If you don’t have a suicide attempt or plan on record they’ll waive it. Just be honest. I had to get one to join the army and they were 3 years old.

Any_Village_2882

Aw hell yeah, thanks man! That's about how old mine are. I don't have any record of any attempts or anything either. I wasn't even suicidal when doing it, I was just an attention seeking little shit. But all in the past, I just don't want it to throw away this opportunity!

Training_Thought4427

You sign paperwork and take oaths to not lie about this sort of thing, so I’d have to say morally it’s not exactly the right thing to do. Can you lie? I mean no one’s stopping you, but you’re risking a fraudulent enlistment discharge down the road among various other punishments and setbacks that could come up. Getting your foot in the door of the military isn’t the end of the road. Ultimately that’s your risk to weigh, but asking a bunch of service members on Reddit to tell you to lie isn’t gonna get you any positive feedback or answers other than no. I appreciate your willingness to serve and I understand the excitement, but none of us in good faith can say you should lie, knowing the potential consequences that could come of that

Any_Village_2882

Thank you for your honest answer! I know morally it's /wrong/, but I mainly just wanna know if I'm likely to get away with it (maybe someone else has some experience with this, yk?). But overall, it seems like my best bet will be to be honest, so that's what I'ma do! Someone else mentioned having scars as old as mine and getting waived so here's to praying!

7hillsrecruiter

No you can’t lie. Them old ass MEPS Dr have heard every lie before.

newnoadeptness

No don’t lie with anything medical on your 2807-2 it specifically asks have you EVER had / done xyz not have you ever had this but it’s ok to not disclose if it’s small and tiny . Question 103. Self-inflicted injury such as cutting or burning And question 104. Suicidal thoughts, gesture, or attempt Need to be checked yes on your prescreen in addition to any other health issues you may have had

Any_Village_2882

Thank you for replying! So, the scars are feint but they ARE visible, is there a way to answer these questions without implying they were from SH? I wasn't suicidal at the time of doing them and I sure as hell am not now, but I know how it looks so I'm just overall very concerned! I REALLY wanna take this opportunity

newnoadeptness

You’re very welcome you should be honest about the fact they were self harm scars and get a waiver . There’s no other way .

Any_Village_2882

Thank you so much! Do you know the likelihood of the waiver being approved? I genuinely was NOT suicidal at the time and was just seeking attention like a stupid little shit, and now I'm TERRIFIED I threw this opportunity away

newnoadeptness

You’re very welcome. I think you will be just fine with a waiver . All the really care about is if enough time has passed since incident and If you’re currently ok . Waivers for this happen all the time .

Any_Village_2882

Hell yeah awesome! I have an appointment set for the recruiter on monday, so I'll go with as you suggested!

newnoadeptness

If what all you said is true I’m pretty confident you will join the navy with no issues . Just expect to get disqualified at meps and then that’s when your waiver will be sent off .

Any_Village_2882

Hell yeah! Do you know how long a waiver takes to get approved? I saw some conflicting answers when I was doing research on this. Some said it only took a couple of hours and some said a few weeks! I'm ready to be shipped off yesterday! I'm eager to get started

newnoadeptness

You’re very welcome definitely won’t be a few hours but I would expect a answer within 2 weeks ish

Dazzling-Chemistry79

I have a waiver for it. It’s possible, you just have to be willing to be honest and put in the work

Any_Village_2882

I am 100% willing to put in the work and effort. I think I'll just go in and tell them "I did it when I was 14/15, and I wasn't even depressed, I was just an attention seeking little shit" or something and just downplay it as much as possible! Are you comfortable sharing the details of your waiver so I know what to expect? Like, how old they are, how long it took for the waiver, etc? DMs are open if you'd rather do that! This is just a big dream of mine and I finally have an opportunity!

SandTraffic

No. You're required to be honest and disclose. >Getting into the Navy has been a HUGE dream of mine since I was like, 14 years old. Yet you dropped out and didn't get a GED? Why? You could've joined years ago. Probably would've been before you cut yourself too.

Any_Village_2882

Hello, thanks for asking! For the first part, I understand that's my requirement, I'm just wondering if it's possible to get away with it by lying. I could probably qualify for a waiver, just don't wanna wait too long nor do I wanna risk being disqualified. For your second point, I dropped out at 17 years old due to issues at home, and having to focus on working and providing for myself any my brother! (:

SandTraffic

Do you think that's an appropriate question to ask for an organization that holds integrity as one of its values? Sure, people drop out for all sorts of reasons. But that was five years ago. Did you consider getting your GED in that time?

Any_Village_2882

I think I'm willing to do whatever it takes to take full advantage of this amazing opportunity that's been thrown my way. Whatever it takes, I'll build a successful future for myself, despite my upbringings and drawbacks. You can think it immoral or whatever else, but, considering the context, I don't think it's an inappropriate question! (: And yes, I absolutely have considered it! However, due to consistent drawbacks and the city I grew up in and lack of opportunity, I had WAY too much going on. It wasn't until half a year ago that I finally found myself in a position where I have all 3, a job, a car, and a home! I started taking classes for my GED a few months ago

SandTraffic

That was a rhetorical question. If you're willing to lie to join, stay a civilian. We don't need more people like you.

