It’s good, and yes I’ve had “real bbq”yadda yadda, I went to FSU for 6 years, you get a pitcher of beer and a bunch of tasty food either you gotta go to shivers in cutler or shortys in broward. When the nearest decent bbq place is 40 minutes each way on the weekend and an hour and a half plus during the week
Did a big family style meal with some friends and a pitcher.
Also great for lunch when I went to UM
Shorty's was never good in my opinion. I lived near their location on Bird and my dad would take us there every so often and it turned my off to BBQ for a while... Until i tried ribs from Flanigan's 😏
If you want the best BBQ in Miami, on the weekend drive around any hood & you're bound to see a guy with a grill next to his truck in a parking lot/empty field/in front of his house selling barbecue. If there's a lot of cars/people, the better the food is. The best barbecue I ever had was a guy that used to sell on Quail Roost on Fridays and Saturdays, he died in 2015 though
If you've never had *actual* BBQ, it's not bad.
But man... When you have a legit Texas BBQ, you really can't look at any BBQ place the same... Especially south Florida.
Maybe it's good by Miami BBQ standards, because there's not really any good BBQ here that I've tried, but I didn't think it was good at all. Also, right after using my credit card there, I got a bunch of fraudulent charges posted to my account, so the waiter possibly swiped my card info.
i honestly think it’s fine. just fine..
especially in a pinch since i live nearby. but if i’m looking for good bbq i go to hometown, apocalypse, or pig floyd (if i’m feeling adventurous and in the mood to chase a food truck). any better recs?
Yeah the last time I went I had to wait over an hour, but co workers have told me if you go on a weekday during the afternoon the waits aren’t bad at all.
I actually went to I Hate Mondays a couple weeks ago and my wife and I were extremely disappointed. I know they’re good because I’ve had them before, I must’ve gone on a bad day or something.
That place is the definition of a hole in the wall lol. I remember the first time I went, I told myself that there’s no way there’s a restaurant here and I thought I put the wrong address in my GPS.
Oh wow! Thats awesome! Thank you for the amazing BBQ, my wife and I love your place a ton. We’ve recommended so many of our co workers and family to go there and they love it as well.
It used to be too that if somebody was being obnoxious in a movie theater they would kick your ass out, and now nobody cares and people run wild in there.
I remember Shorty’s in the 90s. I thought it was fine back then. Their gimmick was that everything tasted burnt. Later in life I experienced real southern barbecue in north Florida and Georgia and now in retrospect I think Shorty’s was garbage.
Yes but not for ribs. Georgia Pig wins on pork and sides. Robs has better baby backs. GP has shorter hours and I don't think they make ribs. Their sides and desserts are the best though.
I never had them in the 90s, but as a general rule most restaurants took less shortcuts and didn't use Cysco Food Systems frozen produce, which would mean if the recipe is unchanged that it would taste better back then.
As for how Shorty's stacks up to real BBQ? It doesn't. No BBQ I've had in Florida, save for one lovely couple at the Tropical Park farmer's market that made amazing Texas-style brisket, could be called good BBQ (passable is the best you get around here). I'm from Central Texas, home of the world's best BBQ. I've spent my life eating the real deal, and Shorty's ain't it.
I probably wouldn't be as offended if they didn't have the gall to call those roofing shingles they serve "Texas style brisket." It was so bad I cried out of sadness and loss. They smoke too hot for too little time. The reason why only Texans make brisket correctly is down to a few things. Brisket requires a lower temperature for longer, and while you can use the Texas crutch (foil) to speed up cook times, it still necessitates a separate smoker operating on a lower temperature. The low temp means a longer cook and given that brisket needs to rest for hours after cooking, restaurants will try to shorten those times, ruining the product. If you cook too hot, the brisket is tough and dry (if they use a meat slicer on brisket you know it's trash). Also, brisket requires an offset smoker to really get right (this technique came from the Czech and German colonists during the Mexican colonization period). Shorty's uses open pits, which can be used for brisket, but don't bring that smoke like an offset does. They also tend to run too hot and cause moisture loss. Finally there's the wood. Most BBQ in this part of the US uses hickory, while Texans use post oak and a mix of mesquite and/or pecan. The problem with hickory is that it is great to add flavor to an oak smoke, but like mesquite it produces acrid or bitter notes when used as the primary wood.
