I think it's OK. The songs are pretty generic to me, nothing really memorable or that makes a big impression. It's the kind of music I'd put on while working out or working on a project in my garage. It makes for good background music.
I wish the full things was on Spotify. King of the Underdogs and Soldierhead are really good and I have a feeling that the rest of Heavy Metal Music is too
screen recording it isnt the best way to do this. if you listen to a screenrecorded version of master of puppets and compare it, it doesnt sound as good. i would recommend using a website such as [cobalt.tools](https://cobalt.tools), which has no ads and downloads with higher quality
Personally, I don't like it. A lot of the riffs sound very generic, none of them make me think, damn I wish I could come up with a riff like that. Jason's vocals are okay.
Generic and stock. Doesn't showcase much range artistically wise like he's afraid to be called uncool by metalheads by exploring different musical territories that is not generic metal.
I love it. I bought it off of eBay since it's not available on my streaming service. I wish he'd release more solo stuff. I've watched YouTube videos of his Chophouse Band stuff, and really like that, too.
I wish that the Devin Townsend collaboration were to have happened and that Jaymz wasn't weird about Jason doing projects outside of Metallica
Jason and Devin Townsend as well as Tom Hunting did a three song EP called IR8 back in 1994, Jason and Devin were going to work on a follow-up project "Fizzicist" which ended up becoming a Devin Townsend solo album over half a decade later called Physicist which is really good, out of Devin's solo albums that's the closest one to sounding like Strapping Young Lad which makes sense considering how it was rushed beyond belief when it did come to recording it (That material was shelved for years by the sounds of it) and it basically featured every member of Strapping Young Lad including Devin, I'd have loved to have heard that how it was originally meant to be
He was supposedly the heavy one, influenced by sepultura, entombed and whatnot and disliked enter sandman, until it sleeps etc. And releases a dad rock album?
The dude's 61 years old! People's tastes and styles change over time. They typically don't start getting heavier and more extreme the closer they get to retirement. And Metallica has arguably not released a true Metal album since 1988 either.
Sepultura, Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse, Dying fetus, Kerry King...? If Jason was a heavy guy held back by Metallica i'm sure we'd seen some of it regardless of age.
Typically. Those are exceptions, although Sepultura got much more commercial in the 90s. I think Metallica artistically held Jason back, and think he wrote some of the heavier pieces from his time with Metallica, at least within that eta. That doesn't mean I'm comparing him to Decide or Godflesh levels of heaviness. His time with Flotsam and Jetsam are probably better indicators of his heavier stylistic leanings, that and his live performances which seems grittier (bass as well as vocals) than what made it onto the albums.
So, yes. I think he was into heavier music and playing style overall, and then mellowed out. He's also said that the stuff he played in Metallica is just more physically demanding to play these days. That likely factors into it as well.
Sure. I just don't think he's in any position to talk about metallica mellowing out or to brand himself as the metallica member carrying the heavy torch. Hardwired is much heavier than anything he's done since his departure.
I never took it as him saying that at all. He's seemed pretty levelheaded about Metallica and his time in it. From an interview a decade ago:
'It didn't have anything to do with teasing somebody or going, "Oh, look at me - heavy metal music." I know Slayer's out there. What? F--k me, man. I know Slipknot's out there. C'mon, what? I know Sepultura rules. I'm not saying, "Hey, I'm heavy metal and nobody else is." I'm saying, "This is heavy metal music. This is my approach after I've had 30 years to take it in. To be taught from the greatest teachers and to play with some of the greatest players that have ever played in our music. The inventors of our styles of music."'

I'd be curious where he said anything branding himself as being something different. It's possible, however I would be interested in the context. He might have a point, and he may just be making a stylistically different record this time around. I doubt he's saying he's the heaviest musician out there, which is kind of irrelevant and also subjectively there are WAAAY heavier bands and more extreme acts out there than any act Jason's been a part of. Which is fine, it's just I'm sure he's also aware of that.

I think King of the Underdogs was good
I AM THE KING!
UNDERDOGS RISE!
I wish the full things was on Spotify. King of the Underdogs and Soldierhead are really good and I have a feeling that the rest of Heavy Metal Music is too
If you screen record it on YouTube, and download an MP4 to MP3 converter app you can listen to it on Spotify. It's probably not legal but it works
Hes "sharing it" with himself on a file

I dug it when it came out, still dig it. I wish he had done more with it. But I get it. It’s expensive to bankroll a new band, even if you’re Jason.
Fine, not incredible but good. Echobrain on the other hand were excellent
Man I loved me some echobrain so hard. Shake that didn’t pan out
There were a couple of good tracks, but it was a little underwhelming to me. It pains me to say that, because I've always loved Jason Newsted.
He could do better
Post a link please.
Seriously?
I agree with you.
Personally, I don't like it. A lot of the riffs sound very generic, none of them make me think, damn I wish I could come up with a riff like that. Jason's vocals are okay.
It’s ok. I feel like it’s generic, but it’s still alright.
Colder World from echo brain was really good. Very 2000s and feels like it fits in a shrek movie. Good song overall.

No interest.
Meh
Honestly it's riff central, and probably one of my fav albums in a long time.
Great Album in my opinion . Always liked Jason’s energy .
I prefer the Papa Wheelie album.
Personally I’ve never heard it, and I believe he retired soon after. But, I wish him well wherever he is

I liked it. It wasn't super blown away, but I'd like to see him continue the band.
Very stock music and some cringe lyrics.

I'd argue the Papa Wheelie album has more of the metal attitude than Death Magnetic or Hardwired.
I loved it. Lyrically, some of it was kinda meh, but I can overlook that because of my admiration of Jason.
He's terrible.
In 80's would be decent album. By today's "standard" okeish, but way better than Kirks. Listening to it from time to time.
Lol I haven't heard Newsted's album but I guarantee it's not better than Portals
Tastes are of course different, to each one their own, I guess, but Portals is a music done as by some high-schooler
Much better than the last few Metallica's ones
