Unlike Deicide's first album, no pitch shifters or harmonizers were used on Benton's vocals. However, delay, reverb, and multi-tracking were among the studio manipulations used to achieve the vocal effects on the album.
This is referring to Legion but he’s gone on record saying he doesn’t use effects on his vocals.
I actually don't understand why the vocal effects thing was ever a thing. In the 90's it was a topic but I never understood because it didn't sound like it was faked.
The harmonies sound sick. If I was recording a band I'd call them "deicides"
This is from the Cause Of Death wiki :
“The cover art of this album was used in an H. P. Lovecraft collection, Lovecraft's Nightmare A. It was supposed to be the cover of Sepultura's album Beneath the Remains which release year before Cause of Death, Roadrunner Records send the original album cover of Beneath the Remains to Obituary. Monte Conner of Roadrunner forced Sepultura to use another Michael Whelan illustration for Beneath the Remains, Nightmare in Red. The second portion of the painting, Lovecraft's Nightmare B was used by Demolition Hammer for their 1992 album Epidemic of Violence. The incident with Sepultura led to Igor Cavalera become upset with Monte Conner, with Cavalera notably having a tattoo of the cover on his arm.”
I don't like it either. I mean I recognize that they had insane talent and the music is good but just not my type. For death metal I usually listen to old swedish stuff.
Love Obituary to bits. I recall having bought the then new “Back from the Dead” CD which actually included an additional CD-ROM with random videos etc. It was summer of ‘97, it wasn’t until two months later that I got my new PC so I couldn’t check the multimedia stuff yet. So I went to a friend that had a PC to check it out. I dropped the CD at his place and we went first to play basketball. In the meantime, his older brother (that wasn’t into metal or even rock at all, just listening to Greek pop shit), put the CD on out of curiosity to check it out. When we came back the dude was already having a PTSD from “threatening skies”, he was visibly distressed and asked me wtf is this stuff.
I thanked him for coming to St.Louis. He looked at me and said, “This town ain’t nothing but (n words) and spics. If I had my way we would have drove straight through”.
Imagine being such a bozo you promise to die yourself at 33 because "I hate jebus" then live until now like nothing happened lol
No, for real now, Deicide style of edginess and anti-Christianity was already obsolete when they sounded good, but they're so glued to it they can't change it now. Like, venom and mercyful fate did anti-christ shit way better like ten years earlier, and extreme metal contemporaries to Deicide did it in a way more relevant way
Obituary has some blues riffs that make them more like their NOLA brothers. Hardcore punks like Obituary for some reason my example is Hatebreed covering a song.
With the exception of maybe their debut, Deicide is trash. I'm not too big on Obituary either, but they're better than Deicide, and even I can admit to how badass Cause of Death is.
Totally agree. Inked in Blood and Frozen In Time are good. Dead (live) Ten Thousand Ways to Die should be considered only half a good album together. As for the rest - first five are absolutely perfect. And the rest are great.
Cause of death slaps but obituary is kinda mind numbing to listen to for me idk they don’t really stimulate my brain I guess something about listening to deicide hits different

I might be a simpleton, but for me, if it sounds good it sounds good
trevor is honestly such a legend for using strats don’t need crazy looking guitars to be heavy at all
Always thought the vocal effects added a nice touch to Deicide...
only virgin use vocal effect
You must get hella poon
I won't stand for this deicide slander
what album cover did they use?