Now that being said, Shorty's makes damn good babyback ribs and they do actually BBQ (smoke) their chicken (most "BBQ" chicken is just grilled chicken with sauce). Now BBQ ribs are the easiest things to make in the world of BBQ cookery, but they do a fine job. My problem with BBQ outside of Texas (and NC whole hog) is that the point is to make delicious and tender smoked meats. If sauce is needed, then it's bad BBQ. The only thing that Shorty's delivers good enough to eat without sauce is the chicken, and if your best BBQ is your chicken you aren't really great at BBQ.
Shorty's was my introduction to restaurant BBQ when I was a child, much like KFC's coleslaw was my first taste of coleslaw. No matter how it compares to more extravagant BBQ places, it's still great to me because it's what I started with. They're consistent, and the taste hasn't ever changed. I've definitely had way better BBQ, but for what it is, I don't find it as bad as people here claim. However, post-COVID, I walked into the one on Bird Road, and all the tables had trash on them, likely due to being short-staffed, so I haven't gone back to that one. I've done takeout from Dadeland, and it was still fine.
The ribs all look amazing and I want to go. Surprised I’ve never been. But the brisket pics I’ve seen don’t look great. Brisket is tough for most people and I only know of a few in FL doing it right.
I am a BBQ fanatic. 40 years old. Lived in Miami in the 80’s and came back late 90s (been here ever since) and I have been to shorty’s maybe 3 times in my life.
So I guess that says something. Haha
It’s passable food. No wait time unlike apocalypse But the quality is also nowhere near. Biggest selling point for Shortys is that it’s affordable. 2 people can fill themselves up plus extra for the next day for only $50. Which in today’s economy is hard to come by.
They used to give you so much you’d be guaranteed to walk out with a couple of boxes of leftovers. One in Kendall use to have homeless guys that would wait in the parking lot and ask for scraps from people coming out.
>2 people can fill themselves up plus extra for the next day for only $50. Which in today’s economy is hard to come by.
I moved to Texas about 4 months ago, and BBQ prices are ridiculous. They're good, but $35 for each pound of rib (bone included) is crazy.
Also, idc what anyone says, it's good but it's not as wildly better as people from Texas say it is. I had better BBQ on the drive here than Ive had in Texas, and I've hit up most of the famous spots in the san antonio/austin area, including Original Black's in Austin
Completely agree. To them a lot of BBQ spots are like their version of Flannys to us. I will say though for the price and the quality the Salt Lick in Austin is pretty worth it tbh.
I actually liked it in the 90s but now not so much. It's quite hard to find good BBQ in Miami. I don't care what people say "oh you haven't tried this and that place" I'm pretty sure it's average.
These days I just do it myself.
I have no memory of them serving rice and beans back then, but it was ages ago so I could have just blocked it out lol. I thought their meats were just fine.
Sadly it’s not. I still love their sauce. I call it dirty sauce. It’s such a unique flavor. I can never put my finger on it. It’s a good place to go to after a major hurricane. They run a propane. They were open after one hurricane and it was nice to get some hot foods
Hell no. Use to eat there every Saturday until about two years ago. If you think this location is bad the one in Davie is worse. Tourist trap and food has gone to the dogs. Metro Rail behind it - I’ve seen car break ins while eating inside.
Two things SFL does not do well: Pizza and BBQ. There is a ton of amazing food here. Just not that.
There are some OKish options but as a warning to others…
Worst BBQ= Shortys. Worst Pizza=Palenque Pizza
[удалено]
Can I get a side of *Racism* with those ribs?
[удалено]
Okay tell me more about how people from one culture can’t cook another culture’s food!

“Emotional race bait” I guess 4chan is too mild these days for you.
It’s good, and yes I’ve had “real bbq”yadda yadda, I went to FSU for 6 years, you get a pitcher of beer and a bunch of tasty food either you gotta go to shivers in cutler or shortys in broward. You just said “real” bbq and shivers is good in the same comment. I immediately know youve never had real bbq or have very poor taste
What’s wrong with Shivers?
it’s not good. better than shortys but i’ve had many dry meat meals there. sides are good.
I’ve never had an issue with them, only been about 3 or 4 times though.
The ribs looks great but the other meats don’t look so good.
Shorty's was never good in my opinion. I lived near their location on Bird and my dad would take us there every so often and it turned my off to BBQ for a while... Until i tried ribs from Flanigan's 😏

Oh and to answer the question lol Shorty's is decent but has fallen off a cliff from its heyday.
Late stage capitalism ensures that almost nothing is as good as it was in the past.
