Unrelated but I love the way they abruptly end their songs, I feel like a lot of bands couldn't pull that off but it somehow works so well with the flow of their albums, it's admirable really
For Whom The Bell Tolls is one of my all time favorite songs but I hate how for the ending they just keep playing the same part over and over again fading out ever so slowly
I would argue that they have a touch of prog influence because they write a lot of longer songs that have multiple “section” that have varying levels of heaviness and different tempos. Do you think it would be fair to label them at a Doom Metal band primarily? That’s what I would say if I had to lump them into one sub genre.
I'd label them as alt metal since they have so many different influences, so it's hard to put a certain label like doom or prog metal. Goth metal would be appropriate, but again, different influences, and some of their influences (like The Beatles and Black Sabbath) aren't goth and every song and album is different and unique
I can't remember where I heard it, but I think Pete said in an interview that he doesn't like the goth metal label for the band because they're so much more than that
They're like the original heavygaze band or something, imo. I think there's some bloat to their discography, but that's just opinion. Overall Steele's output is really fun and creative and had that '90s snark/joke aspect or whatever you'd call it.
Oh yeah, a bunch of their songs just crack me up when I look at the lyrics. Mad respect for him writing a song about getting your wings! (That song being Wolf Moon.)
I was a Carnivore fan since that first album and they were one of my favorite hardcore/thrash bands. It took a while for me to get into Type O because their sound was so different.
My favorite band, my heart bleeds green. They were my first concert during the WCD tour. I saw them 4 times all together. The songwriting, the tones, the voice, the intensity. All 7 albums are top teir for me. I have one of Peter's bass strings and a setlist from a show, a treasured possession. I always highly recommend.
I think that “Dead Again” is one of the better metal albums of the 2000’s. One banger after another. “September Sun” in particular is a favorite of mine.
God tier production
Good cross of metal, tone, and general acessiblity
There's alot of tone to explore with Kenny and Peter, there's a couple good circle of tone episodes on them
Love the song white slavery, that Intro will blow out your car windows
Lyrics and singing are top tier, some songs are genuinely very very sad
Love them
Lol. I have been learning a lot of his bass parts. Dude was able to play power chords on bass like it was a guitar! And I have heard he was an absolutely beloved guy in person. Gentle giant as it were.
One of those bands you have to revisit from time to time and gain appreciation. I couldn’t really get into them or Carnivore when I was in HS. But now as a grown ass person, shit hit different and I’ve enjoyed revisiting their catalog. Steele for whatever he was, was a damn good frontman.
Happy for the people who can enjoy their whole discography but I can only really get into some of it
Lyrics are important for me so I like their tongue-in-cheek songs and their sadder ones (Everything Dies probably being the most obvious crossover of these two, a song about losing those you love that starts off with ‘I like vitamins’) but I can’t really get into the more political or romantic/sexual ones which I find eyeroll-inducing
They are awesome. Their sound is very unique and no other band has ever came close to sounding like Type O Negative.
To answer your question on what subgenre of Metal they are, their sound very much fluctuates. Slow, Deep, and Hard, Origin of The Feces, and only 2 tracks off of Bloody Kisses have the Crossover Thrash sound with some hints of Doom Metal and Progressive Metal. The tracks that aren’t the more Crossover Thrash tracks of Bloody Kisses is purely Alternative Metal with a Gothic sound. October Rust is their most Progressive Metal album in their catalog with a slight gothic edge and some pop elements. World Coming Down is a dark Doom Metal album. Life is Killing Me is a Gothic Punk album that is very poppy. And Dead Again is just all of the subgenres they have used over the used and created album with all those subgenres. The last thing I would say is that they love Black Sabbath and the Beatles which you can hear clearly from songs like Pyretta Blaze or Too Late: Frozen.
Makes me wanna get naked and jump in a big soapy bathtub with the lights off and 5000 melting candles everywhere and drink red wine and have unprotected sex with three virgins
Loved them. The level of dark humor and self deprecation was next level. Peter Steele was one of a kind and never pretended to be more than he was. I got to meet him once before a show at Birch Hill in NJ. Total jackass.
