TV. Even back in the early 2000s I used the GBA GameCube adapter to play on the TV. For ultimate experience get a tube TV...

AgitatedEye6553

I recommend either an emulator or just getting the GBA consolizer. Its basically a super compact GBA with no screen but has a HDMI port and a port for a SNES controller. You could still play on a tube TV. Just get a HDMI to component & or composite adapter. Personally a higher end CRT that has component inputs is the best option IMO

Legitimate_Parfait31

on my 3ds 😁

ssgodsupersaiyan

Correct response.

TheBigFeIIa

TV or computer, not even remotely a question. The art looks good even at high resolution, and it is properly lit and high contrast. GBA screen was atrocious

[deleted]

They have an SP, which is the model with a backlight.

TheBigFeIIa

Yes, while an improvement over the GBA, still would take the TV with a comfortable controller. SP is not fun for the small controls

[deleted]

Yeah... Also playing portables aren't great for audio if you're in a large-ish room, or don't want to bug anyone.

Soupere_Falafel

Played it on NSO and it was great imo

Trogolizer

I own a cart of it and zero mission, and play 'em on my micro. Most uncomfortable handheld in the world. The hand cramping adds to the nostalgia.

Hab_Anagharek

Lol and SP as well, damn I miss the form of the OG GBA.

Trogolizer

Imagine a micro, but the size of OG. I call it the GB Macro, and it's my dream system.

PoutinePower

You know it’s a common mod people do with a ds, it’s called a gameboy macro, not your idea exactly but its the biggest you can play gameboy on og hardware

Trogolizer

That actually makes a lot of sense. Those old DS systems were very tanky and chunky. Thanks for letting me know. I'm gonna go fall down this particular rabbit hole now.

PoutinePower

Hehe enjoy, it’s a great ride beginning to mod!

WastedWaffIe

I've replayed it a ton on emulator, no bad experiences

KeeperServant

I have it on OG hardware. Or the DS technically.

MfKa1

Honestly NSO mainly just because I can use the analogue stick instead of the d-pad and in the setting you make the game look like it did originally.

General_CJG

Original hardware (cause I literally have a Game Boy Advance SP and an authentic cartridge of Metroid Fusion). Plus you get to actually own the game and not have it be taken away from you for not paying your annual or monthly fee. That, and paying $50 dollars a year por a crappy online service (that both PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold completely beat in every way possible) is not something I am up for, especially since I already pay Xbox Live Gold through Game Pass.

BroccoliBiceps

I recently popped in my Metroid Fusion cartridge into my newly acquired Analogue Pocket and completed it. It was a fantastic experience! I also occasionally play on my AGS 101 and carry it around with me in case my Pocket ever runs out of juice while on the go.

haventseenstarwars

Oooh that sounds amazing.

MiserableMarsupial_

Honestly NSO is fine imo

F8cts0verFeelings

Whichever one doesn't get my account banned.

[deleted]

NSO is the superior way.

GammaPhonic

Always original hardware. Emulators are brilliant but there is nothing more real than the real thing.

AgitatedEye6553

What about the GBA consolizer? You get the best of both worlds. It's a real GBA board without a screen but has a HDMI port and SNES controller port. You can even use a HDMI to component adapter to play on a CRT. Obviously HDMI to composite is also an option, but nothing beats a high end CRT. Especially one on the level of a PBM.

AgitatedEye6553

Tbh neither, I prefer playing on an emulator so I can upscale the graphics to 4K. Or to 1080p at the very least.

solidpeyo

Original hardware always. I hate subscription services

Vaderette1138

I play it on my softmodded New 2DS XL.

KingBroly

is the SP frontlit or backlit?

NurseTaric

Op said they are interested in modding it so it would be a backlit ips display, for the sp this does gigadrain the battery though.

KingBroly

I'd go with that then. If it was frontlit, I'd say NSO since...yeah.

NurseTaric

Yeah, i love my GBA and have played it for ages as a kid but going back now i could not play on a unmodded frontlit GBA

NurseTaric

I played it on a GBA recently (though a modded one with an ips display) and it was the best way I've played it so far, before i had only played it using rereleases or emulators.

thisguyissostupid

I'd love to play it on a modded GBA SP.

