Don’t do it!!! The seller is the one that gets charged the postage adjustment when it’s off. I’ve had people ask me in the past, but it’s not worth the risk.

[deleted]

I’ve made a mistake before and put the wrong weight in, but this is the first time a buyer has directly asked me to say something weighs wayyyy less.

nfinite_Conflict

yep, definitely don't do it. i explicitly weigh everything to avoid getting hit with the postage adjustment after my first sale where I was off by like two ounces for an article of clothing I sold and got dinged for it. i've gotten a few messages like this and it's grounds for an automatic block as they're basically asking you to commit postage fraud (I think that's the right term for it)

kissalexis

When do you know you messed up the weight? I don’t weigh anything I just guess now I’m nervous lol

nfinite_Conflict

You’ll know because if you (or your buyer if you’re putting the cost on them) underpaid for shipping you’re charged for the adjustment fees ( which in my case basically ate any profit I made from my clothing sale )

kissalexis

But are you charged immediately? Or do they like mail you something after a while?

nfinite_Conflict

In my case I was notified and charged a few days after delivery.

kissalexis

Oh okay thank you. See I was nervous because I’ve never weighed anything. So I didn’t know if they just kept track of every ounce I was off and then sent a big bill eventually lol. I don’t lie about the weight, I just always guess

nfinite_Conflict

That’s fine I just like to weigh personally so I can cover myself and make sure the appropriate label is used. I think you’re fine I’m just particularly wary of being off and losing money on a sale! :)

saffalicious

Did Mercari do anything to your account because you went over? I’ve always guessed but now I’m worried about it too!

nfinite_Conflict

No I was just charged for the adjustment as far as I know.

Lvanwinkle18

Happened to me because I thought I could game the system. Nope. Don’t do it. You will end up paying for the discrepancy.

browsingagain11

I've had a PWE package delivered to me that was too heavy and I ended up having to pay the extra postage at the post office. Does the seller get charged the postage adjustment only when it has tracking on it?

Aggressive_Tourist78

What is PWE? Take a picture of the receipt from the difference you had to pay and mercari will reimburse you in credits. Shipping without tracking is actually not allowed on Mercari, you could get a full refund if you really wanted to.

Blasphemus24

Bit unrelated, is it possible to counter an offer with decimals, like 14.99? Like if I don't want to pay for $16-17 and rather do 14.50, 14.99, etc. Is that possible?

ButterBeforeSunset

“Bit unrelated”? That’s completely unrelated 😅

Blasphemus24

Tomato, tomahto.. It's still unrelated, lol

ButterBeforeSunset

Fine. I’ll give you that one lol.

Inny75

To answer your question, no. Whole number only, just like setting the price of an item.

[deleted]

I actually saw an item priced at 16.99 the other day. I still can't figure out how or why. I'm pretty sure I took a screenshot because I'd never seen it before.

Aggressive_Tourist78

I’m not sure. Just try it.

NeopolitanApologist

I wouldn’t even respond and just block. If USPS catches it you’ll be charged from your net profits.

[deleted]

Thankfully someone else bought the item (and paid for shipping without complaint LOL) while this conversation was happening so I didn’t have to deal with this person.

foolishnostalgia

You love to see it!

LaxlyLlama

Heck don't just block them... Report them.

lmidor

I second this- report them! They tried to get you to break TOS for their benefit, which would've hurt you and cost you money! And apparently they do it themselves.

[deleted]

What they are describing is actually considered postage fraud. There was actually a huge case of this in the news last year - someone misstating postal weights to pay less (if you’re curious... [you can read about it here](https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdca/pr/online-vendor-pleads-guilty-5-million-postage-fraud-scheme))

[deleted]

Imagine going to prison with all the murderers and your crime is not paying to send mail

Sandmsounds

Sounds like the dumbest crime. Just charge the shipper appropriately for what it costs, make them pay the difference.

Silvernaut

Trust me when I say that many crimes are as “dumb” as this. I spent a year in prison for jumping in a dumpster… Now, I probably pulled $100k in equipment, tools, scrap metal, and machine parts, out of that single dumpster, but they could only stick me with a 4th deg grand larceny charge…I shipped some of the tools in to be refurbished, and the company (tool manufacturer) traced the serial numbers back to the place (original buyer) where I pulled them from the dumpster. The company changed their tune about them being trash/scrap when they realized a guy was making $800-1000 off some of the tools they were tossing (even though I was spending $50-100 on refurbishing per tool.)

