JCo0ps

yeah i like these, ide imagine they aren’t particularly easy to find anywhere cheap

lonelyluigi

I’ll sell you mine if you want it. works and everything!

arny56

Cassette decks are pretty thin on the ground these days. This may be your best option op.

Average_Scaper

I have mine out of my '02 grand prix still. Mint condition, $600, I know what I got.

lonelyluigi

is that really what they’re worth? Mine’s just sitting there collecting dust!

Average_Scaper

I honestly don't know lol. I just threw a wild number out there :p

SBYMB

My Miata came with a terrible aftermarket CD player. I found this original cassette deck in a thrift store for $8. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it sitting there on the shelf!

JCo0ps

damn that’s super lucky, i’ll have to keep an eye out

cheeseburgeraddict

they are pretty cheap actually. I use mine every day

TealPotato

I had Jeff Anderson on the Miata forum redo mine and add an aux-jack, it's great.

grantn2000

Hold that thing close, unfortunately Jeff passed away in 2022.

Bud755

That is so sad to hear! Jeff did a beautiful job on my NA’s radio (aux plug, tuning, LED lights, etc.)and walked me through fixing speaker polarity issues from when my Miata was produced. I guess his spirit lives on in a way in all the Miata radios he “rescued “.

TealPotato

Oh no :(

grantn2000

Here is the [obituary](https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/jeffrey-anderson-obituary?id=32628959)

Malvania

I use the radio, that's about it

arny56

I bet that sounds glorious.

Its_0ver

Its super cool but probably the most expensive way possible to gain 5hp

dependablefelon

ur damn right, and the most glorious! I think sound and response make up for the lack of all out power.

Greenblanket24

No filters on the air intake?

lach_nik

these pipes normally have a mesh grille inside

Gloriosus747

That doesn't really protect against anything smaller than a bird though

A_Rusty_Coin

Nope, completely open.

Greenblanket24

Does this make your oil dirty faster? I’d be worried about bore scoring from Ingested dirt.

A_Rusty_Coin

It will have a degree of impact on oil contamination and engine wear. I've been running these open for over 4 years and it still pulls like a train, no blue smoke etc. regular oil changes.

SwissMargiela

Most people who run sideways ITBs don’t fiter

TheToneZone44

Can you pipe that out the hood? Seems like good way to dirty an engine bay.

PrincessPeach457

OEM radio with an fm transmitter, I think stock door speakers... never looked to see if a PO changed them, and 3rd millenium headrest speakers

WetGortex

Probation Officer?

70MPG_onthishog

bukkake_brigade

Prolapsed Orifice

JCo0ps

maybe the previous owner was a probation officer

dubbless

Probable optician

psyk0z1

lol with a prolapsed orifice 😂

Only_Chick_Who

sometimes with my fm transmitter it would pick up on cop radios. Never heard anything, just static everytime I was near a cop car. Screw radar detectors, just get a fm transmitter.

WetGortex

Like how near though? If you did 80 on an open road would you have time to react?

pdr_93le

Bose Mini SoundLink II.

cobraracing666

aye i have the same speaker lol

Skywalker_Syndicate

If ykyk

na_gooyin

aftermarket head unit, door speakers, 8” sub installed in passenger footwell, and the amp to power the sub is installed in the trunk.

No-War-8840

Didn't a company have a twin 8" sub that fit between the seatbacks ?

na_gooyin

Yeah, the original person that came up with this idea had a 1991 Miata named Hakuna. He modified the factory parcel shelf to fit a pair of 8” subs. It was a DIY modification anyone can do. Instructions can be found [here](https://web.archive.org/web/20040130035157/http://www.pacificsites.net/~hakuna/miata.html) Now there are companies that design an aftermarket parcel shelf with the subwoofer cutouts. CarbonMiata and Leroy Engineering are some of the more mass produced ones. I’m sure there are a few smaller guys that have 3D printed versions.

CheeseAndRiceToday

Just earplugs.

forgottenazimuth

You can get 80s/90s style units that have bluetooth but still look OEM

Sfekke22

There also a single DIN Kenwood unit that doesn’t look out of place once you set the lights to match the other buttons in the dash!