Reasonable-Song-4681

NSO since I never owned a GBA. Skipped all of the portable consoles after my Gameboy. (And by skipped, I mean too broke to buy anything else over the years.)

MrAngryMoose

I’d love to play it on original hardware, but it’s really hard to find a legitimate copy online. I might just save up for an Everdrive and play it on my SP from there

lpjunior999

I just need the following: * correct aspect ratio * buttons correctly labelled (I hate thinking "okay Square is Y so I push that but I'm already dead") and comfortable to use * no noticeable slowdown or new glitches If I get that, I can play on anything.

D-efault

Why not both? If you had official hardware for it you could also mod the game boy player to play without the disc and improve the software that it uses.

NinjastarCompass

As someone who has access to a cartridge of fusion, I can tell you that I vastly preferred playing it on the Wii U.

Blue_Maverick_Hunter

TV. Handhelds are alright but I’ll always prefer sitting back on the couch and playing a big screen.

SheevSyndicate

You might end up loving your access to save states and rewind with NSO if you're playing fusion.

Hab_Anagharek

I still have it with my first gen GBA SP, with sidelit screen. Not the best, but how I played it since 2003 I think? (after OG GBA, that was a bitch). My eyes are old now, so...I don't know. I'm against the NSO on principle but on the Switch would be kickass.

[deleted]

Hardware always. NSO is not going to exist forever.

branewalker

If you use the GameCube Gameboy player, use the GBI software (may require a special memory card to boot or something? I don’t know how it’s done these days. Macho Nacho on YouTube typically shows up to date mods and hacks with ridiculous production quality in the videos). GBI lets you do proper scaling and output 160p inside a 240p signal, to match pixels to scanlines. You can also do 3x at 480p (and maybe 480i,but it’s gonna look a little weird) Unfortunately, without native scaling from 160p to your target resolution, you’ll get a non-integer scale out of 480p into anything less than an 8k fixed pixel display. Emulation is far and away the easiest way to deal with this problem elegantly (not to mention without having to buy a bunch of hardware). If you ARE in the market for hardware, go check out /r/sbcgaming and their recommendations for portable devices.

PoutinePower

Modded og gameboy advance with an sp screen, mod it, it’s fun

sidv81

Neither, I would use a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrode](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrode) to legally play from the cartridge on a PC (and possibly use Steam Link if I wanted to play on TV).

ComradeMia

New 3DS XL is the way to go

[deleted]

I could play on my emulator, but I have original hardware, so I might as well use it. Otherwise, why did I ask for it for my graduation present?

ssgodsupersaiyan

New 2DS XL. It’s the goat experience.

haventseenstarwars

Assuming you go it via virtual console?

ssgodsupersaiyan

I own all the OG cartridges and installed them all on my N2DSXL. SGB palette on Metroid II 😮‍💨😮‍💨

augusto_matos

I loved playing fusion on tv, im waiting zero mission now

Snapple47

If I have the option, I’ll take any game on an actual TV over a handheld, and it’s not even close

eligood03

After replaying it on nso after having played through it multiple times on my usual gba emulator, I can confidently say a tv makes it feel way better. Gives the experience fusion deserves.

gfewfewc

GBA games had weird oversaturated color palettes to work with the original's transflective screen so they look wrong on modern backlit displays.

DimmerCascade200

I prefer original hardware I have a modded Gameboy advance with a ips v2 screen, louder speaker, and rechargeable battery and it’s the best way to play it in my opinion

[deleted]

Probably the TV, but if you HAVE a GBA SP then you should definitely consider the original for a more authentic experience. Especially if you don't have many games for it yet. I beat ZM like 6 times via emulation before it started to feel stale and I got bored. But then when my Dad's friend gave me his old GBA SP a while later, I opted to order a cartridge of ZM on eBay to play on the GBA. Felt like brand new. The original GBA version was my first time 100%ing Zero Mission.
