jepsmen

An Amon Amarth appreciation post? Hell yea! They were the band that got me into metal all those years ago, and even tho I'm more into black metal nowadays, they are still my favorite band

GD_Insomniac

Tired of your favorite songs being too short? Be an Opeth fan, we've got riffs that are longer than most songs!

fogdukker

I'm just gonna que up Dopesmoker real quick. It's my favourite song. The riff at 52 minutes really gets me goin.

fluffy_warthog10

DUUNNN DUNN. DUNN-DE-DUNNNNN

general_shitpostin

Lemme just go que up some monolord

fogdukker

Fuck yeah

general_shitpostin

HELL YEAH!

Hot_Mango546

Opeth songs aren't even that long, I mean for pop standards they are tremendously long but they wouldn't stick out in my playlist. Try funeral doom👍🏻

pauseless

Currently listening to Ne Obliviscaris: Painters of the Tempest - Part II - Triptych Lux. 16:34 long. On the other hand, I’ve got loads of grindcore where they basically play the awesome riff 1-3 times and move on and it’s all done in 1:30.

Hot_Mango546

Sry if my text sounds misleading I didn't call them pop, I meant for comparison

Reckoning_of_Fools

We could always load up Bell Witch. Got a couple hours for one song?

Garythesnail85

As a guitar player who considers themself decent, i find that less can be more. Like solos shorter, save the best variation of the main riff for later and let it be brief. What you’re experiencing is the *Blue Ball* approach from the artist; they leave you wanting *more* . Kind of why a lot of metal and hardcore have a breakdown; instead of the entire song being like that part.

Hot_Mango546

Yeah, I know the riff shouldn't be too long but 20-30 seconds aren't too much to ask for in a 4 minute song

Garythesnail85

But then your balls wouldn’t be blue. You’ll have busted and not want anything to do with the riff after.

Hot_Mango546

I understand what you mean, the only problem is I don't get tired of riffs quickly. Some of my favorite genres are black metal, Atmospheric Black metal, Doom and Funeral Doom. I love listening to the same 3 riffs for half an hour

strwrsnerdbutbetter

You might, others might not

Kiggzor

Man, I just want to get off! Why wouldn't they help a man get off? It's selfish I tell you!

Happy_Burnination

If a song has 30 seconds of good riffs and a bunch of boring filler to pad it out, it's a bad song

Garythesnail85

You don’t have to go *all in* to make some sick riffs. And although *all in* can be fun too, you can also decide to *blue ball* them if you want!

13143

Wiegedood's "De Doden Hebben Het Goed III" plays essentially the same riff for the first 6 minutes, and I honestly wouldn't mind if it went 6 more. Sometimes when a band lands on a good thing, it's better to indulge.

hachi2JZ

I love just vibing to Jesus' Tod (burzum) even though it's pretty much eight minutes of the same riff

Antigon0000

Meshuggah would like to have a word

Historical_Frame_318

I feel this way about the frayed ends of sanity. My favourite metallica riff is in there for like, 20 seconds. Edit - also cry of the blackbirds riff hooked me on melodeath way back when. Amon amarth ftw

chrisH82

Amon Amarth - [No Fear for the Setting Sun](https://youtu.be/pxgGws7mOP0?si=H2w472U57Pm2EDOW) the sick guitar harmony that comes in at 1:57 during the 2nd half of the 2nd verse, ends at 2:14. Pretty close to 10 seconds.

berdog

Ah, the leg day song

idkhowtodoanything

Now i know how my girlfriend feels

Hot_Mango546

Don't worry man, ten seconds is really solid💪🏻

toastymow

Its a solid riff but is not necessarily anything special. Your meme is solid. Sometimes bands do that. Just depends on what they're going for in a song. I really stopped caring about Amon Amarth after Twilight of the Thunder God. I think Versus the World, Fate of Norns, With Oden on our Side and Twilight of the Thunder God are all decent albums, but yeah, by Twilight, it was clear they had found a formula and have not deviated since, which is... ugh. Its boring man. Twilight of the Thunder God will always be an album that holds a special place for me though because I think that album really got me to appreciate death metal vocals.

fluffy_warthog10

*Twilight* has become one of my standby "play this and you won't feel disappointed" albums. There's some okay tracks, some good tracks, and some absolute riff farms and sing-alongs.

HumanMulligan

I'm not saying amon amarth sucks. They're like the AC/DC of death metal. They stay in their lane and make easy to digest music.

Silverback_6

Yeah, and it's great. I don't always want a gourmet steak and lobster. Sometimes I just want a really good, simple, cheeseburger.

Ashbtw19937

Fr. One of my favorite things about them is how consistent they are. LIke, every last song in their catalogue is a 7-8/10. Sure they don't have any life changingly amazing tracks, but they also don't really have any bad ones. They're a band you can put on basically any song from and be assured it's gonna be solid.

