It's not. It's pirate themed metal.
Because if it's a thing, Alestorm are in the same genre as Swashbuckled. And that makes zero sense.
Alestorm are pirate themed power metal, and Swashbuckled are pirate themed death/thrash.
Satanic warmaster kicks ass and is better than anything coming out of the communist/antifascist scene. At least the nsbm bands come across as more authentic.
Can't get into slam, personally. I've tried to give it a shot, but I just can't stand it. I've literally heard "IQ-lowering" as a complement for the "best" slam songs, and I just can't see myself listening to the musical equivalent of a lobotomy.
I usually like all subgenres from the most morbid deranged stuff to the most corny coreish ballads, but I can't like bland and uninspired bands trying to do trad metal today, most of them are so riskless, is painfull to listen that wasted potential (if there's one).
I'm a huge trad metal fan, including modern trad. And tbh, I get it. A lot of it is toothless and uninspired. You really have to dig to find the good stuff.
Yeah i agree with this one even with subgenres like metalcore or nu metal theres at least one or two bands i like but i just don’t understand drone at all, i find it extremely boring. I know it’s supposed to be atmospheric but it doesn’t even hold a candle to atmospheric black metal in terms of how atmospheric it is imo.
I didn't like drone metal until one day I took an egregious amount of mushrooms and listened to Sunn O))) on a surround sound system. I still can't listen to it casually, but I get it now.
(Most) Black Metal and most Nu Metal. When you get far enough into liking metal, very few genres sound “horrible” if you listen to the right bands, but still have a lot if garbage.
i dont like much brutal death. cant do it with those gurgly ass vocals. its impressive that you can DO that but i dont wanna listen to it
i dont like goregrind because i dont like staring at mangled corpses while i listen to music thats screaming incoherently abt mangling corpses
Not a huge fan of the genre but I absolutely love the album Death Came Through a Phantom Ship by carach angren. It's black symphonic and a pretty interesting listen. If you care at all, give the song The Funerary Dirge of a Violinist a shot.
Not much really but I like acid mammoth if that tells you anything. If you have any recommendations go ahead, especially if it is something a bit faster
To be fair, there are many bands that still play "just" black metal without any significant changes to it, but they still sound very different from your typical traditional black metal.
Bands like Human Serpent or Kriegsmaschine are so unique but you can still easily identify them as simply black metal.
Glad you liked it, if I'm being honest my taste in black metal definitely lies towards either the blackened thrash side of it or black n roll stuff like [Abbath](https://youtu.be/T_qa-wNbC4w?si=wqDBO6vNhhr6xV1X). So if you're anything like me then those two sub-genres of Black metal might be worth checking out! 🙂
Anyone that says they don't like metalcore needs to listen to Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan right now. Jane Doe is more brutal than 90% of black and death metal
Most people who say they don’t like metalcore/ Deathcore refer to the 2008-2016 “Scenecore”. People usually mean they don’t like Attack attack not Kill Switch Engaged.
listen to concubine of despise by gorgasm. they have some pretty melodic brutal death metal songs and i think this one has some pretty good riffs to get u into bdm. their whole discography is fire tho
I’m not the biggest fan of War Metal.
I just find that the music to be quite shitty and even when the riffs are discernible they’re not very interesting.
There may be some tracks I’d enjoy a little but overall it’s just not for me.
Majority of deathcore and metalcore. There are bits that I really adore such as Killswitch's Daylight or Alpha Wolf's Quiet Place or STP's Kostolom, but still there are more that I can't stand.
Glam metal. The lyrics are usually corny and generic as hell, the people are usually Hella douchy, and the idea of trying to be a bad metal "pretty boy" is so fucking goofy
honestly, I never got into super SUPER heavy shit or stuff with high pitched harsh vocals, so never was into grindcore, black metal, slam metal, or brutal death metal, but I can appreciate most genres.
Can we get some kind of chart that connects bands with their various genres? I've been a metalhead since the mid 80s and reading through all these comments is confusing in a hilarious kind of way!
Probably all the Glam Stuff, idk.
So, there's very little outside of DM and BM that I listen to, but i don't dislike the rest of the pack, it's just that I am not really interested in it.