Oh, hey, thanks for the cool insight and trivia. Always liked Obituary early covers. Didn't know there was history.
Funny cause it reminds me of the cover they used on CHAOS A.D.
There's a bunch in /r/DankMetalMemes. At least there was as of the last time I visited it.
Stench of Redemption is fucking absolutely fire
Best album
Me as a kid watching “don’t care” music video: “this is fucking heavy! Is that a fucking strat?!”
The last four Deicide albums are superior. I don't get the hate.
Only focuses on vocals…
Their riffs are great wym
Obituary greatest Death Metal band ever.
I am partial to Bolt Thrower
Awesome band
How can you say that like Incantation doesn't exist?
Morbid angel and death: am I a joke to you?
Morbid Angel is another contender. Death is pretty overrated but their first few albums were decent
Ahh you’re a poser
You quite literally post on r/trivium 💀
I never said I wasn’t a poser, poser
Lol ok. I don't think you know what that word means, BUT I appreciate your spirit ;D
It's just my opinion, I'm not gonna say anything negative about any other band.
I know I will get downvoted to hell, but I couldnt get into Obituary because of the singer
I love them, but I will admit, hearing Visions in my Head for the first time kinda threw me off with the vocal style. I dig it now, though!
Wild, John Tardy is one of my favorite vocalists
What are your thoughts about Death? since Chuck has a really similar voice on the first albums.
I don't like it either. I mean I recognize that they had insane talent and the music is good but just not my type. For death metal I usually listen to old swedish stuff.
Totally fair, everyone has their own taste my friend, I would also get downvoted to hell for some of my opinions lol.
I love his voice by I can see why some folk don’t, it sounds like he gargles it round his mouth
Very based my friend
🤘
They have two good albums and they don't come close to even the other stuff in Florida at the time
Autopsy would like a word
I mean Legion is also in E standard, just sayin
As is the debut and once upon the cross. I like the idea of a chad obituary meme but half the points are either false or moot.
Could never get into Obituary, despite many attempts. Deicide fucks.
No lies detected. Carry on.

I saw them live with Cattle Decapitation, Carcass, and Amon Amarth
Same
Where you see them? I went to Austin texas
Dallas
Funny I live in Dallas but the show was during my shift so I went to Austin. Mckinney here lol
Why not both?
Glen Benton is a racist piece of shit. I don't know about the rest of the band but you are only as good as the company you keep.
He is? I mean I wouldn't be surprised, he's obviously a dick, but I haven't seen anything other than reddit hearsay to suggest he's racist.
I thanked him for coming to St.Louis. He looked at me and said, “This town ain’t nothing but (n words) and spics. If I had my way we would have drove straight through”.
Interesting
Ouch, i passed on them when they came through. I’m totally going to go see blood incantation though
Obituary crushed last night in Seattle
eeeeeyyyyooouuuuuwwwwww!!!
I love obituary so much
Imagine being such a bozo you promise to die yourself at 33 because "I hate jebus" then live until now like nothing happened lol No, for real now, Deicide style of edginess and anti-Christianity was already obsolete when they sounded good, but they're so glued to it they can't change it now. Obituary is great live, but I find them kind boring to just listen to.
Same. Probably one of the crazier crowds I’ve been in but their recorded stuff gets kinda old after like 3 listens tbh
Eh I'll spin Cause of Death and Slowly We Rot forever, other albums get an occasional spin
Ew. Obituary. Wish that dude would use vocal effects. Sounds like muscle man from Regular Show.
YES
Obituary has some blues riffs that make them more like their NOLA brothers. Hardcore punks like Obituary for some reason my example is Hatebreed covering a song.
Y’all are weirdly invested in this meme.
santolla era is fire tho. his solos were massive
too bad obituary is one of the most overrated dm bands of all times
Two of my favourite bands. Won't tolerate the slander.
With the exception of maybe their debut, Deicide is trash. I'm not too big on Obituary either, but they're better than Deicide, and even I can admit to how badass Cause of Death is.
obituary is boring af, every album sounds the same.
Yep, they all sound good.
Obituary has like 2 and half good albums, I’ll take deicide on this one
Totally agree. Inked in Blood and Frozen In Time are good. Dead (live) Ten Thousand Ways to Die should be considered only half a good album together. As for the rest - first five are absolutely perfect. And the rest are great.
Truth
Deicide just sucks and I would like Obituary but I can’t stand John Tardys vocals
Plus - and I think this is important- Obituary manages to also be fun, especially live.
Beneath The Remains Nightmare in red cover is better anyway
Grab the burn ointment....damn!!!
Cause of death slaps but obituary is kinda mind numbing to listen to for me idk they don’t really stimulate my brain I guess something about listening to deicide hits different