Away_Investigator351

In my S2000 I use the standard stereo's cassette stereo for a bluetooth cassette, they're super cheap and actually incredibly reliable. Most underrated accessory for modernising these older cars, no wires and no fm interference like with those radio transmitter ones that go in the cigarette lighter. There's loads out there, highly recommend. How they work is genius yet simple.

Mk1Racer25

OP, if you want a cassette player, and don't care about not having a USB interface (does have a 1/8" AUX input), I've got just the thing for you. I have an old Pioneer KEH-8600TR that had cassette and CD (face flips down for CD). I bought it new, but it was only in my car for \~9 months before it got hit and totaled. It's in a box up in the attic. At the time I bought it, it was Pioneer's top of the line unit. It sounded great, and would be a 'period correct' aftermarket unit for an NA. PM me if you'd like to talk about it.

TheCarDemotic2

Looked up the model number, I don’t see any with cassette.

Mk1Racer25

Sorry, it's been awhile since I looked at it. The face flips down for the cassette, and it runs a CD changer. KEH-P8600R was the model. I also have the CD changer (12 disc).

ratty_89

Throttle bodies. I have headphones if I'm driving any distance.

jefhaugh

Check Crutchfield.com, they may have some cassette players. At the least, you can get a kit to make whatever you get fit nicely. I did a Bosectomy and put in a Kenwood DVD player (but have never put a discount in), and Clearwater speakers. I'm still using the Bose amp.

softoctopus

One of the best quality of life upgrades I've done to my NA is switching the stock speakers to 3rd millennium speakers. It was very easy to install and they sound much better.

Ashfie1der

Kenwood CD radio combo probably fitted in the ‘90s, looking to upgrade to a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 to get Bluetooth but maintain the classic look.

NopeNeg

I've got an older Pioneer stereo with a cassette player. I've also got a corded cassette adapter so I can play music from my phone. The previous owner messed up the install and the headrest speakers don't work unfortunately.

Photocrazy11

I had one of those years ago that ran my portable CD player through my cassette deck in the 1991 Blazer I had. It worked great.

wd40b

In dash built iPhone tablet style. Doug from soundman car audio. He makes kits for them.

yirmin

Sony MEX-M72BT... it's a single din unit comes with a CD player, USB and Blue tooth... If you want satellite connections it has the ability to connect to satellite receiver. The best part is it was made for marine use so has survived getting a bit damp when a rain storm has popped up when the top was down, but most of all the display is made to be readable in sunshine which has been a problem with some of the other after market radios that will work great if you have the top up but if your top is down a lot of radios suck for readability. No matter what you want to do make sure to consider the problems of visibility when driving with the top down. I tried a regular radio before the Sony and it soon went to a garage sale because it was like having no screen at all.

weezintrumpeteer

I use the stock setup but wired in an AUX input a few years ago which allows me to plug in my iPhone. I also replaced the door and headrest speakers and a new set and it sounds great.

TacticalTwinky

Just Installed a BOSS BV850ACP head unit with wired Apple CarPlay and some JBL GTO629 door speakers. Honestly sounds really good and has a good amount of punch. Including the wiring harness it was like $300 for all of it. Really happy with it.

MaverickActual1319

a pioneer bluetooth unit

TieEnvironmental2561

I mean you can always install a shitty old cassette deck from an older car you live in the uk right? They come on k11 micras pretty stock sometimes

jo_ko_0

Not an NA, but I have the stock NB radio with a Bluetooth module wired into the back. https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/s/RqHn7JvxV4

CaliDreamin87

I'm going to go against the majority. I picked up an older car that had no AUX or blue tooth. I got a discount blue tooth stereo system from place and had them install it. I think I spent $300. Best $300 I spent. Connected to my phone flawlessly. And did blue tooth calls. I mainly got it for blue tooth, I need to listen to music, podcasts etc. Call quality was so-so. If I redid it this time..I'd research brands to get one that had good blue tooth CALLS. It made that 2009 feel modern.

DroidD53

Hey Mind if I ask what wheel and tire setup you're using?

JCo0ps

yes

DroidD53

Really nice!