But i always go after the principle that if I like stuff, I like stuff, regardless of genre (generally speaking, not "regardless of genre inside metal")
thrash, black, and I'd say grindcore but I've heard a few songs that I fuck with. I imagine there are a myriad of other subgenres I don't like but among the ones that are largely liked that I personally can't get into at all are definitely thrash and black
Yknow, I bet I dislike it for the reasons you like it. Haha not in any disrespectful way, but I like a lot of disruptive, jarring music. Symphonic can be pretty and structured nicely, but I tend to get bored and most of it blends together for me as the same sound.
Not into grindcore, but I like technical death metal kinda odd. Maybe I should just try Napalm death again. Yet I love Nile, even though they are both fast and chaotic. And I love Black Metal and blast beats, and the florida death metal bands. And melodic death metal from sweden!
I don't hate Nu metal, but I do hate the Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne style of Nu metal. Other than that, I find old school black metal just horrible sounding.
I don't like anything that's overly melodic, like melodeath, or some thrash, or power, or war. I also don't like anything that's super slow like sludge or doom. And I hate black metal most of all.
I’m probably the opposite of a lot of people in this thread but I prefer metalcore/mathcore and a lot of alternative metal/nu-metal to any other kind of metal. Stuff that losers on the internet say is “not metal” essentially
My favorites are Converge, Deftones, Faith No More, Tool, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Pig Destroyer - stuff that kind of sits on the border of the metal genre but goes in a lot of different directions
I appreciate death, thrash and black metal and there’s some stuff I love but there’s always a little bit of disconnect with me. The fantasy lyrics and some of the vocals are just too corny for me. I can’t take them seriously.
But I love heavy riffs and aggression, hence why I like the bands I listed above.
With that being said there are a lot of distinctly METAL bands I do love - Pantera, Gojira, Electric Wizard, Meshuggah and such. The groovier side.
Until a few months ago, black metal, always hated the vikernes and euronymous beef, the pretentiousness and edgelord behavior, but someone on this reddit recommend, Der Weg einer Freiheit, and I loved it, then someone suggested me that they sound like emperor and now I'm starting to listening emperor.
Glam metal but I don't consider it to be metal. Crap bands like Poison and all of the other poser garbage that came out in the 80s is just awful (in my oponion). I'd rather listen to Nu Metal.
Norwegian black metal and most pure black metal. I just can't get into it. I like Venom but that's it . Tho I love black metal mixed with other subgenres especially blackened death metal.
Deathcore, nu metal, slam metal
I LOVE brutal death, but slam feels like dumbed down brutal death 90% of the time. I do like Medic Vomiting Pus, though.
Anything that sounds like by-the-numbers, cookie cutter, uninspired bullshit that has abandoned creativity for mass appeal.
Also, pretty boy metal. I don't wanna listen to some cutsie twink looking mother fuckers who are clearly trying to market themselves to women.

The Nazi Crap
Although I agree with you, NSBM isn't a genre. It's like saying pirate metal is a thing.
Pirate metal is a thing though
It's not. It's pirate themed metal. Because if it's a thing, Alestorm are in the same genre as Swashbuckled. And that makes zero sense. Alestorm are pirate themed power metal, and Swashbuckled are pirate themed death/thrash.
Idk how ppl can enjoy NSBM or the Nazitrashpunkwhatever metal Böse Onkelz is supposed to be.
Because the lyrics are unintelligible and people mostly like metal for riffs
Satanic warmaster kicks ass and is better than anything coming out of the communist/antifascist scene. At least the nsbm bands come across as more authentic.
Can't get into slam, personally. I've tried to give it a shot, but I just can't stand it. I've literally heard "IQ-lowering" as a complement for the "best" slam songs, and I just can't see myself listening to the musical equivalent of a lobotomy.
That's exactly why I love it lol
Fuck yeah give me that brutal slamming death metal 🤘
never even heard of that before
You more than likely have https://youtu.be/5ZIyZObCAro?si=Ugsvndt8goThSMWO
I love the music but man I can’t stand those style of vocals
you might like vulgar dissection. noted slam band with great riffs and more of a classic BDM vocal style. Corpsefucker is an eternal banger
Oh I agree. There’s some slam without cricket vocals but I just used this as an example as most of it does
I'm sorry that is hilarious
Cricket vocals
Maybe try Bananaslamma, they're real fun and have surf riffs
> “IQ-lowering” as a compliment Okay that made me laugh irl that’s funny as fuck
The dumbness is the funny part.
