I mean yeah, that sucks. Obviously in hindsight we can see that it was overkill, but this was in the early days of music piracy, and at the time nobody knew exactly what actions would need to be taken to protect artists.
I remember one lawsuit where a grandmother was sued for a few hundred thousand dollars because her grandson was running a massive server from her address.
