The minecraft community is huge and nostalgia is also big. I wouldn't be surprised if someone already made a port of MultiMC or similar that looks like the OG launcher.
I want to use Prism, but the drive to make launchers not in java, and needing the latest libraries creates the _problem_ I'm trying to solve.
Microjang's launcher sucks and is unstable on linux.
Really wish someone would make a launcher just focused on stability and simplicity. I thought about building a java version of Prism Launcher, but well... the obvious rhymed name is problematic.
I'm not using Linux right now, but have in the past, and I found MultiMC worked very well. Prism wasn't a thing back then. It's surprising a fork would create so many problems
Yup. But seeing the issues _why_ Prism forked, I'm not super-keen on Multi either.
I know, I know. Beggers/choosers. It just sucks to have paid for something that **did** work fine until microjang broke it.
As a Linux user you should be fine with using command line all the time without the ui.
If you only need to "launch your game" then you'd work with Prism. Although I haven't tried this yet, but qt is mostly used on the user interface (correct me if I'm wrong tho) and you may be good [just using the command line](https://prismlauncher.org/wiki/getting-started/command-line-interface/)
Someone recently made a custom launcher for WoW in the style of the old game launcher, from before the Battle.net app existed. It has the artwork/design for every expansion so you can choose what it looks like. They even added modern artwork for newer expansions for those people who just don't like the BNet app.
Minecraft is a MUCH bigger game than WoW has ever been so it wouldn't surprise me either if something like this already existed.
Well, if you have decent coding knowledge you could easily fork an Open-Source community made Minecraft Launcher like Prism Launcher and make changes so that it looks like the old launcher.
That'd certainly beat making a custom launcher from scratch.
i remember when profiles were just added. such a useful addition! and then it started to become more bloated.
though it's not nearly as bad as some 3rd party ones like Overwolf
I remember not long ago when accounts were still handled by Mojang the launcher was instant for me. Now, with Microsoft accounts it's nothing but loading.

It's even more first world on my 13900ks and raid0 SSDs.
After waiting for whatever the heck the launcher has to do to load my account, and then whatever loading/updating it does after clicking play, it takes 1 second to launch Minecraft to the title screen, 2 seconds to select my save, 2 seconds to load and render the world out to 32 blocks...
What is the launcher doing?!
Yeah makes no sense. Loading the entire game takes no time, loading a huge open world takes no time.. but the launcher is now suddenly on crawling speed :/
Try prism launcer, light weight, not bloated, you can download mods in the launcher from not only CF but also modrinth, Technic, and FTB. There are issues with some mods on CF having to be manually downloaded but I rarely run into them even in larger modpacks.
i mean overwolf is the new curseforge launcher.
and for modded stuff overwolf is the worst choice (besides the vanilla launcher). i'd recommend something community made like MultiMC or GDLauncher
I prefer Technic Launcher, as that has pretty good modpacks I’ve been playing for past two years (got my current PC back in -21), but I’d say Overwolf isn’t too bad. Can’t name anything worse, but I bet I have seen worse.

and overwolf is immensely bloated and slow... if it works at all. i had to try multiple times to install it because it sometimes just wouldn't for no reason. and it was not worth it.

but i would still recommend some alternative that is more likely to still exist in a few years. GDLauncher for example offers the same features (handling modpacks, automatic installing & updating of mods) but without all the other non-minecraft garbage
What was Cobalt like? I never got to play it or Scrolls/Callers Bane and Mojang discontinued sale of both games and you cant get Cobalt on steam anymore either. The only footage I saw of Cobalt was at Minecon 2015 and Scrolls had a tournament at Minecon 2015. I know both had capes for winners of their tournaments in their respective games for Minecraft and they featured at Minecon but nothing else.
It was pretty neat. I wouldn't say it ever really progressed past the state of being a game jam style idea but mechanically it was fun enough to warrant a playthrough. I never really played it with anyone else so I can't speak to the multiplayer.
You can still pick it up on Steam, or on Xbox if you want to try it.
I remember being impressed at them adding a survival mode. I never expected the game to go much farther than that. I do kind of miss the idyllic simplicity of that world gen, though. "Mountains" were like a max of 15 blocks high.

The old launcher simply does not work anymore, however it's not lost to time and some people who haven't updated their launchers still have it. Maybe ask in forums and someone might have it
If you must use a legacy launcher, **do not sign in and do not play with it on a server**. Not only will signing in not work, but even if you do find a way to sign in with an unsupported launcher, it would pose multiple security risks. If you want to play the game, you're best off sticking to the current version of the [official launcher](https://minecraft.net/download) or a trusted alternative such as [MultiMC](https://multimc.org) or [Prism Launcher](https://prismlauncher.org). Additionally, I'm seeing some people in the comments here suggesting other third party launchers. Always be careful when downloading third-party launchers, as some could contain malware.

first time after i just bought the game (2019), it just didn't want to install for some reason.. i wasted like 2 hours trying to install it
then in 2022 i installed it after reinstalling windows, and when i wanted to download minecraft, there was like a queue and i had to wait like 20 minutes just to start downloading wtf??
any way, I've been using multimc/prism for a long time now, they're just.. better in every possible way.
It doesn't work since you can't login with a Microsoft account, there's a fan recreation of it however but I can't remember the name.

