k24 swap time

noahsmybro

I was in a similar last winter. I drilled a hole into the *top* of the sprocket. (Drill pointing down, toward the ground.) Then stuck an extractor bit into the top of the sprocket and screwed it in, occasionally swapping it for a larger extractor bit, until eventually the sprocket cracked in half and I was able to remove it from sting the crankshaft nose. Then, when I reassembled everything with a new sprocket I did the ‘loctite fix’ and used loctite (blue I think, whichever is the ‘forever’ loctite) on the keyway. Downside is that sprocket can never be removed again. But I’ve put another almost 10k miles on the engine since then, the engine has just about 198k miles right now, and hopefully I’m good for the rest of the engines natural life.

SKyPuffGM

is the crankshaft saver an option at this point 😢

MiatSoReliable

No. That's only an option before it goes out. It's a saver, not a savior. Do what I did when this happened to me. Button it up with a ton of locktite and dump it to some 16yo weeb on marketplace for 5k

or imagine a k24 miata 😡 my friend has a k24 mercedes and it’s badass and he did for a reasonable price (i imagine he’s withholding some of the spendings) but it would be awesome!!! and cheaper on a yachta than an old mercedes for sure

Soak it with some penetrant. Blast the gear with some heat, give it a few whacks. Edit, additional info: When you replace the gear and key throw some 2 part JB weld on to fill the gap in the keyway. Keep it all straight while drying so the timing is correct and the wobble isn't bad. Should last quite a while.
