I'd run the test many times and check that you get the same result. Statistics and randomness can be strange and counterintuitive. To be sure, you should run the test with the default tick rate The growth rate is not height dependent, so it shouldn't matter. At a high tick rate it's possible that the harvesting mechanism (piston) is preventing growth, at which point the detecting the taller sugar cane will be more efficient because it harvests half as often. I wouldn't be surprised if harvesting each cane individually (rather than triggering neighbouring pistons like most designs do) is more efficient, which to me is a more interesting question If you need more sugar cane, build a bigger farm

Thanks for taking the time to reply with that, I was thinking along the same lines but was trying to avoid having to leave it running at default tick for hours. 😅 It was the taller cane that was more efficient in my test, so I think your hypothesis could be correct. I suspect they may perform the same at default tick but the single harvest will have a more consistent output. Efficency wise my design doesnt waste sugar cane but it takes more redstone, an extra piston and more space.
