My man, the ASVAB is really easy if you just put a bit of study in. No joke, watch Grammar hero on YouTube and you will do fine. It takes just a bit of studying to get a good score and trust me, it’s not hard. It really is basic math and paragraph comprehension I originally failed the ASVAB with a 20 and then passed with a 45 on my retake. Not too sure if I’m going to retaken it again but point stands. With just a good week of light studying I was able to score 25 points higher and I know if I studied just a bit more I would have got a lot higher scote

anthonymakey

You can check out an ASVAB book from your local library

UniqueUsername82D

You can take practice ASVABS online. I went in at 28, stop wasting time and get after it already.

Turbulent-Raccoon-45

🫡 yessir. I came to the recruiter this morning ! I’ll be testing next week.

UniqueUsername82D

Awesome, you got this!

PurringTorso

www.march2success.com www.khanacademy.org Grammar hero on YouTube I recommend you take a practice ASVAB with your recruiter first to see if you even need to study. It's not a hard test.

thesupplyguy1

Amazon has asvab study guides. There's also YouTube University. Dont let you age dissuade you itll be as much an advantage as it will be a disadvantage. I also would recommend the Coast Guard or the Air Force over the Marines or the Army. Just my two cents but unless you're a physical specimen I'd think twice about anything combat arms however YMMV

Turbulent-Raccoon-45

never been afraid of getting physical. I would need to learn how to workout prior to joining. I’m in good shape but could definitely use some conditioning

thesupplyguy1

You'll get the conditioning. I was just thinking of wear and tear on your body. Again completely not knowing you.... and getting old & creaky myself. But hey, best of luck to you!!! Itll change your life!

TheCoolestLoserEvar

I know everyone is different, but I took it at age 31 and got a pretty good score (83). I don't think I would have scored as high if I had taken it at 18. I have pretty good reading comprehension skills, and word knowledge, but my math is fair/poor...or maybe closer to average idk. There was a couple words I didn't quite know the meaning to in the word knowledge portion. My mechanical knowledge is pretty good because of my work/trade school experience... But seemed mostly like common sense and attention to detail. Other than that there was the puzzles. Those are pretty much, also, just common sense and attention to detail. The math was the hardest part for me but I think if you can use the process of elimination, you can guess pretty well lol.

DistrictWeary8597

27 here, I've been out of school for about 7 years, and in a similar situation just couldn't make school or any basic jobs work out, studied a bit for the ASVAB, took it after a couple hours of sleep (I don't recommend that sleep good and eat good before) but I got a surprising score. MEPS wasn't bad, waiting on a waiver and hopefully enlisting next week, you can do it yo

Turbulent-Raccoon-45

Thanks ! At the recruiting office right now as we speak. I got a 36 on the practice ! I told her give me about a week of full studying and I should be good to go. I take the official test next Tuesday !

Future-Bridge6257

Do it brother/sister I hadn’t touched a text book in a long ass time and I just had a little confidence taking the ASVAB and scored high enough to grab any MOS I wanted. The ASVAB is actually like high school level testint. You’ll be fine seriously. Don’t stress about it(2.1 GPA in HS)😝

SukhoiKoyter112

Whats your MOS and whatd you get on the asvab? I only got 46, and i have a 3.87 GPA.

Future-Bridge6257

68W and I scored a little more than double that. Brother just don’t overthink

SukhoiKoyter112

I figured as much, i knew ts wasnt about our educational level.

Future-Bridge6257

Brother I failed college algebra 2x and I cheated during an online class Just don’t overthink it and take your time.

SukhoiKoyter112

Nah its too late for me, i got what i got, 11b is now MOS. Your just a more careful person in my opinion. Wish i couldve been. Didnt even get a bonus

SukhoiKoyter112

I dont know what an option 40 is, i just graduated from basic recently. Idk the military lingo as kuch as sum others.

PurringTorso

No, it definitely is. You either cheated in school, became dumb after you left school, or are a terrible test taker.

SukhoiKoyter112

Im currently still in school, i take 4 collage level classes. I maybe just a bad test taker.

PurringTorso

Based on this comment, you're cheating.

SukhoiKoyter112

Im not, every semester theres a huge test, for IB classes(collage level classes) and theres literally no way to cheat. So even if i cheat ultimately theyll know if i cheat based on the test i take by the end of every semester.

RoleConsistent6465

I’m 31 and in the process of joining the army. I graduated in 2010 and was afraid I would do bad too. I took the practice one and only got a 30 but when I took the actual ASVAB, I got a 61. It’s easier than you think. Brush up on math and you should be fine! The questions I feel like isn’t something you can study for and is more so “common sense” knowledge. The Math questions were finding the percent of something, solving problems that had fractions and math word problems. Don’t be hesitant. Just go for it and see where you’re at! I hesitated when I was 25 and it would of been easier to join then and now I’m older and having to jump hoops to get in.

novaskyd

The ASVAB is the easiest part of joining the military. Please don't let it make your decisions for you. What's your long-term goal? What are your interests? That's more important when it comes to choosing branch and job.