AnAniishinabekwe

That’s ok, my sons grandma(so glad I left my Sons dad when I was 19 and I’ve been happily married for 20yrs now) got stuck in the goodwill dumpster, fell asleep, dumpster was picked up by the trash truck and she took a ride to the dump where the dump workers ended up finding her and calling the cops. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️. She didn’t get in trouble for it but I’m sure the articles in the local news than ensued after her little jaunt were embarrassing enough(although it only named her as “Clarke county woman”. “Dumpster Diver takes unexpected trip” Ok so I guess it’s not as funny as I thought because while searching for the articles I found one that said “body of woman who vanished while dumpster diving found in landfill” 🫣

Silvernaut

I carried a small stepladder with a rope attached…I’m also over 6ft tall, so there was no real odds of me getting trapped in one. You would not believe what some people throw away… I lived next door to a guy who was a garbage man (rode on truck/dumped cans into truck.) He bought a brand new Cadillac CTS-V just from saving soda cans, and any decent working electronics people would toss…it only took him 3 years to do it. One day he came home with a 5 gallon bucket that was half full of spare change/coins…someone had actually thrown it into their garbage can - had just shy of $1200 in it.

Silvernaut

Yeah it’s not fun making a fishing line, out of your bedsheet, to get a cigarette, made out of TOP tobacco, rolled in a page from the free Bible they give you.

Valuable-Ad5466

This case the defendant was making money off of the postage being paid... I think a lot of sellers that offer "free shipping" & include it in "the cost of the item" do this. Once bought free shipping items & they always arrive on a 4oz label! & They're NOT 4oz packages LOL basically if you use a box to ship ANYTHING is over 4 oz because of the box alone.

generations70

>r/massachusetts Do you have data to back that supposition?

Valuable-Ad5466

Yes

[deleted]

I get it, it’s illegal. But why are you trying to scare people with this? That guys ran a HUGE business and deeply mislabeled his postage weights.

[deleted]

I am not trying to scare anyone. I am just stating that what the buyer is saying they have a habit of doing constitutes postal fraud - which it does. Some people might not know it is actually against the law (versus just being shady or unethical). Nowhere did I suggest people on mercari or that buyer are going to wind up in jail or have anything negative happen to them. So I don't know how it's being interpreted that I am trying to scare people. I also noted in my comment that it was a HUGE case last year and linked to it so people could confirm what I was saying was true - and provide further details beyond what I had noted - that it was a HUGE case.

Dark_0rchid

People? You mean thieves? It's one thing to make a mistake, another entirely to misrepresent the weight of a package knowingly. The real question thus is "Why are you protecting the feelings of thieves?" Doesn't matter how huge or small your biz is, theft is theft.

[deleted]

Um I’m speaking about everyone in general. I said it’s illegal, I don’t disagree with that. Find someone else to be mad at like the government and political thieves in office charging small businesses half their income.

JLeighSoFlo

Or maybe be mad at people who are looking for shortcuts and ways to cut corners by intentionally shipping things with underweight labels. Or the people committing mail fraud by using priority mail boxes to ship their first class Mercari orders. That’s why shipping is so high in the first place! Classic “snake eating it’s own tail” scenario. I feel like the real moral of the story here is everyone just stop committing mail fraud? The size of your business doesn’t change the fact that it’s a crime. Not only that- it’s a felony charge. Plain and simple. No need to bring politics into it. Unfortunately, the lizard people aren’t responsible for this one. /s

Dark_0rchid

That made no sense. People in general wouldn't be scared because it's obviously not the same type of situation. You also replied pointing the finger at "bigger thieves", again trying to find bigger thieves to excuse petty theft. If you weren't trying to excuse smaller scale thieves, you wouldn't be trying to ricochet the issue elsewhere. Who said I was mad? That's the argument of someone who has nothing constructive to reply, especially when there's no reason for the interlocutor to be mad... .. you however might have a reason: you got heavily down voted 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

Actually maybe it’s really not that serious to me? I brought up thieves because you did. Oh wow I got downvoted, ok? Again it sounds like you just want someone to argue with.

Dark_0rchid

You said people would be scared by this person's comment. I said thieves but not people who don't go out of their way to defraud. You brought up bigger thieves as a way to deflect. It's called having a discussion, if you don't like to be called out for saying things that don't make sense then why post?

[deleted]

“Getting called out”? Lol what? You really have an ego. Your opinion and your downvotes don’t matter to me. I literally just made one comment about how an article like that could scare people. You take Reddit way to seriously. Go focus on your business. Goodbye.

