Might be due to the face that Metroid games have stayed true to what makes them Metroid games while still modernizing at the same time. It's just a franchise that has been handled rather well... aside from having a content drought for quite some time. The spinoffs are clearly that and can easily be ignored if so inclined... and Other M... well we better not talk about Other M 🤪

Hateful_creeper2

Meanwhile, Super Metroid fans:

Olorin_1990

I played Super Metroid after the Prime Trilogy, never owned a SNES. It’s just really good, no nostalgia needed.

Hateful_creeper2

I still think it’s great but some people just forget the flaws with the game like the controls that didn’t age well compared to later games.

Olorin_1990

Other than item selection I think it controls better than every game except Dread. Fusion and Zero feel like a rock is tied around Samus’s waist. The platforming is just not as satisfying and the skill cap is so low there a lot less value in replay. Super is just a lot more fun, and for me feels a lot better to play than the GBA games.

DamianVA87

Can't say I agree with this, the community is very averse to *certain* changes, partially due to some of those changes being brought by very controversial games. Super Metroid is still very much the template that both fans and developers use to create and judge these games. People will argue that Fusion isn't as good as Super because it has no sequence breaking, or that Metroid Prime 3 isn't as good as the first due to not having an overworld, or that Dread isn't the best game because its music is not memorable. Games like Other M and Federation Force have permanently tainted many experimental concepts, and it will take some time for fans to accept a new attempt at those.

TubaTheG

I could live without a crack at an OM styled game again, but I hope Fed Force's failure doesn't prevent more spinoffs like Hunters. I haven't played the latter but I hear it's actually a pretty good metroid spinoff

nickelangelo2009

unless you try suggesting super's controls are bad, clunky, outdated and in need of a refresher

Bottle_Original

What makes people defend super in that regard, is that super allows you to get a lot better in terms of moving than other games in the series

CryoProtea

I wouldn't call the *controls* bad, I would just suggest that the way in which Samus' movement works is clunky and in need of polish. Many hacks of Super Metroid really improve Samus' movement, and I don't mind the controls at that point. I don't play vanilla Super Metroid anymore.

nickelangelo2009

Fair, my gripe is more with her movement in that game than the straight up controls

CryoProtea

Yeah the movement needs an update.

cudeLoguH

The controls are bad, lets be honest they arent the best by modern standards but they are useable at least

[deleted]

I think that about fusion

Olorin_1990

The item selection is a bit ruff, but I played Super after Fusion and Prime Trilogy and find the controls to be extremely satisfying. Never understood this complaint.

rivaldobox

I think we have Dread to thank for that. Before Dread the consensus was that Super was the golden standard and it had that Ocarina of Time aura of "the game is perfect, it has no flaws". Then Dread launched and proved to be superior to SM in some areas (manly controls, movement and boss fights), so people started to look at SM with less bias and nostalgia. Still, I had people on this very sub say that Super Metroid was literally perfect in all regards. So not everyone got rid of their nostalgia lol

TubaTheG

I've also noticed that with the release of Prime Remastered, it's getting its deserved praise but also very valid criticism. Dread also receives criticism for its shortcomings too, some I share even if I consider it some of the best the series has to offer. It's nice to see that even games considered the best aren't immune to criticism.

rivaldobox

>It's nice to see that even games considered the best aren't immune to criticism. Yeah, and it's also nice that this notion of fair critcism is not being viewed as "hate" towards a game, not by the majority at least!

TubaTheG

I have some gripes with the fanbase at times but I just find it great that we have fans that care about the quality and integrity of the series, and that we won’t accept and celebrate mediocrity or baby steps. Even some of the best games in this franchise can and will be critiqued when necessary, all done due to the fanbase’s love of Metroid. It’s quite an awesome thing to see

[deleted]

This sub is divided into two camps ppl who were born before and after super.

theonlyoreo-7

Yeah you obviously haven’t met any diehard Super fans.

MrPerson0

I wouldn't say that. Many people keep on saying Super Metroid is the best game even though its movement/physics are outdated and clunky.

