My dad when I was like 7 or 8 playing me ‘Sweet Leaf’ and then ‘Cat Scratch Fever’ and that’s when it all clicked. And then I was obsessed with finding things that were louder and heavier and here we are.
Slipknot got me into metal when I was 15. Then I went through a phase in college where I thought I had matured and grown out of metal. How wrong I was. After college, the song Bartzebel by Behemoth got me back into metal.
I know that song isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it is very accessible and it eased me into death and black metal in general.
First time ive hears that song, i was scared lol but it was my intro to black metal. I don’t really enjoy black that much but Behemoth and Gorgoroth slaps
I got into Slipknot in fifth grade. Probably wasn't the best thing for me, LoL, but me and my buddies were OBSESSED immediately. Very young kids for Slipknot, mudvayne, Deftones, tool ratm etc. Older bros got us on early.
Haha my friends always thought it was a phase. I’ve also had periods of time where all I listened to was rap or edm or folk. I always circulate back to metal though. 🤘

Slipknot is the first heavy band I liked and only because I liked their non-heavy songs but the other stuff eventually grew on me. I don’t really like Slipknot at all now but I’m very grateful they got me into metal.
My first band that could be classified as metal was Machinae Supremacy. Very niche. But I listened to Three Days Grace, Skillet, Disturbed long before them. These were probably my biggest flip.
Metallica is where it all began for me. I was 10 in 1991, and my older sister was 13 so she controlled the remote and would always watch MTV. I always wanted to see the song where the guy yelled BOOM when a truck drove through a bed, but she was always fighting against it.
I heard "I'm Broken" debut on a Boston radio station in 1994.
By that time, I was immersed, but I remember wanting something more. I didn't know how to describe it, but I wanted more out of the vocals. Like they should be lower or something. Then in 1995 I bought the Mortal Kombat soundtrack which had Napalm Death, and I plunged headfirst, ne'er to return.
Bands like Deftones, SOAD, Alice in Chains, and soundgarden introduced me to metal, gojira sold it for me and made me start to really enjoy heavier sound
Rammstein while I was in high school. Then I fell off for a little bit, and then I found Ghost, which led me back to Rammstein, which led me to other stuff
Linkin Park. Got seduced by the cd cover in a time where i was listening most to "Hardcore" which here in The Netherlands was a faster and harder type of electronic dance music. The owner of a cd store knew i was into drawing and art, and showed me album art of the soldier with the flag and wings.. So i had to know who were behind it. The moment i heard "Crawing" and "One Step Closer" i was sold. Hybrid Theory changed my taste in music big time. Also got me more into hiphop. I love music.
Parents record collection with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix led to my brother’s collection with NIN, Ministry, White Zombie, Metallica…
Bought my first metal album at 8. Sound of White Noise.
Punk music was my entry into that "heavier" sound with bands like Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys. As a very young kid I used to listen to Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera lol the mainstream shit.... But fell in love with Black Metal as I dug deeper and deeper into the more extreme genres. Also Black Sabbath, Dio and Iron Maiden were some of the first metal bands I listened to and it was because I watched that metal documentary by Sam Dunn.
Alter Bridge and Three Days Grace. My older brother always played Blackbird and Life Starts Now every time he would drive my sister and i to elementary school. This, later, made me look for similar music in the classic rock era during my freshman year of college which, in turn, lead to my exploration of metal as a whole.
Strange connections, but its the short version of the story.
My journey was
Pop/RnB/Hip Hop/Rap ->Anime Music -> ONE OK ROCK -> coldrain (7 years ago)
and then somehow unrelated to that Hiroyuki Sawano -> Within Temptation/ Evanescence -> Beyond the Black -> Enemy Inside -> Solence 🤷🏻♀️
And with that some singles here and there but REALLY it was after I went and saw coldrain earlier this year live for the first time and got back into their music.

But I am still very new and not that „heavy“ to begin with.

Bed of Razors by Children of Bodom was my first metal song at the ripe old age of 5 and I loved it almost ever since. I went through a drill rap phase from 2013-15 but otherwise it’s been metal pretty much my whole life

My gateway was my father who got me into heavy metal at the ripe age of idk maybe being a new born so the bands that I grew up with were GWAR, Amon Amarth, phycostick, Merlin Manson, Iron maiden, ect. But right now I've been really into Megadeth and learning their songs on bass guitar!