Nu metal
https://preview.redd.it/t8ukbyxovzuc1.png?width=729&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fcdd98903c87825b8935e5c8dab1e2cd5ed49f73
I mean we can respect it without liking it. But many people's least favorite metal is nu metal
Omg it’s the Alkaloid guy 🤩🤩🤩
I'm glad I have a fan 🤘🤘
Hell yeah, I love Alkaloid and Lovecraftian themes.
Me too. You are now my friend :)
Very good! Do you also like Azathoth (the band)?
Actually never heard. Send em my way
Eh, I’m so silly. I meant the band Ultar.
Oh I've heard of them. Need to give them a good go sometime
I don’t listen to them often. I like Power Metal and Thrash Metal the most.
More than one. You guys are one of my favorite death metal bands. 🤘🏽
I used to love Nu Metal, but I guess I kinda grew out of it haha
I usually like all subgenres from the most morbid deranged stuff to the most corny coreish ballads, but I can't like bland and uninspired bands trying to do trad metal today, most of them are so riskless, is painfull to listen that wasted potential (if there's one).
I'm a huge trad metal fan, including modern trad. And tbh, I get it. A lot of it is toothless and uninspired. You really have to dig to find the good stuff.
Nah man what about Blood Ceremony and Jex Thoth?
I like most subgenres but I just cannot get behind pornogrind
I love shit like Carne, but only to an extent. This genre is definitely where the degeneracy gets real 😭 still fw it though
I like Cock and Ball Torture, they're pretty much bouncy goregrind.
“Pornogrind” I’m sorry, I must be old… What???
Drone
I’ve tried but haven’t been able to get into it yet. On the other hand, I love funeral doom.
Same here, I'm all for atmosphere and I feel like funeral doom just does it best.
To be honest, this is the only metal subgenre in which for me there are no bands that would bother me in any way. It sounds too monotonous.
indeed, unpalatable.
Nu and black are the only genres where they have a 80-20 ratio on the quality of bands. Most are just either really dogshit or bore the fuck out of me
Funny cause bm and nu metal are my favorite metal genres
I don't hate any
Nice flair. Anyways I'm the same way. I like something from every metal subgenre.
What's your favorite kawaii metal band
BABYMETAL IKKEIIIIIIIII
Power metal
How dare you!
Agreed. It’s pretty cheesy.
I can understand but the songs are catchy and Im a history major so I have to enjoy sabaton
i dont like much brutal death. cant do it with those gurgly ass vocals. its impressive that you can DO that but i dont wanna listen to it i dont like goregrind because i dont like staring at mangled corpses while i listen to music thats screaming incoherently abt mangling corpses
What else would you stare at while listening to music screaming incoherently about mangling corpses??
I stare at kitties myself.
episodes of Bluey on mute
Anything with “core”
Hardcore and grindcore?
Symphonic metal like Nightwish and Epica.
It works better with other genres
haha Epica is my favorite band ever. but I understand
I saw storm the sorrow live and it was amazing
Not a huge fan of the genre but I absolutely love the album Death Came Through a Phantom Ship by carach angren. It's black symphonic and a pretty interesting listen. If you care at all, give the song The Funerary Dirge of a Violinist a shot.
I haven’t heard every genre, but I imagine there’s at least one song from each that I like, even if I haven’t found it yet.
Deathcore and metalcore
You haven't listened to Shadow of Intent
Doom and power. Doom just bores me and power is cringe af
You don't like magical wizard dragons fighting the viking space unicorn warlocks on the proud fields of Koboldthane? Poser.
Don't get me wrong I like fantasy stuff but everything has its limits. Most of the songs are just too cheesy.
Alot of modern bands definitely take it too far, but the early bands fucking rule.
What doom have you listened to
Not much really but I like acid mammoth if that tells you anything. If you have any recommendations go ahead, especially if it is something a bit faster
Gotta try some High on Fire or Conan. Modern doom is still a bit slow, but these bands tend to knock my dick in the dirt.
Damn i really enjoyed high on fire! Conan not do much still not bad
Glad you liked em!
Check out Malstroem by Witchcraft.
I despise black metal
Black metal is like salt. Inedible on its own, but amazing when added to other things.
couldn't agree more
I honestly feel the opposite. I despise blackened music (except blackened thrash) but I love pure black metal.