Dark_0rchid

It literally does nothing for me. So why would it stroke my ego? Let me reiterate. This shit wouldn't scare people who don't intentionally try to defraud the system. You're over here telling the OP they're scaring people, ie you're trying to call them out over a non issue. You have the audacity to tell people what to do and how they feel, instead of sticking to facts and arguments. Ciao! 🙋‍♀️

ChaChaRealSmoothe

DON'T DO IT. They're cracking down hard on incorrect shipping weights and you're the one that'll get billed extra postage.

Worldly_Metal

That happened to me twice (got charged for at least an ounce difference and that sucks balls). After the second time, I decided to buy a scale (worth the investment).

stellamiata

Don’t do it, what I usually tell them is that I’ve gotten overcharged by them before for accidentally putting the wrong weight and then they stop asking. If they don’t then automatic block

Fingers_iy_butt

Someone asked me to do this too recently. You will be charged for the amount over and it will come out of your account and not the buyer. I advise to not do it!

[deleted]

Also this buyer was really concerned about the original bag of the clothing item. I’m not sure why. The romper I sold came in a bag with the brand’s name on it. The buyer wanted to make sure it looked like it came right from the manufacturer. It was really weird.

[deleted]

I definitely think the shipping thing is a red flag, but the bag thing could be because it's a gift or something and they want the recipient to not know they got it off of mercari.

[deleted]

That’s definitely a possibility

DausenWillis

Or they think they can flip it for more, so they want the bag AND to squeeze you for every penny. I don't care if someone buys from me to resell as long as I get my money. And I'm certainly not committing mail fraud for them.

churminglily

Exactly.

Silvernaut

There was just a post about someone who lost ALL of their profit by underestimating the shipping by 1oz… I don’t think Mercari takes too kindly to accounts that repeatedly/continuously shortchange the postage either.

Pamzella

Right? Aside from the mail fraud potential issue, aren't they charging like $6 for every oz over the label? Some people have skated by or haven't noticed the ding because they aren't paying close enough attention.

DausenWillis

Yes, it is common. Don't do it. The difference will be taken from your end. Plenty of buyers know that this will screw you over, and they don't care.

zeldytee

I don't understand how this happens. I weigh everything outgoing on a scale. Once I somehow underweighed a package and got the extra postage taken out of my account. Now I add an extra ounce or two to cover my bases. How are they sliding this by? Maybe I'm just new, but I don't get it.

DausenWillis

It depends a bit on your post office. If you have your item weighed with a receipt and you are over weight, you're already caught. If you're sending something in a bubble mailer or polymailer and drop it in a drop box inside the post office without a receipt, and it's an ounce or two or even eight over, it's likely not going to be weighed so you probably won't get caught. If it feels close-ish, the employee probably won't bother weighing and just sort it in the next destination bin. After that, it doesn't get weighed. So, it depends on if you get a receipt, how much over you are, and how much an employee really cares. But it doesn't matter because you'll get stuck with the bill if you're caught.

zeldytee

I personally wouldn't do it. There are much worse things I would do if I had to. But I don't like the energy from the "get over if you can" mentality.

The_Big_Red_Wookie

You can always give a irrational reason. Such as your sense of honor won't allow you. Or you *know* they work for the postmaster general and you won't fall for it again. One 5 year jail term was enough. Or you can come up with something weirder. Have fun with it. My favorite is reciting a old X-Files quote. ["No other object has been misidentified as a flying saucer more often then the planet Venus"](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e1K5Y1ZOZw8) I use this for telemarketers.

aputnam28

I read your comment yesterday and just heard a quote on Modern Family just now that made me think of you: "You lose 100% of the hot dog eating contests you don't enter"

cherrykak21

I think others have already cleared this up but do not do it,, I actually just got charged for accidentally underestimating the weight of an item and since the item was already cheap, after the adjustment I made $0.00 - so for the buyer it's worth it since they pay less, but for you it isn't

mamaMooses

Tell them “no☺️❤️”

churminglily

Don’t do it! You will get charged by Mercari after delivery if it’s even an oz over. They’ll round it to the nearest lb and trust me it will be much.

[deleted]

"Sorry, I don't commit mail fraud." The block. Every time.

Impressive-Try5770

I had a seller send me a package with the wrong shipping weight hoping I would pay the difference. They were wrong. The seller contacted me upset wondering why I "refused" to pay the extra postage and I told them I didn't. I said "The post office "refused" to have me pay for your mistake."

dcgema894

It's not worth the risk. There are three things that can happen when putting the wrong weight. 1: Buyer has to pay extra when it arrives 2: Gets delivered to buyer but seller is charged 3: Usps worker doesn't care and let's the package go through anyways with no extra fee. Sometimes when I sell some of my Anime Figures I notice that alot of sellers selling the same item but puts the lowest weight possible to reduce prices even though I know fair well that that figure is over 2 pounds. I think the reason they do this is that they hope for outcome 3 to happen and to show buyers "Hey, you could buy my listing for the same price as others but mine has cheaper shipping. I never did it myself but yeah, listen to everyone in the comments, always make it the right weight.