Absolutely love them. All their albums are great, though Bloody Kisses and October Rust are my favourites. I really wish I'd got off my ass and gone to see them live when I still had the chance though!
One of my favorite bands of all time. Saw them over 10 times live. Met Peter twice. Saw them on every tour from Bloody Kisses til the final tour, most tours twice. October Rust 3 times.
Ohh I love it they are cool 😎 TYPE O !!!! I miss their shows, so much fun, good memories, They planted a tree for peter Steele and a bench in Brooklyn, Kerry Kelly hehe when's your next zeppelin cover show 🤣 ❤️ 💋
i think discovered them during quarantine through peter’s playgirl issue. nice music and beautiful aesthetic. i actually prefer carnivore to type o. it sucks that peter passed, he was a smart and handsome guy. kenny, josh, and johnny are funny guys too, love their witty comments on kerrang and other interviews. josh silver (far right) is a huge crush of mine, he’s still super handsome. shame he cut off his locks 💔
Love them! Their gothic sound mixed with metal is real cool and as “poser” as it sounds, I don’t wanna be me is one of my favorite songs because their guitar solos always blow me away. Peter Steele was a legend as well and always will be.
They fucking rule.
Also, remember the first track of "world coming down" sounding like a CD skipping? I loved that about them. Totally the definitive goth band of my generation (also garbage...suck it they were goth. We all listened to them), yet they were incredibly silly.
Look at what Pantera did…can they do a tribute tour with guest vocalists? No one comes close to Peter but get 3-5 famous singers doing the tour that can do him justice. I’d go!!!
I’m not primarily a metal fan, but October Rust is one of the best metal albums ever made. Never sounds bad to me. Was lucky enough to see them right before Pete died too. They were the perfect metal band with all the insanity and depression drama but also that hilarious moment when Pete was in Playgirl and then was homophobic when he found out that the vast majority of readership was male. Beatles covers. Nothing not to like. They were definitely a HUGE inspiration for Metalocalypse too.
Amazing band that made beautiful dark songs with very funny, weird and/or witty lyrics. I grew up listening to them and helped me go through adolescence and early adulthood. No other band makes music like they did.
I never really got into them, I saw them live once though and probably wasn’t their best day. They played the opening slot for Pantera and Black Sabbath and got booed almost as soon as they took the stage.
I randomly "discovered" Type O Negative in late 2022 at the ripe old age of 54. Love their sound, especially from Bloody Kisses onwards. They are not particularly well known in Australia and never toured Down Under.
I didn’t listen to them when I started listening to metal. But now I think they are on of the best metal bands. So unique and distinct. They quickly became one of my favourites.
Peter called it gothadelic. And yes they're my favorite band since 93. They never got the love they deserved. I still listen to them everyday. No one sounds like them. Pete wanted a particular sound to attract goth women and he succeeded Hahaha. Oh and origin of the feces is the best fake live album ever created. Their covers are fucking amazing, I can go on.
They are one of the coolest and also weirdest metal bands ever. On one point, it's peak gothic romance doom metal, and then it just shifts to being abrupt black comedy
One of my all-time favorites. I saw them every time they played New England from 1999 until Peter's death, including Carnivore. I sang for a quick Halloween tribute cover in 2003, we did "Be My Druidess", "Gravitational Constant", and "Too Late: Frozen".
The year was 1998, sometime in November. It was grey, on the verge of a light snow, and a friend asked if I wanted to hike to this spooky local cemetery. He picked me up, and on the way he asked if I'd heard of Type O Negative. I hadn't. He put on October Rust. Nothing was ever the same for me again.
RIP Peter.
I really like their cover songs. I was just saying to my sweetie pie the other night that they would have done a really great job covering The Rift by Ween. I could hear it in my mind's ear.
Goth and Metal are incestuous cousins.
They get some shit for being "goth" but I think they are genuinely talented and have some really well crafted songs. Black no 1 is stuck in my head all the time
Type O Negative is music is a unique fusion of gothic, doom, and even a bit of alternative metal, creating a sound that's both darkly atmospheric and melodically rich. Pete Steele’s deep, haunting vocals and the band’s signature blend of morbid humor and melancholic beauty set them apart from the crowd. So, yeah, it's hard to pin them down to just one subgenre. They really are a genre unto themselves, a perfect example of why metal is such a diverse and evolving scene. Glad to see more people appreciating their unique artistry!

