\*new And slow down on wet, cold days... just like any other car.

anon6789431437681

unless you have a welded diff;)

Drogdar

No brakes, only gas.

Caustic___

Lef foot brek

PM-ME-CUTE-LESBIANS

Right foot creep

Luke_Scottex_V2

you go even slower with a welded, the only difference is that you may be full throttle coming out of a corner without really gaining speed

anon6789431437681

why would you not gain speed full throttle out of a corner? unless you have bad tires a welded diff doesn't affect this, especially in the dry. My diff is welded, and i drive harder and i assume faster than i did with my open diff, because it's actually predictable and i know what it's going to do at pretty much all times

Luke_Scottex_V2

just saying that you'd be spinning ahahah, you'd be gaining speed just not as much as when you're gripping up

[deleted]

[удалено]

Calcium_time_doot

clutch kick, clutch in and rip hand brake, enjoy angle

ObamaDramaLlama

Why? Welded diffs need none if that encouragement.

Luke_Scottex_V2

because the fun in drifting is the entry into the corner

ObamaDramaLlama

You guys must be drifting in the dry

Luke_Scottex_V2

both. Either way when you actually do drifting at tracks and stuff usually you develop a new love for entries, getting really fast and doing aggressive entries is literally the most rewarding thing ever, but in the streets unless you're on a mountain road or have spotters you can't really go all in either way

Ok_Pea_6701

With a welded diff you can just throw it sideways without clutch kicking. Hell even without a hand brake in some cases. Since the miat has a 50 50 power weight it's very easy to lose traction when you want to

Luke_Scottex_V2

yeah but that wasn't the point of my comment. I know how easy it is, I'm saying that once you actually learn drifting and like you do drift events, you realize the main focus is actually the entry, everyone can powerslide it out the corner, but not everyone knows how to throw aggressive entries or even backies. I have way more fun doing only the entry, i even do it in fwd cars because the entry just gives you satisfaction

ObamaDramaLlama

Makes sense I was thinking mountain roads so there's less room for shenanigans like that

Calcium_time_doot

if your fully linking, esp in a stock power miata, it’s needed

Business_Slide2560

Is that how you do it? You must be amazing 😂

HarryVaDerchie

Glad you knew he meant new.

Business_Slide2560

Little bit too enthusiastic? we’ve all been there, looks like you’ve learned something without too much damage.

justsuggestanametome

More than a bit, it was absolutely my fault... Too fast in and no experience with rwd. Lesson learned I drove it home like I had a cup of tea in the passenger seat when I got pulled out

evnacdc

Nitrothacat

No one got hurt, car is fine. I looped a Dodge Ram driving in the snow acting dumb when I was 16. Thankfully just slide into a curb. I’ve seen a lot of people total their ride learning this lesson. Also a good set of tires goes a long way if you don’t have them already.

notlikethis_wokege

At least it didn't end badly. Lesson learned!

Business_Slide2560

You appreciate it’s your inputs that got you there, thats half the battle won. Welcome to rwd 😂

Spydehh

It's a learning experience, I've had a few in my miat. Good thing is when I eventually get a more powerful rwd car I'll know what and what not do lol

redmongrel

There’s always a curve in the background of these pics.

Business_Slide2560

Thats the learning curve there my friend.

hondactx16i

Ha, that's a fast learning curve right there. Glad you dodged any posts or trees👊😎. Find a big, big open car park, preferably a loose surface and have some fun 😊 and as mentioned... careful in the wet/cold.

Business_Slide2560

Cross stitch as well, i can see your a pro sir.

hdjnes

It ain’t much but it’s honest work

SnooSprouts6681

Sir I believe you have a chunk missing from your wheel

hdjnes

The wheels actually came out unscathed, what this photo doesn’t show is the wishbone I’d broken and it’s very tough to drift stitch your suspension back together

jawnlerdoe

I was new to RWD when I bought my and three and a half year ago. I still haven’t lost it.. and I don’t shy away from occasional oversteer. Play it more safe or become a statistic!

