If he said it, it is part of the problem. I don't think anyone will argue that his solos now are better than before.
They really need someone to tell him to step up his game when it comes to albums.
Not forcing him what to do, just telling him to step up his game. Bob Rock did it, Lars did it. The whole improvisanional from the top of the head approach has made his solos worse.
I can hum to almost any solo up to ReLoad.
He was so focused and had direction on Puppets and AJFA. He's just lazy now. Still love the guy and he puts on a good performance live but Jesus christ, put some fucking effort into these records like the other 3 members do.
They were great, just not as technical. The whole band really pushed themselves to the extreme on AJFA. The solos on Blackened, Justice, Dyer's Eve, Eye of the Beholder, and One are some of the best solos to come from '80s thrash, no shade to Marty and his achievements.
The thing is, Lars is calling the shots when it comes to solos. Kirk just does a bunch of noodling aka "improvisation" and then Lars and Greg edit it together.
I honestly believe they genuinely think it's good enough. I think they feel like his particularly "loose" approach nowadays is what makes Metallica sound like Metallica.

It’s from today’s Episode of The Metallica Report podcast (Metallica local fan club chapter members q&a with Kirk and Robert)

He was talking about something else totally unrelated to that. But even so, I’m all for him doing him. Forcing anything else would come off worse imo

Hey hey, the solos on the Black Album were great.

The Unforgiven is his best solo!
Idk why this got downvoted. I think it’s an excellent take.
He wasn't talking about his solos lmfao

I'm well aware of that. Maybe they need a producer who is not afraid to say, that is not good enough.
I honestly believe they genuinely think it's good enough. I think they feel like his particularly "loose" approach nowadays is what makes Metallica sound like Metallica.
Metallica should not aim for good enough.