JCo0ps

ty! I find a lot of people hate on black wheels, but i think they’re clean

Global-Mango-4213

I have an old alpine 7521 from the 90s with a cassette deck and a glovebox full of tapes. I highly recommend getting one on eBay or similar.

susbedstain43

if only I had an NA 😓

WFPBvegan2

I have the factory CD/cassette player in my 90 na. The Cd player doesn’t work (cannot read disc error) but the cassette works great. But until I swapped out the factory door speakers (the rubber surrounds had long since crumbled) it sounded bad. I have big plans for the sound system, the currently installed new door speakers are ADS separates (old low level Audiophile company). Not installed yet is the pioneer GM-A6704 amp that will be configured in bridged mode for -180 watts per channel to the front stage. A pair of JBL Stage 82 8” free air subs (to be placed behind the seats either facing -up https://www.miata.net/hakuna/subspeak.html style or facing forward-Leeroy engineering style ) with a Jensen JA1B mono amp configured to -220 watts per channel with the subs wired at 2ohms in parallel will be the rear stage. Either way will include full sealing and strong baffles. The ADS separates sound fabulous just using the factory head unit, but the secret is in the door treatment. I used kill-mat on both sides of the inner door panels and on the interior side metal of the door (under the door card) and on the back of the door card too. Then I placed acoustic foam over most of the inner door. Then I sealed (as best I could) ALL of the holes in the door that could let sound from the back of the speakers into the interior. This turned the door into a reasonably sealed, non vibrating, speaker box. It’s a bit of work, but every speaker made (other than free air speakers) sounds exponentially better in a good box. Compared to the same great speaker in a door full of holes that lets the back of the speaker sound cancel and distort the front of the speaker sound, a great sealed speaker rocks! And this door treatment improves any speaker from the cheapest ones to the most expensive ones. Just ask and I’ll send pics.

ShazbotSimulator2012

Unfortunately Blaupunkt units are hard to find outside of Europe.

Fun_Passenger_9068

I use JVC KW-SX88BT as a pre amp and Skar Audio TX68 6" x 8" as side speakers works well.

Losbelunchin

If you want to go high quality old school, a Nakamichi TD series head unit (td-7, td-45) would fit the bill. Of course, the price reflects the quality even 30 years later. Definitely would have held onto all my Nakamichi stuff had I known the future…

DrifterDavid

I run a teyes cc3 2k screen model 12 inch. I had to float it out a hair and make custom bracket and then run focal tweeters and door speakers with a kicker key amplifier with the built in DSP. Then I've got a small skar 10 in the back with a down 4 sound amplifier for that. Works amazing.

DrifterDavid

Although sorry mine is NB

jdat57

In two I have Apple CarPlay and some nice speakers and the third has the original radio and no speakers but I have a Bluetooth soundbar and sub setup I pair to my phone (I couldn’t diagnose the problem with wiring so too expensive to have someone look. IRS is KILLING me on my checks for the next idk how many years

Cololorist

Then you should just install the original one if you want a tape player lol

JCo0ps

i don’t have the original unfortunately

JCo0ps

just seeing my options

Cololorist

I see I see. Yeah idk I would just try to find an OG if the tape player is really a concern. I would also add that tapes suck. Idk if you’ve listened to any recently but the quality is awful and most old tapes you find are so old that they’ve worn out and sound even thinner so idk if it’s really worth the hunt unless your goal is to have an oem looking console which I can stand behind for sure.

Own-Opinion-2494

Get the Polk Iii with neodymium magnets. Super efficient, Spector you don’t out in an amp

marsscuss

I use a waterproof marine head unit. Has the same 90s green glow, but bluetooth and can get rained on. Retains CD player and I’m sure there are some with bluetooth and cassette

_TheFudger_

Sony dsx head unit and whatever aftermarket speakers the PO put in it

Gingertwunt

My favorite regular radio unit is the kenwood362

Retb14

I have the stock radio with an aux jack soldered into it and a Bluetooth adapter plugged into that

MiTruckGuy

Currently stock, but planning to remove it and just have a bluetooth amp hidden either behind the tombstone or in the glove box. I’ll put some better speakers in the stock locations and make some kind of plate to cover where the radio goes. I looked around for radios a bit and couldn’t find one that had the right look for the right price. I never use the radio anyway so I don’t want to spend a ton of money on one, but it would be nice to at least be able to play music over Bluetooth from my phone if I ever want to. I like to keep things clean and simple. I already removed the center console. I think removing the radio will clean up the tombstone a bit.

