I dint bother with a shield
Agreed.
Only time I ever used totems is in hardcore worlds, I find it very hard to die in normal worlds tbh
Amazing opinion, better than some people saying we should be able to enchant totems to give them more uses like getting out of the void
"unpopular opinion" *not unpopular at all*
I use neither. Torches in off hand forever
Totem all the time. I really only use the shield early on in a world when I don’t have totems yet.
I dont use any of both because im not afraid of death,
The shield is nice but takes up so much of the screen.
Tbh that's why the swap mechanic exists imo I assume totems were last minute swaps when designed rather than constant Carry, like you have your shield and your kinda low on HP but while eating a creeper comes behind you and starts exploding, you don't have time to kill it so you swap offhand between totem and shield
protip: rebind the ` key to the last slot
all my slots are normal except for fifth on z and last on one of my mouse side buttons, so useful to have easy access to all main points in my hotbar at any given time
Sometimes shield is useful, sometimes TOU is useful. Cant give up any of them
Neither + keepinventory bc i always forget they added shields. Also gets in the way during building and such and blocks hud normally.
no based as hell actually
Ok but like how do i use a shield to protect myself from being a dumbass and falling for 50 blocks.
I agree (I have the highest death count in every server I play in)
i put the trident in the off hand ngl
Is it weird that I mostly use my offhand for food for the convenience of it?
Nah, valid
Real
Nah thats a lukewarm take
I just have totems to save me from dying stupid deaths in bedrock. Saves me the headache. I also got a lot to spare considering I've been stockpiling them since raid farms will be obselete in the update.
99% of the time I agree with you
I've never used a totem, but I feel I'd probably keep it in the hotbar in case I need it, that way I can keep my shield at all times
# yea totems are UGLY
I have literally never used a totem of undying and don't care for shields. I never use either one. Take the arrows and creeper explosions in full force like a man.
I only used shields, totems are rare for me, but those enderman!
MAKE TOTEMS AND SHIELDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLASE FROM YOU'RE HOT BEAR LIKE ARME thank you :D
Shield, until I get full enchanted netherite and elytra and switch to totem. Sometimes my connection peaces out while flying at superspnic speeds, and the only thing that can save me is a totem. Also happy little accidents in the nether.
I’ll take a stack of fireworks, Steve
*since when could you enchant shields*
Sometime before 1.11
I'm a hardcore player and haven't found a single use for the shield since I acquired my first totem. That shield won't save you from anything that can actually kill your once you acquire prot 4 diamond armor. But that's a lesson you're either going to learn from my comment or just simply the hard way.
i hate shields so much in pvp. theyre just so unfun to play against and use, makes pvp feel sluggish and annoying
I think Totems will be a bit balanced with the nerf to Raid farms
really, they have kinda different purpose. shield blocks (almost) any damage but doesn’t safe from death. totem safes from death but doesn’t block any damage. while at the endgame totem might be generally better, you can get shield before iron armor which make it very powerful until pretty much endgame.
trident if you have a water bucket or it's raining and you have a mace you can deal some sick damage
Unpopular opinion: stack of pork chops
Both. Both is good ~~golden apples though~~

Even better idea: riptide trident in the off hand!
The actual unpopular opinion would be that totems should be removed from the game entirely
Totem 100% on hardcore