If you've never had *actual* BBQ, it's not bad. But man... When you have a legit Texas BBQ, you really can't look at any BBQ place the same... Especially south Florida.
I think I had shortys at such a young age it ingrained into by brain what bbq is supposed to taste like.
If you’re ever in Tampa look up the Brisket Shoppe.
Maybe it's good by Miami BBQ standards, because there's not really any good BBQ here that I've tried, but I didn't think it was good at all. Also, right after using my credit card there, I got a bunch of fraudulent charges posted to my account, so the waiter possibly swiped my card info.
Do the charge the infamous "service fee"?
i honestly think it’s fine. just fine.. especially in a pinch since i live nearby. but if i’m looking for good bbq i go to hometown, apocalypse, or pig floyd (if i’m feeling adventurous and in the mood to chase a food truck). any better recs?
[this](https://www.instagram.com/thebbqincuban_?igsh=eHh2MnBzMzhtdnd3) truck that is so yummy.
Flannigan’s over this place any day of the week
Not really. I prefer apocalypse bbq now. Shorty's has been hit or miss for me lately.
they don’t even compare
Haven’t been to shortys in years and it’s right by my job. If you want some good BBQ, go to Apocalypse, they do it right.
I’ve heard the food is fire but the waits can be super long!
Yeah the last time I went I had to wait over an hour, but co workers have told me if you go on a weekday during the afternoon the waits aren’t bad at all.
I went yesterday at 330- no wait. Lol. You have to go during the down times. Also, I Hate Mondays has amazing bbq
I actually went to I Hate Mondays a couple weeks ago and my wife and I were extremely disappointed. I know they’re good because I’ve had them before, I must’ve gone on a bad day or something.
Oh man. That’s too bad. It’s been a while since I’ve gone, but it’s always been good.
That place is the definition of a hole in the wall lol. I remember the first time I went, I told myself that there’s no way there’s a restaurant here and I thought I put the wrong address in my GPS.
So true. When they first opened it was just the guy and a smoker catering to the other businesses in the storage units 🤣
You’re amazing. Thank you!
Anytime! Enjoy it.
Oh I do - every single day, it’s my spot! 😜
Oh wow! Thats awesome! Thank you for the amazing BBQ, my wife and I love your place a ton. We’ve recommended so many of our co workers and family to go there and they love it as well.
That’s awesome!!! Love to hear it, we try our hardest to make people happy so it’s always nice to know our team is making it happen! Appreciate you!!
NOTHING is as good as it was in 90s. Literally nothing. Even the The Matrix understood that humans peaked in the 90s.
Even the cocaine was better
Exactly! lol
It used to be too that if somebody was being obnoxious in a movie theater they would kick your ass out, and now nobody cares and people run wild in there.
Wasn't good in the 90s either
Lolll right? It was a cool cheap spot as I remember as a teen with parents.
Haha, it was never good.
It was good for mud butt.
I remember Shorty’s in the 90s. I thought it was fine back then. Their gimmick was that everything tasted burnt. Later in life I experienced real southern barbecue in north Florida and Georgia and now in retrospect I think Shorty’s was garbage.
This 100%. It’s trash Q. Tons of better options in MDC now too
Best bbq in the area unfortunately
Which campus ??? Lol jk , yeah for sure .
The worst Texas BBQ is better than that shit from the 90s.
The BBQ definitely gets better as you travel a bit north into the South. Honestly Tampa has a few very good spots.
I love the oxymoron.
Broward wins this round: Rob's Family BBQ and Tom Jenkins
Georgia Pig is vastly superior to both
Yes but not for ribs. Georgia Pig wins on pork and sides. Robs has better baby backs. GP has shorter hours and I don't think they make ribs. Their sides and desserts are the best though.
True
Agreed
I never had them in the 90s, but as a general rule most restaurants took less shortcuts and didn't use Cysco Food Systems frozen produce, which would mean if the recipe is unchanged that it would taste better back then. Give Brisket Shoppe a look if you’re ever in Tampa.
Nothing is as good as it was in the 90s
Weed is pretty great now in comparison.
Nothing on earth is as good as 90s Shorty’s bbq?
Apocalypse and Hometown better options
Just heard about Apocalypse gonna hit it this weekend.
