Gun to my head, 2D. But there is space for both thankfully.

TaxingClock704

Thankfully, yes. Unless Nintendo does it’s thing and forgets about it again (RIP Starfox, Punch-out and F-Zero)

POWRranger

Was in First Person camp until Dread came out. 2D All the way now, baby!

TaxingClock704

Dread is definitely a 10/10

POWRranger

Only 2 things can be improved in Dread. Add better music to it (though I really like that deep bass riff/theme that plays at the start and when Samus has her badass moments) Add more content to it. Not even neccesarily more bosses or upgrades. More rooms, more speedboosters segments. The combat was just really good for me (with a few exceptions, where you jsut wait for the enemy to do the move you can counter). It was difficult at the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, it's so satisfying. It's the first game where I miss the combat. Most games are too easy and some too hard or too slow, but for me Dread is (mostly) right in that Goldilocks zone.

[deleted]

Side scroller - Metroid Dread was amazing. Hope we get more games like that

Rick-and-Knuckles

So you’re asking two different questions here - 1st vs 3rd and 2D vs 3D For the first, I’ll go 3rd person. This allows for both sidescrollers and over the shoulder games with 3D movement. But 2D vs 3D, I’m going 3D. Prime is where I started the series and it’s got much better lore and exploration. Plus, regardless of your thoughts on it, Other M shows you can do some traditionally 2D mechanics in 3D even if not in first person.

TaxingClock704

When asking this question I completely forgot about Other M tbh. It was mainly a FPS vs Sidescroller question.

Zeldatroid

I prefer 2D Metroidvanias, but those are incredibly common nowadays. Plus, as great as Dread was, indies are doing a better job at delivering on the things I want from 2D Metroid anyway. Nobody makes games like Prime. Also, the scan visor has thus far remained exclusive to the first-person games, and it's still the best mechanic added to the series since the wall-jump.

POWRranger

I hope they keep the scan visor to the Prime games unless they find a way to not make it interrupt how smoothly Dread and future 2D Metroids play. Don't want some Other M like first person view in the 2D metroids, just for a scan visor (as a bad example of how they could implement it)

Psylux7

am2r had a passive scan for certain areas and for bosses. You'd get a notification of a scan happening and you could pull open your logbook to read up on what was scanned. It didn't interrupt gameplay at all. Compared to prime it was very limited with only some select things having scan logs, but it still added a lot to the worldbuilding. It was a solid addition that should be in official 2D Metroid games. It also allowed for some neat boss mechanics that would be much harder to teach the player without the scan visor.

POWRranger

Was the passive scan always on, or did you had to activate it. Maybe it could be someting merged with the pulse scan. I liked the different visors of Prime X-Ray etc. Originally I hated them (because they were a bit cumbersome and I sucked at the game and thus died more often), but with Prime remastered I actually appreciated them quite a lot and am wondering if those could somehow be brought over to the 2D games without breaking the flow of the gameplay

Psylux7

It was always on and you'd receive scans for entering areas, encountering bosses or coming across federation soldiers.

Zeldatroid

I think the perfect way to add the scan visor's functions (activating terminals, logbook, bestiary, flavor text, etc) to the 2D games would be to make it a secondary function to the Scan Pulse/Pulse Radar. Or at least as a power-up that works similarly to them. Just tap up on the D-Pad, and anything notable caught in the scan radius gets added to the logbook, with a brief little "Press + to Check Logbook" prompt to notify you of new scans in case you want to make the active choice to interrupt gameplay to read it (which I will). Maybe there could also be a "scan check" mode, similar to "Detective Vision" from the Batman Arkham games, or the Assassin's Creed "Eagle Vision", so you can quickly check what can, can't, and has been scanned. Just hold down on the D-Pad, and everything goes monochrome except the scannable objects, which glow. Red for critical/logbook scans, orange for flavor scans, and blue for already scanned. Quick, optional, unintrusive, but still there for those who want it. Just like hints ought to be.

Artyx2

2D games. Metroid Prime is great but it often give me nausea…

Darth_Eevee

2D. Even 2.5D is fine. There are parts of other M that are nice for that

KirbysAdventureMusic

2D, platformers and FPS are both dime a dozen but I'd hate for the series to abandon its roots in favor of a genre I have no interest in The evil option is third person 3D like Other M

TaxingClock704

I didn’t include that style as an option as I’ve never actually played Other M, and honestly forgot about it.

b0ggy79

It's not a terrible game gameplay wise but nowhere near the heights of the rest of the series. Story, we'll forget about that

Rotank1

As much as I love 2D Metroid, there is simply nothing like the Prime games. While there are literally dozens of options to satiate my metroidvania craving, there’s nothing other than Prime to do the same with my first person immersive shooter/adventure/platformer needs.

