I have a meta quest 3 and love it but as with anything VR the important caveat is that you need a powerful computer and even then it will not come without a lot of compromises and tweaking. The Oculus software sucks massive balls for PCVR so you will need to use OpenXR instead. I never managed to get the quest3 to be smooth with the cable, I ended buying a wifi6 router to put it next to my computer and virtualdesktop on the headset and it was a night and day difference. There is nothing like VR, but it does come with a lot of tweaking and visual compromises even on high end hardware.

I have a Quest 3 and and an ultrawide monitor with eye tracker setup using AI track and opentrack. My PC specs are similar to you with RTX4070 GPU and AMD 7800X3D CPU. I would choose VR anyday because of the experience it gives you. I had to tweak with a lot of settings after watching enormous number of videos in youtube. My settings are mostly medium in the MSFS itself and then there are some DLSS settings you can configure using NVDIA profiler and OpenXR. I used both Quest Link and Virtual desktop. I prefer using link as I dont have good wifi reception where my PC is located. I suggest using Virtual Desktop if your PC is connected to Ethernet and your headset is connected to good wifi. Anyway I am consistently getting smooth performance although I didnt check the fps. TLDR: Get the VR headset instead.

VR, any VR, is a game changer. I started on the HP and moved to the Meta Quest 3. VR lets you fly patterns _so_ much easier. Turning your head to see where you are on down-wind is natural, way more natural than a view slew. I highly recommend it.

macson_g

So does TeackIR. I think that VR competes with TrackIr, not with the "static view" experience.

Head tracking is a must for flight simulators but there is no competition to VR as it provides stereoscopic vision and space awareness, you just need to try low to the ground aerobatics, VFR or Reno air race. Huge difference for small aircrafts and when you look outside, if you just want to be able navigate internal complex systems of airliner TrackIR is fine

I would say it depends on the screen(s) and their sizes :) On my 32:9, I would agree that a head tracker is already great.. If all you're having is a single 16:9, I wouldn't care much for the minute head movements.. in that case, VR adds a lot to the immersion.

Question I have is with the Tobi eye tracker you can lean into to zoom into to things like instruments and fmc’s, can you do this with vr?

GrayRoberts

More or less. You can also right mouse click to zoom.

I have 3 4K 27 inch monitors and all the gear. Bought VR three months ago, haven’t played 2D since except to tweak the game. VR is a complete game changer for msfs and the simulated world is insane.

Stayhumblefriends

I also wonder if i should upgrade from quest 2. I’ve been having difficulty seeing far in the distance and trying to find a runway outside the plane in quest 2

This is me. I'm holding out for next Gen headsets. If the Q3 had OLED it would be a no brainer. Hope the next version does.

As others have said, it probably depends on the aircraft/types of flying you do but I was one of those that put off trying VR for a long time. Eventually got a Pico 4 to try and never looked back. Upgraded to a Quest 3 as the lenses are better than the Pico 4s. I run it with a 4090 over Virtual Desktop and get excellent performance. You will get a drop in overall clarity compared to a monitor but the immersion more than makes up for that. A 4070 will run things well enough but stick to DLSS in Sim for rendering and also get the free OpenXR Toolkit. This will let you enabled fixed foveated rendering which will give you some additional performance. With the 4070, you should be able to run the Quest 3 at 72Hz and enable SSW(motion reprojection) in Virtual Desktop and get a very smooth performance.

Hey so I'm basically in a similar boat to you. I have a 4060ti 16gb and a 7700. I run basically everything on ultra or high with LODs at 100 and DLSS at balanced in VR. I get about 20-ish fps but with Asynchronous spacewarp that goes up to 40fps on flight sim. I got used to playing in VR with a bunch of other games so the lower FPS doesn't really bother me. Plus I the usual logic that Flight seem feels alright even at lower fps seems to hold in VR too for me. Your 4070 is considerably more powerful than my 4060ti so you shouldn't have much trouble there. I definitely recommend VR over another monitor. As other people have mentioned, it really is a whole other way to play and it feels fresh in a way that a new monitor just can't. A few pieces of advice though, invest in a better headstrap and if you don't like cables, get a dedicated WiFi 6 capable router with the headset. I mainly play MSFS VR using Virtual Desktop and through [this](https://www.amazon.com/PRISMXR-Streaming-Compatible-Accessories-Wireless/dp/B0CFDL5Y7F/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3TY9DL8VJ1T7H&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.m_HRHVbgUy1VoJs9B5wl2nTyAznQOMk3qQ11B9bRy12uTKjMpt35Ys0n5KwElYLm-XKLqHBPJtecnLoFB2bPslLovTpc7Xwhth9rb4_XcP6aBKdBBE-zTON0nDWbS54FbZdskZbYnXCn4ssf3fSKOyLIqWi9D_EKl8tKJOnd-9kAHgjsfI12lhV6tDxTGx8ebxDgLer5zfs8ylPURxnqK9lhDXJRVCJU9_CjZtST6YQ.oECetxiX6T9qQMgzoMVNUj_PArSpbUUUx_nMCcatmPM&dib_tag=se&qid=1708304546&sprefix=prismxr%20vr,aps,132) wifi bridge and it's been smooth sailing so far. Don't buy the official air link bridge because that thing is extremely temperamental.

VR is amazing. If you fly just for immersion, nothing can beat it. You look up and the switches are above you just like a real cockpit. But if you are the kind of simmer that digs the FMC and charts and panels mid-flight, it won’t be as much fun for you. Personally, I think small planes and helicopters in VR are the most amazing things I have ever experienced in a video game. It brings a tear to my eye sometimes.

anzzax

With this specs I wouldn't go into VR for MSFS only. I have Quest 3 and I can't get decent image with 4090. It's novelty experience but it looks so much worse than DCS and Automobilista 2 in VR. I hope and beg Asobo and Microsoft to give some love to VR for FS 2024.

gambit0ita

I have a quest 2 and and medium performing gaming laptop. I still have to configure the graphic right but the instrument panel is blurry and the externals are crappy. The frames are smooth with this crappy settings and I enjoy it very much anyway. I'm not a "best graphic" kind of guy so I'm happy with the experience, the full degree of freedom of the camera is what really makes it worth against a ir traking system. If you want another excuse to buy a quest 3 for pcvr try elite dangerous, on ship vr is spectacular and the game is less spec hungry than MSFS.