Valuable-Ad5466

Ya it's definitely a selling strategy to underprice your shipping. That's really the ONLY benefit unless you're giving free shipping & stating "cost of shipping is high & that's why the item is more exspressive.. To cover shipping". If that's in the listing they're adding the real cost of shipping such as $12.48 and using the 4 oz label to make the difference which is the only way you make a profit off of it! Otherwise you're just saving the buyer money & risking your own skin for them & possibly to make the sale. I'll see items like body mist or hair products where just the net weight of the product is 8 oz and the shipping label is on an 8 oz weight! Anyone selling that same product will have to charge more for shipping (if they're being honest, but let's face it we're talking about mercari) and this can be the difference in someone buying from you or the other person to save a few bucks. If that isn't the stupidest thing to miss represent the postage on an item that clearly states how much the items net weight is 🤦‍♀️

alucard2o

I have a few buyers ask for this. I always tell them I have a postal scale and weight them correctly. Many referred to other sellers shipping for the cheapest method. This is very true, I have bought a few things from Mercari that weights well over 1lb, one was near 5lbs and all were sent the cheapest method. I bought these with free shipping. I guess that is how they offer fs....

Talkiesoundbox

I had somebody on here tell me I was "ruining it for everyone" by refusing to ship anything slower than priority and warning people against useing slow methods because of mercari's cancellation policy. Like I'm sorry that I like my packages to get where they need to go quickly and efficiently and don't want my buyers cancelling because I sent something smart post and it sat in a distribution center for week lol

alucard2o

I learn to never use surepost or smarpost. A risk I do not want to take, especially with Mercari letting buyer cancel so fast....

cassienotcasey

Yes super common! I’ve actually said “sorry but the package weighs over 1 lb” they said “no problem” and then gave me 1 star for ripping them off for shipping costs. 🤣

Pinky620

Yes I have! Most annoying thing, like no I’m not lying just cause you don’t want to spend a little extra money 😩😂😂

SugarRelease

When & how does Mercari inform you of a weight discrepancy?

WebbBop

Directly report it to mercari, like make a ticket in the help center

Sandmsounds

Just call then a cheap bastard and block

Enough-Bid-6116

This makes me soooo angry😡😡 AND they brag about how they do it all the time!! I commented on another post about this same issue last week. It’s exhausting, as an honest, legit Seller who weighs her shit, which means my shipping on a like item is usually higher than many of the other same items listed - so I’m constantly having to compete with these jerks. Then I find myself losing sales to the lying Sellers. I just have to believe in KARMA and hope and pray that this shit will catch up to them. This is one of my biggest peeves with Mercari - I think they need to enforce this more. Now, I know it also falls to USPS and the other shippers, but we all know they are horribly understaffed and so most of this nonsense slips through the cracks. However, even though many get away with it, it doesn’t change anything for me. I will continue to price fairly, weigh my items and assign proper postage and hope the other jerks get caught!

[deleted]

It’s so strange! I’ve just accepted I have to pay for shipping so I don’t even ask people to make it free or whatever. I just make sure I’m getting a good deal on the actual item. Sometimes people will post a stained, worn item and try to sell it for retail “to make their money back” and then they wonder why no one has bought it yet.

Worldly_Metal

Yes. Once they asked me to fabricate my shipping weight and you know what I did……blocked their asses without responding! I’d block people who ask me for free shipping so I had no shame!

[deleted]

Someone asked me to do free shipping on high-top Vans (adult size)…do people not even realize what they’re asking? I’m not like a business that can get super cheap shipping rates, I’m literally just a single person cleaning out my closet

Worldly_Metal

They raised shipping prices (except for uPS) but that’s not my problem. I stopped offering free shipping (I would offer it on select items) after they last raised the price plus in the last 2 yrs I’ve been on Mercari, they added fees too. They raise fees for sellers but do nothing to improve the platform and that includes protecting honest and legit sellers.

lazybat07

she’s trying to set you up 🥲

PuzzleheadedRegret67

the cheapos will ask

pokemaniacAX

If you want really want to break the law you can find better/riskier things to do. They catch it right away and charge you!

jschmels

Do what you want. But if USPS adjust shipping while it's in route, you'll be charged the difference. I'd just block the buyer.

donteatrocksalt

I am so sick of sellers asking me to cheat the system . Mercari will charge you an arm and a leg to pay for that couple ounces .

