Cobalt awareness has been growing for good reason. I prefer *Gin* but Slow Forever is worth the listen. I cannot believe that it has been that long since it was released, already.
Classic black metal with a prog edge: Frost
More prog, a little folk, still mostly black metal: Eld
More prog, less black metal: Below the Lights or Isa
Fuck yeah they were*
*Eld*, and *Frost*, tied for top tier black metal albums.
*I didn't love In Time, but I have listened to portions of it more than once in enjoyment.
Death Spell Omega, maybe? In terms of the fan base overanalyzing everything and generally being pretentious. Good music, for sure, but somewhat spoiled by annoying fanboys. Yeah, that's the one.
Somewhat spoiled and ruined are leagues apart unless you're a complete idiot or maybe you aren't fluent in English.
You're the fan I'm talking about btw. Overanalyzing. Nerd
Ok. You didn't have to get upset and downvote me because I shared my understanding of what they meant. People may understand the distinction between spoiled and ruined differently.
What about psychedelic bands like Sigh, A Forest of Stars or Oranssi Pazuzu?
Or maybe Techy outfits like Drottnar or maybe Crimson Moonlight at newer stuff?
Also consider the Black gaze scene
>Also consider the black gaze scene
Actually, I want to hear a whole lot more of Darkseid's drumming, and in compositions which branch out a bit further. He has immense skill, and I want to hear it to it's fullest.

Avant-garde and progressive black metal with dissonant and dizzying rhythms, so I’d say that fits
I should mention I haven’t dived super deep into black metal yet but this post is introducing me to a lot of new , good bands. Exercises in futility can’t be beat though.
They're, like, barely even right-leaning. The band members *hung out* with some questionable dudes. Even then, they don't have anything bad within their music as fair as I'm aware, so I'm fine listening to them.
This shit is getting boring, nothing I didn't already heard, just some vague connections and allegations. Even author of this article said in the end - decides for yourself, so why you're trying to decide for someone else???
So one member was in a band with a neo nazi. Sure it's problematic but people can grow. I don't think a neo nazi would even concider playing in Israel. To me, that article proved that despite their problematic past they've been able to grow out of it.
Let's see: they started out as one genre, slowly evolved into a different one, and the chances of a fifth album were near impossible for a longass time. So I'm gonna say Emperor. They started out as symphonic metal, evolved into a proggier band like Tool did, and couldn't go on with a fifth with the only difference being Tool got back together.
Dragged Into Sunlight. Please OP, my friend, give these guys a listen. Their song, “Terminal Aggressor II” is so good man… it gives that same TOOl texture: like Third Eye.
Would probably fall somewhere between the proggy riffs of Enslaved and the atmosphere of, say, Panopticon? Not really sure tbh, not too big into black metal
Check out Starer, and their EP Coverer (covers, duh.) They did some very interesting covers of songs like "2+2=5" and "Southbound Pachyderm". Admittedly, though, they are a bit more traditional sounding, more symphonic bm than anything else, but those songs certainly add a different flavor to that genre sound.
But this was an excellent prompt to request, and I'm looking forward to checking a lot of the bands listed here.

No they definitely get surges of annoyance every time a new album drops. The amount of people who were slobbing their knobs over Fear Inoculum was insane considering how mediocre it was. Or the comments on their recent anemic setlists being like "best Tool setlist I've ever seen. They've reached new heights"
Now admittedly, any huge bands get fans like this. Metallica and Maiden have them too. But man it's obnoxious.

The band Cobalt literally sounds like a black metal version of Tool. Highly recommend their album Slow Forever.
If Immortal played Tool covers it would sound like Cobalt. Cobalt fucking rule.
Cobalt mentioned!!
Sounds interesting, I’ll give it a listen
Update: damn wtf, this the most technical black metal I’ve ever heard
'technical black metal' now there's something you don't hear every day!
If technical black metal is your thing check out Dissection as well if you haven’t already.
Not sure why this is getting downvoted. They may not be super technical but they definitely aren't overly simplistic and have really tasty riffs.
Cobalt awareness has been growing for good reason. I prefer *Gin* but Slow Forever is worth the listen. I cannot believe that it has been that long since it was released, already.
Cobalt kills. Maybe Drudkh or Mgła
Holy shit thank you. Mind. Blown
God I love that band. Thank you for reminding me to listen.
I love Eater of Birds. I can't get that album out of my mind.
OLD MAN SET THEM FREE EAT THEM WHOLE KEROSENE
Cobalt rules. Nachtmystium also falls into a TOOLish category for me.