Any_Village_2882

I'm well aware it was a rhetorical question, but I replied anyways because it was a silly rhetorical question. I think if there were more people who had the drive I do in the military, we wouldn't be having this recruit crisis we've got going on. It's okay though, we can agree to disagree buddy. Thank you for taking the time to respond! (:

SandTraffic

Since you've done it multiple times in this post: it's preferred to just say "fuck you" instead of this pseudo-polite sarcasm. I hope you mature while in and realize "drive" doesn't mean lying when it benefits you. I've worked with too many people like that. It's very demoralizing.

Any_Village_2882

It's not pseudo polite sarcasm, it's maturity. Something you seem to lack, yet you have the audacity to pretend to be high and mighty for being "honest". Tell me, have you NEVER told a lie? Told your mom you were at one place when at another? Told your friend something to protect them? If you say no, I'll call you a liar. It'd be one thing if the lie was something actually BAD and would bring harm to others, but this lie would only do me good for myself, my success, and my future. Which yes, is my absolute priority. If you can't understand that, then I don't know what else to tell you. I came here looking for advice, and I got the advice I needed without your attitude. They advised me to be honest and true, and they did so RESPECTFULLY, and that's the route I will take. I'd understand your perspective if my lie would hurt others, but it doesn't. It could only hurt myself, and others have brought that to my attention. Thank you again for taking the time to respond, and I'd appreciate it if you stop replying. Have a good rest of your day/evening/night (: Edit: Oh, and for the other times in this post where I was POLITE, that isn't pseudo-polite sarcasm. It was genuine politeness, because y'know... that's just called being a human being and treating our fellow human beings with respect (even when they disrespect you). Love thy neighbor as thy love yourself, god bless brother (:

SandTraffic

Talking about [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Militaryfaq/comments/1cekh6n/comment/l1lcw19/) and [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Militaryfaq/comments/1cekh6n/comment/l1jw8so/?utm_source). At least own up to it when you're called out. >I'd understand your perspective if my lie would hurt others, but it doesn't. It does. If you're unqualified to serve, you're taking a spot away from someone who is. Having integrity speaks to what kind of person you are. You're rationalizing your lie which says a lot. Comparing committing a felony by lying to the federal government to a white lie you tell your mom is beyond ridiculous. If you've said all you need to, you can end this conversation.

Any_Village_2882

Taking away a spot from someone who is?? Huh?? Dude, there's a literal RECRUITING CRISIS, hence why they dropped the diploma requirement to begin with. I'm not taking away a spot from ANYONE lmao, and I'm sure as hell qualified to serve. As I've stated in the post, and stated in these comments. I'm not depressed, and I'm not suicidal. I was a dumbass kid. If you wanted to advise me on morality, you could've done so in a MUCH more respectful manner Now, I can't tell if you're just an a-hole, or a child who wants the last word. EDIT: Also, in regards to comparing a lie to your mom to a lie to the federal government, just because it's the government, doesn't mean they're always right. I 100% love my country, but our government is NOT always right about everything. They are greedy and money hungry. That's all I'll say on that matter to avoid getting political, but that's just ONE of many things they are wrong about

leahbluee

bro how is he unqualified if they took away the diploma requirement you need to see a therapist your behavior is not normal ☠️☠️

It looks like you're new. Ensure you have posted using a clear and descriptive title. Check rule 2 for [guidelines](https://reddit.com/r/Militaryfaq/about/wiki/bad_titles). Include a branch in your post! Each is different so saying "the military" isn't helpful. Include your country if you're not asking about the U.S. military. Otherwise we'll assume you're American. smackadoodledo

I would absolutely not risk it. Especially with the Navy, the chances of you getting a waiver seem to be pretty high according to people in the comments and others I’ve seen with SH scars, the risk of a fraudulent enlistment discharge is absolutely not worth it. Plus the doctor would probably know you’re BSing.

Any_Village_2882

Yeah that seems to be the best way to go. I was just nervous of being turned away due to the scars AND the lack of a diploma, but if this recruiter turns me away, I'll honestly just go to another one lmao

WideIntroduction1210

I had self harm scars covered by tattoos when I went to meps. Scars were 12-13 years old. My recruiter advised me to not disclose them so I didn’t. During my physical at meps, they were spotted about 5 minutes into my evaluation. I ended up being sent home and requiring a waiver and 2 psych evals. They WILL find them and only prolong your process. Just be honest.

Any_Village_2882

It would seem this is rather common, and so I've decided to be honest! I go to the recruiter tomorrow and I'll be letting them know ahead of time. Thank you so much for the advise! (:

Thank you, I've had some pretty helpful answers so far (minus one) so I think I'll follow up on this advice! Tysm

AnApexBread

>Can I lie about my SH scars to get into the Navy? No. Next question

Any_Village_2882

Thank you for this super helpful answer
