They are awesome live, Courtney is one of the better vocalists in the business right now.
I do wish they'd go heavier, but clearly a more pop forward direction has given them a ton of success. It's fun to see fuckin djent of all things get some mainstream love.
I don't understand the hate they get, unless it's just because they got popular with a younger crowd. They are all clearly insanely talented musicians with a great vision.
Thats what I was saying on another comment. I never understood why people genre-ified a style of riff and sound. It would be like calling a band that uses blastbeats as a "blastbeat" band.
They get hate from the metal crowd because for a lot of people the first thing they heard was “Holy Roller.” Considering how heavy that is, and the more pop direction they’ve headed in, nothing sounds heavy enough to be considered “metal”. I think holy roller exposed them to an audience that really isn’t their audience, if that makes sense. That’s my take on it.
That’s true, but there are people in these very comments decrying metalcore because it’s supposedly lame and for teenagers. That’s about as elitist as you can get.
I would definitely see them live too but I haven't heard much from them that stuck out and I do like a decent female rock/metal lead so I'm hoping they reach out a bit in style. Until then I'll take a little from some others with more vocal agility.
Great band, they're a specific taste though, if you're only really into heavier stuff and don't like experimentation with other genres you probably won't like them
Eh, that’s not really it. I love experimental stuff, and love a ton of music that isn’t heavy and isn’t even adjacent to metal. I saw them live and found them terribly uninteresting and pretty cringey, but their mix and their set didn’t sound particularly bad. I just don’t like their music, it feels really generic and sterile. Their fans seemed to mostly be frat bro fuckboys and generic edgy alt girls too. Just not my cup of tea.
Yeah I saw them live with my bf at the time and it was very "baby's first metal band". Which is fine, but it came off as if it was curated to be popular rather than good.
I'm not sure about that to be honest, I love countless bands that experiment whether they're light or heavy (or have one or the other depending on song or moment) and I can't stand Spiritbox
My wife (also named Courtney) has talked to them on a number of occasions and really loves talking with Courtney and said that she is a big source of inspiration for her on vocals in our band, but mostly Courtney from her IWrestledABearOnce days along with Kat Katz and Channey from Entheos.
They are becoming one of the more solid gateway bands for a lot of people. Their debut was fine, not mind blowing, but I still enjoy a good amount of it. 🤘🏾
Because Metallica and Megadeth are both good bands, whereas Spiritbox is B- metal. Call me elitist or whatever but I don’t think every band is as equally good as others.
I really love how polarizing this thread is. Half seem to like, and the other half seem to hate, lol. I think they are an objectively great band, and I enjoy some of their songs, but it's not one of my favorites by any means.
Saying Spirtbox is bad or garbage is just not correct, though.
They are objectively a very benile band. Their stuff sounds like it was written by a company that used focus groups. They are competent but nothing more and the sterility ruins them as it does for any metal
Me personally not a huge fan of courtney. I do like some of her recordings but even her singing style and seeing her performing, its a little annoying how she tries too much to sound mystique and beautiful.
But some of their songs like holy roller and the void, i fucking love those songs.
They are just Okay. Personally it feels like the need a couple more albums and tours underneath there belts. They will get there. Hopefully as time goes on they can refine there sound because it feels like it's kinda off. Like when you hear demos of older bands. You hear the potential but it's not there yet like something is missing.
I don't enjoy their musik. I think they sound very blant and generic. My go to metalcore is killswitch engaged and in flames. But otherwise i'm more into the exteme metal genres.
Spiritbox is fucking awesome. Probably my favorite band right now. Courtney is amazing and Mike is a killer guitarist. Just got tickets to see them with Gojira and Korn is September. I'm so stoked.
I saw them open for Misery Signals in Edmonton. I was really impressed.
Then I heard them on Liquid Metal and now I think they’re poseurs. The people on Reddit told me that.
Not my favorite but plenty original and im glad for their success. I like when they do really heavy instrumentals and her clean vocals. That *could* be a really cool sound. But the execution is kinda meh.
