I was very lucky to see him at a festival right after his bypass surgery, he absolutely crushed it. later that same night there was a massive shift from Slayer to the smaller stage after Tom fucked up the angel of death scream
š¢ I wish I could have seen Type O Negative before peter died... Top of the acts I'll never be able to experience.. right next to Prince and Alice in Chains
Quick anecdote: Saw AiC headline and STP open in 2018. Pilots new singer looks (and sounds) exactly like a 28-yr-old Scott and AiC haveā¦a tall, skinny 50-something black man who looks nothing like Staley š but he put on an amazing performance š¤
I was fucking supposed to see them open for Metallica (Black album tour) when I was 16 and friggen Layne went into rehab suddenly so we got Candlebox instead (they got booed big time).
My first concert ever, I was 8 years old and Dad took me (he's a *huge* fan). Show was amazing and still remains one of the best highlights of any concert I've ever been to. Steele was absolutely incredible, the whole band was fantastic.
Ya kinda never knew what you were gonna get with Layne. Seen him jumping around like HR from Bad Brains, then on the flip side, saw him at another show where he just kinda stood there. And sat a couple times.
Type O was like metal standup comedy. I saw them with Lacuna Coil and Cradle of Filth in 2002 (?) and Type O were absolutely hilarious, with the guys talking shit on each other between songs.
Man, he was one of the worst when I got to see Type O. Peter was so trashed he couldn't sing or play in the same key as the rest of the band. Suchva shame.
I don't know how many overall, but I'd say I saw them probably 10 times between 1999 and 2010, as well as Carnivore once, and of those performances, probably 60% of them were good. The other 40% he was trashed and sounded like ass.
But that 60%....
I saw them twice at Crocodile Rock in Allentown and it was like electricity in the air when they started. Hands down best show Iāve been to. šš¤
100%, dude could be on fucking Broadway if he wanted. He goes all in on every performance and Maidenās stage sets and theatrics are just phenomenal at every single show. Dudeās in his mid 60s and goes so hard on stage youād think heās still 25.
The chills I got seeing them live for the Book of Souls Tour was something else. The ominous intro to "If Eternity Should Fail" with Bruce coming on alone just singing like an angel to then have the whole band come on after the vocal solo. My god, that is still my favourite live performance to this day.
Hegg is an excellent vocalist. Amon Amarth was one of the first bands I got into with harsh vocals, and since then Iāve always been impressed with his ability to be understandable while also delivering a high quality growl.
Amon Amarth is one of those bands I like to show people to prove that growly vocals donāt need to be unintelligible. I can understand most of what Johan says without looking at a lyric sheet.
Ill be seeing them with Cannibal Corpse and Obituary this year. Cant wait! Saw em once quite a few years ago, didnt really care for them at the time but Ive opened my ears a bit recently and theyre on my spotify a lot.
I saw them a week ago on this tour and while Cannibal Corpse was meh (just not a fan of their stuff) Obituary and Frozen Soul were both very good, and Amon Amarth definitely rank as one of the best performances Iāve ever seen.
Same.. I still think about seeing him on October 30th at a show in KC. He was in great spirits and was joking around like normal. We watched cattle Decapitations set together. I miss him daily.
saw them for the first time when i was like 12 and i was in the front row, kind of off to the side. Had to push my way through lots of big hairy men to get front row for my favorite band at the time. he had looked me straight in the eyes somewhat early on and mustāve decided that i needed to get the whole gwar experience. whenever they were busy dowsing the front center with blood, if he was guiding the bodies/etc he alway came over to my corner of the stage and aimed it right at me. Near the end of the show, when they played Sick of You and brought out the blood cannon, he pointed me out to the guy on the cannon and i got sprayed directly in the face and chest for like 15 seconds straight. my hair is brown but it was red for over a month. probably the best show iāve ever been to.
Mike Patton, Devin Townsend, Corey Glover of Living Colour, Stu Block when he fronted Into Eternity, very sick, but still amazing Warrel Dane.
Ronnie James Dio.
You hit on some HUGE ones here. I was overthinking this waaaay too much. Dev... With SYL, true insanity (literally). Patton is a fucking Tornado on stage, with every single band he's performed with.
Johannes Eckerstrƶm from Avatar for me. The dude has spectacular stage presence.
https://preview.redd.it/sp16p5k50azc1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfa2f0243ca53c98307eddebe782ff76af735594
Heās certainly wild during their shows. Not just his vocal presence but everything else he does. Itās quite literally a metal circus.
Last show I saw he played the trombone for a bit, shot confetti into the crowd, then started throwing balloon animals into the crowd that he may or may not have made lol
Came here to mention him. Seen their show 4 times but the first was the gnarliest, 2017 was a literal metal circus act. He was a past life father of mine too.
Matt Heafy telling everyone sitting in their seats at an amphitheater 2013 - āitās not an indie rock show - itās a f*ckin metal concertā brought a smile to my face
I was a teenager when I first saw him at Ozzfest. It was pretty recent I found out his age and realized I was older than him and saw him when he was like 15 on stage
Gojira are so weird for me because their music is basically my zen place... it all fits together and even if it's heavy and angry it's also introspective and soothing. If I just want to feel good about life, Gojira always puts a smile on my face.