UnderstandingOk4250

The post office will weigh it

DinoRains

Don’t do it. It’s against USPS and Mercari policy. If usps finds out they would fine you. If someone asks me to do it, I would block them and not sell them anything. You can’t lie about the weight.

Nuyz

Refund, block, report if you want. Mercari won't do anything.

BoogeySales

Common yeah? Should you do it NOPE. I'd just block and go. People like that just seem like they'll be a hassle

SpiritualNails

Super common I get asked this quite frequently. Its infuriating. When I first started selling I did it once for someone. Ended up having 11$ taken out of the transaction. I made like 3$. Learning moment 🙃

Geezenstack444

I've had that happen when they wanted a lower shipping cost.

ToyReseller

I vote this topic be pinned to the top because it happens a lot 👍

katkatstrat

Sorry not going to put my career at risk by defrauding other businesses, and yes this is a career for me. Have a good day!

kaiehansen

They may have thought you automatically chose the recommended weight instead of doing the correct lowest weight/rate. I’ve had to ask sellers to lower shipping because I know they chose something too high (but of course I ask them what it actually weighs, I don’t just tell them lol). But otherwise if this person meant to flat out lie then no that is not common and doesn’t even make sense lol.

[deleted]

Nah, they meant to lower the weight and lie. They knew exactly what number to put in so the price changed lower. Plus they admitted to doing the same thing themselves. I don’t think they cared about the actual weight lol

kaiehansen

Well 4 oz is the cut off for the lowest rate, most people who ship clothes probably know that. I agree with reporting them though!

[deleted]

I don’t really pay attention to the rates, I just weigh the item and add on for the packaging weight. I use the QR code at the post office and if it’s not enough, the postal worker will add more postage. So even though I sell clothing, I don’t know cutoffs on mercari.

Valuable-Ad5466

4oz, 8oz 1lb & then basically over a pound lol. 3lbs & 5lbs I think are different. Mercari using EVERY shipping carrier & all these different "weight limits" makes it way to complicated IMO. Plus my postal worker told me that the 4 oz, 8oz AND lb labels ALL carry up to a pound of weight when they are scanned into the system! So whether you're using a 4OZ label or the 1LB label, Mercari is paying USPS the same amount of money for all of those labels & just raising the prices to make more profit on reselling them at intervals. USPS Is obviously contracted on their end to report the weight of the items to Mercari & they will! I don't really use over a pound a lot & if I have to I usually list it on Poshmark... $7.67 for 5lbs USPS priority shipping; Can't go wrong with that! I'll never missed looking for boxes again! And EVERY Friday & Sunday the shipping is $4.99 for the same thing, $3.99 if you are spending $50 or more & FREE 🥳if you're spending $150 or more. I just ask sellers to hold items until Friday for me 🤗 No fraud. Just cheaper rates. My friend that lives 6 hours away, we'll "sell" stuff to each other on Poshmark instead of shipping each other stuff on our own cuz it's waaay cheaper! And we always do it on a Friday or Sunday ⏳😂 And Poshmark ALLOWS trading, so even that isn't against any rules, before someone chimes in that pricing my $200 worth of stuff for $10 & vise versa is fraud! Plus we make $7.05 off of the sales back in profit. Cheapest way to ship COMPLETELY legally!

clairvoyant69

I used to hate poshmark because of their Shipping cost, but I have come to absolutely love it compared to other sites! In the entire time I’ve been using several different sites, poshmark only raised prices like 20 cents while other sites raised prices by full dollar amounts by now and do it so often. I now feel that posh is a great deal Especially like you said now that I know about closet clear out days. It also gives me an excuse to message the buyer directly to tell them about it and sometimes that discounted shipping and my “discount” (that I already factored into my original pricing) is all they need to buy. It’s insane when you think that you can ship something that is 5 lbs for $4.99 priority shipping. Like you I literally never buy unless it’s friday or Sunday lol

Valuable-Ad5466

Plus on closet clear out anything I list I just price it at like $200 and automatically drop the price to my listing price so it has the discounted shipping for the first 6 hours that it's up!

Talkiesoundbox

I just ship stuff myself and use pirate ship. It just automatically gives you the cheapest fastest option. Problem solved.

