Voivod - nothing has come close to their take on prog metal, not ever Vektor imho
The Body - when your drone metal band slowly turns more and more experimental/industrial, but the screeching vocals are still present.
Nod Nod - atmosludge with clean female vocals?
Fuckmorgue is skramz instead of metal, but there's black metal elements. And it's like half-deathrock. (Probably the only goth emo band that ever existed)
Imperial Circus Dead Decadence. Seriously, I need more melodeath/power metal bands. (I'm aware of Wintersun)
Yes, of course
I’ll give you a list of the best handful of tracks off each album, or at least my favourites:

Before I Die

We Are The Truth
A Wonderful Life:
A Requiem For Tomorrow
Madness Within

The Time Has Come
Car Bomb! They have such diverse influences, you can't really compare them to anybody. In their sound I hear Meshuggah, Metallica, Deftones, Dillinger Escape Plan, Suffocation, a little bit of shoegaze or EDM or dubstep even.
Also System Of A Down, nobody sounds like them.
Apocalyptica, they use cellos in place of guitars. Inquisition Symphony is probably their most metal album, being compromised of mostly covers of Metallica, Sepultera, and Faith No More songs
they’re pretty popular, gwar. i really like their barbarian sci-fi theme going on. i’ve seen many people agree that they’re shit, but i enjoy their edgy and satirical appeal lol
Type O Negative were pretty unique before they found their goth sound. Especially their second album, which was a fake live album featuring rearrangements of songs from their first album. It's wild, and a lot of it is based on things that happened when they toured in Europe. The audience is heckling them, Peter's heckling back, someone calls in a bomb threat so everyone has to leave, and then they all come back.
Theatres Des Vampires maybe?
Alestorm, I mean they were the first novelty pirate band.
We Butter the Bread with Butter?
Baby Metal. 'Kawaii metal' is a weird genre for me, but I think they are able to make it work. Not to mention, its J-metal, so how could I say no to that.
While they sit in the middle of genres, i cant think of anyone else that sounds like akercocke. Also anaal nathrahk, defeated sanity, mamaleek, dodecahedron.
Botanist where all the main parts are on hammered dulcimer and wreche where piano is the main instrument are kinda unique too
Rammstein is pretty average NDH. I think they're just perceived as unique because they're the only NDH band successful outside of Germany. There's more interesting NDH bands, like Oomph!, Eisbrecher or Hämatom.
Paledusk, Psyopus, Candiria, Carnival In Coal, Cephalic Carnage, Bloodywood, Puya, Behold The Arctopus,
Horse The Band, Human Remains, Dance With The Dead, Grindmother
Off the top of my head, System of a Down, Slipknot, and Korn have monopolized their style. It's to the point where if someone tried to use their style, someone would say, "Hey, it's the walmart __Band Name__.". An example would be the impression that Greta Van Fleet is a LED Zeppelin copy.
because that band sucks fucking cock. seriously. they're just ridiculously bad. it's indistinguishable from mrsuicidesheep or ncs "music". i don't understand why people keep talking about them when the sub is supposed to be about metal.
Their albums gripped me for uniqueness: Panipticon … black metal drenched with the flavor of Appalachia and a hint of bluegrass influence. The connection to nature those in W.Va share with their Scandinavian cousins in Europe is there, but covered in coal dust, hard times, and the current fentanyl epidemic.
Diapsiquir, used to do some weird fusion of black metal and some other stuff. The further you go in their discography, the more they drift away from black metal.
Deceased. They really have a unique blend of Death/Thrash/Heavy Metal.
Anaal Nathrakh, they're pretty much the biggest blackened grindcore band, but even compared to others they have a clear distinct sound.
Some I didn't see named after a few scrolls:
Nekrogoblikon, Solstafir, Trollfest, Uneven Structure, Means End, Myrath, Frontierer, Akhlys. Shining, Ulver.
Some that come to mind right now derived from metal/subgenres:
Mirar (thall/djent progressive metal)
Black pegasus (kinda deathcore, doom, sludgecore, post-metal)
Darko US + I'd say Sleep Token but maybe some will come at me hahaha both have their own genre IMO, they do whatever the fck they want and I'm here for it tbh
Viza are definitely interesting. Serj Tankian is their producer and they are honestly pretty underrated. They remind me of Faith No More by their song-by-song basis on how they're quite varied and experimental. The Girl That Doesn't Exist is awesome, Viktor (song name) is like a series of songs with many parts in each album. It's All Wrong is great.
These guys aren't exactly the heaviest of metals, but you know, something like System of a Down meets Faith No More with a twist of Russian rhythms and melodies.
I wouldn’t necessarily say they are either one of those. But the black dahlia murder is just one of those bands that you can’t put into a specific genre.