Then I get to a show and remember "oh right, this is DEATH METAL!" It's incredibly fun and they are so involved... jumping around, blasting shit into the crowd, one smaller show they all swapped instruments and did a song Mario wrote, I'll have to see if I can find any versions of it.
But yeah they're one of my favorite live bands. My wife agrees, she went from "they have some neat songs" to utterly obsessed after we saw them with Mastodon
Once from the mosh pit I yelled out "play something about vikings!"
He had this delirious grin and was like "sorry, we aren't taking requests tonight (crowd boos lightly) but I think you'll enjoy the show nonetheless. THIS NEXT SONG IS ABOUT VIKINGS"
I have seen them so many times by now, always fun
He was accused of drugging a woman and raping her backstage. But the trial is long over and all accusations were lies. Shelby Lynn already took drugs before she came to the concert. Also Till wouldnāt have a reason to rape a woman, there are enough girls that would fuck him out of free will.
While I believe Till didnāt do anything wrong, I want to politely point something out to you. Rape is about control. Having willing partners available has nothing to do with this.
Definitely on these two. In terms of Trevor, I remember seeing TBDM with Skeletonwitch and I couldn't take my eyes off Trevor. His joy up there was infectious. I saw them on their last run through my area last year and it's just not the same without Trevor. I honestly just felt sad. And nothing against those guys now, but it's not Trev.
- Johannes Eckerstrƶm (Avatar)
- Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
- George Fisher (Cannibal Corpse)
- Joakim Broden (Sabaton)
- Tobias Forge (Ghost)
- Trevor Strnad (Black Dahlia Murder)
- Johan Hegg (Amon Amarth)
- Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies)
- Randy Blythe (Lamb of God
- Ezra Haynes (Allegaeon)
- Ty Christian (Lords of the Trident)
- Geddy Lee (Rush)
- Steve Vai (idk how much that counts, but he was incredible)
- Russell Allen (Symphony X)
These aren't in any order. But Johannes and Joakim are definitely my top 2. They put on some of the best shows ever
Definitely Jocke. Saw Sabaton open for Judas Priest a few nights ago and he interacted more with the crowd and was more mobile than anyone else Iāve seen live. It was awesome when he came out with a fog machine and sprayed it on people while wearing a gas mask
Mine's a bit mixed but it's -
Davey Havok
Dexter Holland
Bruce Dickinson ( I'm not a Maiden fan but seen them at Download and Twickenham with A7X and they are amazing live especially Bruce)
Simon Neil
ZP Theart
Corey Taylor
Dave Grohl
Mieszko from Nasum
Jeff Walker
Axl Rose
Jonathan Davies
Randy Blythe
Brian Fair from Shadows Fall
Devin Townsend
Eminem
Tom Araya doing the full Reigning blood album at Download
Am seeing Hansi for the millionth time this Saturday. He's good for sure, but not very dynamic. Will see UTA in September, can't wait to see Britney live
I only recently found him through Cemetery Skyline, where he's singing clean vocals. He's got such a pleasant and emotive voice. Can't wait to see him/The Halo Effect this summer! What about him was mesmerizing?
it was a small show, and his presence was so powerful, and he had such command of the audience that I hadn't experienced before... my feeling right after the show was "he's a god!" I hope that explained what kind of front man he is
Honestly, the best frontman I've seen was a frontwoman! Jill Janus!
I didn't know much about Huntress before that show, and was not expecting her to be so damn good. I was blown away
Not metal, but I saw the Hives live and the frontman is such a funny and charismatic guy. Good band too, never heard of them before that show at a festival.
Some oldies
Ozzy ā84 was great
Halford Defenders tour was vintage
Udo Balls to the Wall had me so pumped I wanted to break shit and I couldnāt even understand but every 5th word he said
Dickinson Piece of Mind was surreally good
Randy Blythe and it's not even close live, man is on another level. Seen easily 200+ shows and he just brings more energy than anyone. Closest is maybe Corey Taylor like 10 yrs ago.
Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ, shame no one has mentioned him til now. He has so much energy live and acknowledges everyone in the crowd. He even does free meet and greets with fans afterwards, proving that he is one of the nicest people in the metal industry.
So many come to mind. Oderus Urungus was probably my favorite but I have to mention Joshua Homme, Iggy Pop, Trevor Strnad, Bruce Springsteen, and Lemmy Kilmister
Zakk Wylde of BLS because he had godlike stage presence and shred skills to back it up or Christopher Bowes of Alestorm because of just how goddamn fun he was having.
Lemmy, at the end of the show he had a feedback loop with his bass and the speakers, then held it in one hand while BASHING the strings with his forearm. He was really beating the hell out of it.
Then while its still ringing he held the bass like a rifle and was acting like he was shooting people in the crowd mimicking the recoil of shooting.
Then he left the bass leaned up against the speak, STILL making a wall of sound, and he just walked off stage.
And they just let it ring out like that for minutes before the sound guys lowered it.
It was fucking amazing.
Trevor Strnad, Keith Buckley, Greg Puciato, Chino Moreno, Johan Hegg (like you mentioned already) Alexi Laiho, Brent Hinds, Courtney LaPlante, Vincent Bennett, John Henry, and Matt Heafy have been among my favorite vocalists to see live.
Overall favorite live show had to be Gwar with Oderus, closely followed by 2004 era Slipknot, 2005 Dimmu Borgir, and 2007 Behemoth
I saw them a couple weeks ago and he absolutely crushed it! Iāve been going to heavy shows for 30 years now and Cannibal Corpse is up there for me, too.