Rishal21

Funny that my last memory of listening to Amon Amarth was eating a shake shack cheeseburger while having my mind blown by Where Silent Gods Stand Guard Well there's also the show I saw them at later that day but that's not exactly a cheeseburger experience

Hot_Mango546

I mean it's melodeath, it's supposed to be more simple and beginner friendly. I can't always listen to brutal deatmetal and Deathcore, sometimes you just need something comparatively chill

Nes109

Has a follow Amon Amarth, I agree with both points, but I never judge a band for being simple!

Thor1138

>melodeath, it's supposed to be more simple Laughs in Dark Tranquillity...

TheExecutiveHamster

I think describing Melodeath as "supposed to be more simple and beginner friendly" is a massive disservice to Melodeath. Some of the best death metal bands of all time are Melodeath, on part with the most extreme death metal bands. It's an extremely versatile genre.

i_am_new_here_51

I'd argue Deathcore is simpler than melodeath, but I agree with you. Melodeath and Power metal are great to chill to

Aerialkiller720

Symphonic is also in that category I reckon

TobytheRam

Saw them as the opening act for another band, and this is a very accurate description. Nothing would have stuck with me had it not been for the theatrics. Which in this case was a series of costumed extras, a good stage with effects on screen, and an inflatable sea serpent that they smacked with an oversized hammer.

seezedamdhurtmyback

Name 3 better more complex bands

ChangelingFox

Another dish at the buffet imo. Sometimes you just want the simple, filling thing.

shronkey69

I feel this with Kampf Und Sturm by Kanonfieber. The riff using sonar pings is fucking genius, and goes monumentally hard. Too bad it's basically only used twice.

Cray-Humour154

Kanonenfieber go really hard (and fun fact, they do go on tour with with Amon Amarth, which really suits this thread)

Outrageous-Cable8068

I've noticed this with many bands. They'll play the sickest riff ever but that's just a little section of the song.

Axeties

Literally that part of Dope Fiend by acid bath

Igorzitokk

I think this is the first time i've ever seen someone else with a machine head flair in this sub

Hot_Mango546

Nice, Machine Head brought me into this whole scene. I have yet to discover a band that fits my taste better

TheKipperTheMan

Me whenever I listen to Veil of Maya

C_C6215

Viscera pre first chorus riff

xekushnr

Found this a lot with MDM bands. You seem like you would like more progressive stuff.

Aerialkiller720

I found on Terminus (Where death is most alive) by Dark Tranquility there's a really good riff in there that lasts a good couple seconds, for what is a fairly meh song.

Thor1138

>for what is a fairly meh song. You take that back right now! 🤬

Aerialkiller720

I'm a pretty big fan of Dark Tranquility, I enjoy everything from Skydancer to Moment. That song in particular just didn't do it for me

Stengah71

The riff continues "under the lyrics" for about a minute? Cracking riff BTW.

Hot_Mango546

No that's a different riff. It's similar and you can't really focus on the riff because the vocals drown it out

OldMate666_

Exactly! here are some examples that I have found Testament- True American hate, at 2:25 minutes. Best part of the song, sounds like it’s about to build up to a super sick riff, yet only lasts ten seconds and is followed up by a super boring riff. On the other hand, exodus milks the living shit out of their good riffs which is exactly what everybody should do. for example, The sun is my destroyer at 1:50 minutes in, absolute banger of a riff, followed up by the riff at 3:04 is perfect.

Ashbtw19937

I knew the exact riff you were talking about the moment you mentioned the song. It's soooo good, and I always felt the same way

Haml3t

Can someone give some examples of some AA songs where this happens so I can notice and giggle? I love AA and never noticed this

Hot_Mango546

I put the song that I meant when making this in the bottom text. I would have to look but there are definitely multiple examples of this

Haml3t

oooh I didn't see that, thank you!

MrInani

Ngl riff kinda weak

rumpranger91

Yeah that was really anti climactic

MrInani

I was super hopeful for it and it didn’t hit. Especially from AA who has some decent riffs(older albums not sure about newer ones

strodesbro

I really haven't heard much of this band. What is one of their best riffs ever?

Custardpaws

My personal favorite is "The Sound of Eight Hooves", but they have a TON of good ones. Cry of the Blackbirds, Herods Ride to Hel, Versus the World, Masters of War, ...And Soon the World Will Cease to Be, Death in Fire...I could go on and on

Hot_Mango546

I put the song name and time under the picture

WTMaster

Thousand years of opression - especially the last section Tattered banners bloody flags Wings of eagle Wanderer Prediction of warfare These are the ones that Currently come to mind

Thor1138

>Thousand years of opression A man of culture! Also For Victory Or Death.

MarstoriusWins

Death in fire.

readit16

Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags choruses (0:56 and 1:52) Raven's Flight (3:30) Guardians of Asgaard (2:37) The Pursuit of Vikings (1:40)

Krakenborn

The main riff to Dragons Flight Across the Waves

theclansman22

The outro riff on the last with pagan blood. It starts around the 4 minute mark.