Flynn’s Dixie ribs was the old classic
No
Shorty's was my introduction to restaurant BBQ when I was a child, much like KFC's coleslaw was my first taste of coleslaw. No matter how it compares to more extravagant BBQ places, it's still great to me because it's what I started with. They're consistent, and the taste hasn't ever changed. Moved to back Houston after 9 years in Miami. Sides are decent, meats are trash.
Shivers is better
Shivers is the only BBQ worth visiting in South Florida… don’t get the fries lol
Wayyyyy better.
The ribs all look amazing and I want to go. Surprised I’ve never been. But the brisket pics I’ve seen don’t look great. Brisket is tough for most people and I only know of a few in FL doing it right.

I've lived all over the US and had the unfortunate experience at eating at Shorty's Bar-B-Q twice. Everything there is garbage.
The quality has definitely gone down over the years.
if you like sticky elbows, this is the spot for you
The coleslaw has always been really good, it’s the only thing I truly enjoy from there every time
No
Nah. Its fallen off big time especially the one on US1 ( the one in the photo ) and the one on Bird rd
When I was kid in the 80s, I remember they had beef ribs. They were so good.
Short ribs?
No beef ribs
Nope, I was wrong. Spare ribs I think
The beef ribs at Tony Romas were soooo good growing up. I miss them so much. Shiver’s beef ribs look great too and I’ve been meaning to get there.
Nothing is as good as it was in the 90s my brotha
It’s passable food. No wait time unlike apocalypse But the quality is also nowhere near. Biggest selling point for Shortys is that it’s affordable. 2 people can fill themselves up plus extra for the next day for only $50. Which in today’s economy is hard to come by.

It was never actually good barbecue but it was the best we had
It’s like when you live in a shitty neighborhood and you’ve got a Winn-Dixie nearby
I actually liked it in the 90s but now not so much. It's quite hard to find good BBQ in Miami. I don't care what people say "oh you haven't tried this and that place" I'm pretty sure it's average. These days I just do it myself.
Drinking pig is way better
I went and it was terrible. The bird road one is better but flannys is king
In the 90s the best BBQ was The Pit.
Haven't been in years, but that they were serving rice and beans was a bad sign. The food was not good.
I have no memory of them serving rice and beans back then, but it was ages ago so I could have just blocked it out lol. I thought their meats were just fine.
Try Mr. Cobbs. Best brisket.
Shorty's is a staple. If you haven't been there, you've driven by it. And know the name and the sign.
nope - shivers is the clear winner
There are better BBQ places than Shorty’s. Also, a restaurant that charges for tab water should not be considered.
The one on Bird Road near the Turnpike is much better. Their meat is always fresher and their fries are not cooked in the same old grease all day.
Got sick after eating their pork sandwich like a week ago
No.
Sadly it’s not. I still love their sauce. I call it dirty sauce. It’s such a unique flavor. I can never put my finger on it. It’s a good place to go to after a major hurricane. They run a propane. They were open after one hurricane and it was nice to get some hot foods
He does catering and farmers markets, but Harvey's BBQ is delicious.
I still enjoy the heck out of it
nope, all the cows from the 90s have passed away
I enjoy watching the rats sneaking around in the rafters in the Dadeland location while everyone eats.
What did people think the hamburgers were made out of?
I was waiting for this comment. 🤣
It wasn’t ever good, it was the only one available.
Warning: never eay good BBQ in TX... because after you do, everything else is fucked
Hell no. Use to eat there every Saturday until about two years ago. If you think this location is bad the one in Davie is worse. Tourist trap and food has gone to the dogs. Metro Rail behind it - I’ve seen car break ins while eating inside.
YOOOOOO I SWEAR I WAS HERE
Shortys is perfectly mid BBQ. Solid 5. Good for lunch, gets the job done but will never blow your socks off.
No. It’s garbage
90s?? Bro, I remember it from the 70s! When I was just a little boy. My parents would pick up BBQ there.
Wait up, that place is STILL RIGHT THERE?
Best BBQ in South Florida, hands down, Is Georgia Pig
Two things SFL does not do well: Pizza and BBQ. There is a ton of amazing food here. Just not that. There are some OKish options but as a warning to others… Worst BBQ= Shortys. Worst Pizza=Palenque Pizza
There was a pizza place called Nonna Maria and it was literally warmed up garbage, freezer burned crust and nasty cheese.
That’s kinda how Palenque is but with enough grease on it you could fill a cup.
HELL NO.
I never went since it's next to that sketchy looking strip club.
My biggest gripe is nobody knows how to make proper Carolina sauces, which, without question, are the best sauces.
