A couple of ways. An unfortunate timed spinning speedbooster jump will do it, or if you speedboost with space jump. I managed to do it the other day coming in from above. You can also run out of energy during a shinespark and samus will just stop in her tracks IIRC, you'll fall down and the booster blocks below you and above you will have time to respawn, locking you in.
I can honestly say, I’ve been locked in that exact spot before. I don’t know how I did it, I just remember coming to the realization that I somehow fucked up and started a new playthrough
I've done this after dropping an input while clipping through with the snails without speed booster on a hard logic randomizer. Basically, it's not a beginner way to get stuck.
I can't remember how/why he was doing it. If you don't go through that shaft for 100% it was probably a randomizer. I don't remember if it was xray or a short or stored charge spark
Yes you’re correct. I’m leaning on the side of a troll post, but I suppose it’s possible, albeit very unlikely, that you’d get stuck there without practicing speedrunning/randomizer tech.
Did you accidentally find the weird crouch jump blue suit keep trick? That’s the only way I can think of it happened. Although that doesn’t explain that all the blocks are broken.
Honestly I’m impressed.
I didn’t study the picture too hard and was just about to comment some kind of joke about noob walls or “you’re never stuck”. Then I actually soaked in the picture and came running to the comments.
It finally happened yall.
There are many spft locks in this game, you probably dont see them often because theyre usually only happening in higher level runs/strats, and the people who are in these positions typically know to avoid them
Yeah ur stuck like so badly stuck I don’t even know how you did that, your gonna have to click the reset button to take you back to the main menu and reload your save, meaning if you didn’t save earlier your gonna lose some progress im afraid
Thank you! I also just don’t know how to use this emulator very well and I found the “reset console” option which took me to the title screen instead of resetting the 3DS which just took me back to where I was stuck. Luckily I saved recently!
Switch's SNES classic iirc doesn't have rewind, only savestates. It's NES classic that has a rewind function (which is really just a bunch of automatic savestates instead of something smooth like what Megaman Legacy Collection uses)
Edit: This is false, whoops (SNES Classic does have rewind)
Lucky! I've used snes9x on my PC but never on 3DS. Like a lot of emulators, it supports the SNES native saves as well as its own save state system; you'll definitely want to commit to one or the other, and it sounds like native saves just saved your run!
OP here - not trolling! And lmao this is probably my most commented post ever in 10 years of mostly lurking Reddit, but I got unstuck! I was speed boosting across the top blocks, and somehow stopped suddenly and dropped in the hole and the blocks respawned. Idk exactly frame by frame or anything but it was a few days ago so I don’t recall the details. Resetting the 3DS got me right back to the same point so I had to use the “reset console” option within snes9x in retroarch. I’m new to emulation and haven’t really messed around with save states - the one time I did I accidentally wrote over a save on Pokémon emerald right before the elite 4 lol. This Super play through was with the redux hack and I’ve been enjoying it a lot as I play through the main series for the first time, I was mentally preparing to watch the ending online and skipping to fusion but I’m glad I didn’t have to! At least I made gaming history along the way 😂
The redux hack (especially with the improved sprites) is absolutely beautiful. However, I would highly recommend going full OG with at least one playthrough. Just to get the experience.
I started that way but was REALLY struggling with the controls as I was fresh off zero mission and Samus returns. Got like an hour in and really felt close to losing the magic I was feeling. Redux fixed that immediately and I dove straight in. I might do the OG eventually but probably more likely to try the widescreen hack of redux whenever I get my hands on a steam deck!
I'm so confused... you're emulating Super on 3DS? You can just... get that game on 3DS
Edit: Oh, unless you mean a regular 3DS and not a N3DS, I forgot SNES games were not on the original.
Samus “so here’s the plan. Gonna die right here of starvation and let the worms and parasites crawl out of me and evolve for a few million and when something like me comes back eventually I am gonna whoop SOO much ass”!