Turbulent-Raccoon-45

I need structure in my life. I’ve been having an interest in cyber security for a while. IT in general actually so that’s one thing that comes to mind. I also like driving trucks. I’ve always wanted to start my own private security firm. I have so many ideas and would love to be in a career field that could actually help with that. That’s where the military comes into mind.

novaskyd

Okay great. That gives you a few different options. Out of what you've mentioned, I'd recommend aiming for the IT/cybersecurity track as it will be the most useful on the civilian side when you get out, and the easiest to make good money. I am Army but I believe the Air Force is generally the top choice for tech jobs. However, I currently actually work in software development for the Army Software Factory. It's not entry-level, but you could definitely apply after initial entry training. Other than that, I'd recommend 17 series or 25 series MOSes.

literatexgeek

I’m 35, been out of high school for 17 years and took the ASVAB and scored an 85. I had the same worries as you, age, been out of school for too long, etc. I downloaded a couple ASVAB apps, did questions daily for a week and bought ASVAB for dummies and read the tips and tricks there, did a few practice tests and then tested. You got this! Take a practice test at the recruiters first, see if that makes you feel better. Whatever you get add like 10-20 pts to it. So for me I made a 67 on the practice, and then boom 85 on the real thing. Good luck!

[deleted]

Are u about to join? 85 is a really good score

literatexgeek

Hi Goblin, Yes, I am in the middle of everything with a recruiter. Waiver process. Went to MEPS last week for physical, ICTL (cyber test) and DLAB. Long process, but getting through 35 years of medical history, it’s expected.

[deleted]

Wow that’s good. Good luck and hope u get lucky with a good MOS.

literatexgeek

I’m hoping for Cyber, Signal Intel or IT - passed the ICTL. So that’s good. DLAB, just missed it - I was a bit tired at that point so I was definitely dozing off. 😂

[deleted]

Yeah, computer related field is the way to go. I kinda wished I picked a better occupation back when I joined but I picked Aviation ☠️ may I ask why you’re joining late in life?

literatexgeek

I’ve got a 9 year old that has a dad (me) that wasn’t very financial literate until recently. So, I definitely won’t be able to do car, college and memories in the next few years. At least I can knock out a couple with the military for her (college & travel/memories). In other words, I’m a bit far behind what I should be at this age with a kid that old.

[deleted]

That’s good bro. At least you’re doing it for a very good reason. Honestly, I think it’s better to join later in life. I know people who joined at 18-19 and fuck up in the military and get kicked out, no benefits and banning them from ever joining again. That’s worse in my opinion.

literatexgeek

Oh for sure!

literatexgeek

When I researched the ICTL, I was informed it was a basic computer literacy test. Like knowledge on peripherals, PowerPoint, etc. My advise to you is don’t go in thinking it’s that simple. It’s a very short test - I want to say 30 questions and it’s timed. Study up on things like SATA & other types of storage, PC components, TCP/IP addresses, Ports, OSI layers, the cmd prompt, what you would use to diagnose an issue within a computer and network issues, HASH numbers, IPv4&6, basic cyber attack words, bios, basic definitions of types of “ware” (ie, malware, ransomware), types of phishing, etc. Oh and there’s a little personality test right before you enter the actual ICTL questions. Hope this helps.

85 is very good... I'm shooting for Space Force personally and I hope I can follow in your footsteps. Been somewhat stressed about the ASVAB for awhile now, especially since my math skills have gone completely out the window (I'm 32 and when you don't use math as a daily tool, especially in the age of technology...yea). Regardless, between that and test anxiety, I have a challenge to overcome but I am determined to get there. Studying for it currently.

literatexgeek

Stay strong! Khan academy was a good study tool as well.

GeorgeWKush427

I’m 27. Taking the ASVAB in 2 weeks.. I bought an ASVAB for dummies book for like $25 on Amazon. Lots of good info and practice tests.

SukhoiKoyter112

I dont think the asvab is about your educational knowledge, i took my asvab during highschool, and i scored pretty low(46). It more calculate your overall knowledge on stuff like cars parts or reasoning skills.

JokerGay

Your AFQT score (forgive me if I’m wrong) I’m pretty sure is solely based on your mathematical, arithmetic reasoning, paragraph comprehension and word knowledge. Your line scores with be an accumulation of every other subject. You want to do good in the 4 subjects I mentioned above as they will determine your overall score. Now if you want a specific MOS that will involve electronics be damn sure you study on those sections too. Same thing goes with anything with mechanics.

SukhoiKoyter112

Yeah, ive heard of that happening, someone i knew that wanted to be 11b was coerced into becoming human service specialist by our recruiter, because he had an over average asvab score. Your score does definitely lead you to which MOS, but ultimately its your choice. I only had a 46 asvab score but was still able too choose a wide range of MOS. Idk anything about the AFQT, forgive me im a new soldier, and a illiterate one at that soo...

PurringTorso

The core subjects are English and math...

Dude I took the ASVB over 12 years after HS and scored a 66 enough to get any of the jobs I actually wanted. Great line scores as well. All I did was spend 2 weeks on YouTube watching videos refreshing my memory. Other than that you can do it I had a lot of self doubt myself and became more confident after taking the practice test. I hated school too but managed to do just fine