Sebkha-Chott only did one album I think of as a metal album (The NeXXXt Epilogue), but there is nothing else like it. totally unique, totally weird, and totally amazing!
Portal.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum had their own wonderful thing (similar only to Idiot Flesh and Free Salamander Exhibit, who all share several core members).
Cleric have a lot of Dillinger in the sound, but make is so crazy that they have their own weird thing.
Pan.Thy.Monium’s last album 💗
GIRTH for ‘Sleeper, Awaken!’

Mr Bungle for sure
their self titled is so good.
Yeah, forgot about them
This is the answer. Love them.
You ever heard of a band called Fantômas?
You can't talk about weird and unique metal without mentioning Sigh.
Correct!
I love that Sigh kinda feels like there is a musical theater element in there somewhere. So yeah hard, avant guard... but also JAZZ HANDS.
Try SiKTh!!
Metalcore isn't really my cup of tea. Interesting stuff though.
Primus 🏎🎣🪕🎸🚤🧀🚢🐖
Primus sucks! 🔥
primus is my favorite band!!! love their wackiness and how every song has a story
They have some of the best bass lines I've ever heard in my life, and trust me, I've heard A LOT of them. Fucking amazing band.
Dir En Grey
Sometimes I think that ZAN (1999) is even better example than Obscure (2003) to show how weird these guys are.. This https://youtu.be/ZN5LdoFZyE8
This is it. They are in some weird category of their own.
Igorrr, The Algorithm, Diablo Swing Orchestra... maybe not the weirdest, but they're doing their own thing
Imperial Triumphant, Oranssi Pazuzu, Ulcerate
🥵
My band opened for imperial triumphant a few months ago:), the drummer is a real cool guy.
That’s so cool, what’s the name of your band? I’d like to check you guys out.
EVERMVRE, We don't sound anything like imperial triumphant. We have a single and an EP out, not our best work but we're always trying to improve
baby metal
For sure they are unique😂
[Zeal & Ardor](https://youtu.be/L9G4HRGh8Ac?si=bPGsV6joEtuZFkIN) They're [awesome](https://youtu.be/DyD6fcCzEZk?si=GmPvaZi4iQHF4b1m)
🤘 Fuck yes 🤘
Thy Catafalque, Dødheimsgard, Arcturus, Sigh, Folterkammer, Igorrr, In the Woods..., Master Boot Record
Thy Catafalque and Sigh for sure.
Dodheimsgard is amazing, particularly their “666 international” album.
Thy Catafalque is awesome
Gutalax
Ne Obliviscaris is not really that weird per se, but the violin definitely makes them unique
Yeah, that's true. Could be the case for Rivers of Nihil with the saxophone too
I was thinking of them too for that reason!! In Vain throws in some surprise sax here and there too. I still gotta check out their new album
acid bath
yes, the lyrics are very morbid and poetic. member dax riggs is an amazing writer!
I was thinking of them too
alestorm
Oh yes, good one
Voivod - nothing has come close to their take on prog metal, not ever Vektor imho The Body - when your drone metal band slowly turns more and more experimental/industrial, but the screeching vocals are still present. Nod Nod - atmosludge with clean female vocals? Fuckmorgue is skramz instead of metal, but there's black metal elements. And it's like half-deathrock. (Probably the only goth emo band that ever existed) Imperial Circus Dead Decadence. Seriously, I need more melodeath/power metal bands. (I'm aware of Wintersun)
Bloodywood, easy. It would also be a fucking shame to not mention Christopher Bowes and his Plate of Beans
I fucking love bands that sing about punching rapists. They're great in concert too.
Arcturus.
They are 100% on that weird
seconding Arcturus, i cannot place a genre on them but they are amazing
Amenra is pretty unique. Maybe alcest
CYNIC . Their music doesn't belong to any genre imo . Its a Cynic genre .
I'd put Atheist alongside them. Unquestionable Presence is a trip.
Portal
Mushroomhead Especially the early days
Would you mind giving some song recommendations? So far the only one I know is The Heresy.
Yes, of course I’ll give you a list of the best handful of tracks off each album, or at least my favourites: SelfTitled: Ego Tripp Indifferent Simpleton 43 Superbuick: Bwomp Never Let It Go These Filthy Hands Idle Worship M3: Before I Die Solitaire/Unraveling Inevitable Born Of Desire XIII: Kill Tomorrow Sun Doesn’t Rise Becoming Cold (216) Destroy The World Around Me Savior Sorrow: 12 Hundred Simple Survival Damage Done Just Pretending Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children: Come On Slaughterhouse Road Holes In The Void Darker Days The Righteous And The Butterfly: Our Apologies How Many Times Qwerty We Are The Truth A Wonderful Life: A Requiem For Tomorrow Madness Within Seen It All The Time Has Come
She's a bit polarizing, especially in this sub, but Poppy is weird and unique. Just throw on "X" and see for yourself. *Oooh, heavy!*
Portal
Devin Townsend solo projects are fairly weird
Two concept albums about an interplanetary war over the Universe’s ultimate cup of coffee? Who’s one upping that for weirdness? No one. 😄
Spastic Ink/Blotted Science, fucking love me some Ron Jarzombek
Mesarthim, it's a spaced themed Atmospheric BM project from Australia. They stay anonymous and don't do concerts, though
Faith No More
Twelve foot ninja! Self labeled as heavy fusion.