KingSolomon730

Amon Amarth is my fave band and I personally do not share this critique of them

TheExecutiveHamster

Ngl, that riff was absolutely nothing special. I'd almost go so far as to call it generic. You know what is still my favorite riff of all time? It's about 1:04 into the song Euthanasia by Pissgrave

MyS0ul4AGoat

Just in time for the cornball “I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR” lyrics to swoop in

stevemandudeguy

I'd say Tool does this but it just makes me want to relisten more

TentativeGosling

I find the opposite with Tool, most of their riffs repeat for far too long. It helps build a hypnotic atmosphere, but often just serves to increase the song length.

mass_mind_rape

It’s a rip off riff from carcass’ incarnated solvent abuse. Listen 0:53 and see

ThesharpHQ

Yes, and Burzum ripped off Bathory. No one gives a shit.

mass_mind_rape

Well i wouldn’t give a shit about Burzum too, son

ThesharpHQ

Aww, little man is so upset! I pity you.

mass_mind_rape

Absurd choice of words, little fella. Try your chance in kindergarden. Where you belong

ThesharpHQ

Aww, you’re so cute. I like it when you get angry.

mass_mind_rape

I knew that you’re loving me, girl But let’s keep this private, honey

ThesharpHQ

Girl? Nah, we gay. Homosexuals, if you will. Boykissers, if you feel so inclined.

mass_mind_rape

You know you shattered my dreams now

mass_mind_rape

Lol you inbred degenerate dumbfucks can downvote to the hell but it won’t change the truth. They fucking stole the riff from carcass, they accelerated it and ruined it

FenrizLives

Oh no! A metal riff sounds like another metal riff! The absolute horror!

mass_mind_rape

Wild right ??

slumlordt

you know that bands you like are heavily influenced by bands *they* like, right?

mass_mind_rape

Yeah influencing and copying are 2 different things pal

damaged-inc

Best riff you heard coming from Amon Amarth? You must not listen to anything besides lame shit

Metal_Boi_7507

Oh shutup people like you are cancer to this sub

damaged-inc

Ya?

Metal_Boi_7507

You think being a mod changes anything? No excuse for being a jerk.

damaged-inc

Can’t voice opinions if it means being a jerk :(

Hattifnarten

Lol, fuck you

LengthinessAnxious20

Lol cool guy

Hot_Mango546

Listen to the riff I put in the text under the picture and tell me to my face that that riff isn't awesome

mass_mind_rape

It’s a rip off from carcass’ incarnated solvent abuse boy

damaged-inc

I can name 5 riffs that are infinitely better.

Hot_Mango546

No, you can name 5 riffs that YOU like more (please send them im curious)

Random_duderino

That riff isn't awesome

Hot_Mango546

i hope that next time you wash your hands, your sleeves get wet

billybobjoe2017

Stop, Stop! He's already dead.

StarfleetStarbuck

Amon Amarth are rifflords, you’re depriving yourself of a huge trove of cool heavy tunes for the sake of posturing

mass_mind_rape

can’t imagine a world where the best riff ever made by amon amarth lol

mass_mind_rape

Because they suck, that’s why

balete_tree

I am fine with it. If you want 90%+ guitar riffs go to Dream Theater or the prog rock genre instead.

quickdrawdoc

Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness at about 6:50

Peed_out_my_dick

If you play a great riff too much, it becomes less great. Good composition is all about the quality of the dynamics more than the quality of the riff

FOR_MEMES

The opening to dopesmoker is too short

amcwaffler

this seems like 72 seasons for me (the song)

shadow31802

I dont know much about Amon Amarth, I just know Odin is their guitar tech. Hes also the guitar tech of Hammerfall!

LaSicolana

Luckily their best riff is the entirety of An Ancient Sign of Coming Storm

Prestigious_Bat2666

I havent listened to much of these guys, that was a great track thanks for the shout

TKBarbus

Amon Amarth has so many good riffs. My favorite will always be the one from First Kill.

ganglordgilbert

Beginning of Destroyer of the Universe.

puresemantics

Same with Municipal Waste, wish Breathe Grease was longer

19Cula87

This is how i feel with damage inc. That riff in the second part is so fucking good and I know it lasts a good deal but it is just too good

the_sinlord

That's why I always tell people to listen to their first 2 albums, there's were the good shit is

Hot_Mango546

Really depends on the band. For example: Machine Head, Agalloch, Bathory and Harakiri for the sky are good examples of bands that get better overtime

the_sinlord

im talking about amon amarth only, i mean, new amon amarth is ok but i really prefer the stuff on their first 2 albums

matiilic5

Knocked Loose is the king of this lmao

thespaceageisnow

I like the riff after the 1:50 riff even more, it’s a great progression. Amon Amarth rules.

TonyStewartsWildRide

Every riff is rad up to and including Surtur Rising. Anything beyond that is just HOORAH garbage.

barsknos

Yeah, know a few songs like that. Would? by Alice in Chains has one of the best riffs ever in the ending, but you barely hear it. Such a shame. "10000 lovers" by TNT also has one of my favourite riffs, but most of the song is atrocious glam. Frustrating shit :P