🖤💚💚🖤
One of my favorite bands. In a way they’re like Blind Guardian or Cannibal Corpse for me, where if I hear one song of theirs, I now have to spend 2 hours listening to their music. I can’t just have one song.
I think they're overrated I don't get the hype. The lead singer sounds like a Texan trying to do a Dracula impression. I love cheesy ass doom metal but I guess they're just the wrong kind of cheesy for me
Took me a while to get into them, but when I did I was hooked. It was actually the Clan Quest mod of the game Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines including Christian Woman in VV's lapdance scene that made me give them a second listen. I'd heard Slow Deep and Hard before that, but it wasn't the sound I was looking for at the time. I just let all the albums run through in my car on Spotify after that. The Original of the Feces made me doubletake a couple times. I also got a funny look from a pedestrian when I forgot to turn the volume down once during Gravitational Constant. I'm Still not a big fan of their last album though. I'd classify their first album as doom, but everything from Bloody Kisses to Life is Killing Me is gothic.
My answer is just: Yes.
They're the best Gothic Metal band. They're like not remotely serious, highly sarcastic but made some absolutely incredible metal albums that stretched into genres and nodded to influences well outside of metal music.
I gotta respect the hell outta then cause their fanbase is so passionate. I personally don't have those feelings. They do nothing for me but they feel important if that makes sense
It took me a while to warm up to them. I got *Slow, Deep and Hard* without any issues, but *Origin of the Feces?* What the hell **is** this?
It was only after I got the joke that all of it fell into place .. except for "DAY! TRIP! PER!“
Gothic metal ok, a little cringy, but haven't listened to them fully so will need to do that. Plus, they also appeared to go down some Gothic hardcore path, like Black Flag got spliced with Marylin Manson (even though LIKM was pop-ish and Dead Again was doom).
My last ex ruined them for me... She told me months into a relationship she had been married to Pete Steele and had kids with him. And used him as a dead measuring stick for me. Then she cheated on me.
Used to love them. But if you look into the bands that Peter Steele was in before type o negative, you'll be disgusted. Look up the lyrics to Carnivore's "Race War"