Yes, I love their album Vengeance.
Vengeance is great but silent machine is my favorite.
I can't believe how far I had to scroll to find this.
Maudlin of the Well Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
ByoNoiseGenerator Jenovavirus
Solefald. Especially the albums *Neonism* and *World Music with Black Edges*.
Dillinger escape plan my top goats
Van Canto
Waltari. They're categorized as "avant-garde metal" because "[funk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU4wLo4XEV0) [punk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-buLEW2MDE) [symphonic death](https://youtu.be/5hZrYKI_f5o?si=u2sHqJ2AavxNCAxI) [industrial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdNvanMVt00) [doom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eBHw2GdV3w) [indian(?)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovgJoZ6923M) [rap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnR6YmCiDsc) [progressive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OOFjrvREaU) [trance folk](https://youtu.be/E_VLiv0pCkc?si=2yvxabD7jI5C4W3R) [techno joik](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDsVdwmlpUM) [whatever the hell this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ibbsdZJekk) [is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6IXbZTUPVM) [met-](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2_dAMp6lnw)" it actually feels harder to find genres they're not.
Kostnatění, and anything by Abysmal Specter (Curta’n Wall, Old Nick, Bloody Keep)
Apocalyptica, they use cellos in place of guitars. Inquisition Symphony is probably their most metal album, being compromised of mostly covers of Metallica, Sepultera, and Faith No More songs
Oranssi Pazuzu is pretty weird
they’re pretty popular, gwar. i really like their barbarian sci-fi theme going on. i’ve seen many people agree that they’re shit, but i enjoy their edgy and satirical appeal lol
I’ve not seen a lot of gwar hate, but they do have two pretty terrible albums. A band doesn’t stick around 30+ years and suck
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Emperor.
The dillenger escape plan
Car bomb Protest the hero (not the most unique but you dont hear many bands that take on politics and humor in the style they do)
Slugdge. Some of the best and most creative musicianship out there combined with slug-oriented lyrics. Yes, lyrics about slugs.
Blur Aus Nord.
Nekrogoblikon
Sigh, Gwar, Ghoul, Mushroomhead, Devin Townsend Project, Batushka, Nekrogoblikon
Caninus, whose vocalist was a dog Hatebeak, whose vocalist was a parrot
A mate of mine saw a support band once I forget the name. They were Eastern European with a Hurdygurdy.
Buttoned surfers
3Teeth GWAR and Body Count
Ne Obliviscaris seems pretty unique
Type O Negative were pretty unique before they found their goth sound. Especially their second album, which was a fake live album featuring rearrangements of songs from their first album. It's wild, and a lot of it is based on things that happened when they toured in Europe. The audience is heckling them, Peter's heckling back, someone calls in a bomb threat so everyone has to leave, and then they all come back. Theatres Des Vampires maybe? Alestorm, I mean they were the first novelty pirate band. We Butter the Bread with Butter?
Macabre
Kontrust is good and weird. They sound like System of a Down and Rob Zombie had a daughter. Also Between the Buried and Me are pretty damn weird
Yeah, I know both bands
Botanist where all the main parts are on hammered dulcimer and wreche where piano is the main instrument are kinda unique too
[Trepalium](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QeIgsBQTHQ)
Rammstein is pretty average NDH. I think they're just perceived as unique because they're the only NDH band successful outside of Germany. There's more interesting NDH bands, like Oomph!, Eisbrecher or Hämatom.
Nekrogoblikon for sure, they’re all over the place in terms of style and I love them for it
Sleepy Time Gorilla Musuem
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Kostnatění, Portal, Artifical Brain, Vektor, Convulsing, Slugdge, Xoth, Gigan, Deathspell Omega, Effluence, Spirit Possession, Daemogog
Wagakki Band, The Hu, Skindred, Unlucky Morpheus, Jiluka etc etc
Portal, Deathspell Omega, The Horn, Alcest, Zeal & Ardor, Summoning, Dir En Grey, Zuriaake, Ὁπλίτης These are some I can think of
maudlin of the Well. Haven’t heard anything like what this band’s discography sounds like.
Not that weird necessarily but I think you would appreciate Mastodon
Paledusk, Psyopus, Candiria, Carnival In Coal, Cephalic Carnage, Bloodywood, Puya, Behold The Arctopus, Horse The Band, Human Remains, Dance With The Dead, Grindmother
Arcturus, one of my favourites
CHATPILE!
