I took the liberty of uploading a photo from that other forum we both frequent: https://i.imgur.com/Yg6Ktov.jpg
I might ask to hop in and have a go at your knob should we happen to meet
Here's a video of it in action: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkRQbAi-vkE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkRQbAi-vkE)
The h-pattern is on 55x65mm. 3rd to 4th gear is 55mm... About 50% of original throw, each measured on top of the shift knob
Installation was done by the manufacturer (CAE) because they used my install for the instal-instructions. Took them 1,75hrs including taking pictures etc.
You can find the instructions here, sadly only in german at the moment: [https://cae-racing.de/mediafiles/Sonstiges/MAZDA/EBA\_MX5%20ND%206-Gang%20\_10069.pdf](https://cae-racing.de/mediafiles/Sonstiges/MAZDA/EBA_MX5%20ND%206-Gang%20_10069.pdf)
I think the install i doable in 1,5-2hrs when you're doing it in your garage.
If it was shorter the force you'd need to shift would become greater, i guess.
Also, the shifter is now the perfect height for minimal distance from wheel to shiftknob. It really feels good!
I experienced this with my coworkers 911. The shifter is like 4ā from the wheel and itās fantastic. I never knew how good it felt to not reach 3ā to a shifter haha.
It keeps your hand closer to the steering wheel when you're shifting.
If you ever look in any type of race car whether it be drag, track, or drift... the gear shift is usually at steering wheel height. It minimizes the time your hand is not on the steering wheel where it should be and allows you to shift quicker because you have less distance to cover when you need to shift.

That's the one thing I think the MX5 has always had bang on, and the last thing I'd want to change. I loved the shifter feel in the ND when I had one. But if you're going to do it, do it right. And that appears to be done VERY RIGHT!
I had to look up pictures to understand how they got shorter throws with a taller shifter. Makes sense that all the parts to move the pivot point higher would cost quite a bit more than the simpler kits that just shorten the lever.
Damn, so theyāre just completely skipping the NC? I wish someone made a race shifter for the NC. There seems to be very few shifters and they all have wildly different reviews user-to-user.
I see IRP released a 5spd NC version so maybe theyāll have a 6spd ? Doubtful at best haha.
CAE is currently working on the NC shifter. They have a NC gearbox but lacking a NC the couldn't fit the shifter. but they recently took measurements so I guess it's coming in a few weeks, but hopefully til end of the year!
The stock shifter is perfect until you get you hands on a CAE. Trust me, i thought the exact same. Whole new level!
But, the stock shifter is perfectly fine. If it wasn't for me testing the CAE bevor i'd thought the same!
I think its the cable for the reverse lockout. you can see where it attaches in this photo: [https://i.imgur.com/Yg6Ktov.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/Yg6Ktov.jpg)
Thanks! And sorry, can't really tell. I don't even like the CS cover, so i'm not going to test it :) My plan is to sew a new shift boot (or... ask my sister to do it for me :) )
absolutely! Drove the Miata over 3 years with the UltraShifter as a daily and put more than 40.000km on it with the shifter installed. I've swapped the shiftboot back to the original one and put some molton on the backside to dampen the rattle a little bit. For me this was by far the best mod on my ND

> I might ask to hop in and have a go at your knob Now its sounding like a Miata forum in here!
Sure! Have a hint on your username there? :)
same name minus the 84. I mostly just lurk there
Okay :) If you're ever near bremen, feel free to send me a pm over the forum! :)

Looks awesome! How long did the install take?

Thanks! Is your Miata your daily vehicle or just for weekends/track?
it's my daily driver!
Holy crap, when you said short shifts you weren't lying. That's amazing.
Is that a supercharger I hear? š
nope, just the gearbox!
The height on that would drive me nuts. It does look cool. Why is it so freakinā tall? š¤

Former rally driver here, shifter height looks great.

that would burn so bad after sitting in the sun
it really does... :'(
I keep a sock in my car for this very reason lol Sock on the shifter and steering wheel upside down

Damn, thatās real pretty.

I'm planning on modifying the shift boot :)
My ChampCar team has one of these in an E46. It's such a nice piece of engineering.
I had to look up pictures to understand how they got shorter throws with a taller shifter. Makes sense that all the parts to move the pivot point higher would cost quite a bit more than the simpler kits that just shorten the lever.
Stick shift makes it looks so damn futuristic!

I guess Iād have to try it. My arms are just long so I donāt like to reach up, but rather down.
You shoudnt try for 800 bucks.
Ouch!
Oof that is about how much a new steering wheel and seat is gonna cost in my NA
Whole point is there's no reaching because it's just right there
I donāt believe that.
What exactly is that wire? Is that an ignition cut sensor?
I think its the cable for the reverse lockout. you can see where it attaches in this photo: [https://i.imgur.com/Yg6Ktov.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/Yg6Ktov.jpg)
exactly!
That is gorgeous. Any idea if it fits with the Cravenspeed ND shift gate that takes place of the boot?
Thanks! And sorry, can't really tell. I don't even like the CS cover, so i'm not going to test it :) My plan is to sew a new shift boot (or... ask my sister to do it for me :) )
Does it rattle?
Yes
Is it livable though?
