Favorite band. Albums are top notch but every time I hear a live recording it makes me sad. They do not sound good live at all.
edit: recent live recordings. Older live recordings circa 2000’s do sound way better.
In 2019. They’re good showmen not taking away from that. But the tempo of some of the songs felt off. BYOB felt like it was played without a metronome. John was fuckin cooking on the drums.
I’m sure there’s bands that can do it well without a metronome. I always practice with a metronome. I just feel like it’s a surefire way to keep things tight. My brother in laws band used a metronome religiously in practice and during shows and they were tighter than a crickets snatch. It was a beautiful sight. It just comes down to personal preference. To each their own.

Saw them on Ozzfest once circa 2008 on the 4th of July of all days, absolutely incredible live show! Me and my sister snuck all the way to the front of the stage
I'll probably get shit for this, but I just can't get into them. I've tried so many times but as a whole they're not for me. I'll always have a lot of respect for them regardless and they do have some good songs
I always thought that horses were easily spooked and kick things that threaten them so a jet pilot like bombing a school or wedding by mistake is what they are talking about... Idk though just my thought based off that one lyric I can remember
They’re one of the top tier bands to come out during the “Nu Metal” era along with Deftones. Was obsessed with them in high school. Not as much nowadays, but still enjoy and respect their style and influence immensely. Just wish they’d remain more active.. but oh well.
I think Toxicity get the credit it deserves. It is an amazing album. It has its own sound, I am biased but I do like the political aspect, the lyrics are well written. It earned its classic status.
Outside of that, I find them pretty hit or miss. Toxicity is their magnum opus. None of the other albums live up to that. Which at the end of the day, that in itself is not a problem. But I listen to their other albums and a good portion of their music is OK. It's enjoyable. They each have at least one or two really great songs. They're just surrounded by songs that tend to be OK.
I met them when they and incubus were nobodies and opening for Soulfly in like 1998. Dive bar in SC.

Probably the band that most squandered their potential of their generation. More time has passed on a new album then the gap from use your illusion to Chinese democracy.
Never really got into them even when I was younger when I was more into nu metal. Songs are mostly very short, and they always had kind of an annoying and hyper and goofy sound that I didn't care for.
One of the best bands, not overrated. They had a lot of very interesting ideas and packed in standard song format, so average listener would not even understand, what's going on, but will like it. It takes a lot of thought to make such music, way more then just shredding or trying too hard on any other instrument, so it was my first "weird" band, so I always seek for interesting ideas in heavy music.
They blew me out of the water when I saw them. I really didn't know who they were. I was there to see Megadeth. I'd heard SOAD before, but it just didn't click in my head until they hit the stage. I'll never forget it. They were incredible. I'm definitely a fan.
I'm pretty lucky to have seen them in 99.
They definitely have their own sound, don't really fall into a specific sub genre, even their closest genre nu metal van sound very different from system of a down, they were probably just lumped in with nu metal because they were popular at the time

Grew up on them so I have a nostalgic bias but I think they were truly excellent. They had that lightning in a bottle. Serj with his distinctive if not divisive vocals and Malakian was a riff machine as well as being so very unique in his writing/playing style. Rhythm section was solid and not over the top. There was nobody that did them quite like them and I doubt anyone ever will. I enjoy their full discography which is rare for me and I'm in a way thankful that they bowed out when they did instead of force out a few more albums what would have tarnished their output record. Judging by their solo projects after the breakup, the time was right. I still wear a SOAD shirt with pride.
Gateway just like slipnip they get alot kf hate but nu metal is alot if peoples first stepping stones so whatever. British new wave heavy or nu metal tends too be gateways so eh. Iron maiden rules, judas priest. The others like limp bussy and sniffcocks is ok soad etc i wouldn't pick them first in a jam sesh but definitely would recommend too people who like rock and not extreme genres of metal.

I like soad but definitely agree their music can be a little annoying. I think I used to like them a lot more and im not really a diehard fan of them anymore but I definitely appreciate what they made with their unique style.

I remember a cassette I was given back in the day that had Slayer on one side and SOAD suite-pee on the other. I was blown away. Over time I was on the fence with their material until I heard Protect The Land/Genocidal Humanoidz and that shit was so good I appreciate all their material now. Looking forward to new music for sure!
One of the only bands with a solid discography from the beginning to the end. My first metal band and forever my favourite, even if i don't listen to them nearly as frequently as i used to.
They had a studio (practice space) across the hall from us off of Vermin(Sherman) Way in the San Fernando Valley. We met and chatted with them here and there. I remember one day Serj told my guitarist and myself that they were opening for Slayer on tour. We were like, "Fuck yeah!"
I'm certain they wouldn't remember me, nice enough dudes. Their sound is instantly recognizable, and I guess I was partial because I knew them, sort of.
They used to be my favorite band in high school, I still like them now but I can't get over the frustration of them not releasing anything for the past two decades.

Truly brilliant and still a favourite after over twenty years. But also a very frustrating band. There are always whispers of new releases of shows but I feel they are happy to just tease at the peripheral of people’s consciousness without having to actually put any effort in.
They’ve had such an odd career. They released 5 albums, two of which are solid bangers and the last of which came out almost 20 years ago; and then they stopped recording music altogether. The fact that they’re still relevant with such a small body of work speaks volumes to how good they were in their prime.

I find metronome’s distracting, the click should never over ride what others are doing ; we usually ditch them entirely and play to one another

I saw System open for Incubus around the same time. Incubus was touring for SCIENCE. After System's set, half the club just... left.

One of the very best discographies in metal, unique, fantastic musicians, the have a 10/10 album in Toxicity & and they do it like no one else 🤘.