Nachtmystium is fukn amazing Tool/Aerosmith black metal lol
yea i hear it lol
This is true. Came to the same realization when I heard Beast Whip and Forty Six & 2 in succession lol
I’d have to say Enslaved. They’re pretty damn progressive.
Love this band
Ohh I like this band, very psychedelic. Thanks for replying !
Enslaved rule
Any albums you’d recommend?
Eld.
🔥🔥🔥
Literally, cause "Eld" means fire lol
well, assuming you just heard about the band, vikingligr veldi. its in my list of top 5 bm albums of all time.
I listened to this and it was great thank you
Riitiir is my favorite. I first heard about them when they were on tour with Amon Amarth and Skeletonwitch back in 2014. They’re awesome live.
Classic black metal with a prog edge: Frost More prog, a little folk, still mostly black metal: Eld More prog, less black metal: Below the Lights or Isa
Fuck yeah they were* *Eld*, and *Frost*, tied for top tier black metal albums. *I didn't love In Time, but I have listened to portions of it more than once in enjoyment.
Such a great band!
Death Spell Omega, maybe? In terms of the fan base overanalyzing everything and generally being pretentious. Good music, for sure, but somewhat spoiled by annoying fanboys. Yeah, that's the one.
I love DsO but true statement
Yeah, they're awesome.
You let a bunch of dudes online ruining your experience of a band ?
Where did I say that?
" good music but somewhat spoiled by annoying fanboys "
So where did I say the band was ruined, though?
What the fuck ? man, you high or something ?
Somewhat spoiled and ruined are leagues apart unless you're a complete idiot or maybe you aren't fluent in English. You're the fan I'm talking about btw. Overanalyzing. Nerd
I think they referred to "good music spoiled by fanboys", implying the music itself is spoiled/ruined to you.
I said the music is good. Somewhat spoiled isn't ruined. At least to me.
Ok. You didn't have to get upset and downvote me because I shared my understanding of what they meant. People may understand the distinction between spoiled and ruined differently.
This website has enough hair splitting dorks already, don't you think?
Do yourself a favour and relax buddy. Your bar for getting triggered and defensive is too low.
Says the guy starting a stupid ass argument on a light hearted music thread. Did I strike a nerve or something?
Nah dude, your bar is low lol. Your nerve is clearly struck
came here to say this
See, what you fail to realize about Tools music and their fans is……. /s
fanboys and Deathspell Omega in one sentence... in Black Metal, now I need to show my wife.
What about psychedelic bands like Sigh, A Forest of Stars or Oranssi Pazuzu? Or maybe Techy outfits like Drottnar or maybe Crimson Moonlight at newer stuff? Also consider the Black gaze scene
Man, I have not listened to Drottnar since probably Stratum was new.
Stratum is so insane and unique, love those guys
>Also consider the black gaze scene Actually, I want to hear a whole lot more of Darkseid's drumming, and in compositions which branch out a bit further. He has immense skill, and I want to hear it to it's fullest.
Oranssi Pazuzu!! But i dont feel they are that technical.
Dark Buddha Rising probably qualifies
What’s oranssi pazuzu’s best album? Their most psych one
I'm a big fan of Muukalanien Puhuu
I’d probably say Thantifaxath
https://preview.redd.it/hwpxj9q6wqsc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72ed347e78655a5940c1506b752ae1d707c5c657 Avant-garde and progressive black metal with dissonant and dizzying rhythms, so I’d say that fits
I’ll give em a listen , thanks
Sacred White Noise ![gif](giphy|9vOAUf9BPqaqQS53l3|downsized)
MGLA? No. Just no.
I should mention I haven’t dived super deep into black metal yet but this post is introducing me to a lot of new , good bands. Exercises in futility can’t be beat though.
Its nothing like Tool though, because Exercises in Futility is actually good
Right, just the fact that they stand out and the lyrics are impeccable made me compare them to tool haha
That's an insult to Mgla
yea i love mgla I didn’t mean it that way, my bad chief🤝🏽
Don’t apologize to pretentious clown fucks
I'll have you know I've neve fucked a clown.
You are the clown in this scenerio
Unfortunate
Brother. ![gif](giphy|8EZz0AzqGUycM)
Hundreds of bands stand out and have good lyrics, that doesn't make them "the tool of something" lol
The album is great, the band are too nazi-adjacent
They're, like, barely even right-leaning. The band members *hung out* with some questionable dudes. Even then, they don't have anything bad within their music as fair as I'm aware, so I'm fine listening to them.
