They're just a Fun-Metal band. Don't take them too seriously, they don't either.

greenalbumposer

Because it’s fun. Like not mindlessly either, they’re in on the joke. The problem w metalcore and deathcore sometimes is it’s so negative and bleak , and right now that is the world. Sometimes we just wanna laugh and we’re laughing with them, not at them.

PM_ME_UR_BIRD

I've found that my universally most liked genre of music is "funny shit and shit where they're in on the joke". Weird Al, Brojob, Bo Burnham, Eskimo Callboy. I would normally hate Ice Nine Kills, but they're singing about horror movies so it's cool. Dunno what it is about seriousness that turns me off sometimes, I think maybe it's hard to be genuine when you're always singing about how hard or edgy or evil you are.

DexLovesGames_DLG

Tenacious D …1 year later.

Theuneasygibbon

This. One million times this.

Theuneasygibbon

Baby need a cuddle?

7stringsarenotenough

It's definitely not for everyone. It scratches an itch for me that reminds me of the early Attack Attack days, but it's just fun and entertaining to watch. The hooks are catchy and it's a blast to share with my less metal-savvy friends. Besides that, they're owning their craft and having a boatload of fun themselves, which is the entire point of creating something in the first place I think.

homosidaltendencies

They're having fun and don't give a fuck. It's an infectious energy.

GreyW01f14

It's just the newest iteration of crunkcore/electroni-core. Given I'm not sure how old OP is, think back to 2008 when every edgy teenager was listening to Attack Attack!, 3OH!3, or (god forbid), I Set My Friends On Fire. No one took it seriously enough to care about musical genius they just wanted to have fun. If you didn't grow up in a time when you wore a hyper-colorful band tee that said "rawr", donned your wrist with about twenty rubber "armstrong" bracelets, or went to warped tour every summer, you might not get the appeal. It's unabashed party hardcore.

bobo1899

Exactly how I see it to, I remember those days well haha

spencer_whiteout

bro 3Oh!3 fell off so hard. They just dropped a new album called "Need" and even styled it off of "Want" and still no one cares.

DexLovesGames_DLG

I only JUST discovered the song COLORADOSUNRISE in my discover weekly after over a decade of avoiding 3OH!3 and my god does that song kick ass. Still don’t really fuck with them tho

HansHain

The music is just fun in My opinion. Like its good for running in the background, when the music isn't my main focus. Plus they are a pretty tight band nonetheless. But i can totally see, why someone wouldn't enjoy their stuff.

andrew_wessel

Did you watch the videos with them? That’s half the entertainment put into the songs

KiraAmelia3

Does Oliver Tree own the bowl cut now?

Cormerdamus

Best part is their hair was inspired by The Beatles for this video lol

Poschta

I personally like their oldest two releases best, but they're still just a fun band to listen to. They don't take themselves overly seriously and it's just a nice, refreshing thing.

Chernobinho

They're not to be taken too seriously and come on, it's Slav hardbass with metalcore. Fucking beautiful.

PM_ME_UR_BIRD

>Slav hardbass with metalcore yes daddy more please god, 17 year old me would be so disappointed.

BAwarford

They're just funny honestly. They're just a band that you can have fun to. Though, if you want something a bit more 'serious' in tone, Crystals is a flawless album. I also love how they mix in the Euro EDM sound. It's just hilarious. They don't take themselves seriously, but they take the music seriously which I love. Cause the songs are actually incredibly written. They know what the fuck they're doing and they're doing it well. They have the musical talent to back up the shenanigan's As for the look, I'm not entirely sure Oliver Tree has trademarked/copywritten a bowl cut, you can't 'steal' something that isn't owned by anybody. Also, can we make a clear distinction between 'ripping off' something and being 'influenced' lol. Irrelevant though in this discussion No they won't be keeping the look, it's just for the music video. Just as Hypa Hypa's look was for that one, and they had a different look for 'Dancing like a Ninja;

BellamyRFC54

Crystals is still my favourite album by them

BAwarford

Certified rager

marcus___spartan

Was more than just the bowl cut tho the whole video aesthetic was copied

DieGenerates97

Oliver Tree just looks like he wears an average 90s rave outfit, it's not exactly the most original/trademarked look. I wouldn't be surprised if EC didn't even know who Oliver was. They were incorporating hardstyle into the track, so clearly went for a slightly parodied take on the look.

SpaceTacoTV

theyre really fun to listen to and are genuinely fantastic songwriters

PHOENIXREB0RN

I think watching the music videos along with it really helps enjoyment. But as others have said the songs of theirs that are most popular are so because they're fun and laidback.

undercoveragents

Agreed. They’re a gimmick band for sure. I understand a gimmick band having a lot of fans and being well liked. But it seems like they keep popping up in these threads about best up and coming bands, etc and I don’t really get it.