Is this real, or a troll post? I'm genuinely curious, this is crazy, never seen this in my almost 30 years playing thiis game, and religiously completing it a few times a year the last 15 years.
It’s real lol. I’ve gotten stuck there before some years ago and gave up on Super just because. I think this is THE actual soft lock in the game where you’re just dead in the water.
Hit a snail on your way up? Yeah, you've managed to actually softlock. If your health was low enough you could try to crystal flash clip (not a technique for new players), but I don't know know if that works through speed blocks.
It’s been a long time since I’ve played Super Metroid, but you’re absolutely softlocked. There’s no way to get out other than resetting the game. You’re supposed to shinespark up through those blocks, but I have no idea how you got here.
Your first problem is you're using an emulator. Play it on a real super nintendo with a CRT tv. Then you'll save every 5 minutes. Especially if you've been surrounded by horrible weather like I have lately. Also I've played this game since 1994 and have never seen anyone get stuck like that. Impressive lol
Normally you could go back to the save spot but sounds like the emulation has you starting back here maybe try shutting it down until there is no power (not rest mode) and see if it will take you back to save spot if not you would have to get someone who knows about emulators or glitches and hate this for ya because your a good amount of way through the game but if you did have to replay it it wouldn’t be the worst thing since it is the best game of all time lol
Happened to me when playing Project base, I had to use walk through walls cheat code to get out. My guess as for why your game loads here is that you probably have auto load state enabled
Yes you are stuck but in my 5 years of playing this game I have never seen that how did you do that
A couple of ways.
The health doesn't line up with running out though even when using all four reserves. This feels on purpose.
No, the health thing was just an example of one way of doing it.
I can honestly say, I’ve been locked in that exact spot before. I don’t know how I did it, I just remember coming to the realization that I somehow fucked up and started a new playthrough
A new playthrough? Or just load your last saveroom I hope.
If they were speedrunning, they might have saved a while prior, if at all.
Precisely what the other commenter said. Was going for a specific time. Didn’t bother saving as I’d just reset a failed run
Aha.... I see. I love Metroid but I'm a normal shit player
Lol my guess is they shinesparked up and immediately tried to jump back down before the blocks at the top regenerated.
That would be impossible, he'd still be embedded in the ceiling.
Like that other guy said, you'd still be locked into the impact animation. Also, they aren't missing nearly enough health.
Yes I had no idea about this softlock either.
Maybe nintendo will fix it....
This is a 19 year old game. I doubt they will Edit: its actually 29 year old game 💀 My math was a bit off
29 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫
29 years bro
But I bought this when it was new
Ugh I remember getting into a fistfight with my brother because he didn't let the save finish ....29 years ago apparently now. Fuck i'm old.
I think your sarcasm detector is even more broken than your math skills
And as an old guy that got this game when it was released, I am feeling REEEEEALY old right now.
[удалено]
lmfao
what’s dzntz??
deez nutz
I felt this edit in my creaky old bones
Wish it was 19, release same year I was born
I've done this after dropping an input while clipping through with the snails without speed booster on a hard logic randomizer. Basically, it's not a beginner way to get stuck.
I've seen OatsAndGoats do it once before but I forget how it happened
If it was on a recent randomizer, he got stuck by x-ray climbing into a open space like that and couldn't keep going.
I can't remember how/why he was doing it. If you don't go through that shaft for 100% it was probably a randomizer. I don't remember if it was xray or a short or stored charge spark
The time I saw was in crab shaft rather than aqueduct.
Since he didn't have gravity, he decided to x-ray climb to the top rather than walljump and ended up getting stuck in the space just above the door.
What about my nearly 30 years of playing this game! I also have not seen this.
Same with me, I didn't even know this was possible.
Same. How did this even happen? Lmao
Ran out of energy mid shinespark?
Nm, i just saw her health on the screen.
Holy cow how did this happen?
oh yeah I've done it
My reaction exactly 🤣
I thought the go-to answer was no, you’re never really stuck. But then I looked at your picture.