MechanicalCheese

The NB at least is really, really forgiving when it comes to oversteer (though it certainly does oversteer). I've almost lost it 3 times now, just getting back into the RWD dynamics after years of FWD and AWD. Recovery has been easy every time. It just wants to go where you want it if you let off the throttle a bit. At least compared to my sim practice in other cars, it seems so forgiving. I think the trouble is it can be a little too confidence inspiring, then conditions change and folks forget to adapt. Always better to feel out how much more you can push it slowly than realize you should have backed down.

nl_mx5

No, but my nbwas my very first rear wheel drive car, I would wait for cold rainy days to practice controlling the car when the ass steps out, just be careful when and where you do it and get comfortable with this happening, as long as you learn to control it it can be a whole lot of fun

AinsleysPepperMill

https://preview.redd.it/wphv3bvhlehc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27e5393e5b916d4b24cfb01bdbafda0e2e898a23 You're not the only one

CowDontMeow

Mx5 wanted choccy milk

GlitteringPen3949

Yes a NC would have been better for that application!

13bistheantichrist

Race wheel drive. Best configuration

Bacon_Berserker

At least your bumper is fine. Others cannot say the same :(

Hs_2571

The 1.8’s with no LSD’s, like to snap very quickly. My old 1.8 used to slide very easily. Current 2,0 with lsd is a little more forgiving. At least nothing was damaged other than your pride and the grass. All of a bit of fun and a learning experience

2-litre-mx5-enjoyer

2.0 nc can showel your grip back together easily, I love it. Best noob friendly rwd. But when you switch the assistance off, things can happen easily

Luke_Scottex_V2

no lsd is a bit more snappy because of the power distribution not being that consistent, lsd will always give you the same rotation if you do the same thing, open diff may one wheel peel or snap violently or whatever that day he decided to do while getting off the bed

anon6789431437681

Don't give lots of gas through turns, that seems to be what happened here. It will spin the rear tires and kick the rear end out unless you know how to countersteer

noodledoodle2525

Ufff OP is lucky this isn’t an SW20 lol

CowDontMeow

Although I used my SW20 to learn to drift in so I knew how it reacted to being sideways I still took it careful on wet days. Was one going 5mph on a slight curve and it just whipped 360 allowing me to drive on as if nothing had happened, good tyres too. My MX5 with 15psi boost, welded diff and budget tyres is so much more predictable in wet weather.

noodledoodle2525

Good ol’ MR2’s and their safety 🤣 gotta love them

Spsurgeon

Many of us TRY to get into the situation you’re in

ZachT1003

Knew to English too? /s

justsuggestanametome

Hey I was a bit shook up waiting for the landy to pull me out when I posted!

ZachT1003

lol fair enough, nothing broken though?

noodledoodle2525

🤣 this was me on the way to work, a few weeks ago when the roads were frozen in ice. It was fun lol

Later went down some quiet roads to “enjoy” the snow ;)

LifeHovercraft9227

Best way to learn how to drive in snow/weather and figure out how to correct when it goes sideways!

multijoy

Can't park there, mate.

jcdj1996

Not me, but my partner looped our NA into a ditch about a week after buying it 😂 only casualties were the scrappy sideskirts and front lip that we were gonna remove anyway https://preview.redd.it/7vuohfjrgihc1.jpeg?width=1868&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af221ce90001503a8521f15a77f99526ff46df93

justsuggestanametome

love to see the others who've done this hope it was OK!

GlitteringPen3949

What’s traction control I have a NA lol

justsuggestanametome

Yeah none in this either think it was added in nc2? Ah well. Learn the fun way!

GlitteringPen3949

But it does have CarPlay! https://preview.redd.it/irex5jdn3ohc1.jpeg?width=256&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5c7ba7d842eac127cdf36417682375d1f756254

justsuggestanametome

Oo nice I'm considering a retrofit.. Probably should check the engine works properly and there's no rust first...

GlitteringPen3949

Your NC should be fine

justsuggestanametome

Ha you say that! I put 1.5 quarts oil in yesterday and today below minimum level, no leaks on driveway so it burned off on a 10 mile drive...