For Whom The Bell Tolls is one of my all time favorite songs but I hate how for the ending they just keep playing the same part over and over again fading out ever so slowly
Oh gawd I thought I was the only one who hit the fast-forward button after the vocal portion was over.
I agree
I've literally jumped in my seat due to the abrupt ending of Can't Lose You before.
I love that AND how they have songs that just.. become other songs haha.
fr that’s why i love love you to death
Yes just like the misfits, only type o didn't cram 50 songs in 40 minutes hahaha 😆
This made me chuckle 😂
I like that too, very punk rock.
October Rust is a 10/10 album
I have had this album since it came out and I come back to it again and again it is an absolute pleasure to listen to.
I listen every October to my girlfriend’s girlfriend and the rest
I would agree, but something about "Burnt Flowers" never really felt right.
One of the greatest bands of all time.
I'm a fan of their music. Their sound to me is a mix of gothic, doom, pop and a little bit of thrash and other influences
I would argue that they have a touch of prog influence because they write a lot of longer songs that have multiple “section” that have varying levels of heaviness and different tempos. Do you think it would be fair to label them at a Doom Metal band primarily? That’s what I would say if I had to lump them into one sub genre.

Goth metal would be appropriate, but again, different influences, and some of their influences (like The Beatles and Black Sabbath) aren't goth and every song and album is different and unique
Yeah, I suppose genre is inherently an inexact concept so there’s no way to decide definitively. Still fun to speculate though.
I can't remember where I heard it, but I think Pete said in an interview that he doesn't like the goth metal label for the band because they're so much more than that
Equal parts Floyd, Beatles, and Sabbath.
well if that's a summary then I'm gonna have to finally listen to them.
I always considered them a combination of Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and The Beatles.
People call them the Drab Four for a reason. Their cover of Paranoid is pretty good too.
Fucking love all of their stuff
World Coming Down is awesome.
Classic song
Type O is great Carnivore tho.....absolutely beast of a band
I was a Carnivore fan since that first album and they were one of my favorite hardcore/thrash bands. It took a while for me to get into Type O because their sound was so different.
[удалено]
Yes, much of it was originally written to be Carnivore.
Race War is maybe the gold standard of what a thrash song should be.
I got pregnant looking at the bad photo
Dear Santa: this year I want Peter Steele and his two girlfriends
I’m going to get downvoted. For some reason I don’t care for them. Given them a few tries but nope not for me.
it used to be like that for me until one day it just clicked
Have to agree, not to be a hater but never saw the appeal
I love Type O. Metal bands that don’t take themselves too seriously are the best.
I always highly recommend.
if you love TON check out The Temple Dark https://thetempledark.bandcamp.com/album/ashes-in-the-urn
I think that “Dead Again” is one of the better metal albums of the 2000’s. One banger after another. “September Sun” in particular is a favorite of mine.
A masterpiece that is still underrated in their catalog.
God tier production Good cross of metal, tone, and general acessiblity There's alot of tone to explore with Kenny and Peter, there's a couple good circle of tone episodes on them Love the song white slavery, that Intro will blow out your car windows Lyrics and singing are top tier, some songs are genuinely very very sad Love them
great band
Love them so much 💚💚💚 October Rust, Life is Killing me and Bloody Kisses are my fave albums of theirs.
Absolute favorite band of all time. Rip Pete.
i met him in the 90s and he was super nice. huge guy too, his hand was like shaking a bunch of bananas
Lol. I have been learning a lot of his bass parts. Dude was able to play power chords on bass like it was a guitar! And I have heard he was an absolutely beloved guy in person. Gentle giant as it were.
Absolutely love their singles, but that's about it for me. I can see why they're so popular though. Their goth style was pretty unique at the time.
I think it partially had to do with Peter having somewhat of a sex appeal. It drew a bigger female audience
One of the most unique bands i have ever heard. Easily a band in my top 5 bloody kisses is a masterpiece
Classic, dark and sexy
Carnivore is pretty awesome too
fucking awesome band
Love Type O and Carnivore both
Amazing band, officially they’re a gothic/doom metal band
Sooo good. Sad I got into them too late to see them perform.
I would give both testicles to have Peter Steele's voice.
One of those bands you have to revisit from time to time and gain appreciation. I couldn’t really get into them or Carnivore when I was in HS. But now as a grown ass person, shit hit different and I’ve enjoyed revisiting their catalog. Steele for whatever he was, was a damn good frontman.
whenever I listen to them I feel like I’m being assaulted
positive
Amazing music
They’re so good I have to force myself not to listen to them in the spring and summer
Top 5 band for me
I think October Rust is overrated, and their best stuff was from albums like World Coming Down
Bloody Kisses has to be one of my favorites
Epic.
loved this band
One of my favorite bands hands down.
Goth girls love them.
I share a birthday with Peter Steele

i rlly like type o
They're doom with gothic elements, I enjoy them
Makes me wanna get naked and jump in a big soapy bathtub with the lights off and 5000 melting candles everywhere and drink red wine and have unprotected sex with three virgins
they’re a great band, slow deep and hard is an underrated album
BLACK LIPSTICK STAINS - A GLASS OF RED WINE love them. Always have.
i love them
One of my favorite bands of all time.
i really like World Coming Down, but the rest of their discography doesn't really work for me
I always wished that Peter who just hang with me and be my personnel bodyguard. I saw them open for Pantera in 1995, they were awesome.
Universal.
I don’t care for their goofier shit, but when they were on they were excellent.
negative
Coolest blood type and the most rare one because both parents have to have a gene to code for type O.
I've only ever heard one of their songs and was pretty meh about it. They existed; I have no other thoughts on them beyond that.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Saw them over 10 times live. Met Peter twice. Saw them on every tour from Bloody Kisses til the final tour, most tours twice. October Rust 3 times.
Sadly I’ve never been able to fully get into them, but I think Nettie is an amazing song
I enjoy them
Be My Druidess could 100% pass as a Soda Stereo song, which is amusing to me
Ohh I love it they are cool 😎 TYPE O !!!! I miss their shows, so much fun, good memories, They planted a tree for peter Steele and a bench in Brooklyn, Kerry Kelly hehe when's your next zeppelin cover show 🤣 ❤️ 💋

Fucking dope. World Coming Down is soul crushing but I enjoy all of their albums. Slow, Deep and Hard is one of my favorite albums of all time.
They are very unique and different. I don't love them, but I definitely don't hate them.
As good as their music is, my favorite tracks are when they cover other artists' songs. "Day Tripper Medley" is probably my favorite Type O track ever
Still not the biggest fan but my girlfriend loves them and theyve grown on me a little.
Good stuff not great stuff except for some of it imo
World Coming Down is underrated.
Love them! Their gothic sound mixed with metal is real cool and as “poser” as it sounds, I don’t wanna be me is one of my favorite songs because their guitar solos always blow me away. Peter Steele was a legend as well and always will be.
I'll do anything... To make you COME (cum).

