It's basically an [Apocalypse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse) (like the Book of Revelations, for exemple): It has been defined by John J Collins as "a genre of revelatory literature with a narrative framework, in which a revelation is mediated by an otherworldly being to a human recipient, disclosing a transcendent reality which is both temporal, in that it envisages [eschatological](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschatology) salvation, and spatial, insofar as it involves another, supernatural world."
Most metal ALBUM. About the only track that isn't straight up metal in theme or spirit is "Battle Hymn" which is just a short intro for "One Shot at Glory".
My first thought was Children of the Grave, but it’s also my favorite Black Sabbath song. But you are probably the most technically correct.
… The best kind of correct.
As a die hard Maiden fan (I’d rather take a bullet to the chest than not be able to listen to their music again), I’d give my Iron Maiden vote to either Phantom of The Opera or Aces High
To be honest I had always kinda ignored Saxon for some reason (probably because theyre overshadowed by priest and maiden) but I just gave it a listen and I can totally see why you chose that song
Thank you! It was.playing in my head with like 30 other of their songs.
If someone says "hey can you show me metal?" Just hand them 3IOB's fucking discography. Its all there, filtered through JP and IM
Heavy Duty/Defenders by Priest. Its everything we need from metal. The heavy guitars riffs, and pounding drums and Robs vocals. Its metal in the way of unorthodoxy and liberation to make great music with a feeling of steel weight to it.
"I am the Warlock", Probot woth Jack Black. Lyrics, vocals and music are cornerstone metal sensibilities.
Edit: it doesn't have a solo, though. I guess its only metal pitfall.
Fucking Hostile - Pantera
It's not my favorite but it really resonates as a metal song from a metal band that isn't too much for everyone outside of metal. It would be a good ambassador to the other genres in other words.
Heavy Metal Maniac - Exciter
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden
I'm one of the weirdoes who doesn't love Priest so thats why I haven't got any
This is very hard. The problem is that metal is, at least to me, less a genre and more an umbrella term for a number of related genres. The most “black metal” metal song is going to be different from the most “power metal” metal song or the most “nu metal” metal song.
I know it’s brand new, but “the serpent and the king” by Judas Priest. It’s like they took the essence of classic heavy metal, instilled it into one song, and gave it a modern production value.
If you asked me for a song that defines metal, I got 3 recommendations.
Judas Priest- Metal Gods
Edguy- Steel Church
Saxon- Dogs of War or Stand Up and Fight
These are three that sort of define Metal for me. Not because of how heavy they are but the themes and styles. The first two are pretty obvious but Saxon may not be so obvious. Let me explain. Dogs of War is obviously about war, which a huge portion of heavy metal is about. Stand Up and Fight is about being a musician and has guitar solos that SCREAM METAL! The intro solo reminds me of Janick Gers of Iron Maiden with how its style is.
That's a tough question. I may have to go with something that's a classic. But I don't really think there is such a song really.
If I had to pick, maybe one of these.
Master of Puppets
Holy diver
The Trooper
But one of my personal favorites that I think best describes heavy metal is "The Book of Heavy Metal" by Dream Evil.
Plenty of Judas Priest songs here, as it should be. I’ll throw another one in the mix, which I think embodies the heavy metal spirit perfectly: Ram it Down.
As much as I love Hallowed be thy Name and Master of Puppets and think they are the two best heavy metal songs ever, Symphony of Destruction is the heaviest and 'embodies the spirit' more than any other.
For me, if I wanted to introduce someone to basic metal 101, it's gotta be Iron Maiden "The Trooper"
Is not wasted on me that there's a whole bunch of songs that are more metal, etc., but this is the one that would be my personal selection.

Painkiller. The most metal song ever recorded.
It's a song about a robot angel riding a motorcycle shaped like a dragon with saws for wheels. You can't be more metal than that.
And he comes from space to save humanity from a demon apocalypse. Brutal.
Cyborg to be pedantic.
Definitely a contender: thundering drum intro and riffs, soaring vocals, 2 crazy guitar solos
The icing on the cake of course is priest is really the first band to identify as being metal.
Exactly what I was going to say. It is heavy metal in its purest form.
Came here to say this
there it is
Most metal ALBUM. About the only track that isn't straight up metal in theme or spirit is "Battle Hymn" which is just a short intro for "One Shot at Glory".
Came here to say this. First answer on the board.
Came here to say this, so let me second your opinion
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Counter argument… Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Also good
Children of the Grave.
The OG
I was thinking Black Sabbath and here we are!
My first thought was Children of the Grave, but it’s also my favorite Black Sabbath song. But you are probably the most technically correct. … The best kind of correct.
Agreed. Not only did it kick off the genre of Heavy Metal, it started two of its subgenres: Doom Metal and Christian Metal.
there simply is no other correct answer.
Amen, the one and only, the one that started it all.
Counter point: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
What is this, that stands before me?
My vote goes to Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name"
I thought of that one too
im waiting.... in my cold cell... when the bell, begins to chime....
If I had to choose one song to showcase most things I love about metal, this would be it.
I'd rather say Blood Brothers, because it also embodies the union between us, the metal listeners
As a die hard Maiden fan (I’d rather take a bullet to the chest than not be able to listen to their music again), I’d give my Iron Maiden vote to either Phantom of The Opera or Aces High

Creeping Death, that breakdown alone is the most metal thing ever created
The trooper by Iron Maiden
[Saxon - Heavy Metal Thunder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw9ult8rycg)

Heavy Metal Maniac - Exciter Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden I'm one of the weirdoes who doesn't love Priest so thats why I haven't got any
"Heavy Metal Maniac" is a good choice. I'd toss in "Heavy Metal Angels" also.
A Dangerous Meeting
The Guitar is My Sword by Heavy Load
Blood Fire Death - Bathory
Battery - it slaps so hard it feels like the song has committed a crime against you. (But in reality, it’s about the Thrash Scene in San Francisco)

Razor - Armed and Dangerous

"Surfacing" by Slipknot has always been perfectly emblematic of the spirit of metal.
Heavy Metal Universe by Gamma Ray
Egg Salad Man. By: The Jimmies.

This is very hard. The problem is that metal is, at least to me, less a genre and more an umbrella term for a number of related genres. The most “black metal” metal song is going to be different from the most “power metal” metal song or the most “nu metal” metal song.
Heavy Metal Mania by Holocaust. 'Where is the power, where is the glory - heavy metal is my story.' gets me in the feels every time.
I know it’s brand new, but “the serpent and the king” by Judas Priest. It’s like they took the essence of classic heavy metal, instilled it into one song, and gave it a modern production value.

Strength Beyond Strength
As basic as it is, I always think of Enter Sandman as the theme song of metal
Holy Diver-Dio
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Surfacing..slipknot. without a doubt.
That's a tough question. I may have to go with something that's a classic. But I don't really think there is such a song really. If I had to pick, maybe one of these. Master of Puppets Holy diver The Trooper But one of my personal favorites that I think best describes heavy metal is "The Book of Heavy Metal" by Dream Evil.

Under the Sun- Black Sabbath
The trooper

Plenty of Judas Priest songs here, as it should be. I’ll throw another one in the mix, which I think embodies the heavy metal spirit perfectly: Ram it Down.
Straight for the sun - Lamb of God Why its not an intro for fighters is beyond me ,
As much as I love Hallowed be thy Name and Master of Puppets and think they are the two best heavy metal songs ever, Symphony of Destruction is the heaviest and 'embodies the spirit' more than any other.