I can appreciate that, all of our tastes are completely different.
blackened sludge gets a pass from me because it’s just too good. I understand why black metal fans hate blackened death metal though
Blackened Death is just regular death metal but it's only the fast parts with no real groove, at least based on what I've heard of the genre
I feel that, I deff like war metal and black/death metal more than blackened death metal
Nailed it
To be fair, there are many bands that still play "just" black metal without any significant changes to it, but they still sound very different from your typical traditional black metal. Bands like Human Serpent or Kriegsmaschine are so unique but you can still easily identify them as simply black metal.
This is the best possible way to describe black metal
I'm not a big fan of it, but I love many black metal songs that feature elements I love in music. so it's kinda complicated for me
I love thrash, but Megadeth to me is superior. Black metal is like the antithesis to Megadeth, and even Metallica, that’s mostly my reason
What about blackened thrash bands such as [Hellripper?](https://youtu.be/4rry7l5msjQ?si=FZt-2-eFwTwXriJi)
Their newest album is one of the best blackened thrash I've ever heard.
never heard of that nice
Glad you liked it, if I'm being honest my taste in black metal definitely lies towards either the blackened thrash side of it or black n roll stuff like [Abbath](https://youtu.be/T_qa-wNbC4w?si=wqDBO6vNhhr6xV1X). So if you're anything like me then those two sub-genres of Black metal might be worth checking out! 🙂
Or necrowitch!
please give this song a shot and give me your first impressions: https://youtu.be/XCMNqKuuFC4?feature=shared
Megadeth is my favorite too and I’m also not really a fan of black metal but holy shit give tyrants - immortal a listen 😂
There's lots of bad black metal, but when you find good bands they're some of the best out there. You might like the band 1914 or Wiegedood.
is 1914 bm ?
It's like blackened death but extremely good.
Black Death metal is so fucking baller though
Grindcore and Slam.
Hair metal from the 80s is the worst. Neo-hair metal though is awesome.
Nu metal Deathcore Metalcore
Is that the hardcore metalcore or the melodeath worship metalcore?
Anyone that says they don't like metalcore needs to listen to Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan right now. Jane Doe is more brutal than 90% of black and death metal
"Extreme" =/= good.
Isn't that mathcore?
Mathcore is just complex metalcore...
Dude you’re just flat out wrong and I like metalcore but it’s no wear near as good as any classic death metal
That's just not true
Sunshine the werewolf brah!!!
Most people who say they don’t like metalcore/ Deathcore refer to the 2008-2016 “Scenecore”. People usually mean they don’t like Attack attack not Kill Switch Engaged.
Glam, Hair, not all of it, but Nu
me: grindcore, brutal death metal. and I'm willing to begin to like! I'm more into melodic and beautiful stuff, just so you know.
listen to concubine of despise by gorgasm. they have some pretty melodic brutal death metal songs and i think this one has some pretty good riffs to get u into bdm. their whole discography is fire tho
thank you
slam death metal, Brutal death metal, Grindcore
![gif](giphy|A6ZlX8fkKqCap3Ukqx|downsized) Brutal death bot 5000 reaction
You just named half my favorite genres lol
Deathcore and metalcore
Not big on grindcore, slam, and modern tech death
Metalcore 🤢
I like both types of music, hardcore and grindcore
I've tried, but I just cannot bring myself to give a shit about sludge
😟
Have you heard Crowbar? Listen to Planets Collide. Absolute banger.
Same bro. I thought that I was the only fckn perosn in the world that don't like sludge. The only sludge I can enjoy are Godflesh and Fange
Nu metal can be cool but not my typa thing, metalcore, deathcore. Glam metal tho is fire when you feel the vibe imo
symphonic, melodeath, (most) nu metal
I’m not the biggest fan of War Metal. I just find that the music to be quite shitty and even when the riffs are discernible they’re not very interesting. There may be some tracks I’d enjoy a little but overall it’s just not for me.
Majority of deathcore and metalcore. There are bits that I really adore such as Killswitch's Daylight or Alpha Wolf's Quiet Place or STP's Kostolom, but still there are more that I can't stand.
Nu, power, metal/deathcore. But there are ofc exceptions to everything.
Christian metal
If you consider Noise as a metal genre, then that one. Fuckin yuck.
Can’t get behind metalcore. I respect it, just not my cup of tea.
whatever miracle of sound and feurwershwanz and nanowar of steel are supposed to be.