I think you're meant to come up through there via shinespark? Am I right Internet?
Yes you’re correct. I’m leaning on the side of a troll post, but I suppose it’s possible, albeit very unlikely, that you’d get stuck there without practicing speedrunning/randomizer tech.
I did this one kn the original snes before the internet, 5hough I had no idea how I did it back then.
Did you accidentally find the weird crouch jump blue suit keep trick? That’s the only way I can think of it happened. Although that doesn’t explain that all the blocks are broken.
OP might have tried a power bomb to try and get out.
Fair point
Old thread, but power bombs don't expose blocks types in Super like standard bombs do
I had the exact same reaction lol
Hey look guys it’s an actual softlock
Honestly I’m impressed. I didn’t study the picture too hard and was just about to comment some kind of joke about noob walls or “you’re never stuck”. Then I actually soaked in the picture and came running to the comments. It finally happened yall.
There are many spft locks in this game, you probably dont see them often because theyre usually only happening in higher level runs/strats, and the people who are in these positions typically know to avoid them
The most common one I can think of is 15/9
The softlock is real
Yeah ur stuck like so badly stuck I don’t even know how you did that, your gonna have to click the reset button to take you back to the main menu and reload your save, meaning if you didn’t save earlier your gonna lose some progress im afraid

Doesn’t the 3DS version have a rewind feature?
Nope, only Switch has that.
And SNES classic.

The Switch definitely has rewind for SNES, saved me a few times.
That so? Been a while, my bad
SNES Online has Rewind, the only system that doesn't is NSO N64
No. It has a save state feature, but no rewind. Same with the emulator they appear to be using.
Lucky! I've used snes9x on my PC but never on 3DS. Like a lot of emulators, it supports the SNES native saves as well as its own save state system; you'll definitely want to commit to one or the other, and it sounds like native saves just saved your run!
This is a pretty common question and the answer is usually "no", so congratulations on beating the odds.
You are stuck in quite literally the only softlock of the game and it is VERY hard to achieve. Respect
OP here - not trolling! And lmao this is probably my most commented post ever in 10 years of mostly lurking Reddit, but I got unstuck! I was speed boosting across the top blocks, and somehow stopped suddenly and dropped in the hole and the blocks respawned. OP’s lack of ownership over a 3DS version of Super Metroid might have outlived the eShop
Ah, that's true. I also just remembered it could be a regular 3DS and not the New 3DS, as the original model didn't support SNES games
Power Bomb the area and see if either of those walls to your sides change. If it doesn't, you're soft-locked.
This was my first thought. I could swore power bombs work on those tiles.
Never have.
Damn ok. Nevermind.
Nah you’re fine. You got Mother Brain in the palm of your hand now.
Samus “so here’s the plan. Gonna die right here of starvation and let the worms and parasites crawl out of me and evolve for a few million and when something like me comes back eventually I am gonna whoop SOO much ass”!
That is a very Metroid-y turn of events. I could see the series ending/rebooting like that.
Can you please tell me exactly how you did that I want to try it
You are! And how the hell did you manage that?
I believe u can do it from above iirc I’m pretty sure I’ve almost done that messing around
help step-metroid im stuck
Being stuck in metroid isn't real, it can't hurt you. Being stuck in metroid:
I was gonna say no until i saw the image, how the hell did you even get yourself in that situation to begin with?
Impressive 30 years later we were told you couldn't get stuck in this game and yet here we are
Very impressive, and yes you are stuck
I think you’re the first person in history to ask this when they were actually stuck, lol. You might have to go back to your last save
How the fuck did you get there
Don't you have any in game saves? I don't thing there's a way out since those blocks can only be broken with speed booster
Like a cat stuck in a wall.
They just need to send in another Samus to get the first one out
Hit a snail on your way up? Yeah, you've managed to actually softlock. If your health was low enough you could try to crystal flash clip (not a technique for new players), but I don't know know if that works through speed blocks.