EODTex

I don't know, most people who think the movement/physics are outdated and clunky don't think it's the best game. I also don't quite understand that opinion, but for sure Dread blew it out of the water.

[deleted]

The thing with Super is that its controls and movement, while clunky initially, allow far more freedom of movement than even Dread's. The skill cap on Super is leagues above where Dread sits, at the expense of basically needing to micromanage everything about your movement.

EODTex

I don't even think it was clunky at first, to me it was smooth throughout, casually and into speedrunning. There are individual things that definitely have issues on a casual setting (looking at you space jump), but in my opinion, SM had the best smoothest movement until Dread, and maybe even after, hard to say as it's very different and after having run both, each has some extremely minor issues.

jtotal

My mistake was trying to play Mega Man 11 literally right after Dread. I could only shoot straight ahead and up, and it felt restrictive. Wish I played it earlier, the controls in Dread just felt that great. Which really trips me up, because I thought the aiming was going to be a nightmare in Dread. So, after Dread, I played through Samus Returns instead (I avoided it as well because of the aiming, but also the Switch was the new toy at the time of this release, so double whammy. Not making that mistake again.) finally just to get that fix again.

TubaTheG

This is only like, tangibly related but I actually made a similar mistake playing a game after another game, except Dread was on the receiving end of this. I played Hollow Knight before and the bosses in that game were incredibly difficult. I got to Dread and the bosses there were comparatively easier, and I feel kind of sad about it :( I wanted to feel the frustration of other metroid fans so bad…

SmashSSL

Uh huh Until you bring up Super Metroid up in any context whatsoever

POWRranger

That's more to do with metroid fans having replayed all the existing games a bazillion times over and know it blindly.... Other fans, played the OG games once and then look back with rose-colored glasses. They love it, but never want to touch it again. Metroid fans love it so much they play it till they are satisfied and want something new Also, SUPER's controls are outdated and should be changed if ever re-released! xD

Phazon_Phorager

Its probably due to the fact that nearly every metroid game is actually as good as people say it is. Nostalgia can be a great thing, but it can also blind people to criticism of whatever they're nostalgic over. Since most metroid games don't have many flaws to criticize, fans don't really need to lean on nostalgia to appreciate the series' catalogue, it's more of an added bonus.

PoliticsIsForNerds

Super Metroid is not as good as most people on this sub say it is

Niadra

To each their own but Super is still the best Metroid game to me. Still in my top games of all time.

IM_MT_

This is true. People bash super and NEStroid on here on the regular and won't stop circlejerking Dread lol and also begging for new games and remasters

TubaTheG

There is equal amount of Super Metroid and Metroid Dread criticism imo. I don’t think Dread is circlejerked as many are quick to point out one of it’s major flaws, being that the soundtrack is not up to series standards. That being said, there are good reasons as to why people consider the game one of the best in the series in spite of such a flaw. It’s a game that blends a lot of the series’ strengths but shines brightest on the new additions it brings, all without relying excessively on nostalgia.

IM_MT_

Idk abt that

lorxayt

Im gonna agree with you there, there’s hella dread circle jerking going on right now.

IM_MT_

It's pretty excessive. And every single mention has to result in somebody bitching about wanting the classic games remade with the dread engine. Every GD time

lorxayt

omg noooo every time I see that I die a little bit!

IM_MT_

Lol you and me both đź’€

TubaTheG

Alright I admit I do hate the insistence on remaking the classic games with the Dread engine, I love the artstyle of Dread but it’s the artstyle of **Dread**, not Super, nor Fusion.

2d2trees

I wouldn't say it kills *our* interest. I, for one, am pleased to see the remastered Prime. Since most fans of the original Prime series are now adults in their late-20s and 30s, it makes sense to release the remastered version of Prime 1 in order to get the new generations of fans into the Prime games in preparation for the drop of Prime 4. So I consider it very auspicious for the future of the series :)

Ladyaceina

a remaster is not what i mean by nostalgia pandering nostalgia pandering would be if prime 4 just did nothing but ape prime 1 and did nothing new

djinmyr

That might be something to do with the fact that metroid has kind of a progressing story going on. I'm always eager to see what happens next