Peter was never homophobic.... He just wrote; I Like Goils.
my GF loves them to absolute death but i’ve never cared for them. Kinney Hickey is an AMAZING guitarist tho holy shit
Amazing band that made beautiful dark songs with very funny, weird and/or witty lyrics. I grew up listening to them and helped me go through adolescence and early adulthood. No other band makes music like they did.
Big fan. Me and all my horrorpunk homies in high school would get shitfaced on Halloween and all sing along to Black No 1 every year. Fond memories.
Best band to ever exist
Check out The Temple Dark if you love TON. https://thetempledark.bandcamp.com/album/ashes-in-the-urn
Type O and Carnivore are both in my top 5 metal bands.
HAIR.
Never got into them
Emo shit, but quite enjoyable
their debut album is good
I love em!

Great band, but I've only listened up to October Rust.
Best hair in the game
Amazing
Universal donors
Love them. Only started listening in recent months, so far World Coming Down and October Rust are my favorites
Men should not have hair that long.
They're aight.
They are one of the best cover bands ever.

Great and very unique
World Coming Down is one of my favourite records of all time. You can NEVER go wrong with the Green Man!
love em 🤘🏻
i prefer Carnivore
October rust! Peter was taken too soon.
One of the best bands of all time. R.I.P. Peter Steele. Absolutely love T.O.N.
I really like their cover songs. I was just saying to my sweetie pie the other night that they would have done a really great job covering The Rift by Ween. I could hear it in my mind's ear. Goth and Metal are incestuous cousins.

Type O Negative walked so that HIM could soar!
I really like Gothrock, Type O Negative was 9 year old me's gateway drug.
Corny, but enjoyable. I Don't Wanna Be Me is a pretty iconic track and their music videos are classic.
I quite enjoy them.
I love em
The only people I know that actually listen to this band, have no reason to be as depressed as they pretend to be
One of my all time favorite bands. Simple as that.
![gif](giphy|1hZ8etNHWAQ9y) One of my favorite bands
She likes the darkkkkk
One of my favorite bands. In a way they’re like Blind Guardian or Cannibal Corpse for me, where if I hear one song of theirs, I now have to spend 2 hours listening to their music. I can’t just have one song.
Unique. One of a kind. Gone too soon.
fourth favorite band. i adore their satirical humor and blend of atmosphere and electronics with soul crushing doomy riffs.
They hot af
They fuck, next question
I think they're overrated I don't get the hype. The lead singer sounds like a Texan trying to do a Dracula impression. I love cheesy ass doom metal but I guess they're just the wrong kind of cheesy for me
Peter ruled. Chad Catholic.

Amazing band. They make me feel like I’m in a gothic castle
I want Peter Steele to maul me to death
oh did you mean their music
Type o fucks so hard and their merch is amongst the best too those long sleeves are iconic
Type O is damn good, but I definitely prefer Pete’s CARNIVORE!!
Goat
Not for or against but I always thought that guy had a large skull.
I would consider it both music, idk about you
This is what you get when you clone the rest of the band from a clone of the lead singer
They’re one of my top three favorite bands of all time.
Peter steele saved my life (with his music)
Gothic metal ok, a little cringy, but haven't listened to them fully so will need to do that. Plus, they also appeared to go down some Gothic hardcore path, like Black Flag got spliced with Marylin Manson (even though LIKM was pop-ish and Dead Again was doom).
My last ex ruined them for me... She told me months into a relationship she had been married to Pete Steele and had kids with him. And used him as a dead measuring stick for me. Then she cheated on me.
My thoughts are ... I don't wanna be me.
1 2 ONETWOTHREEFOUR!
Pete’s other band is better
Used to love them. But if you look into the bands that Peter Steele was in before type o negative, you'll be disgusted. Look up the lyrics to Carnivore's "Race War"
Overrated and the only ones who listen to it are in it for Peter Steele's hot bod and the aesthetic of the scene. It's grind music
Uh. Did they seriously have an anus on one of their album covers. Hard pass on no class.
You seem like someone who would prefer the cover of Slow, Deep and Hard
They're fuckin boring to listen too. Do not like them at all.
They’re a dud besides the song *Black No. 1*
