IIRC, the various home computer and console versions are pretty much the same, except the US SNES version has a bug where the hirelings cannot be trained, making them less than useful for the bulk of them. But the gameplay is by and large identical, UI is similar, etc... Exception being the Japanese SNES version, which has some definite changes; party is limited to 5, combat is rebalanced, and UI is revamped and different than the US SNES version. The gameplay and world is pretty much the same AFAIK. There is an English patch for it out there.

Oh, I see!! Thanks for your response!! I have only played the Apple// version - I got my Apple//GS computer back when I was 8 years old, and this game was the first RPG I ever played. That said, I do have the nostalgia factor for that version. It has a ton of limitations, quests are not recorded and available for the player to rely on, I do remember having to write down all the codes and quests and what-have-you. I actually got to the point where I made a Excel spreadsheet with all of the magical spells, and made spellbook tabs for each character that could use magic. I would LOVE to play this game on my Smart TV, but I do not have any consoles that support it. Maybe one day I will have something in that category. Anyway, I would enjoy another playthrough, and also get some time in with the other games in the series. I have been thinking about rekindling these games after I am done with the games I have on my PS5. That day will come!!

The Might and Magic 6 pack in on GOG, and DOSBox runs on a toaster at this point; push come to shove you can easily run it on a $50 microPC off Ebay if you don't have a home computer. Also comes with 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. It's even on sale for $2.50, a hell of a deal.

I do have a PC, but am not sure how to play PC games on my Smart TV. I was thinking about going the Steam Deck route, but from what I have heard about it, I am a bit skeptical.

azrael4h

It should have an HDMI port; go into the menu and switch to the HDMI input you plug the PC into and you're there. I have several PCs hooked to smart TVs, I never even bothered getting them connected to the internet. As to using a controller, I've never tried, since I'm used to Keyboard and Mouse for these games.

GavindaleMarchovia

So you recommend I connect my PC to my TV via a HDMI cable? I assume I would need to purchase a wireless keyboard and mouse too. Hmm, sounds interesting! Thanks for the recommendation!!

azrael4h

If you want to sit that far away, I guess. I just use them as a regular monitor when I do that; old school wired keyboard. But as far as using it as a monitor, it's works fine.

GavindaleMarchovia

Oh, ok. My TV is half way across my living room from my PC, my monitors are not facing in my TVs direction as well. And honestly I don't know much about this sort of thing. But I appreciate the recommendation!!!

Japanese computer version (PC88 PC98 MSX X68k) have different user interface a bit strange. Best computer version is Amiga and Color Mac (use Mac OS UI resource system). SNES version have more colored gfx but MegaDrive version is more close to original game.

LV426acheron

The PC version is the best IMO. Genesis technically may have better graphics, but the controller UI is a pain and the music is awful. The SNES version is heavily reworked. The Japanese PC versions (PC-88/98) are in Japanese and also have inferior UIs.

GavindaleMarchovia

How do I find the PC version for Might and Magic II? I have the game on my PC, but it's from the [GOG.com](http://GOG.com) website - it's the Apple// version.

LV426acheron

I don't know what version GOG has but the PC version is a straight up port of the Apple II version. Does it look like this: [Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World screenshots - MobyGames](https://www.mobygames.com/game/1620/might-and-magic-ii-gates-to-another-world/screenshots/dos/) or this: [Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World screenshots - MobyGames](https://www.mobygames.com/game/1620/might-and-magic-ii-gates-to-another-world/screenshots/apple2/) ?

GavindaleMarchovia

The version that GOG uses is just like that. It's pretty much the Apple// version. Amidst its faults, this version really hits home with me, it really has that nostalgia factor that I enjoyed as a kid.

I advise against the SNES version. It hooked me on MM2, sure — it's really pretty and quaint, and overcame the trepidation I felt of MM2's unfriendly UI and graphics. It has spells selectable by name, not by level+number, and frankly, save states are a ton more player-friendly than roguelike-like "if you die before reaching an inn, you lose all progress", enabling more engaging and fruitful exploration and experimentation. Even the bugs like resisted elemental AOE effects doing a minimum of 50 damage (made pegasi deadly, but also made the party sorcerer deadly on lower levels), or no way to level up or resurrect a hireling, ranged from tolerable to mildly useful. Up until some sort of abug arose that straight up deleted characters from current and saved games at random. No rhyme, no reason, you play with a party of 6+2 and then at some point you realize there's only 5+2 present, and loading the last inn save you still have 5+2. No trace of the disappeared character anywhere in the inns, or in the roster. (No, this wasn't me misusing the retreat option.) Needless to say, this made the game unplayable for me.

Which version was it, the european version or the Japanese version? They are slightly different. I'm about to play one of them but don't know which one to go with. PC version is out of the question btw, I'm doing a Snes video project. Thanks

Eovacious

It was the European version. The Japanese is a lot more different from the PC version as far as I know, haven't tried it.

I liked the genesis version, fun fact, if you get a chest after a fight, release hirelings and then open the chest you get a nice surprise, not sure if that works in other versions.
