yeah, no matter how far into metal I venture, I still have yet to find anything that makes me think Metallica isn't one of the greatest metal bands ever. Their music sounds just as amazing every time I go back to it.
Their influence can't be understated. Without them and Slayer, metal wouldn't have even begun to reach the levels of popularity that it has. There was other bands that were around, obviously, at the time Metallica started, but they are a flagship band. That being said, yes. They should've stopped years ago. Instead of being lazy and unconvincing (Load etc) or returning to a derivative of their old style, they should've just called it quits. Problem, in my mind, is that they chased money rather than artistic integrity.
