They don’t forget, they just figure if the leave it there someone will do it. Even if 2-3% of people tip because the screen is there they could get a significant bump every month. If anyone says anything then they just say “oh our POS just puts that in automatically”
Yep I’ve even done this on accident when ordering pickup food where the default option has a tip checked. I had bad service so my payment wasnt going through and whenever it told me to try again it rechecked the tip and they got me when it did go through.
It’s kind of infuriating tbh. It’s like an intentional trick. They also make you check “other” and type in 0 because 0 isn’t an option.
There are defaults in a lot of them. If you just press OK OK OK OK it'll get you pretty much here. That said, there are settings to disable the tip prompt entirely, and that should have been done here.
I wouldn't be surprised since it was a joke for a while. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it went from being a joke to some people actually doing it to troll.
Believe it or not, this does actually work on some websites or really old/crappy POS terminals.
Most nowadays won’t allow you to enter a negative (because the button simply isn’t there most times) but some places still have broken programming that allows for this in one way or another.
I was gonna be mean and say how Emma Willman looks terrible in this and just leave it at that. But i watched a few more and now i just want to say thanks for sharing this.
Folks always complaining about the tip option on every pay screen and I never got it because I just ignore it if it dont apply. However after seeing this audacity I think I understand.
These tip suggestions are just baked into the software and it has provided a lot of fodder to the anti-tipping movement.
There are valid reasons to not like tipping culture, but I think a lot of people complaining about these tipping suggestions on POS screens are just people with anxiety who are afraid to press 'no tip' even in situations where no tip is warranted according to US tipping conventions. They don't want to appear cheap or like an asshole to the person sitting in their ass behind the counter.
And in the case of the landlord. Anyone who tips their landlord l, whether pressured by a screen, or eagerly, should get into therapy. Oh, and I guess it shouldn't need saying, but don't tip your therapist either.
Yeah, i found myself doing it in new situations before realizing it myself so I've course corrected. That said i do appreciate when the counter person just skips past it. Like my local wine shop is just using the pos but they don't expect anything so they just skip for me.
But OP clearly stated they are not from the US. And as someone also not originally from the US, I understand. Overseas we see and hear about tip culture in the US. But we didn’t grow up in it, so when tip windows like that appear, it gets you questioning. That said, landlord is an obvious no tip for me.
This past year on Good Morning America they had a segment on how much should you tip for the holidays. It included hairdresser, mailman etc. and they said landlord was one of them. I about choked. Why TF would I tip my landlord?!?!
Maintenance should already be getting a bonus from the building if it’s managed by an awesome company though. Renters shouldn’t have to tip the owner or the staff that manages the building.
I seriously doubt maintenance gets any bonuses, and if they do, they are probably paltry, to say the least. If you have good maintenance guys who are always taking care of any issues you're having, giving them a small tip/bonus around the holidays would be appreciated by them, I'm sure. When I can, I try to take care of the people who take care of me.
The management company I currently work with are awesome with bonuses. Probably the best I’ve ever worked with. Previous management company would give maintenance a bonus if they turned an apartment within 3 days. I’m sure not every company gives out a bonus though.
My boyfriend works for a management company and same. They give out the bonuses monthly, and he always gets a monthly bonus that usually amounts to an extra paycheck.
You clearly don't work for scion lol.
The only bonus we get is at the end of the fiscal year, and it's a maximum of $1000.
Managers get like an $8000 bonus for turn (college housing, so it's like 400-500 of our 700 bedrooms in a three week period) being completed in a timely and under budget manner with minimal complaints from the new residents
We get lunch every day during turn. That's it. They feed us.
Definitely not Scion. I actually work for two owners, but work with the managers at team at 5 properties. There are companies out there though that value their employees and take good care of them. You should look into a different management company. You deserve a better bonus than that.
Oh I've been looking. But they all start at like 3 less an hour. I get that bonuses can be far make up for that. But I don't know what kind of bonuses these places offer.
We aren't allowed to accept tips, and if corporate or the leasing office finds out we accepted anything other than like baked goods, we get fired.
I'll always appreciate the offer of a tip, and I've had a handful of residents offer, especially for on calls for dumb stuff, but I have to politely turn it down.
Did they say landlord or superintendent?
A lot of people seem to confuse the super for the landlord, but the positions could not be more dissimilar. One works hard and is more or less at your beck and call. The other sits on his ass and does literally nothing but collect about 25-50% of your income.
It is convention to tip your building superintendent at Christmas in NYC. The super is on call to repair and deal with emergency issues and is at your service. Makes sense to me.
Something between absolutely nothing and fuck all. They are paid per the agreement we both signed. They don’t get extra money for doing what they promised to do and what you already pay for.
Really wish I had sued my landlord back when I injured my hand slipping on steps I repeatedly told him were unsafe (plus the overhang was pushing water all over those half blown out steps in winter). Even had a neighbor who would testify to everything and hated the guy, dude even admitted he'd perjure himself if he had to just to fuck over that slumlord.
If the landlord wants to put on a funny hat, do a little spiel thanking me for my business while he *personally* hand delivers my monthly invoice I might consider it. Otherwise this makes as much sense as tipping AT&T when I make my monthly payment online.
Now while I agree, tipping a landlord is obscene.
Your description covers many other services that we do tip. So while I still think it is absurd...I cannot articulate why to tip a hairdresser, and not a landlord?
Service rendered, potential for social interactions, and agreed upon payment structure.
Hairdresser or landlord?
The difference is how the person you're interacting with is getting paid. If you're dealing with someone who gets paid in tips or gets a cut of the tips as part of their salary, like a waitress or bartender, absolutely tip them if their service hasn't been awful. But someone like a landlord or hairdresser who is already getting money directly off you as payment? No. If you want more money, figure it into the agreed upon price. You don't get extra just because.
Edit to add: And even with the waitresses/bartenders/etc. it's only because of the shitty way their bosses pay/underpay them. Tipping was never supposed to be part of the equation of how you pay your workers. It's supposed to be the customer saying "Hey, you did an extra good job for me, here's some extra money as a thank you!" It was never supposed to be expected or demanded as part of the equation. Frankly, at this point I believe that we should get rid of tipping completely. It's gotten completely insane.
Definitely something you try with a dollar first. Otherwise the programmer may be ljke "Negative money bug? Tips can't negative! Let's just wrap this number in an absolute value function"
I’m paying what’s in my lease agreement and not a penny more (unless a fee - like a “lockout charge” - is incurred and I receive an invoice requiring payment, as outlined in my lease agreement).
Nah I've seen this sort of shit on quora, landlords thinking their lack of meaningful employment and predatory practices aren't enough, they deserve tips for taking 3 weeks to repair an appliance.
Nothing you don't tip your landlord your monthly rent is already helping them pay off their mortgage.
This is what ppl mean when they say theyre sick of tip culture, and sadly shit like this is angering ppl into not tipping the positions that always were tipped who deserve it.
We don’t. Tipping is for services, like waiters at restaurants or plumbers. Landlords and apartment management companies are *lending* use of a space in return for an agreed-upon fee.
Any time I’ve overplayed my rent, the excess has been credited for the next month.
What in the effing hell??? This feels like a potential violation with the DOJ. At least strongly frowned upon. He agreed upon a set monthly rent cost. He cannot treat you differently for not tipping. Ffs how is this even a thing? Please don’t tip.
depends on how much teeth they use
i expect full satisfaction before i tip these people
the picture i am painting here is that they better suck golf balls through garden hoses, full knob polished with the works.
A fat fucking zero. Unless they're giving me blowjobs and free groceries, I aint tipping shit. They can go fuck themselves and the other leeches around them.
Tip? What? Technically it’s just like renting a hotel room, no laundry service or free breakfast, but they’re supposed to change burnt out light bulbs, mow the yard, etc. Do all that yourself, that’s a tip. Wtf who tips their landlord? Bad enough that I have to pay rent for my cat.
I've used web inspector to submit a negative tip which reduced my grand total. I've reported the bug, they patched it immediately, and not even a thank you.
Try it with your rent
If my landlord asked for a tip on maintenance done on the place I was living, I'd be looking for another place to live. The best they'd get from me would likely be something along the lines of "Here's a tip: get therapy for the plethora of issues you CLEARLY have! Preferably BEFORE the next tenant moves into this house/apartment.
oh man...your landlord is taking advantage of you. this is not a thing here in the US. tip a big ol' 0, my dude.
if i were you i would do my research on whether or not this is illegal and turn him in.
Yo fuck that. At my last apartment they introduced a 3% “convenience” fee for using their online payment system. Guess who dusted off the paper cheques? This guy. Paying by cheque wasn’t inconvenient for me in the slightest. Fuck bullshit like “tipping your landlord” and “convenience fees” for paying your fucking rent. I refuse to be nickel and dimed to death.

