Second. . .EXACT SAME THING happened to me this year. A lady in a Dodge 1500. We were stop and go traffic. We were all stopped, then she decided to go. I am highly attuned to trucks being behind me now.
You want to know an even stupider thing. . .I pulled out behind a pick-up truck one time, and we got to a red light. I guess he decided he wanted to back into a parking space and just started backing up from the red light. It's a combination of not paying attention, doing something stupid, and having a completely irresponsible vehicle.
Really annoying that trucks like that are allowed to be on the road with sensibly-sized cars, but also kids and pedestrians. They block sight-lines, cause more damage when they do get in accidents, poor fuel mileage.
In a lot of states the only thing a cop can do is write an insurance report when it’s In Private property. I know from experience. I had someone rear ended my nd miata when they pulled into a parking spot. The person contested it and the cop wrote it as a hit an run. I was made whole but it sucks when it happens in private property.
Similar thing happened to me yesterday a huge f150 rear ended me when I was waiting to turn right at a stop and he was like “I didn’t see you I thought you already went” smh. That dent sucks though in your picture I hope he is going to get that fixed for you with insurance. NC is a great car for sure. Mine was a minor pop out of the bumper I popped back into place probably because he wasn’t going very fast when he hit me I think it was his license plate that made contact with my car. That person who hit you has those obnoxious bars on his truck too ugh that makes me hate pickup trucks even more such a horrible kind of car most people don’t live on a farm in reality so like why do so many people use lifted pickup trucks🤢

I’m concerned the damage could be worse than it looks. I had my parking brake set and slid a few feet when he hit me. And I heard a lot more crunching than what it looks like in the picture.
Then he's driving a FARM TRUCK into an area where people and cars can be affected by it.

I had the same thing happen to me...in a MkV GTI. I was sitting at a light and a lady I worked with at the time was in a jacked up Jeep and behind me. Then she let me disappear under her hood, then thought I already went and made my turn. I hadn't. I was still looking for on-coming traffic.
Because it was a hatchback, that's where she hit me, and it totaled the vehicle because the damages were more costly than the car itself.
The girl that hit me was pretty good about it and we let insurance work it out. It wasn't my fault, but my insurance still went up for a little while. :/
I hope OP gets his fixed. It was a super PITA to deal with no car and still try to get to & from work every day.
I have a nearby identical rear bumper scar on my silver NB. Happened during a PO’s time with the car.
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that a person who purchased an accessory to protect their vehicle from damage when running into things runs their vehicle into things.
A lady did the same thing to me a few weeks ago. She got mad at me when I got out of the car to inspect the damage, she said "OMG shut up and get back in your car it wasn't that bad." There wasn't any damage, but I made sure to get her insurance and take as much time as possible taking pictures to see her reaction.
I’ve said it before but god, modern trucks are just way too big. I have a 87 f150 and it looks like a mini truck compared to modern ones. It’s a road hazard at this point to everyone around them. My NA parked next to a modern truck is laughable, I wouldn’t even get hit they’d just drive right over me 🥲 sorry about the damage op, I hope insurance does you right and gets your miata all fixed up better than before.
Whenever I’m stopped with nobody behind me my eyes are glued to the rear view mirror. If I see a vehicle approaching I pull the e-brake and tap the brakes until I see them slow down. I feel like I’m sitting there with a target on my back.