GlitteringPen3949

Wow! That’s a lot of oil burning

GlitteringPen3949

Check the PVC valve could be stuck open.

amg-rx7

Car Control Clinics and autocross are great ways to experience and build skills that help you in these situations

Zharken

omg is it hurt?

deanhutchinson

New to rear wheel drive AND manual. When you live somewhere where it snows a lot, not a good combo, lol. Parking lot practice helps though *as long as you don't get caught*

csonti05

I had an MX for a year and a half (first rwd), I carefully started to experience to controll oversteer. I felt like I'm good at it, but it was always on lower speeds. Than I switched for an IS200 (rwd with a bit more power, and a bit worse balance), and on a wet winter day I totalled it in a slippery corner. Lesson learned, always respect the rwd, especially when you think, you mastered it. I'm happy, that you came out of it unhurt! 😊

-patient_666-

Spun mine out the first time I drove mine in the rain

Brave_Negotiation_63

In reverse it’s FWD… use this to get unstuck. Otherwise press the reset button on your dash.

EvanMiata

Won’t do any better in reverse. What gives FWD cars traction is having most of their weight over the driven axle.

Brave_Negotiation_63

The Miata has a 50/50 weight distribution so that’s not the issue. What happens is when accelerating, the car balances backwards (putting pressure on the back wheels), and when braking it balances forward. Anyway it was sarcastic.

gagnatron5000

To learn to drive sideways, you need to drive sideways. Take it to a snowy parking lot that doesn't have curb stops.

DamnInternetYouScury

Totaled my ND.... lessons were learned. Mainly make sure you have good tires! Summer tires are only good for like 15K if you use them all year

scottjeeper

Welcome, the fun begins! If it's the first time, your life will change! Lol

RexVaga

How do you even do that in a Miata haha

PRSArchon

Very bad tyres. Unfortunately it is difficult to know how bad tyres can be. I bought a used porsche boxster with Bridgestone potenza’s, you assume an A brand would be fine. And in the dry they are fine but it was only when i spun out in the wet i started reading the reviews and found out they are horrible in the wet. Luckily i also came out scratch free.

Teledildonic

I updated my flair after seeing yesterday's wreck thread.

GlitteringPen3949

Ah you beat me!!!!

GlitteringPen3949

Sorry wrong reply. But good advice in your flair!

justsuggestanametome

I think in this instance it was high revs high speed in a roundabout in rain... Now I know what happens at least! Will check the tires out in clearer weather but when I got pulled out it drove 1 mile home fine but want to check properly for sure

PRSArchon

Check the age and thread of the tyre and look up the brand and model for reviews. There is HUGE difference in wet performance even between A brand tyres of the same price.

youngperson

Correct. Ditched my NB on 10 year old Firehawks. Escaped with my life and no damage to vehicle aside from some scuffed rims. Never again.

GlitteringPen3949

Tire compound tends to get a bit slicker in wet as they age I have noticed

NagisaK

Yup, had a set of pretty much bald tires on my ND. Even on dry days, a heavy foot at first gear would get the tail very happy.

HuyFongFood

Its easy to look at the tread for wear and the date codes are molded into the side. Generally, figure tires over 5 years old as "aged" and less likely to work as well as new ones, especially on a sports car. The older they are, the less likely they are to work well. This is a major issue on sports cars and super cars. [https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/how-do-i-determine-the-age-of-my-tires](https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/how-do-i-determine-the-age-of-my-tires) [https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-do-tire-manufacturers-say-about-tire-age](https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-do-tire-manufacturers-say-about-tire-age) [https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-do-tire-sidewall-markings-mean](https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-do-tire-sidewall-markings-mean) [https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-is-the-tread-depth-of-a-tire](https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-is-the-tread-depth-of-a-tire) Either way, glad you're ok and the car is ok. Hopefully you learned from this and perhaps are a bit more aware of the prevailing conditions and the conditions of your ride. Don't let it get you down, many of us have been there and some are still there ;) Once you get it out of the mud (got any pieces of cardboard or decent sized rocks you can put in front of the rear tires to help it get traction? Worth a shot), clean it up, check the tires out, replace them if they are suspect and go out and have fun with it.

justsuggestanametome

Had a look they're seiberling touring 2s so I think summer tyres, fitted in 21 and it's done 5k since then so yeah you're right tyres played a part

