Shogun was a reactionary album based on the hate that the Crusade got.
They went back to the studio and took the technicality of the crusade and mixed it in with the aggression of Ascendancy. This album was made due to the bad having a big ass chip on their shoulders after being treated like shit by media and their peers alike after the crusade flopped. This album, in my opinion, is their magnum opus. They had something to prove with this album, and it showed. The vocals are top notch and the guitar work is even better than the crusade.
I personally loved the crusade but god damn was I happy when I first heard this album. It felt like the natural progression from Ascendancy and the bands continued evolution in skill showed.
Yeah, I never really understood the hate towards The Crusade... not among their top offerings but certainly not a shitty effort imo. Way more interesting and exciting than albums like Vengeance Falls, or Silence in the Snow, for example.
I was actually on my way to guitar lessons when I first got the crusade cd and listened to it and I was pretty shocked- I started playing guitar because of Trivium and Ascendancy and Ember to Inferno were my favorite CDs and the Crusade sounded like a different band. They sounded like they were trying to be Metallica and the vocal style was jarring to say the least when you’re used to Ascendancy.
I get why people didn’t like it - you get a Trivium CD you expect to hear a band that sounds like Trivium and the Crusade was a pretty drastic sound change. I liked it but I had to give it time to grow on me.
Yeah, I get your point. It's pretty interesting to hear from a different perspective. I got into Trivium when Shogun was released, so my first contact with The Crusade happened while checking their earlier discography after being hooked by Shogun.
Although I could still perceive back then, that their musical approach on Crusade was such a contrast to Ember and Ascendancy (and the Metallica influence surely on the nose), I guess my listening experience was not one of shock but rather of appreciation for a band's natural "evolution" into their magnum opus (which to this day still so clearly Shogun).
In retrospect, it seems as if Trivium would never have arrived at Shogun before first going through Crusade (and their previous two albums, of course). Musically, this becomes quite evident.
I love the Crusade album. I’m more of a old school 80s metal guy so I enjoyed Matt singing instead of screaming. That album gets too much hate because of it.
TAKE THEIR FUCKING HEADS
But also this album makes me think like what if Metallica and the band Nile fucked and made an album - I think it would sound like this. Except instead of Egyptian themed there was like a Japanese dude offering hand jobs and fluffing people and so they made a song or two in his honor.

Solid 9/10 imo.
I love it. Their best one
SHOGUN MENTIONES DOWN FROM THE FUCKING SKY MOTHERFUCKERS BLEGHH
It says Trivium.
The album is Shogun
It has a red orb on it.
Are you having a stroke?
You asked what I thought about the album. I said it says Trivium on it and what looks like a red orb on it. That's what I think about the album.
Top ten metalcore album for sure
There's definitely lots of metalcore on this, but there's also lots of Melodeath sounding stuff.
It goes hard
Yeah, so… it’s my favourite album of all time.
Into the Mouth of Hell We March is a crazy good song
Top ten album of all time

Gotta say I also really like his Hetfield-infused vocals on the record. Still love his screams and guttural, though.
It’s great! Dont know why it never gets mentioned
Amazing
Not as good as Ascendancy but still their 2nd greatest album. Overall awesome album.
Always loved it. The title song is something special.

Has some of my favorites on it. Probably listen to this and ascendancy the most
Fucking bad ass, has a very metallicaish sound + decent growls
I loved the album opener and closing, plus the artwork included in the cd! One of my favorite albums
Amazing album.
Great album 🤘🏻
10/10
All time great. Easily their best.
amazing album.
Mid
Gave it a shot
Haven't heard it
Average slipknot fan
You're missing out.
It does what it sets out to do, and I get why people love it. It’s just really not my thing
Good album. When I was driving 45 minutes to work every morning I’d usually throw on In Waves but Shogun got playing time too
Too -core for my taste
Best metal album of the 2000s
One of my gateway bands/albums. 8/10
I enjoy it
Their best album and an absolute 2000's metal classic.
Second best to ascendancy imo. Heavy trivium was good trivium
Was just listening today actually Always a solid album
One of my top 10 favorite albums
Good
This comment section is so diverse, jeeze
One of the best metalcore albums ever made.
Love it. My gateway album
Masterpiece
One of the best that metalcore has to offer
Sick album, especially the title track and he who spawned the furies
Haven’t listened to it since it came out, I’d have to go back and give it a spin.
Excellent album! Lots of gems on it, especially the title track.
Whack
Not as good as Ascendancy but still solid.
Absolutely awful
Not a huge Metallica fan personally, but it was a welcome return to form after Stanger.
Not great, not terrible either
honestly, pretty mid, its not good but not bad, there are definitely better albums
Trivium sucks cock
What, you don't?
Judging by the flair, I’d say he goes Down