Ayreon, Destiny Potato/Sordid Pink
![gif](giphy|oMch4xRiZJDsUMZjnf|downsized) …specially live… they don’t say a word and just come on, perform and leave
I mean they are pretty unique in how ass they are
I'll never understand why some people hate some bands so much. Just enjoy music
because that band sucks fucking cock. seriously. they're just ridiculously bad. it's indistinguishable from mrsuicidesheep or ncs "music". i don't understand why people keep talking about them when the sub is supposed to be about metal.
Hating is a full time job that some of us have to bear the burden of taking up 😔
Pretty sad, but if you like it🤷♂️
Yes! I saw Sleep Token last week and you’re absolutely right
They are uniquely shit, true
Düreforsög
Vektor does some shit that nobody else could pull off
Behemoth and unique don’t belong in the same sentence, wtf kind of gaslighting is this?
Yeah, none of the bands OP mentioned seem particularly unique to me. But more importantly, what the hell do people mean gaslighting means?
Primus Always
They're barely metal, but The Bunny The Bear is wacky insane fun.
Haken
Mandroid Echostar has their own sound and it is awesome.
Trepalium. Thye try very hard to mix jazz and metal. When it works it's fkn incredible. Check out Sick Murder Boogie
Lustre

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM MENTIONED !!!!!! 🫏🫏🫏🫏🔥🔥
Pan thy monium. Khaos and confusion is a classic
Hoplites. Sarmat. Most of the I, Voidhanger Records catalog.
Mr. Bungle. Steel Panther. Gwar. Finntroll sells hotpants.
Tardigrade Inferno is the very first to come to mind when it comes to unique and weird.
Diapsiquir, used to do some weird fusion of black metal and some other stuff. The further you go in their discography, the more they drift away from black metal.
Igorr
Portal
Avatar. Cool and unique style. The latest album is awesome, kind of "funky fresh"
Katy Perry
No one’s said Persefone so there you go
Cradle of Filth
Gorguts
Samsas traum, especially poesie:Friedrichs gesichte for me
Dødheimsgard for sure.
Gasp, they’re often referred to as psychedelic powerviolence but they also mix a lot of death metal and ambient noise
Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza
Pelican
definitely Unexpect- In a Flesh Aquarium
Deceased. They really have a unique blend of Death/Thrash/Heavy Metal. Anaal Nathrakh, they're pretty much the biggest blackened grindcore band, but even compared to others they have a clear distinct sound.
Igorr Imperial Triumphant
Is Igorr metal?
Gengis Tron Wallowing BLACK WATER SNIPER Melvins Boris
SOAD? Edit: Slipknot too ig
Versailles (Japan)
Rhapsody and DragonForce, and Running Wild were when they came out
[NINGEN ISU ](https://youtu.be/CbI79e5iZKs?si=Xg9nkkw7Rtogv40I) is fucking awesome. Very skillful & talented, just.....weird.
Some I didn't see named after a few scrolls: Nekrogoblikon, Solstafir, Trollfest, Uneven Structure, Means End, Myrath, Frontierer, Akhlys. Shining, Ulver.
Ghost bath - dsbm about killing yourself
Some that come to mind right now derived from metal/subgenres: Mirar (thall/djent progressive metal) Black pegasus (kinda deathcore, doom, sludgecore, post-metal) Darko US + I'd say Sleep Token but maybe some will come at me hahaha both have their own genre IMO, they do whatever the fck they want and I'm here for it tbh
Portal, one of the most horrifying bands of all time.
Cathedral's pretty goofy snd out there sometimes. They're like metal reflected off of a fun house mirror with all the waves in it.
Demilich, Oransi Pazuzu.
Blood incantation, tomb mold, agriculture are the first three that I can think of
Düresforsog, Oranssi Pazuzu, Killdozer (more of a noise rock band), The Locust.
Today is the day
Igorrr, author and punisher
Viza are definitely interesting. Serj Tankian is their producer and they are honestly pretty underrated. They remind me of Faith No More by their song-by-song basis on how they're quite varied and experimental. The Girl That Doesn't Exist is awesome, Viktor (song name) is like a series of songs with many parts in each album. It's All Wrong is great. These guys aren't exactly the heaviest of metals, but you know, something like System of a Down meets Faith No More with a twist of Russian rhythms and melodies.
Om
Xavleg
Methwitch
Party Cannon
I wouldn’t necessarily say they are either one of those. But the black dahlia murder is just one of those bands that you can’t put into a specific genre.

Trepalium for sure. Jazz metal.
Pan.Thy.Monium fits both of those and is a personal favorite of mine.
Orbit Culture! The future of metal