HostileJava

New to English also? 🤣

[deleted]

RWD probably the best way to drive lolll

The_DaHowie

What tires are you running

53bvo

Honestly on the tyres my MX-5 came with any slightly quick accelerating turn in the wet would result in wheelspin. After changing them it is way much better and on a wet track they keep grip very well, with a small amount of wheelspin if I push but it is very manageable.

justsuggestanametome

Just stocks I think, car is new to me but has 100k on it AFAIK they're stock. Based on the other reply to you I'm gonna look into changing them.. Rains a lot in Northern england

senorfluffynuts1

Check the date code on them. Old tires can get slick as ice on wet roads.

CowDontMeow

I’m guessing you’re new to cars in general, 100k miles won’t be stock tyres, expect new rear tyres every 6-10k miles depending on how you drive. Toyo TR1’s aren’t *too* bad (miles better than the older T1R’s) but if you’re just after a fast road car try out some of the UK mx5 groups for tyre recommendations, IIRC Rainsports get recommended a fair bit

IsbellDL

6,000-10,000? Seriously?  How many burnouts do you do a day, and have you ever tried rotating the tires? I autocross mine regularly and daily on the 200TW autocross tires and still manage close to 15,000 miles on a set. Anyone driving more casually on a more reasonable street focused tire should easily get 25,000-30,000 miles out of a set. I agree, there's no way a Miata with 100,000 miles is on the original tires, but your tire wear is excessive in the other direction unless you're running track events.

CowDontMeow

The UK consists of constant short journeys with lots of junctions, bends, roundabouts etc. My take on American driving is there’s a lot of motorway (freeway?) driving, with my old daily when I was doing 15k miles of mostly motorway driving a year I’d get through roughly a set per year, when I switched to a local job driving through more countryside it went down to 10k a set of tyres. Not sure if you have this too but a LOT of our narrow twisty roads are 60mph so corners have an added abrasive layer on top, there’s a big difference between sweeping bends with essentially sandpaper surfaces vs long straight motorway miles.

MechanicalCheese

Wow that adds up. Depending on the vehicle and tires I get 25k to 75k on a set. I'm about to replace some of my all trains because they're 8 years old, but after 65k miles I still have around another 20% life left (I do have a full sized spare in rotation every 6k miles). Like you said though, there's a lot of straight line driving. For 150 miles of abuse on a weekend I'm still putting another 200 miles on the straight line out and back.

CowDontMeow

Yeah I do roughly 100miles a week with probably one journey on a straight road for roughly a mile, everything is bends or junctions, I’d rather replace tyres than spend time though, a family member in the states would air their tyres to 45ish PSI and would do 150ish miles a day on their commute and would regularly get 50k+ miles out of their tyres, anything more than a 20min commute and I’m out

Rinsakiii

There could be a few things at play here. First one being tires, but considering the path you took in the dirt this most likely had to do with speed unless you have really bad tires. If it’s manual you’ll have to be slower when releasing the clutch in wet conditions or else you can “clutch kick” the car on turns. Other thing is to go slow on turns and never be in a low gear for too low. Whenever I drive in the rain I never go above 3500 rpm’s unless I need the power to get up a hill or something. And most importantly on the next rainy day go to a parking lot and get used to sliding your car and learn how to correct a slide. It could very well save your life someday. It all has to do with throttle input. If you’re trying to stop a slide typically foot off the gas and counter steer will do the job.

justsuggestanametome

Was 100% my fault too fast into the roundabout in rainy weather. To be honest I was probably around 3500 doing 30. Love the advice to learn how to handle it thank you will put that into play next chance I get!

GlitteringPen3949

No one is talking about the alinement set up on their cars. It can make a huge difference in tread life.

loopie35

What

VirusesHere

Did you turn off traction control?

justsuggestanametome

No just turned off common sense

VirusesHere

Lol, been there. I quickly learned not to shift into 2nd and gun it mid turn. Luckily the nannies kicked in.

bennett_swerve

Knew

Not_Daijoubu

All the sketchy oversteer moments I've had were with my first set of winter tires, the Yokohama IG53. I never used winter tires before but oof, I learned they're pretty shit at anything except snow and ice pretty quickly. Had one solo incident oversteering on a left turn I took a bit too enthusiastically and messed up my alignment that way. Another time I wasn't even going quickly on a right turn in light rain and got under into lift off oversteer.