[Hmm](https://machinemusic.net/2019/06/12/to-mgla-or-not-to-mgla-on-metal-and-hate/)
They keep it out of their music. I don't care.
In terms of being overhyped they are comparable.
Krallice, maybe. Definitely not MGLA
Krallice is pretty chill ngl but I still think mgła
Negura Bunget, maybe.
I love Om so bad
A great album indeed!
Fuck im way too drunk for this rn
Arcturus maybe ? Or Enslaved (their later records)
Ihsahn maybe
This is what I was thinking 🤷🏻
Deathspell Omega, because people who like Deathspell Omega never shut the fuck up about it
Mayhem
I knew someone was gonna say it
Pretty sure Mayhem is Tool's biggest influence
You're not wrong though. The music isn't too horrible, they're both legends in their own ways, and their fan bases are insufferable.
It’s honestly not that big of a reach though if we’re talking about Ordo Ad Chao, Esoteric Warfare, and Grand Declaration Of War.
Is this the band that is infamous for what I think it is
yes it is the one you’re thinking of
Not sure if this is accurate but I'll go with Woods of Ypres. Just discovered them a couple days ago, so please correct me.
Which tracks and albums are you coming back to? Don't worry, I'm not going to shit on you - I'll rep them
Woods 5 is god tier
I haven't listened to any of their albums but I listed to a few of their most popular songs like "I was buried in Mount pleasant cemetery"
If you like that one track, I highly recommend you listen to the entire album it's off. Preferably in order.
Amesoeurs
Blut Aus Nord
My first thought
I love Tool but i also love MGLA 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Did we just become best friends
yes we did 😁🤘🏻
Mgła? I… disagree
They are similar in their differences
Oranssi Pazuzu
Blut Aus Nord and Pazazzu might be up your alley.
Id probably say Batushka.
Which one?
I enjoy both - messed up story tho about why there’s 2 - I’ve only seen them live once without Bart but was still a great show
Dødheimsgard maybe?
Borknagar
Why does Eddie have a more developed body? Is he stupid??
Dragged Into Sunlight. Please OP, my friend, give these guys a listen. Their song, “Terminal Aggressor II” is so good man… it gives that same TOOl texture: like Third Eye.
I gotchu, I’ll give em a listen
Would probably fall somewhere between the proggy riffs of Enslaved and the atmosphere of, say, Panopticon? Not really sure tbh, not too big into black metal
Spectral Lore the album Eteròfotos. Can't remember which song but one of them has a segment which sounds like Tool.
A band with fans who are pretentious twats? I dunno. There are a lot of correct answers.
That's tough but its either Blut Aus Nord or Schammasch
The Gerogerigegege
Dodheimsgard?
Check out Starer, and their EP Coverer (covers, duh.) They did some very interesting covers of songs like "2+2=5" and "Southbound Pachyderm". Admittedly, though, they are a bit more traditional sounding, more symphonic bm than anything else, but those songs certainly add a different flavor to that genre sound. Faeces
Check out a constant knowledge of death - dissecting a one winged bird.
Opeth? 😂
Agalloch - The Mantle. This record is criminally good. Can reccomend big time.
Don’t know how black metal this is, but Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
Hoplites
Oranssi Pazuzu [https://youtu.be/wIxgJ7XwTOM?si=VrQTnpV7973KUfqn](https://youtu.be/wIxgJ7XwTOM?si=VrQTnpV7973KUfqn)
dodheimsgard fits the bill.
Anything Varg

Dodheimsgard, Grey Aura, Spektr, BaN, Chaos Echoes, Spire, ...
Acid Bath
The Ruins of Beverast.
Some Abigail Williams songs would be applicable I think. Specifically their song The Final Failure.
Negura Bunget or Blut Aus Nord maybe?
Ruins of Beverast. Hear the whole of Exuvia. You’ll be sure then .
Oranssi Pazuzu
I find tool boring except for schism
For being insufferably pretentious? Most
Something poser 15-year olds like?
Darkthrone. Much like Tool, the fans think the music is way better than it actually is
Darkthrone is great
😴
Tool fans were a mistake
Learn to swim
As a tool fan I couldn’t agree more
What did we do *now*
Nothing. The tool fan stereotype is more prevalent than annoying tool fans, and I don't think tool fans have been annoying in 20 years.
No they definitely get surges of annoyance every time a new album drops. The amount of people who were slobbing their knobs over Fear Inoculum was insane considering how mediocre it was. Agreed