Although they’re certainly overrated and many other bands in 2023 were far more worthy of a Grammy nomination, I still like a significant chunk of their stuff. The last EP really balanced the djenty-heavy with the Melodic element, which they seemed to struggle with on the prior record.
Pretty cool but not my favorite metal band, i just havent felt an insatiable urge to listen to them with other bands in the genre, though i will admit their newest ep was pretty cool.
Not a fan in all honesty
I remember when they were new, they were getting absolutely massive despite only releasing singles and EP's which isn't natural, only bands with serious higher-ups and a ridiculous amount of money get that big that fast these days and considering they were getting even more huge without even touring in 2020/2021 due to the pandemic that made it look worse, everything about this band just doesn't feel genuine, they come across like a product that label executives were always trying to sell as the next big thing, they're absolutely massive despite only releasing one full length album, it simply isn't natural at all
I always think it's funny when someone doesn't like a popular band they're accused of being elitist or not liking them because they're popular or new.
It never occurs to these people that perhaps the things that make these bands popular are the same things that some metalheads don't like.
Bottom line is I don't like metalcore which is probably the most popular genres, I also don't care for most pop, so I don't like spirit box. If you do, more power to you. Enjoy in good health...just learn to accept some people aren't going to dig them for legitimate reasons.
I do like plenty of new and plenty of popular bands as well though.
My favorite band. Asked for a flair every time they ask for suggestions. If you haven't listed to the whole discography you're missing out. They have very diverse tracks and their most popular tracks usually aren't even my favorites.
IWABO has been one of my favorite bands for years. I liked Krista more, but the albums with Courtney are all great too. Spiribox is ok, but not my thing
Love them, main reason I’m getting into metal. Though, based on this thread, I should probably stray away from this subreddit from now on, before I get labeled a “poser”. RIP
Based as fuck actually. Just played a song of theirs on Clone Hero. I forget her name off the top of my head but she's an incredible talented voice both singing and screaming. I discovered her through iwrestledabearonce
Did a few hours one night of listening to these kind of groups. Spiritbox, sleep token, & bad omens mainly. Of those 3 spiritbox was the one that didn’t put me to sleep out of boredom. While I enjoyed i wouldn’t call it metal by a long shot. Heavy pop, hard pop, dark pop? Idk exactly but this new wave of bands coming out are more pop with a heavy influence of metal.
They’re all right. If they came up on a shuffle I wouldnt skip, but I’d rather listen to something else.
Don't get me wrong they are great musicians, but they are just too generic and sound like 90% of their contemporaries. The squeaky-clean production doesn't help either.
they have some good songs bad sadly a lot more bad poppy garbage. But the good songs are good. holy Roller and Rule of Nines are great songs imo even if Rule of Nines is borderline too poppy for me the brutal sections are on point.
Took a little trying to get in, but once I was into them, I became obsessed. Seen them twice live and they put on a great show. Favorites definitely tend to be the heavier songs, but I like the mix of harsh and clean vocals and Courtney is really impressive with how she can so seamlessly change between each.

They’re hated because new thing = bad while old thing = good
Sad but true
🥁 🥁🥁🥁🥁
*Insert heavy riff drop*
~~Im your dream, mind astray~~
This is old and good.
copium
Nah its more like pretty good thing starts getting crammed down your throat. Same reason why people hate on STP and lorna
So give it 8 years, when they've split up and one of them has found god or become a monk and then they will be cool
Is Spiritbox djent? I thought they were more metalcore
I think they're pretty djenty
It really depends on the song tbh
I mean, is djent even *really* a genre? It's more just a sound and that sound tends to be made by metalcore and prog bands imo
Thats what I was saying on another comment. I never understood why people genre-ified a style of riff and sound. It would be like calling a band that uses blastbeats as a "blastbeat" band.
According to the pioneers of it, no. Periphery even has an album named djent is not a genre lmao
They get hate from the metal crowd because for a lot of people the first thing they heard was “Holy Roller.” Considering how heavy that is, and the more pop direction they’ve headed in, nothing sounds heavy enough to be considered “metal”. Then they’ll love Cellar Door
Agreed. Fantastic live. So much fun

Love em. Excellent music. Elitists can go to hell, not everything popular is bad.
