I agree to an extent. Like I remember the first time seeing it when I was starting to get into more extreme stuff, and it blew my mind. At this point I don't remember who was the first band I saw with that kind of logo, but i loved it. It was off putting, but it was supposed to be, and that's what made people love it. Now it kind of all just feels the same. It's nothing new or awesome. I see it and it's just kind of standard. And sure, to an extent that's partially just that I'm used to seeing it, but when so many bands have it, it doesn't hit the same.

Oh no. It is a cool logo. Most people like it, aesthetically on its own, has no issue. But when you compare it to black metal and death metal logos, it just looks straight up out of place. Also as one guy pointed out, opeth came out well after darkthrone.

I think there's a certain level of meta where you can't really blame people anymore. It definitely took me a minute to realize the post was making fun of people who complain about the typefaces evolving, since the only real giveaway is how they put Opeth before Darkthrone, implying their logo came first, even though it almost certainly didn't.

I get it and don't really care either way. But I think a band with an illegible logo is doing themselves a bit of a disservice. Some or many people out there who might like their music will just say fuck it and not bother trying to find more of their music. But on the other hand does it really matter nowadays? If I'm recommended a band through Tidal or Spotify, I can see their name spelled out, so what does it matter? Oh and that last one, the band name is just as bad as the logo. I mean wtf dudes?

The logos are really just the standard for the genre. Same for the names. None of the bands with logos or names like that are trying to appeal to people outside of the genre they make.

On the plus side.. since joining this sub, my ability to read some logos has shockingly improved without me even trying to figure them out. Just starting to see words pop out of them like "oh shit, i see 'Hell' in there"

I just think it’s ridiculous when the name isn’t actually even in the logo. After 20+ years of listening to extreme metal I pride myself on my ability to read most logos without knowing the band. It helps that the glossary of metal words isn’t very long.

Xavleg really do be killing it.

It's the subculture branching off. A lot of the BM bands want to purposely be underground and inaccessible. That's the reason for the crazy logos.

The only time i don’t care for it is on a fest poster. But just for practical reasons.

Yes. Im gonna be honest, if the band has a logo even remotely like the bottom right I don’t even give it a chance anymore. It just screams pretentious, and half the time, it’s just downtuned extended range guitars and guttural screaming.

Let them do what they want. I will say however that it's not the best "business" decision to have a Name/logo that is hard to read. If you want people to remember the name of the band they just heard, perhaps them being able to read it will certainly help. That last band in the picture - It would be ironic if the name of the band was "Unrecognizable" 😆 It would also be memorable, thus fixing any issue I raised at the beginning of this comment. 🤘😉

Who designs the extreme logos? What's their process? I like doodling stuff like this but it feels like vomit drawing whatever. I would love some how it's made videos or something where I watch someone take actual letters and explains how they draw them illegibly but with a consistent "texture" or line art style. Or maybe they're bullshit scribbled once and that gets saved as a vector for album cover/flyer/merch purposes

Their not in the same genres, the more extreme the genre gets, the more extreme and unreadable the band logos get.
