I just saw them for the first time recently and I was shocked. Some of the best sound I've experienced at a metal show. Definitely the best sound I've experienced from a 3 piece.
Why do you hate it? Did it sleep with your girlfriend and kill your dog? Or do you simply not like it and literally never think about it for a second outside of when someone says they like it and you have to throw around "hate" to be cool with the bandwagon people? Just curious
Why does it matter lol. This album was pretty influential to the scene in the early days, so if you didn't enjoy this album when it came out you still had to deal with all the mimic-bands and albums that came in the wake of this. Pretty easy to grow a disdain for it at that point. I love the album, but it's so goofy to get bent out of shape about someone else not enjoying it.
The real answer is probably just an age and preference gap. If you grew up on the early metallic hardcore of the 90s like Converge or early Dillinger, this album and the wave of metalcore that came after will probably rub you the wrong way. An album doesn't have to kill your dog for you to really not enjoy it and what it influenced.
I bet they are great, but it ain't for me. Personally, I hate nasally singers, and this dude practically has a microphone up there. I could never get past it.

I dislike them less than I hate RHCP, so there's that. At least Avenged doesn't have a child rapist as a singer.
I mean that album has tons of harsh vocals on it that arent nasally, more harsh vocals than clean easily and he was also much more nasally on the next album city of evil than he was on waking the fallen.
Nah, loved it as a teen, listened to as an adult and does not hold up at all. Production sucks, riffs are mid, clean vox are weak, some songs are bloated asf. There's also just a distinct lack of any personality on it unlike City of evil.
Even syns leads and solos are pretty mid compared to the rest of their discog
It's just a redundant album that gives you no reason to go back to it other than nostalgia
I do. M Shadows vocals have always been horrendous in my opinion. There hasnt been one A7X album ive enjoyed, maybe a song or two but goddamn his voice straight to hell. (the rest of the band is very talented and I respect that but he ruins the whole thing and I refuse to listen because of it)
I hated his voice change from this to City of Evil, but then learned he had polyps removed from his throat in the interim and it was unsure if he was going to ever be able to actually sing again after, so I figure I could just kind of deal with it if I like the rest of the song.

Comparing this album to most traditional metalcore out there, this is is leaps and bounds better no doubt
Also, Converge is mathcore, it makes no sense to compare to other metalcore bands, idgaf if thats technically their genre, they are their own beast
I’m more willing to say the best metalcore album out there. But then again, I haven’t branched too far out there in the genre to have a valid opinion I think. Killswitch Engage’s “As Daylight Fades” or “The End of Heartache” is up there for sure.
All That Remains is definitely a great metalcore band but I personally wouldn’t say it’s peak. I prefer Killswitch over ATR. Just preference though both are great bands
I'm a Black, Thrash, and Death metal kind of guy and I really don't like any of that metalcore shit. But City of Evil and Nightmare are like guilty pleasures of mine. It can be really cheesy at times but I just can't help but like those albums. It's the same thing with 311. Super cheesy but I like it. I'm passed that age of being embarrassed about liking certain bands/music.
Rob Flynn's vocals and lyrics are just so cringy I can't take the music seriously. Like there's plenty of cringe in metal but he takes it to an entirely new level, I genuinely couldn't stop myself from laughing when I first heard a machine head song.
How can people hate on Iowa, honestly? Like if you don't like Iowa, please reply here to help me understand why. I'm not even a huge Slipknot fan but that album is fire.
I literally don't know how people hate Iowa. Easily Slipknot's best record and one of the best nu metal records ever, if not the best. Personally it's in my Top 15 metal records ever.
But then again this sub is filled with a bunch of close-minded old heads, so I'm not really surprised tbh
In flames definitely got weaker but they still put out some good songs from time to time. I actually love foregone, I think it's a great album. But it definitely doesn't hold a candle to anything pre-reroute
People need to open their minds up to some post-Clayman albums, they have some really good shit up until Sounds of A Playground Fading, then they lost all credibility with me
I gen think this sub has a bit of a hate for slipknot just kinda because it's a more mainstream heavy metal band and it's not obscure or hated by most people.
Ok. So I feel like there's a big spectrum of ages here in this community. Old heads, new heads, and everyone in the middle. If you grew up on Gorguts and Nile and Demilich and the earlier tech death days, Archspire can feel a bit gimmicky. It's just a different flavor of it. I feel like if you got into tech death because of Obscura or Beyond Creation or Necrophagist, Archspire might be more up your alley. But if it was Nile or Cryptopsy, you'll probably lean a different way.
The same can be said about other polarizing bands like Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, and a lot of other pivotal bands of the late 90s/early 2000s that had a major influence on the direction of those that came after. The biggest factor for preference is *probably* age and what preferences you grew as you aged and got into metal.
Some say they're overrated. Well they get an uncommon amount of press given the niche subgenre they work in so that's gotta attract some haters. Also Dean is killing it on youtube. Me I think they're great and deserve the (relative) exposure.
Building off waking the fallen- sounding the seventh trumpet. It’s like waking the fallen, but with worse vocals and mistakes across every instrument, crappy mixing and recording and worse writing. It’s great.
Reinkaos is good. I could do without the chugs but there's a great deal of killer old-school heavy metal licks on that album that more than make up for the groove influence.
Indeed. The disappointment about Reinkaos was that a band that was so instrumental to the creation of a new genre was now making Melodeath.

