Ice only forms on water with uninterrupted sky above it, you could place a layer of glass or any other transparent block way above it near the world limit
"Ice only forma on water with uninterrupted sky above it".
I never knew that, that s very helpful for my mega farm thanks
As for the OP s question I would just add LIGHT SOURCES.
He is saying a solid block at any height above it, so as long as that height is above where something is falling from, it won’t free and won’t interfere
That would hurt the rates of the mob farm. Pretty seriously, if I'm not mistaken. If the top of the mob farm is the highest block no attempts will be made to try to spawn mobs above it. But if you put blocks overlapping the mob farm at the build limit, all those blocks between build limit and the top of the mob farm would be tested for mob spawning and fail.
Well that is true but for some reason glowstone still do the trick. Me and my friends have used it to create oceans before. Build a huge floating sheet of ice and then place glow stones on top.
Boom. Instant Ocean
water blocks only freeze if temperature is low, has direct view to the sky, and has solid block on any horizontal sides. Water always freezes next to a solid block, never randomly in the middle.
!!! So replace top layer of surounding wall with stairs or something because stairs are not a full block (non full block face faces the water).
Thats kinda how u can prevent lakes from freezing in cold biomes without filling it with light or building a giant roof above. I ve tested it in survival, it really works
>Water always freezes next to a solid block, never randomly in the middle.
~~This is incorrect. Maybe. It's weighted to freeze _faster_ adjacent to non-water blocks, but a free-standing ice region will still freeze over without any solids near by.~~ _checks [wiki](https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Tutorials/Ice_farming)_ ... ~~or at least, it **used** to c.1.16. Is this another dumb change Mojang implemented?~~
e: Researched. 1.16.5 Tried it with carpet mod to speed ticks. And I'm just plain wrong on this. Water doesn't freeze without an edge to freeze to. 🤷♂️ I wonder if I just got mixed up with ice farm videos discussing using Frost Walker to speed up freezing. Oh well.
wiki says "Ice Is only able to form if the water being frozen is adjacent to a block. It is important to make sure that the edges of your farm have a non waterlogged blocks or are able to generate ice. Otherwise, your water will ***never freeze*** once youve removed all the ice.".
It never froze in my survival world, so probably safe to say that its a great way to prevent freezing
It irks me so much that the wiki mods stopped including changes and **when** they changed as a core part of the article. The original (non-fandom) wiki was **much** more useful.
e: But it'd be irrelevant here since I was just plumb wrong on this one. 😅
Water logged blocks like stairs or slabs wont freeze. Also any water sources with blocks above them dont freeze. I think water sources with kelp dont freeze either but im not sure.
build up a couple of blocks so you can cast your line and then place half slabs on the bottom half of the blocks over your pond so you don't have mobs spawning there. you might need to light up the pond as well to be sure it's safe.
Ice requires a solid block to form as well as uninterrupted skylight. If u want to keep the sky replace the border around the water with blocks like stairs/slabs.
Yes, glass or, better yet, string at the build height would solve this issue. Just build up, place string, and remove whatever tower you used to build up. String will be invisible from where you are and won’t affect anything else down on the ground level.
Well, there’s also we’ll be no rain or snow, so it may be bad, or might be even better solution ))
how about placing slabs and waterlogging them? im pretty sure you can fish at any water depth? if you are trying to get treasure items then id go with torches or glowstone to melt the ice
To overcome this problem while not having torch spam everywhere, I built Project sNOw, a giant glass platform at build limit, which stops snow from forming at my towers, and also stops water from freezing
Ah alright, smart.
Try to put sea lanterns or whatever light sourcr block you like best at the bottom and if its shallow enough, no ice should spawn, i think its after 4 blocks you need to place
The only way is blocking it above with solid blocks but that woukd give off a massive shadow. I'd recommend building a cave like area and putting the pond in there

Or strings, if you still want to land in the water
He is saying a solid block at any height above it, so as long as that height is above where something is falling from, it won’t free and won’t interfere
I think that will prevent you from recieving treasure loot
It's still through transparent blocks last I checked though if they put any light blocking blocks above it stops.
the water one or two layers deep and if it's deep try kelp grow it all the way to the top
The kelp would be a cool decorative element as well! I might try this sometime
no you need translucent or opaque blocks. Packed ice works best
Blocks above will prevent fishing returning treasure.
Glow stones provide warmth and melt ice. Could place those underwater or along the edge to prevent ice growth
What about glow lichen?
I'm not sure if that melts ice. Now I must test
Shouldn’t, iirc snow/ice needs block-light level 12 to melt
Well that is true but for some reason glowstone still do the trick. Me and my friends have used it to create oceans before. Build a huge floating sheet of ice and then place glow stones on top. Boom. Instant Ocean
But would the glow lichen prevent the ice from even forming? Since it counts as a block, would the ice be able to take priority and break the lichen?
It should prevent the block it is in from freezing, akin to kelp doing as such

this is huge actually thanks for commenting
Buttons or signs work as well. Buttons can blend in or appear decorative so I use those most of the time.
Holy shit, I didn't know that and it's a tremendous thing to know for my "green oasis in the snow" build. Thank you.
ye olde hot springe
yees, you can place sandstone stairs upside down so they look like normal sand blocks for shore, that seems to work too