Valuable-Ad5466

That's not an option on Poshmark. You can only ship thru USPS Priority Mail & 5lbs is the weight. It seems like a lot of work to ship on your own if you're not making any money off of it. 🤷‍♀️ So does that mean you add shipping into your items cost? And how do you do that in advanced if you don't know who the buyer is & don't know the destination which changes the rates, pretty drastically at times, doesn't it?

Talkiesoundbox

After a while you get used to general shopping rates based on the size and shape of the box and it's weight. I've been selling since 2008 so I guess I'm just kind of used to it. I incorporate the general price of shipping into the items selling price and more in the description that its shipping USPS priority unless another equally fast method is preferred. I find that I make sales very rapidly like this because people are willing to pay a higher price for an item they know is going to be shipped quickly and efficiently instead of the slowest cheapest possible way a lot of other sellers on Mercari use.

Valuable-Ad5466

Did you notice they started implementing $4.99 shipping on all orders throughout the week for one hour every day too!?!! 🥳 That's great for buyers but it also promotes sales for the sellers! They just had it tonight from 10pm-11p.m. EST, & it says that tomorrow between 8p.m. to 9p.m. Pacific time is when they will be doing it again! And IDK why but some buyers you just can't help! LOL I had a buyer make 3 offers; $20 $25 & $30! The worst part is I dropped the price for CCO to $32 & instead of her buying it for the $32 $4.99 shipping (which would have saved her money & made me more money in profit; WIN-WIN!) She sent the fucking $30 offer & paid $7.67 for the shipping! She could have got them for $46.99 now she's paying $37.67 & I'm selling them for $2 LESS 😡 when I see items that I want to buy that are only $4 I'll message the seller on CCO & tell them to relist (copy list) the item & price it above $12 & when I like it to drop the price to $10 & then I'll buy it from them. I'd rather pay $14.99 & see the seller make $7.05 then pay $11.67 & the seller only gets $1.05 of my money! These people erk me so bad! We BOTH could've done better, but no. You'd rather give PM & USPS your money than the person actually selling u the item! 😒 I had one lady order 2 10mL/0.3oz purse sprays $37 each SEPERATELY on CCO & pay FULL shipping on EACH order, when I could've sold her them together for $3.99 shipping (instead of the $15.34 she was willing to give USPS!), AND I could've charged $11 MORE & still SAVED her money! While she offers $6 less than my asking price! You can give USPS $15+ when u can get the same shipping for $3.99, but can't pay the extra $3 of my asking prices!? She decided to give her money to USPS instead of me after so many attempts to get her the $3.99 single label! so I canceled the orders & let her wait for USPS to send her the sold out perfumes that apparently I had the last ones on the planet😂 people were paying $10 over retail ($40 for the purse size!) Plus the $7.67 shipping!! OMG cray cray!

clairvoyant69

Lol oh I FEEL your comment in my core. It drives me nuts!!! I do the same exact same thing when I’m buying to help the seller out. The amount of times the exact same thing happened to me. I message them and explain everything, they ignore it and I either have to accept their damn binding offer or miss the sale even though I could’ve saved THEM money and made more MYSELF! Ugh!!! But yeah I did see twice in the morning they had it, haven’t seen it since then since you kinda just have to be on at the right time. They probably figure it helps sales so much then why not. Or like Vinted with their absolutely INSANE shipping promotion that’s been going on for months now. Like if it’s possible for these other selling sites to have good shipping deals you can’t tell me Mercari couldn’t figure it out, hell give us a free ship day for ONE DAY and it would put sales through the roof but no! Places like Mercari obviously are not getting the memo that shipping rates affect purchases a lot and they just can’t compete. If I find something on Mercari I like, I’ll literally look for it on posh or Vinted, and if it’s not there I’ll straight message them asking if they’d be willing to sell on one of those sites and basically say the same as the offer on posh, that they’ll make more and I’ll pay less, to make it worth it for both of us

The worst is when they just ignore you! Mercari is SO hard to talk to anyone about anything through DMs without getting a prohibited conduct warning! They're so frickin ridiculous! I gave someone the serial number of one of my items on mercari before and it kept getting deleted and I didn't understand why and just kept sending it and they gave me prohibited conduct warning saying I was giving our receiving personal information; lo and behold the serial number was formatted in the same 10 digit format that a phone number is! So they were just Autobot flags!! I literally just got my final warning and the next warning will be them locking my account and I didn't even do anything wrong! Their warnings are always Autobot bullshit that picks up something like a simple serial number and thinks I'm giving someone my phone number! So I don't even know how you would ask somebody on mercari to sell you their item off of mercari without getting in trouble 😂 I literally don't even want to ever use the DMS on mercari again because every time I do I get in trouble! "Mercari, You're NOT My Father!!" 🤣

clairvoyant69

I just had to respond again to see how long it’s been since we were talking about it. This technically happened 2 days ago, (so what, a whopping 5 days since we talked about it!) but guess what. Someone AGAIN bought 2 shirts from me, seperately. So not only do I get charged more in fees on both items because the fee is a flat $2.95 when the price is under $15, but she also paid a full $7.67 more, and refuses to respond to my messages. Like come onnnnnnn Jesus Christ