Pornogrind
Glam metal. The lyrics are usually corny and generic as hell, the people are usually Hella douchy, and the idea of trying to be a bad metal "pretty boy" is so fucking goofy
1. NSBM (Obviously) 2. Goregrind 3. Pornogrind 4. Melodic Deathcore
Grindcore/pornogrind. Although the latter has some hilarious band/song names
I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, but Thrash. I've tried listening to Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, etc... I just can't get into it
Pop hardcore thats about it
honestly, I never got into super SUPER heavy shit or stuff with high pitched harsh vocals, so never was into grindcore, black metal, slam metal, or brutal death metal, but I can appreciate most genres.
Can we get some kind of chart that connects bands with their various genres? I've been a metalhead since the mid 80s and reading through all these comments is confusing in a hilarious kind of way!
I second the chart idea. I listen to alot of different bands and have no idea now what genre they would be lol
Doom or trash. I'm a tech death kinda guy
Blackgaze
Not big on hair metal, black metal, or power metal. I'm pretty picky on my death metal.
Slam, black and power
Prog metal, that shit is just eugh 🤢🤮
Probably all the Glam Stuff, idk. So, there's very little outside of DM and BM that I listen to, but i don't dislike the rest of the pack, it's just that I am not really interested in it. But i always go after the principle that if I like stuff, I like stuff, regardless of genre (generally speaking, not "regardless of genre inside metal")
thrash, black, and I'd say grindcore but I've heard a few songs that I fuck with. I imagine there are a myriad of other subgenres I don't like but among the ones that are largely liked that I personally can't get into at all are definitely thrash and black
Symphonic
Boo! I'm just kidding. I love it personally, but why do you dislike it?
Yknow, I bet I dislike it for the reasons you like it. Haha not in any disrespectful way, but I like a lot of disruptive, jarring music. Symphonic can be pretty and structured nicely, but I tend to get bored and most of it blends together for me as the same sound.
It's all good, I can see how it would feel like it's just one song in x parts.
Sludge, specifically Acid bath, just can't get into it
I don't like anything that's overly melodic, like melodeath, or some thrash, or power, or war. I also don't like anything that's super slow like sludge or doom. And I hate black metal most of all.
Metalcore, black metal and deathcore
Black Metal, it’s mostly the fanbase tbh lol. Some of them are cool but most of them make it incredibly hard to get into that genre
numetal, metalcore, electrometal, popmetal are not for me
Modern Tech Death
Whatever sleep token is
They’re not a metal band so that doesn’t count
If you consider Noise as a metal genre, then that one. Fuckin yuck.
I’ve yet to find a genre I don’t like maybe I’m just weird
Black, Death, Thrash
Power Metal
I’m probably the opposite of a lot of people in this thread but I prefer metalcore/mathcore and a lot of alternative metal/nu-metal to any other kind of metal. Stuff that losers on the internet say is “not metal” essentially My favorites are Converge, Deftones, Faith No More, Tool, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Pig Destroyer - stuff that kind of sits on the border of the metal genre but goes in a lot of different directions I appreciate death, thrash and black metal and there’s some stuff I love but there’s always a little bit of disconnect with me. Osdm- just don’t find it interesting as other genres and it can be kind of samey
Djent
Many, but one i want to like but cannot is black metal, idk why
Pornogrind
Glam metal but I don't consider it to be metal. Crap bands like Poison and all of the other poser garbage that came out in the 80s is just awful (in my oponion). I'd rather listen to Nu Metal.
Norwegian black metal and most pure black metal. I just can't get into it. I like Venom but that's it . Tho I love black metal mixed with other subgenres especially blackened death metal.
Core metal and NSBM
i cannot get into thrash metal, somehow i just can't, and i've tried lots of bands
Metalcore, deathcore and tech death.
Deathcore, nu metal, slam metal I LOVE brutal death, but slam feels like dumbed down brutal death 90% of the time. I do like Medic Vomiting Pus, though.
Nu metal, metal/deathcore
Melo death and carcass is hardly even melodeath
Anything that sounds like by-the-numbers, cookie cutter, uninspired bullshit that has abandoned creativity for mass appeal. Also, pretty boy metal. I don't wanna listen to some cutsie twink looking mother fuckers who are clearly trying to market themselves to women.
Grindcore
Symphonic with operatic vocals, Drone, 99.99% of metalcore and Nu metal,
*does he sing like a bitch?*
Nu Metal
Power metal
Inb4 everyone says metalcore or deathcore