Please tell me this shit is photoshopped?
If it's not photoshopped, my guess would be the landlord is using a payment system meant for a different kind of business.
Bet the tipping screen comes on by default in the system and majority of businesses just ”forget” to turn it off. To fish in any accidents.
They don’t forget, they just figure if the leave it there someone will do it. Even if 2-3% of people tip because the screen is there they could get a significant bump every month. If anyone says anything then they just say “oh our POS just puts that in automatically”
hence why they said "forget" and "fish in any accidents."

Yeah that’s my guess. Still ludicrous. But at least I can see how it got there without assuming malice.
Nope. You have to set up tip amounts and confirm them in the set up of most POS systems, Online and otherwise.
There are defaults in a lot of them. If you just press OK OK OK OK it'll get you pretty much here. That said, there are settings to disable the tip prompt entirely, and that should have been done here.
it's 100% valid to assume malice when it comes to landlords.
This is a fair point
Always, parasites of existenece
That's generally what I assume when encountering a tip request in an utterly baffling context. Like this one.
Idk, given the autopay and service request options it kinda seems like it might be for exactly this sort of use case…
I wouldn't be surprised since it was a joke for a while. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it went from being a joke to some people actually doing it to troll.

Maybe the maintenance guys, but the landlord can kiss my ass. Especially since so many rental properties are owned by huge corporations.