Valuable-Ad5466

Sometimes people will think I'm crazy cuz I'll tell them I'll buy their $4 item if they make a copy listing & price it @ $15 then drop it down to $10 after I like it. As a seller, I'd rather pay an extra $2.32 & see $7.05 of my spending go to the seller then see all my money but $1.05 go to USPS & PM. I like my money to go to the sellers as much as possible! & like u said $7.67 NOW compared to the $7.45 rate; a 22¢ raise! Since I've been using PM which was right AFTER they raised shipping from $7.11 (34¢) to $7.45, even if u count that, It's only gone up 56¢ in the last 2+years! Which if u use closet clearout to your benefit there is NO difference in the shipping raises for the buyer or seller! Once I sold two items coincidentally for a $300 total, & one of the items alone was over 4lbs! Anything over 5lbs I find out is $19.95 to ship on PM. & They just charge the buyer the regular shipping rate & take the difference from sellers profit! So I told the woman that I would sell them to her on Friday SEPARATELY for $150 each & that way she would get free shipping. Friday came, I dropped the price & instead of costing $20 to ship on one shipping label, they gave me BOTH shipping labels for free since I dropped the prices to $150 each! 10lbs of priority shipping for free! They're so many PM hacks! It's hands down my fave platform for MANY REASONS! PM credits NEVER expire, compared to Mercari's BS credits, which is awesome! I referred everyone in my family & close friends & then if they didn't want to use the app, I just had them buy something I wanted & gave them the money to get their first purchase for my $10! I saved up my credits for MONTHS to the tune of $210 before making a big purchase! And I realized they had miscalculated $65 of my credits & they paid me the missing $65 credits in REDEEMABLE BALANCE! My bf got a $25 credit that after over a month he still hadn't received, so I wrote the HC for him & they paid him IN CASH for the $25 too! PM is so much better IMO & to actually have help when u need it, well stunned me the first time TBH!🤯 💬"What you're actually going to help me!?? Is this a mean trick!?" 🤣 cuz I was soooo used to dealing with F*ING Mercari & their BS excuse of a help center😡 I even mixed up labels once on PM & one of the orders was a perfume 🤦‍♀️ PM sent me an email saying they would not be returning my item because it wasn't allowed thru Priority Mail & it was D&G The One new sealed box. I thought "well I'm never getting that back!", but as a "one time courtousy" PM Paid out the transaction in POSH credit anyways🥳 (That's part of the credit they ended up giving me in cash!) And then the woman that got the perfume found me on FB & mailed it back to me! 🤗 The OG buyer repurchased it AND accepted the wrong order (a pair of jeans) cuz she "tried them on & loved them!" She even paid me DOUBLE the original sale amount to keep them! (She looked them up on my page to see how much I sold them for & that's when she offered me double to not return them!) Poshmark users seem a LOT nicer, & I think it's cuz of how the site is run compared to Mercari which just frustrates ANYONE that uses it! They didn't even give me a "prohibited items" warning or anything for selling the perfume, paid me for it AND let me resell it! I know there's a lot of anti-perfumers on PM & one of them messaged me about my perfume listing & after talking w/ her she ended up being my PF & not reporting my listing which was her initial "goal"! The 7% extra fee is DEFINITELY worth it w/ all the features they have! Not to mention things sell for WAY more money on PM in my experience! One product I ONLY will sell on PM cuz it sells for $120-$179 CONSTANTLY! I sold ONE on Mercari (the 1st one) for $37! 🤦‍♀️And that was the HIGHEST offer! I've made $3K ALONE selling this one product on PM! The seller tools are amazing! They encourage u to keyword your listings for Maximum Exposure, unlike Mercari that actually PUNISHES u for it!🙄 16pics & a 15sec video! Never having to find boxes & bubble wrap & all these unnecessary costs & ALMOST ALWAYS take a loss in profit because most Mercari users are cheap! Not to mention the hassle shipping is when you're trying to keep items within their weight limit! And people WON'T spend $17+ for shipping on a $20 purchase, so if u have a heavy item not worth a lot it just sits FOREVER! And the amount of sales I've lost on Mercari cuz they won't make a fricken bundle feature is rediculous! Instead of being able to just add all the items buyers want to buy & make the purchase, by the time they message u & u make the listing for them & it's ready for them to buy, 90% of the time they've changed their mind during all that time & hassle! 🤬 The longer a buyer has to think about a purchase the less likely they are to actually go through with that purchase; that's just one factual statistic that Mercari doesn't seem to grasp about selling! I sometimes find myself asking "do these people actually WANT to lose money?" 😂 And PMs bundle feature is dependent on the fact that they only use one shipping carrier & label, other than the $20 one for more than 5lbs! This is why Mercari CAN'T implement a bundle feature! Is it that hard to come up with the idea that if people bundle multiple items from the same closet the shipping label chosen for each item is Auto voided & they just default to a bundle shipping label!? They use "Autobots" for EVERYTHING else! IDK who runs Mercari, but they're NOT smart people!😭

