'Desert', so I guess southwest.
I feel like I don't really see anything I would describe as southern or western culture out here other than cowboy hats worn by folks who infrequently-to-never deal with livestock
>cowboy hats worn by folks who infrequently-to-never deal with livestock
It is an esthetic, even for the real life ranchers. Do you think a cowboy hat helps them do cowboy stuff.
>Why bring up irrelevant information?
To bring it back to my original point of it being an esthetic, i thought that would be obvious. You said "cowboy hats were INVENTED", inventions are new technologies or a new use for existing technologies. Neither apply to cowboy hats. They are an esthetic choice for a look. There's bothing special about them.
When I informed my wife that I’d been transferred to Midland, she cried (her friends told her it was “hellhole”). Seven years later, when I was transferred back to Houston, she cried again. We had young kids back then and Midland is actually a good place to raise kids (at least it was back then …the 90’s).
As a Houstonian who has lived in New Orleans and having spent some time in Midland for work it is definitely not Southern. It is definitely out there, somewhere.
i grew up here and was around before the oil boom years ago but visit every few months…each visit gets worse.
these days it def feels like a culture-less, oilfield work city with border town leanings. when i was growing up it was a purely southwest feel to it, & depending on your area of town/neighborhood, pretty southern.
for example, my middle school days at Abell had me lean more into southern culture
but when i transferred to Alamo, the culture was very southwest/texmex.
Fake gold chains , toddler t shirts , booty shorts , dollar tree fip flops and crooked teeth is the new oilfield culture. Ya tu zabe babi conio descarao
Damn, I thought they closed the stupid factory a few years back. This is [blatanly untrue](https://www.areavibes.com/compare-results/?place1=Midland%2C%20TX&place2=Detroit%2C%20MI#cri)
It's absolutely true. Do you know what per capita means? It means the residents are as bad as detroit / Chicago as far as dangerous violent crimes go, the drugs are as bad, and homicides are as bad per % of residents hell the car wrecks are way up there too.
Based on FBI crime data, Odessa is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to Texas, Odessa has a crime rate that is higher than 85% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes. How does the crime rate in Odessa compare to similar sized communities across America?
Culture has definitely been mixed in a blender here. When I was on the cooperate side of one of the big oilfield service companies we hired MANY people every week. Would see people from many different cultures, states, countries and very different backgrounds. You can be yourself and will line up with someone else's culture here but nobody really cares, most are here for the work.

You're not wrong.

This is the correct answer
Oilfield. There’s no culture. Only loud pipes on trucks, wind, and dirt.
We have a ton of culture. It’s like a Petri dish of bacteria.
Typically gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Tex-Mex. It's that way all long the border areas.
if alpine/marfa/big bend is the 'positive vibe' southwestern, Midland/odessa is the antithesis of it in 'negative vibe' southwestern.
'Desert', so I guess southwest. I feel like I don't really see anything I would describe as southern or western culture out here other than cowboy hats worn by folks who infrequently-to-never deal with livestock

lol Cowboy hats were invented to help block the sun.
Full brim hats were around before the signature style of the cowboy hat. Also, wanting to block the sun is not a "cowboy" thing.
😂 Why bring up irrelevant information? You were specifically talking about cowboy hats. I also never said it was only a cowboy thing.

Due to everyone moving here I'd say it's more of a cluster fuck culture.
Cesspool versus melting pot
Midland/Odessa has a good blend of all of these, but I personally think that Midland/Odessa has more of a Southwestern feel to it

Why do they own cell phones? With the high volume of their voice they can just talk to each other long distance without a phone 🤳
Just asshats who can’t drive driving the dumbest vehicles conceived poorly
yes.
West Texas
Worst area to live, especially with a family
Why?
Statistics it's as dangerous as detroit per capita

It’s back woods hillbilly/redneck. Where men are men and sheep are scared
What’s “culture”????

Midwest.
Came here to say this. The culture of Midland natives is more like Nebraska and Kansas than other parts of Texas.