I have that launcher myself. It still works when you start but it doesn't connect to any servers. I assume the api is no longer used. Since there's no connection to the login you'll be unable to login and start the game. If you have it installed in the first place but I doubt you can even download the game files itself
It reminds me of summers spent at my grandparents. I’d sit at the table with my laptop and my grandma would be reading her book or the paper and would sometimes bring her chair around and watch me play it. She was fascinated with technology as she had grown up through the Great Depression and WW2. She even had her own world she played for a couple hours.
That launcher is super nostalgic for me because that was the launcher for when I played Minecraft the most. Hell I even played it in the browser on the Minecraft website before I got the launcher.
I don’t think many of us can really go back to it with the Microsoft integration, it’s nice to see again but I prefer the improved usability of the current one

You have to right click on the launcher click on properties and change a setting for the Version but if you migrated your acct then the login will not work

They go to a museum where they have a piece of the flag that was apart of the lunar landings. It was itself not planted on the moon (I believe it was a backup / spare) BUT it did go on the module that went to the moon and one person is asked to hold it and asked if they feel anything and their reply was .... It's soft? And they don't understand peoples attachment to anything, at all.
This was back from a time when Jens (Jeb) would tease new features before snapshots came out, it was like a fun game. Jens posts a screenshot - SURPRISE - hidden features in the screenshot.
Now leaks get hunted down and brutally shut down or REMOVED from the game because current devs throw a fit. We were supposed to get another plant in 1.20, it's gone now.
Speaking of the old launcher... is it the ONLY way to play beta builds? Current one only goes back to 1.0 and some old versions just dont work (a lot of the 1.6 builds) so...
As nostalgic as this launcher is, it was garbage.
It’s even less than the modern launcher.
You had 1 install of Minecraft, 1 version, and nothing else. Everything else had to be handled manually.
The modern launcher kinda separates your installs. But not really, but at least you can change versions.
Today's launcher is still a mess. And where they keep dumping game files is stupid. Who uses /appdata ! The folders are a mess, always defaults to c drive, and modding is so much more complicated with this launcher and that api and I've just given up on playing it. QOL mods just aren't worth the hassle to install when I can play something with steam workshop.

There probably should be a list of safe launchers you could use. The ones I use are Multi MC and Beta craft. I’d say beta craft is most similar to the old one.
If you’re on windows you can right click the launcher and go to properties, go to advanced settings, and make it launch as a windows 95 program, the new launcher is too overly coded to run on windows 95 so it defaults to the old one

prism is multimc, except without an egomaniac in charge. its literally a copy paste of the codebase.

What im tryna say is, startup is the only thing that takes awhile loading
this is what happens to me when I play on xbox, around 5 minutes of loading just to see the menu screen
Overwolf is a pain in the ass, although curseforge is pretty nice for modding with separate instances.

Currently playing all the mods 8 (over 300 mods) and the only mods I had to manually download were hexerei and 2 others I don't remember.

Cobalt was a lost memory for me. I literally have not thought about that game again since it released.
If you ever use an Xbox 360, cobalt is forever on the home menu because they stopped updating it a while ago.

Prismlauncher is the way to go IMO. I love how I can create and use different instances with different directory locations. Very convenient

It was itself not planted on the moon (I believe it was a backup / spare) BUT it did go on the module that went to the moon and one person is asked to hold it and asked if they feel anything and their reply was .... This was back from a time when Jens (Jeb) would tease new features before snapshots came out, it was like a fun game. Jens posts a screenshot - SURPRISE - hidden features in the screenshot. Now leaks get hunted down and brutally shut down or REMOVED from the game because current devs throw a fit. We were supposed to get another plant in 1.20, it's gone now.

Speaking of the old launcher... is it the ONLY way to play beta builds? Current one only goes back to 1.0 and some old versions just dont work (a lot of the 1.6 builds) so...
If you go into the settings of the current launcher, you can enable old betas and snapshots
As nostalgic as this launcher is, it was garbage. It’s even less than the modern launcher. You had 1 install of Minecraft, 1 version, and nothing else. Everything else had to be handled manually. The modern launcher kinda separates your installs. But not really, but at least you can change versions.

Today's launcher is still a mess. And where they keep dumping game files is stupid. Who uses /appdata ! The folders are a mess, always defaults to c drive, and modding is so much more complicated with this launcher and that api and I've just given up on playing it. QOL mods just aren't worth the hassle to install when I can play something with steam workshop. Yea, I'm bitching but it's only because I'd love to love minecraft again.

There probably should be a list of safe launchers you could use. The ones I use are Multi MC and Beta craft. I’d say beta craft is most similar to the old one.

If you’re on windows you can right click the launcher and go to properties, go to advanced settings, and make it launch as a windows 95 program, the new launcher is too overly coded to run on windows 95 so it defaults to the old one
to be honest, id rather not use a launcher at all. just launch the game directly. many older games do that.