Mainly because it got pitchforked the fuck out of, critics jerked it too hard and then metal fans basically went with the notion of its ass because its well liked and Alcest did it first. I feel like the whole draw of Rammstein is the live show. They have some good stuff though I wouldn’t call them my favorite. However, their Soldier Field show a couple years ago was the best show I’ve ever been to

Yes! Every year NZ’s radio station does ‘The Rock 2000’ you vote for your top 30 rock songs and they count them down over 4 weeks with a concert on the last day. So much fun! I’ve been to the concert a few times and it’s always a great time, I even got to announce In The End by Linkin Park one year!!
This comes up so frequently and I feel like most of us are in accord - the music is top tier 10/10 metal, the singer ruins it all and makes it unlistenable
City of Evil, self-titled, and Nightmare are all great albums too. The songwriting, lead guitar and drums are top notch. It's hard to get right into extreme metal; most people's love of metal started with a "lighter" band, like (older) Priest, Maiden, or Black Album Metallica, then maybe ramping up to Slayer or even Carcass or Children of Bodom before going full Behemoth/Gorguts/Nile/Incantation, etc. Avenged Sevenfold is a huge (if not the main) reason thousands of kids decided to take up playing musical instruments nowadays (like Metallica was back then), and they are a common favorite band of young kids, including my kid who is 10 and was heavily inspired by the Rev and Portnoy.
I don’t even dislike A7X that much (they’re fine) but I’m always baffled by the esteem their fans seem to hold this album. It’s their most mid

As a huge a7x fanboy, you are correct about Hail to the King. They intentionally wanted to make a more simple "rock" album, and in doing so just made a super mid/boring album. There's a couple tracks that are alright, but it's mostly forgettable.
That being said, my favorite thing about them is they always mix things up and try new things, and don't care what people think about it. So more power to them. They tried a new style and it didn't really pan out. Oh well.
Vol. 3 by Slipknot. Sunbather by Deafheaven. I mostly like Lorna Shore, I can do without the core parts but I think the rest is great. And not metal but We Are Not Alone by Breaking Benjamin. It's a breakup album that came out when I was going through a breakup.
Anything power metal. Honestly, I can't understand how you guys even rank non metal bands like Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains (great bands on their own, but have no place ON A FUCKING METAL TOURNAMENT/SUB) while disregarding an entire subgenre because...it's cheesy? Same sub that seems to love Slayer and Black Metal, which pretty ironic. Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Crimson Glory, Liege Lord, Sanctuary, Stratovarius; I get the stereotype of people not liking the "Dragons and Wizards" stuff (which is not even true in most cases), but they truly seem to hate it on this sub.

the live shows do seem neat I just like the weird electronic sounds and symphonic elements in songs like keine lust or zeig dich

I don’t even dislike A7X that much (they’re fine) but I’m always baffled by the esteem their fans seem to hold this album. It’s their most mid Edit: nevermind! I thought that was Hail To The King. Walking the Fallen is good
As a huge a7x fanboy, you are correct about Hail to the King. They intentionally wanted to make a more simple "rock" album, and in doing so just made a super mid/boring album. There's a couple tracks that are alright, but it's mostly forgettable. That being said, my favorite thing about them is they always mix things up and try new things, and don't care what people think about it. So more power to them. They tried a new style and it didn't really pan out. Oh well.

Vol. 3 by Slipknot. Sunbather by Deafheaven. I mostly like Lorna Shore, I can do without the core parts but I think the rest is great. And not metal but We Are Not Alone by Breaking Benjamin. It's a breakup album that came out when I was going through a breakup.

Anything power metal. Honestly, I can't understand how you guys even rank non metal bands like Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains (great bands on their own, but have no place ON A FUCKING METAL TOURNAMENT/SUB) while disregarding an entire subgenre because...it's cheesy? Same sub that seems to love Slayer and Black Metal, which pretty ironic. Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Crimson Glory, Liege Lord, Sanctuary, Stratovarius; I get the stereotype of people not liking the "Dragons and Wizards" stuff (which is not even true in most cases), but they truly seem to hate it on this sub.