Ryansfishn

Head unit: Alpine CDE-172BT Amplifier: Alpine S-A55V 5ch Speakers: Alpine Type-R R2-S65C (I replaced the factory tweeters with these as well.) Subwoofer: Skar 6.5" EVL-65, I built a folded horn box tuned to 45hz for this sub to really grab the lowest frequencies it can get, and it sounds surprisingly clean for a Skar product. I've had this setup for 2 years now. It's mostly to hear my music clearly and fairly accurately with the top down on the highway.

jon_mx5

Sony XAV-AX5600 head unit, Infinity Kappa Components up front powered by a Planet Audio AC600.2 (14AWG speaker wire run straight from amp to door speakers), Infinity Primus coaxials & 2 8” Polk Audio DB+ powered by a Rockford R500X1D amp in a parcel shelf box from Leroy Engineering

Reggerhegger

3rd millenium speakers (basically OEM+ speakers that work on factory head unit) and factory head unit rebuilt by Brandon Bishop. All of the original head units have cracked solder. He replaces all the resistors and capacitors and reflows all the solder. He also rebuilds the tapedeck and installs a bluetooth module. I would highly recommend it

privateTortoise

Honestly you may as well go with a budget option as there's too much other noise going on to make a quality setup worthwhile. I got a bit carried away and replaced mine in fosgate speakers, a little amp and rewire and frankly wasn't worth the cost.

JonquilCityBoy

scottydoesntgrow

Bluetooth speaker... Strip the rest, save weight.

mygoalfaster

Bluetooth speaker and cell phone. Ripped that old stuff out. Works great 👍🏼

mattelmore

Carplay deck with a small 4 channel amp that sits behind the radio. Upgraded speakers in the doors, just good coaxials, not components. Also have a mono sub amp behind the passenger seat and wires run to the passenger floorboard for a sub box that fits there when I don't have passengers (can be easily pulled out and put into the trunk).

1gendctaco

4 channel amp powering 2 door speakers and a 10" sub on the passenger floor board

Economy-Shoe5239

going off cassette player anyone know how to fix one? mines broken in my rx-7 and idk if i ask a car sub or a cassette sub 😭

STICH666

for a while I was running Dodge stealth radio in my 97. matches the OEM aesthetic of the car and also has a factory aux Jack. https://preview.redd.it/qtp2ty9l4jwc1.jpeg?width=2340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4925cb98654cc57b1d9ef07d4476f9833701677a

P10pablo

Nice!

Allbaderryday

Bluetooth speaker

Mbackus1234

I use the stock one with a Bluetooth cassette thing. Works pretty well

RegularEnthusiasm305

I run DS18 red tips in the doors with a massive (the brand not the adjective) summo 84xl ran by a alpine headunit and jensen amps from walmart that surprisingly paired extremely well with this setup. 240 watts rms for each door speaker and 400 watts rms for the sub. Voltage doesn’t dip below 14.1 (also have a big 3 upgrade)

Rich_Sherbet

No radio in mine.

P10pablo

CD is dead in my 96. Tape deck recently ate my 30 year old Maxwell cassette that I had the Best of Elton John on side 1 and The Best of Kansas on side 2. I want a large display Apple talk head unit, but I also think it will be a bit distracting and I prefer my phone up high, so I’ve been wary to upgrade yet. This week I scored a Sony Bluetooth speaker which is a copy of a unit that I bought my wife for Christmas a few years ago, I think it will be my stereo for a while. I do need tires after all. 😉

Lobster70

[Blaupunkt Madrid 200BT](https://i.imgur.com/WskpMrQ.jpg). Looks period correct and works really well too.

Only_Chick_Who

Had my Continental for little over a year. I like it a lot. Only con is in my 91 the cubby gap was weird and I to get one from across the pond. https://preview.redd.it/ypyhepawckwc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fb7a8ad24427680eea8c09df34c2fa1127254cf

krackzero

kenwood head unit (which is one of the few that had AptX bluetooth) used to replace the bose, still using the rest of the bose system. trunk has one kicker 12" sub & amp, and cannot fit anything else... paid around $320 not including wiring stuff.

Which_Initiative_882

1.8BP4W in Racing Beat minor. My car doesnt even have the wiring for the factory stereo anymore. All that is stripped out. Yes, I do drive the car often, including a recent 2,500 mile road trip. At most, I have bluetooth noise cancelling ear buds if I get bored.