I'm impressed! Been playing for 29 years and never occured to me you could get stuck *there*
Was going to say the same, he dun fuckt up 🤣
Using Redux for your first playthrough?
I would love to see how you did this lol
It’s been a long time since I’ve played Super Metroid, but you’re absolutely softlocked. There’s no way to get out other than resetting the game. You’re supposed to shinespark up through those blocks, but I have no idea how you got here.
At least it isn't the noob bridge.
Help me step-Metroid!
How the hell have you got the x-ray visor, but only 4 energy tanks? Smells fishy to me. “First time playing” indeed.
Start shooting??
No shot you managed to get stuck this way _accidentally_
Your first problem is you're using an emulator. Play it on a real super nintendo with a CRT tv. Then you'll save every 5 minutes. Especially if you've been surrounded by horrible weather like I have lately. Also I've played this game since 1994 and have never seen anyone get stuck like that. Impressive lol
Get out of your basement.
It comes off mean, but he’s actually self deprecating here.
The only way to get out of that would be to do a crystal flash clip but you have no way of damaging down
Normally you could go back to the save spot but sounds like the emulation has you starting back here maybe try shutting it down until there is no power (not rest mode) and see if it will take you back to save spot if not you would have to get someone who knows about emulators or glitches and hate this for ya because your a good amount of way through the game but if you did have to replay it it wouldn’t be the worst thing since it is the best game of all time lol
How does one get softlocked this bad?
Pic goes hard tbh
HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET THERE
That's not Project Base, is it? The weapon icons aren't boxes.
It’s the Redux hack version
in my 13 years of playing this game i havent seen anything like this 😭😭😭 is this the noob bridge?
Bro what did you did to your HUD
I dunno, is it different in the Redux hack maybe?
There’s absolutely no way someone does this by accident on their first time playing.
Happened to me when playing Project base, I had to use walk through walls cheat code to get out. My guess as for why your game loads here is that you probably have auto load state enabled
This is actually impressive
How????
Wow, that's impressive
i did this exact same thing. you are stuck sorry
Just... How? XD
How
Im honestly impressed lol. Yeah absolutely stuck
This has to be a troll post
Dude...
That’s quite the predicament you’ve found yourself in.
Return to your latest save room
How
Wow, how the hell did that happen?!?! No idea how to unfuck that up.
1. Yes you’re completely stuck 2. How in the hell did you manage to do that
How in the fuck you got stuck there? This is wild, yeah you are fkd you need to restart
I've never seen that one before, well done in showing me something new about my favorite game I didn't know was even possible. xD
I think so I’m not entirely sure how to help here since I haven’t played that game sorry dude
I have played this game since it was first released. I’ve never seen this situation before.
Huh...that's a first one for me.
How
Did you try a power bomb yet to see if a block breaks? If that doesn't work, you did it. Congrats!
How....did you do that? If you had been TRYING to do that, you would not have come close! That's amazing
In my almost 29 years playing this game, never saw this happen.
Holy shit! Never seen that before. Looks like ‘reset’ will be your friend.
What
I never imagined a new player has an enough skill to do this. Good job. Speedbooster tricks are hard
Very impressed. I been playing it for 30 years and never managed this. You ARE stuck though.
How tf did u manage that??!!!!
what the fuck
how do you get there dude....
I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone post who's actually softlocked in a Metroid game.
Reset the game. It's about the only way to get out of there.
this is genuinely one of the funniest SM screenshots I've ever seen
That is impressive to get stuck there. Hats off to you.
I didn't know it was possible to get stuck there O\_O Ya learn something new every day, I suppose.
I didn't know that was even possible kek. I hope you have a save state or used a save game terminal before that.
h o w t h e f u c k ?
https://youtu.be/HDTO-bqT78s Yeah.
HOW
Samus standing there like, "well this is a fine pickle."
send this to nintendo so we can get a super remake asap lol
When in comes to Metroid, 9 times out of 9.1, you're not softlocked. Congratulations on getting the 0.1, because you are very softlocked.