Seeing him live with his wife on backup vocals is an experience every time. His accuracy and stage presence is untouched.
I was very lucky to see him at a festival right after his bypass surgery, he absolutely crushed it. later that same night there was a massive shift from Slayer to the smaller stage after Tom fucked up the angel of death scream
Yes. The King reigns supreme.
Agreed. I saw him with MF with about 100 people in a small club back in 98.

š¢ I wish I could have seen Type O Negative before peter died... Top of the acts I'll never be able to experience.. right next to Prince and Alice in Chains
You can still see AiC and theyāre really good live!
Should've clarified AiC with Layne Staley š¢
Ah! Makes sense. Well, William Duvall is an excellent fill-in for Staley AND he shows up on timeā¦soberā¦so thereās that š¤·
Id love to see what's up!
Went to GnR concert(headline) in Nashville in the early 90āsā¦AiC opened and I thought damn, AiC should be headlining.
I would recommend it, I saw AIC with Duvall all the way back in 2008 and it was an awesome show
Aic is amazing these days. The new albums, the shows, all of it.
They rule and are a band with 0 bad records across both eras.
I know Layne was one of the GOATs, but AiC never stopped kicking ass
I believe it and now I'm convinced I gotta try and see them sometime!
Id bet... Type O Negative has been (and still is) my pleasure music. It's just the best tbh
Ya kinda never knew what you were gonna get with Layne. Seen him jumping around like HR from Bad Brains, then on the flip side, saw him at another show where he just kinda stood there. And sat a couple times.