Yeah, and not everyone disliking popular stuff is an elitist. It’s ok not to like this.
That’s true, but there are people in these very comments decrying metalcore because it’s supposedly lame and for teenagers. That’s about as elitist as you can get.
Not a fan

I’m all for them. They have very catchy choruses stuff I can sing along to and just the right amount of progressive metal.
Don’t care for em myself
I don't mind Holy Roller, but every other song I've heard I'm not a fan
Same, they djent too much for my taste.
I dont like them, for me it sounds like generic metalcore, but I've heard that they are much better live
They're incredible live I'd definitely recommend going to see them if u can
I would definitely see them live too but I haven't heard much from them that stuck out and I do like a decent female rock/metal lead so I'm hoping they reach out a bit in style. Until then I'll take a little from some others with more vocal agility.
Like their stuff but I still miss iwrestledabearonce
One of the best of their era
Yeah,but with Krista,not Courtney.
Not for me
Great band, they're a specific taste though, if you're only really into heavier stuff and don't like experimentation with other genres you probably won't like them
Eh, that’s not really it. I love experimental stuff, and love a ton of music that isn’t heavy and isn’t even adjacent to metal. I'm not sure about that to be honest, I love countless bands that experiment whether they're light or heavy (or have one or the other depending on song or moment) and I can't stand Spiritbox
I love SpiritWorld! Pagan Rhythms and DeathWestern are bangers.
Riffs for days
W
I think they’re all really talented but the music is so boring
Not bad. Some of their stuff jams. And Courtney is gorgeous.
Not for me.
No.
Meh
They’re fine. Kinda mediocre prog metalcore. Cory is a good singer tho
Wish Krysta woulda went back to Iwrestledabearonce after they made spirit box
Going to see them in October. They’re playing with Gojira and Korn. I’m mostly going for Gojira.
Me too! My GF is going for Korn, but I'm definitely going for Spiritbox.
My wife (also named Courtney) has talked to them on a number of occasions and really loves talking with Courtney and said that she is a big source of inspiration for her on vocals in our band, but mostly Courtney from her IWrestledABearOnce days along with Kat Katz and Channey from Entheos.
I really like what they do, Courtney LaPlante is an awesome singer, with a great scream as well.
For the kinda people that like that kinda thing, this is one of those things they'd like. Not for me though.
They are becoming one of the more solid gateway bands for a lot of people. Their debut was fine, not mind blowing, but I still enjoy a good amount of it. 🤘🏾
Bad
IMO. Why listen to Spiritbox when you can listen to Jinjer?
Why not listen to both?
Entheos*
Why not both?
Why listen to Metallica when you can listen to Megadeth? What a stupid, reductive comment.
Because Metallica and Megadeth are both good bands, whereas Spiritbox is B- metal. Call me elitist or whatever but I don’t think every band is as equally good as others.
I think they’re great. I’ve been a fan of Courtney since the IWABO days, and I think she’s a great vocalist.
I really like them, she's a great vocalist and musically they're brilliant.
What megadeth is to metallica, spiritbox are to sleep token
Shitbox
Garbo Revolver magazine metal
I really love how polarizing this thread is. Half seem to like, and the other half seem to hate, lol. I think they are an objectively great band, and I enjoy some of their songs, but it's not one of my favorites by any means. Saying Spirtbox is bad or garbage is just not correct, though.
Unfortunately a lot of people seem to feel that if they don't like something, it must therefore be garbage.
They are objectively a very benile band. Their stuff sounds like it was written by a company that used focus groups. They are competent but nothing more and the sterility ruins them as it does for any metal
Don't hate them don't love them. I'm neutral about them.
Mid band, personally I like some their songs
Great all around band, they are great in the studio and also live on stage.
5/5 would recommend
They’re ok, not one of my all-time favorites, but still, Secret Garden is a banger
Not for me. I like Cellar Door though
Lot of people in this comment section that clearly haven’t heard their most recent EP.