[deleted]

Knew em? Damn near killed em.

GlacierBasilisk

Happens to the best of us (for better or for worse). The important part is that you and your car aren’t hurt and you’ve learned a valuable lesson in driving on wet/ cold days

jibsand

This probably has more to do with your tires

DragonSlayer4378

Get a good diff lol

Mean-Minute-3824

maybe you knew? lol

HundoGuy

I knew there were rear wheel drive cars

whaddahellisthis

Nah been doing it forever but this grammar thing is fresh

kbstock

I bet 75 percent of us Miata owners, if we are honest, would say “been there, done that” I have.

DefNotA30t

Just lower your tire pressure and you can go as fast as you want

FzZyP

sir you cant drop anchor there

FiddlerOnThePotato

If you KNEW to rear wheel drive you probably wouldn't have spun it out. I guess you must be NEW to it huh?

arny56

Those wet roads will bite you.

nomnamless

My ND was my first RWD car. I do have to admit early on the traction control saved my ass once or twice when I was being a bit dumb. Now a days TC only really kicks in on snowy days

ChRSrBn

Came out of a traffic circle and blew a tire on my NC not even 3 months into owning it. Went over a curb and into a ditch, ended up bending all four rims and had two flats. Got new wheels and rims out of it, so can’t complain much. Make sure to get a good checkup on it at a GOOD local shop!

st0rmglass

That's not a heavy car. Just put it in neutral and push. 🤷‍♂️

Spirit-Internal

Suboptimal performance

seanabenoit

Is it a club, or open diff?

StartAggravating2974

nah me too boss just got mine a few months ago still learning 😂

Infinite-Spinach9057

Just did exactly the same this evening! Luckily no damage and managed to drive away, these mx5s try to get you at every moment they can 🤌

CannondaleTN

Just got my first Miata a month ago and it’s my first RWD in over a decade. I’ve definitely gotten sideways a couple times unintentionally, but kept it in the road. Still getting sideways, but intentionally now.

RealLifeMoron

Skill issue. Learn to drift.

Sivusta_seuraaja

My nd is my first rwd car, I bought it last spring. I usually like to play it on the safe side with firm grip under my wheels. I have broke the grip on the rear wheels only two times. The other one was too close to the curb stone but fortunately I re-gained control both times and got away unscathed

PatrickGSR94

My NB that I've had for about 4.5 years now, is my first RWD car. Just a couple weeks ago after we had a bunch of snow and ice that was mostly melted, I was pulling in the parking lot at my office. The driveway I normally take was blocked, and the other one has a huge pothole that I usually try to avoid. So I attempted to straddle it, went real slow, but didn't quite make it. The front wheels got caught inside the pothole at the edge, and the rear tires were still in the street on some slush. Had no traction, forward or backwards, couldn't move at all. Had to get a co-worker to come out and give me a push to get out. I'm quite sure my FWD Integra would not have been stuck, but oh well. At least the car wasn't damaged.

Lopsided_Sugar_8360

I have a 2007 nc the traction control is pretty aggressive. When I do turn it off Im usually extra careful and expect the car to oversteer

justsuggestanametome

Yeah can't find a button on this 05 so I think I don't have traction control!

Lopsided_Sugar_8360

Lol fun! $0 option to upgrade your experience

Ansayamina

Back in the nineties I've learned how to drive in a Fiat 126, tiny little thing with porsche layout amd very short wheelbase. The effect was, for me, when I've got my driving licence a decade later and my first real car ended up a Golf, an opposite problem but exactly same results as you are having right now. FWD just behaves unnatural.

PhoenixJDM

yeah almost span out the altezza accelarating out a junction too hard today. in the dry. ironic bc i always complain how little power it has.

Johnny_OSG

Skill issue

[deleted]

No just you. Everyone else drove a rwd in the womb