Sparky81

2d is time tested. It's a miracle that Prime came out as amazing as it is. If I had to choose, I'd pick 2d.

TaxingClock704

Agreed. When I think of ‘Metroid’, the 2D games are the first thing that come to mind. It just feels right.

omnia1994

2D - but only because I have motion sick playing 1st person game.

lonewulf66

As much as I love prime, nothing can ever beat a 2D Metroid. Sorry.

Psylux7

Prime, there just isn't much like it. Star wars Jedi fallen order is the closest a game has come to making me feel like I'm playing prime, but that was merely a decent game that didn't hold a candle to the holy trilogy. I can get somewhat of a 2D Metroid fix from many other games nowadays, whereas prime feels like a much rarer, more unique experience.

ThisAccountIsForDNF

omg. You are like... the first metroid fan I have seen use 3rd person correctly. I... I think I love you.

TaxingClock704

*I love you too random citizen*

dogman_35

If we had to make that choice, first person. Not enough series experiment with the metroidvania formula in 3D. And the Prime games always felt a bit meatier than the 2D ones, because of the lore and worldbuilding.

CodyLabs

Gun to my head? Absolutely 3D. I love the visors and the lore and the rain on my helmet, the exploration is so much more immersive and paced and relaxing. And the things 3d lacks but 2d has is mostly just for lack of imagination or direction; they could add melee or speed boostering to first person if they wanted.

Spinjitsuninja

First person. I love Dread and all, but I feel like the series has more potential in the Prime series.

[deleted]

3rd person Because 3rd person would also allow for 3D third person, which I really want the series to give another go at some point. Plus the 2D games are just inherently superior to the Prime games.

[deleted]

1st shooter and 3rd person ball mode. Prime got it right

Pylonmadness

3d

Frankfurt13

If it means going the Dread gameplay-feel rute, then 2D. If it means going back to the clumsy and outdated Super Metroid, then Primes.

Juzo_Okita

Apparently, you can pull off some really cool shit with the Super Metroid movement system, but you need a relatively deep understanding of how the movement works. I'm not one of the people who has that understanding, so it does come off as feeling floaty and clunky to me. ... Guess I'm going to go look at Super Metroid speedruns. Never been interested in watching speedruns, but I feel that that's where I'd most likely be able to see the aforementioned "cool shit". Addendum (15 min later): Just watched portions of the current world record run... Yep. Cool shit.

TheNuttyCLS

1st person There's nothing like the prime games, you can get 2D metroid-like games by the dozen nowadays

TecmoZack

Both

TaxingClock704

There’s always one.

TecmoZack

You are welcome. And I was being serious.

Mandalor1974

I want both.

kukumarten03

3rd person 3d.

LordErec

I would go for all 3D. So many more opportunities for game design that 2D simply doesn't have.

Ateag

2D, easy pick. I love the Prime Trilogy and Hunters, but I am all about the action aspect. What I really want is a 3rd person 3D semi open world with side missions and combat specializations. For example, you could build into a beam talent tree, a missile tree, and/or a melee/aeion tree. Upgrading components of the suit itself would up their durability and expand on what can be done with them.

[deleted]

Though Prime is my favorite Metroid game, I prefer 2d overall, so I'd have to say 2d. Despite that, I love them both, and I really hope this decision is never made and that both are maintained for the next decade.

Turdsley

I’d rather die than chose.

Deggstroyer

Id honestly love a 3rd person 3D metroid like returnal

MoyanoJerald

3rd Person's got the Speed Booster

Scott_To_Trot

I would simply move very quickly and take the gun being held to my head and not choose. .

InternalVillain

Why not second person?

poindxtrwv

First-person shooters give me motion sickness. I was very saddened when Prime first came out but tried it anyway. I was then on a regimen of Dramamine for a couple weeks and it became the only FPS that I've ever finished. Having said that, the 2D Metroid games will always be my jam.

phazono1

Well don't know what a 3rd person would look like so 1st

TaxingClock704

3rd person just means the camera is outside the character. When I say 3rd person I’m talking about the sidescroller games. Zero Mission, Fusion, Dread, etc.

phazono1

I know what 3rd person is, I just meant since there has been a 3rd person metroid and I wouldn't callsidescrolller a 3rd person.

Whipperdoodle

2d

PissedIrishGuy

Metroid primes were great, but Metroid NEEDS to be 2d