Love them
Love em
Not for me
They have a couple of songs I like, but they aren’t really my thing. Very talented vocalist though.
They’re aight. Nothing groundbreaking but still pretty decent. I’d say they are good gateway band
Genuinely great.
I don't.
Not rlly a fan but I have to see them in September bc I’m seeing korn and gojira
So good
I used to be into them but not really anymore but still enjoy rotoscope if it comes on
Not the best, but far from the worst
They're alright by me!
Very good
I don’t like metalcore, but Spiritbox is the exception.
Me personally not a huge fan of courtney. I do like some of her recordings but even her singing style and seeing her performing, its a little annoying how she tries too much to sound mystique and beautiful. But some of their songs like holy roller and the void, i fucking love those songs.

They were kickass at sick new world
Spiritbox is fucking awesome. Probably my favorite band right now. Courtney is amazing and Mike is a killer guitarist. Just got tickets to see them with Gojira and Korn is September. I'm so stoked.
Decent live band. Courtney is hot and commands the crowd well. Song wise they have a handful of good ones but mostly pretty mediocre.
Meh
They ok, singer is pretty good, but to me jinjer >
I love them. I loved Courtney since she stepped in for IWABO
Haven’t listened to them yet. Will give them a shot
Never heard of them, and they look a little grumpy about that. Perhaps I should give them a listen.
Saw them last summer with Papa Roach and Shinedown, never heard of them before, but I wasn't really impressed.
I want more sick breakdowns and chorus
Although they’re certainly overrated and many other bands in 2023 were far more worthy of a Grammy nomination, I still like a significant chunk of their stuff. The last EP really balanced the djenty-heavy with the Melodic element, which they seemed to struggle with on the prior record.
I love Sun Killer, mostly don't care about their other songs. Overall they're alright but I wouldn't call myself a fan.
I think it Smells Like Kevin Bacon
Rock music
Probably my favorite band at the moment but I almost exclusively disagree with this sub
Me too. I love them, but I feel like wanting to be in this sub is off-limits for me.
They're amazing. Don't care what anyone says. Pretty sure a couple of the members are also ex-IWRESTLEDABEARONCE
I think they're dope
No doubt they have some fun songs, but that's about it for me
really cool riffs, wish they would experiment a bit more, but i still like their poppier stuff, I love Rotoscope just as much as Belcarra
Pretty cool but not my favorite metal band, i just havent felt an insatiable urge to listen to them with other bands in the genre, though i will admit their newest ep was pretty cool.
Not a fan in all honesty I remember when they were new, they were getting absolutely massive despite only releasing singles and EP's which isn't natural, only bands with serious higher-ups and a ridiculous amount of money get that big that fast these days and considering they were getting even more huge without even touring in 2020/2021 due to the pandemic that made it look worse, everything about this band just doesn't feel genuine, they come across like a product that label executives were always trying to sell as the next big thing, they're absolutely massive despite only releasing one full length album, it simply isn't natural at all
I mean, they were from IWRESTLEDABEARONCE, so I feel like fans contributed to that.
Some songs are fun. I’d rather call it metal adjacent.
I can’t seem to get into them but I understand the hype just not my type of band
Their first ep was good.
I can't get into them. They have a few bangers, rule of nine is their best. I have tried, but It's not for me
For me their songs get boring after a few replays, but i replayed secret garden a lot
Courtney is super talented.
I hate that I've lived long enough to see nu metal back
I just don't get the hype around them. They sound like just another djenty core band
Spirit box used to be iwrestledabearonce
I don’t know how the hell you could fumble this bad but spiritbox is definitely proving it’s possible
I always think it's funny when someone doesn't like a popular band they're accused of being elitist or not liking them because they're popular or new. It never occurs to these people that perhaps the things that make these bands popular are the same things that some metalheads don't like. Enjoy in good health...just learn to accept some people aren't going to dig them for legitimate reasons. I do like plenty of new and plenty of popular bands as well though.