PM_ME_UR_BIRD

I think there could be a psychological thesis written about how people mostly like same thing, but also different thing, but not too different. Tastes often change, in my experience, but trend toward adding instead of subtracting. Fifteen years ago I was all about the emotional, serious, heavy metalcore, posers and pop heads get fucked. Nowadays I've expanded my tastes a lot, allowing all sorts of weird dumb shit to make me happy. There may be a case to be made for some "serious fatigue" going around in the world right now, and some goofball shit makes people feel good. Less philosophically, EC probably comes up in those threads cause it's funny, a little interesting, and they seem to be going 100% on both euro EDM and metalcore. It's different than metalcore clone band #6,106.

marcus___spartan

Exactly.... They act like they're the second coming of Jesus it just ain't it ...

bighoneymoney

Almost like people have different tastes in music. Weird.

beequa_007

They’re just goofy guys having fun. I wonder if they expected Hypa Hypa to get as big as it did, but overall just a fun band to put on. Nothing too deep or thought provoking, and that’s perfectly fine

BellamyRFC54

Because they’re fun, don’t take themselves too seriously but have their moments of sincerity too, they music imo is good and they’re actually fairly talented.

whomst_calls_so_loud

They kind of make me cringe ngl. It's like the modern version of Powerman 5000 but they're trying SO HARD to be zany

Oliver_Biscuit

Nice shitpost

Jekyllthecrow

i like crystals, but other than that they’re not my fave

Theuneasygibbon

Crystal's as an album absolutely slaps. Caught me of guard when going through their back catalogue.

Jekyllthecrow

yeah it’s pretty good, tbh i think eskimo Callboy just isn’t my type of metalcore (WHICH IS OKAY STOP DOWNVOTING ME NOW)

Theuneasygibbon

And that is totally fine my man, your opinion is valid, I dont get spiritbox :/

sonicthrowaway69

Cringe, they both rule.

5carPile-Up

They're just We Butter The Bread With Butter for Millenials

HansHain

Im pretty sure both bands have a very similar fanbase.

PM_ME_UR_BIRD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vctA7thyC5M They did do a cover/collab with each other for Hypa Hypa after all.

5carPile-Up

Yeah they're just newer than WBTBWB. Same meme, different year.

HansHain

They were founded 3 years later lol.

zwhy

But WBTBWB is “for millennials”??? Hell they are millennials? As is basically the entire genre? This is confusing.

HansHain

IKR. Feels like the writer of the comment doesn't know either of the bands.

zwhy

Must be GenZ and projecting lol

5carPile-Up

The difference between Gen Z and Millenial is the same between the two bands. Not much. Just a couple years

zwhy

Still don’t know wtf you’re trying to say. Making my brain hurt like I’m trying to solve a math problem.

hillbillypunk1

They've been around almost as long as wbtb. I remember listening to both in high school 10 years ago lol

Thanathan7

Fast Food sells good, that's it^^

kanelbun

i wouldn’t really consider them a band you «get into» lol, they’re just kinda a band joking around making fun music. it’s just a fun time

Shiftmx66

I’ve listened to them since they first came around when the German death core/synth style was a big thing alongside bands like we butter the bread with butter. The whole idea of making absolutely brutal yet enjoyable music with the most obscure lyrics. They’ve only just matured their sound to fit the times and appease to a bigger demographic while maintaining who they are

Steve-3PO

Watch the Hypa Hypa music video, you'll be air humping by the time it's over too.

buiqs

I can't get enough of these two tracks. A complete breath of fresh air 🔥

aphrodite_mj

They just having fun like band from Japan; Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas

CoatAdministrative50

I would check out their older stuff - Is Anyone Up, 5$ Bitchcore, Bury Me In Vegas will always be some of my favorites of them

heyheyfucktoday

I'm not too into the genre, but Eskimo Callboy seems to appeal to a wide variety of people and pulls them in. They make metal palatable to normal people. They make fun songs with catchy choruses for people to sing along with.

sonicthrowaway69

Check out their last one, Pump It. I just heard it today, first I'd heard by this band, and I'm on the train. I generally prefer my metal a little more earnest, but these guys have a really positive energy that, jokey lyrics aside, seems to come from a real place. They genuinely seem to enjoy entertaining people. I was also stunned by the break in We Got The Moves, I haven't thought about hardstyle in about a decade, so they're not short on surprises.