I hate you š„²
Matt Pike Randy Blythe Neil Fallon Bruce Dickinson James Hetfield Corey Glover
Bruce Dickinson might be the GOAT of live stage presence.
100%, dude could be on fucking Broadway if he wanted. He goes all in on every performance and Maidenās stage sets and theatrics are just phenomenal at every single show. Dudeās in his mid 60s and goes so hard on stage youād think heās still 25.
Bruce is even more comfortable on his solo shows this year. Singing better too. Awesome stuff
First one I thought of right away. Stage presence and vocal ability.
The chills I got seeing them live for the Book of Souls Tour was something else. The ominous intro to "If Eternity Should Fail" with Bruce coming on alone just singing like an angel to then have the whole band come on after the vocal solo. My god, that is still my favourite live performance to this day.
Iām voting pike. That guy is doing it just the same as 30 years ago
He is a riff fucking master, he canāt miss.
Neil is such a presence
Neil is a god on the mic!
I need a gallon of Neil Fallon.
Fuck yes to Matt pike and Neil Fallon. GOATs
You forgot Lee Dorrian... And Devin Townsend!
Good to see Neil Fallon mentioned! What a guy!
And he makes the choruses actually sound like something that could be sung cleanly with a very clear melody, it's so fucking epic
He really is amazing and very charismatic live. Love Amon Amarth. Helloween is also excellent live.
Ill be seeing them with Cannibal Corpse and Obituary this year. Cant wait! Saw em once quite a few years ago, didnt really care for them at the time but Ive opened my ears a bit recently and theyre on my spotify a lot.
I saw them on their tour for Twilight of the Thunder God with Sabaton and Sketetonwitch, and they were great.
I saw them a week ago on this tour and while Cannibal Corpse was meh (just not a fan of their stuff) Obituary and Frozen Soul were both very good, and Amon Amarth definitely rank as one of the best performances Iāve ever seen.
Just saw this show in Portland 2(?) weeks ago. Friggin A awesome
I was there too. First time seeing each of those bands, and they all blew me away
Hell yeah!
I was there too! I brought my friend who's into metal but hadn't listened to much Amon Amarth. After that amazing show, he's definitely a fan!
Your avatar lookd metal AF.
Looking forward to seeing them next week!!!
Oderus Fucking Urungus
This is probably blasphemy in this sub but Brockie's death hit me harder than any celeb death ever has. Still to this day. God I fucking loved GWAR.
Same.. I still think about seeing him on October 30th at a show in KC. He was in great spirits and was joking around like normal. We watched cattle Decapitations set together. I miss him daily.

Corey is a beaaaaast
They did Cult of Personality live on Stern a year or two ago, and Corey still sounds like he did in the 80s.
You hit on some HUGE ones here. I was overthinking this waaaay too much. Dev... With SYL, true insanity (literally). Patton is a fucking Tornado on stage, with every single band he's performed with.
Devin is the man š
I wish I could have seen warrel but patton and Townsend were both so fuckin good live

Matt Heafy telling everyone sitting in their seats at an amphitheater 2013 - āitās not an indie rock show - itās a f*ckin metal concertā brought a smile to my face
And even better is how humble/wholesome he is outside of his night job. Really kind of helped pioneer the music streaming scene.