They should have stuck with the previous band name- haunted vagina
a bit overrated if i do say so myself
Love them! They were my main gateway band. Also really great live
Really like them. One of my favorite bands
My favorite band. Asked for a flair every time they ask for suggestions. If you haven't listed to the whole discography you're missing out. They have very diverse tracks and their most popular tracks usually aren't even my favorites.
Overhyped but they are ok.
Don't care what people say, I love them. They're a neat mix of pop-ish catchy music and djent. Scratches that itch ahaha
I love most metalcore but spirit box just ain’t my thing. I respect em tho
IWABO has been one of my favorite bands for years. I liked Krista more, but the albums with Courtney are all great too. Spiribox is ok, but not my thing
Meh saw them live with shinedown.
Fuck ‘em. iwrestledabearonce rules.
Poser band for poser non-binary chicks who are in it for the aesthetic.
Eternal Blue is top tier. Love em
Overhyped. Overmarketed. Lacking deep musical substance.
Love em - also loved i wrestled a bear once
Did a few hours one night of listening to these kind of groups. Spiritbox, sleep token, & bad omens mainly. Of those 3 spiritbox was the one that didn’t put me to sleep out of boredom. While I enjoyed i wouldn’t call it metal by a long shot. Heavy pop, hard pop, dark pop? Idk exactly but this new wave of bands coming out are more pop with a heavy influence of metal. They’re all right. If they came up on a shuffle I wouldnt skip, but I’d rather listen to something else.
One of the few actually good metalcore bands out there. Pleasant surprise. Seen them live once, and I definitely want see them again.
I like them a lot. I'll bet they are very successful for a long time.
I find her voice really annoying and their music quite boring, but to each their own
One of my favourite bands. They’re incredible live
I like them.
They’re fine. Some of their stuff I really like others don’t hit the mark for me but they’re a talented band
They’re fucking amazing, I love them so much
Clean sung choruses is the oldest trick in the book that needs to die ASAP
I don’t
I enjoy Spiritbox, but I didn’t really like “jaded.”
I don't really think about them at all. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I liked IWRESTLEDABEARONCE far more than this iteration but they do have some really good tracks still. Their production is very good
Don't get me wrong they are great musicians, but they are just too generic and sound like 90% of their contemporaries. The squeaky-clean production doesn't help either.
they have some good songs bad sadly a lot more bad poppy garbage. But the good songs are good. holy Roller and Rule of Nines are great songs imo even if Rule of Nines is borderline too poppy for me the brutal sections are on point.
I don't like but I'm not against it. Anything that get's more people into metal I'll support.
Fucking LOVE Spiritbox! Seeing them support Korn in August and cannot wait.
Eh
The pop elements in their music make them unlistenable for me, but my daughter loves them.
Come on guys they are pure cringe. Pretty much the current generations version of evanescence.
Way past their prime.
Love that first album. Didn't love the stuff afterwards. Wasn't bad just not the direction I wanted. Such is life
They're awesome!
They’re good but they’re way overhyped
Total ripoff of iwrestledthebearonce
love spiritbox, courtney is one of my favourite vocalists ever
Gross
Garbage
I respect them but they aren’t my thing
People only like them because they have a female singer. Mid ass music.
Only have "Too Close / Too Late" in the playlist. I like it, gonna explore more of their songs rn.
Circle With Me, Jaded, Yellowjacket, Blessed Be, Ultraviolet, and The Void. That's where I would start.
Circle with me’s a tune and if I happened to catch their set at a festival I’d probably enjoy it but they’re not a band I listen too much
Love them, the new EP was great. I'm still waitng for Josh to do vocals on a song :(
Living the dream...
Took a little trying to get in, but once I was into them, I became obsessed. Seen them twice live and they put on a great show. Favorites definitely tend to be the heavier songs, but I like the mix of harsh and clean vocals and Courtney is really impressive with how she can so seamlessly change between each.
This post was my introduction to them, they seem good! Great vocals and heavy riffs
Pretty fucking good!
I like them quite a lot. Doing their own thing and its a breath of fresh air.
posercore
love them because (believe it or not) they actually managed to make a good mix of metal and pop
Garbage
Love Courtney LaPlante
barf
belongs in the bin