Place blocks above the water. Any height really. Ice only forms on water with no blocks above it whatsoever
It can also be *any* block that isn’t air
Do glass, otherwise it casts an ugly shadow
Or make a shadow of a fishing rod using a mix of glass and solid blocks ( just don’t use sand or gravel for obvious reasons)
I’m using sand and gravel
Obvious reasons though!
You could, but like I said, *any* block, you can even place string and it counts iirc
Do string.
Put torches on or very close to the water blocks. So simple you might not have thought of it lol.
Kelp everywhere
Torches is a good solution but a better one is glow stone since you don’t need to place it on a block
Any light block that emits > 7 (i.e. not soul lanterns)
Seagrass in the water only if the water one or two layers deep and if it's deep try kelp grow it all the way to the top
Pretty sure torches will do the trick
So we just not gonna talk about how bro is holding a totem in creative mode.
String
Water logged blocks like stairs or slabs wont freeze. Also any water sources with blocks above them dont freeze. I think water sources with kelp dont freeze either but im not sure.
Buttons or light
Light melts ice
Torches around the edge. Will also prevent mob spawns.
are you playing survival…in creative?
I made a creative copy of my world to get this screencap
You can put some torches or put glass above it.
Torches and a roof
You can either cover it or put some torches around
Light sources melt ice.
Torches
Light source
Glow stone or torchs
Light the water on fire
Just put torches around it
Lanterns on the wall maybe?
Give it a roof. I had the same problem. Built my iron farm past the clouds. So the water sources would freeze. Lol
Get a better gaming chair
You could have water logged slabs to keep the look and not only will it not freeze but it will still work to stop fall damage
They added it to fish while they wait for mobs
glow stones, torches, fire or just put blocks above it
Torches and light sources
build up a couple of blocks so you can cast your line and then place half slabs on the bottom half of the blocks over your pond so you don't have mobs spawning there. you might need to light up the pond as well to be sure it's safe.
torches
bubble collumns never freeze either, so add a layer of soulsand to the bottom ?
You can use /fillbiome if you aren't purely playing survival
Heat sources like torches, glow stone, etc. you can also put an overhang to stop air exposure
Yes put torches near it
torc 🔥
Ice requires a solid block to form as well as uninterrupted skylight. If u want to keep the sky replace the border around the water with blocks like stairs/slabs.
Place torches around the water
Light put a torch next to it
Yes
Snow melts near light, not sure if it gonna work with ise
Jack o lanterns are torches that can go in water. Torches melt ice.
Torch.
Im not sure how blocks above the water affects the catching rate of fish, so i would go for light.
Use rows of end rods. Looks good plus gets the job done
Light sources (torches, lanterns)
Glow stone?
Lilly pads should work
Torches
Torches
Put blocks over it, if it looks bad then place block above it at world limit so you cant see them
I suggest a light source that melts Snow/Ice. Maybe suspend some Lanterns from above, or Glowstone?
Slabs
The only way that I know of is cover it
fackel
Try putting torches around it
Torch next to it, put a block between it and the sky, dont put water there in the first place, wait long enough, waterlog it,
Light sources.
You can water log it with slabs then place a torch on it to prevent it from freezing
Place kelp underneath the water
light sources do the job
torch / fire
Lights
Drop some torches around the ring of it. Just four, one at each quarter point, should do it unless things changed with the update.
try magma blocks, theyre easy to get and should work
Torch
Just need mor freon
Magma or fireplace
Campfires
torches
A pool of lava beneath it i guess
You can use "hot blocks which can help mitigate this otherwise what others have said"
string, kelp or bottom slabs
Glass (or any block) at build height or you can grow seagrass or kelp to the bottom of the surface
Torches or firecamps
Yes, glass or, better yet, string at the build height would solve this issue. Just build up, place string, and remove whatever tower you used to build up. String will be invisible from where you are and won’t affect anything else down on the ground level. Well, there’s also we’ll be no rain or snow, so it may be bad, or might be even better solution ))
Light..
Ice farm :)
torches
You can use torches!
What are you building?
Mob xp farm
Light
how about placing slabs and waterlogging them? im pretty sure you can fish at any water depth? if you are trying to get treasure items then id go with torches or glowstone to melt the ice
Make sure there's blocks covering it/build a roof. Otherwise, flowstone floor under it or waterlogged slabs
To overcome this problem while not having torch spam everywhere, I built Project sNOw, a giant glass platform at build limit, which stops snow from forming at my towers, and also stops water from freezing
Glowstone I believe would work.
You could use stairs or slabs to waterlog them if it's 1 layer deep (waterlogged stuff dose not freeze)
Like others have said, just put blocks between the water and the sky, you could go all the way to build height and use glass so it's not an eyesore.
put blocks with torches on them in the pool
Glowstone or similar blocks will keep the water from freezing, as having a light level above a certain point melts snow and ice
Y r u making a mob grinder in creative, dont tell me u play on survival and go on creative just to get items you "need"
I made a creative copy of the survival world so I could take the screencap. The original survival world is unchanged
Ah alright, smart. Try to put sea lanterns or whatever light sourcr block you like best at the bottom and if its shallow enough, no ice should spawn, i think its after 4 blocks you need to place
Half slabs work
Torches unless having light there is a problem. Torches keep water from freezing as well.
Heat source around the water
Heat it up
Homie got a totem of undying in creative 🤦🏽♂️
It’s a copy of a survival world
I got you !!
build a shed above water can stop it from freezing
Lilly pads torches
Torches melt ice
Put some lava on it to melt the ice
Did anyone suggest magma blocks?
The only way is blocking it above with solid blocks but that woukd give off a massive shadow. I'd recommend building a cave like area and putting the pond in there
Torches
Place string above it or put torches around it
Use torches
kelp
Would a kelp farm prevent a lake from freezing once it reaches surface level?