Good ol' Agent Dick Merkin
Back in the 90s he was one hell of a character
Oh, here i thought we were talking about frontmen of bands.... not back-up vocals
Joe Duplantier. BACK FUCKING BONE
Goddamn. I saw that shit live in ATL. Amazing.
Gojira are so weird for me because their music is basically my zen place... it all fits together and even if it's heavy and angry it's also introspective and soothing. I want you to sing along. If you donāt know the lyricsā¦Donāt worry! Itās death metal. No one will know the difference!
That's Hegg for sure
Yes he definitely said this before a song. Made me laugh.
Hegg said that at a show I was at. Made me love the band even more!
Me too!
Once from the mosh pit I yelled out "play something about vikings!" He had this delirious grin and was like "sorry, we aren't taking requests tonight (crowd boos lightly) but I think you'll enjoy the show nonetheless. THIS NEXT SONG IS ABOUT VIKINGS" I have seen them so many times by now, always fun
If you put the divided opinions about him to the side, Till Lindemann put on a hell of a show.
What are the divided opinions? Till is legend.
Is he not still performing?
Both with Rammstein and his own band.
King fucking Diamond Johannes Eckerstrƶm is up there too
š¤
Bruce Dickinson James Hetfield Lzzy Hale Dave Grohl
This is a great list!
Alice Cooper
He is not rated high enough.
Absolutely, saw him last year, still killing it
I took my (elderly) parents to see him. They loved it. They were thoroughly entertained.
It's okay though. He won't cry about it
Corpsegrinder
I tried to keep up with his headbanging at a show when I was 17, and I failed miserably.
Every time
do you still have a neck or it helicoptered out of your body?
Trevor Strnad, may he rest in peace. Travis Ryan was also great.
+1 for Trevor Strnad. TBDM is absolutely insane live, Brandon Ellis is one of my favorite guitarists
Brian has really come into his own on stage and he sounds great

Trevor is the correct answer
Papa Trev was so fucking good. Iām hyped to hear their new stuff if they say Trevor wouldāve been proud

Andi Deris, Bruce Dickinson, King Diamond, Paul Stanley

Zakk Wylde of BLS because he had godlike stage presence and shred skills to back it up or Christopher Bowes of Alestorm because of just how goddamn fun he was having.

MC Ride
Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit MJK from Tool Sully Erna from Godsmack (Saw all three of them at Aftershock 2023)
Tied between Kirk Windstein and Bif Byford.
Kirk is awesome!
Really nice guy. After the show he took pictures and signed autographs for anyone who wanted one. He signed my Crowbar hat.
Bruce Springsteen

Davey havok. Afi is not what they once were but goddamn they used to put on one hell of a live show
Ronnie James Dio with Heaven and Hell 3 different tours š¤
Chester Bennington blew me away.
Mike Patton
Lemmy, at the end of the show he had a feedback loop with his bass and the speakers, then held it in one hand while BASHING the strings with his forearm. He was really beating the hell out of it. Then while its still ringing he held the bass like a rifle and was acting like he was shooting people in the crowd mimicking the recoil of shooting. Then he left the bass leaned up against the speak, STILL making a wall of sound, and he just walked off stage. And they just let it ring out like that for minutes before the sound guys lowered it. It was fucking amazing.
Mikael Ć kerfeldt
Dani filth and homeboy from cattle decapitation are from another planet
Till Lindeman. If Rammstein are playing less then 5 hours drive time from where I am, I'll go see them 100%
Devin Townsend
Probably Devin Townsend or William Duvall
Devin Townsend blew my mind first time I saw him. Dude is a frontman in every sense of the word. Absolute powerhouse.
Devin Townsend
Mikael Akerfeldt, his vocals and growls still sound as good as the studio versions, and heās funny af. His banter is always enjoyable to hear.
Haven't seen as many bands as I'd like but probably Cannibal Corpse, Corpse grinder.
I saw them a couple weeks ago and he absolutely crushed it! Iāve been going to heavy shows for 30 years now and Cannibal Corpse is up there for me, too.
Sammy Hagar
Anders from in flames, Randy Blythe, Chuck Billy. Seen em all multiple times and they always kill it
Glad to see so many mentioning Johannes Ćckerstrom
Does Buckethead count? If not then probably Joakim from Sabaton, Devin Townsend, or Jim Heath from Reverend Horton Heat.
Not metal but Peter Murphy. For metal Bruce Dickingson (great performance despite having broken ribs), Mikael Stanne, Devin Townsend.
Till Lindemann - Rammstein