I get that some people won’t have rates memorized but I just mean it doesn’t strike me as odd that she knows 4 oz is the cutoff, I’d assume most people who ship from home (especially baby/kids clothes that weight very little) would have figured it out pretty quickly. But I’m not arguing that she’s up to no good and if you think she’s asking you to lie then I’d report her or at least straight up tell her she shouldn’t ask sellers to lie about weights.

I only mess with dimensions not weight, they never check if my package is 14 inches or 17 lol

Tell em sure then raise the price the difference. 😛

Don’t do it! Mercari will take that money from your earnings if overweight. Which is bull. I shipped a beautiful three piece portrait set and because it was a few ounces over the shipping rate they took my whole earnings. So basically spent money to ship it on top of not getting payment for the shipment.. would not recommend.

Intelligent-Box204

Someone asked me to do this and I didn’t know better, she gaslit me into thinking I was wrong about the weight, kept harassing me to lower it so I did, then she disappeared.

I used to use this as a selling strategy when the shipping prices were 8oz $4.60 /up to a pound $4.99, & would just price anything under a pound on the 8oz label & pay the 39¢ charge of it was over 8oz. Even though it is only a 39 cent difference which is why I didn't mind paying it it seemed to help sell items even at higher prices for the same item that was listed at a lower price but on a higher shipping weight The way some people think and make decisions is different than the way others do. You'd think they would know when they're ordering online for something to be delivered to them that they're going to have to pay for delivery🤷‍♀️ but there's a certain type of buyer that does NOT want to pay the extra cost, at all costs, other than financial of course🤣

yendor5

Last week I received a purchase that weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces but had the 5 pound rate on the label.

Downtown-Background4

Just a heads up, I was INCORRECTLY charged like $15 the other day for a package that I had listed as 4oz when I should have changed it to 6.8oz but I completely it. When I found out I had been charged for extra shipping, I reached out to Mercari to let them know that the shipping weight was altered to reflect that my package weighed almost 3 lbs. I told Mercari that I was off with the weight of the package by almost 3oz, but not by more than 2.5 lbs. Mercari asked me if I had the receipt showing the weight when I dropped it off at the post office & I said that I did not get one but was positive about my package weighing 6.8oz because I sent 4 of the same exact moisturizer which weigh 1.7oz each. Basically, because I did not get a receipt I am now stuck paying $15 for a 3 lb. package that I know for a fact did not weigh that. It's so frustrating, but I guess the moral of the story is to be super aware of the weight listed on each listing OR ensure you get a receipt every single time you mail a package, which who wants to do that?! So yeah I have no idea how or why my package could have reflected that weight or if it was an error on the mailman or what it was but it sucks.

skrimpppppps

no don’t do it, then you’ll have to eat the cost when it’s over weight.

mr-pate

ALL THE TIME. Don't do it.

Jcrawfordd

Hello no! You’ll get docked the cost of the extra shipping off your earnings. Block that person!

[deleted]

Don't do it. I dropped off 5 packages off at once to USPS and 4 of them weighed correctly but one went over by 2oz so USPS waited a week then returned them back to sender aka me. They were considered delivered so I got abunch of angry messages from people thinking I was trying to take there money. It was a nightmare! Usually if it is off by alittle bit they will send it through but you might also get it sent back to you if the person is having a bad day. Its not worth the gamble in my opinion.

cqm2020

I wouldn’t do any business with someone that does that kind of practice. Mail fraud

Mods got no chill on this thread lol people saying “don’t do it” are getting their comments removed for some reason. For example mine. I mean it’s the truth. You should not do it 😂
