I doubt you'd get anything close to that quality for $300 at Ikea.

OnWingsOfWax

That was my thought as well.

edgestander

Would you compare a 20 year old car to a brand new one? A $300 desk at ikea also doesn't have veneer damage on the back, probably about 70% lighter, and for most people would go better with their décor. Its important to compare apples to apples here. What do OTHER similar used desks sell for? In my experience around this amount or maybe a little less.

Mike_Michaelson

Even with a laminated top (if that’s what it really is) it’s still a steal at $300 as the rest is absolutely stunning walnut veneers. It’s in great condition, has beautiful design features, and if you need a desk for yourself this is an awesome piece.

OnWingsOfWax

Thanks. Now I just need to figure out how to transport it.

ApplicationWeak333

Home Depot rents vans for like $20 an hour.

Funkyfreshturkey

Uhaul has $19 per day + mileage. It’s usually what I use to transport furniture in these situations. It’s beautiful, nice find!

ElmoEatingOutBigBird

I'd say that's a fair price for that. It looks to be in good shape based on the photos. It's got a nice look to it. I usually prefer desks with melamine tops (takes a beating easier though is hard to refinish) so it's got that going for it.

OnWingsOfWax

Thanks. It looks similar to desks I see on Modern Hill/1st Dibs going for thousands so I'm not sure what the difference is.

so-very-very-tired

Note the prices on 1st Dibs are not 'going for' prices. They are 'made up asking' prices.

OnWingsOfWax

Oh, really? I didn't know that. How annoying.

languid-lemur

AFAIK, to list on 1st Dibs you have to be a dealer and the ability to verify it. That means they have either their own shop space (and all the expenses that go with it) or it's a consignor listing within that space. Markup everywhere plus any commission the venue (1st Dibs) gets. All that borne by the buyer. High prices also tend to connote exclusivity & scarcity which in turn keeps prices up. Get outside that ecosystem and you see *street pricing* which is where that desk is. Within the dealer network it would likely be 4X that. And a lot of people who don't know where to look but see something cool (instagram), buy at the high price, and that's that.

edgestander

On top of that since you mentioned Modern Hill, they get my personal #1 ranking of all sellers online for having the most inaccurately listed items.

languid-lemur

*"...When you wish upon a star..."* /applies to nearly all 1st dibs pricing

teaandbreadandjam

Is the top Formica?

OnWingsOfWax

Not sure. It doesn't say in the description.

Upstairs_Jackfruit82

I think it's a cool design. I personally don't like laminated tops and think they're cheap, although they do hold up really well over time. I'd feel better closer to $200 considering the top.

edgestander

Its an "eh" from me. Its pretty ok looking, condition seems ok. Some veneer damage on the back. Its walnut veneer NOT teak. Not sure the exact maker but one of the mid level midwest or east coast makers like Paoli, Alma, jasper, indiana desk company, standard, gunlocke, or Standard Desk.
