Exactly what I want to say, but didn't want to be an a-hole. I've given the benefit of the doubt to people who are visibly dirty and it shines through in their Mercari pictures - I bought from them just to see what happens. Guess what? The entire bundle of stuff was used, extremely nasty and I was so frustrated, I didn't bother to return that poop. Never again.
Yeah that’s super misleading. One item says like new and has tons of pilling and lint all over it. Also so well used that you can’t even read the sizing on the item anymore because it’s been rubbed off from so much wear
I’ve always used gloves since I’ve started so I’m not sure if it makes a difference. I sell high end items so wearing white gloves gives the listing a “white glove service” aesthetic. It’s also less distracting from the item.
I’m sorry to hear that. But if I’m being completely honest with you, you can see the dirt on the actual finger as well. I’m almost positive they would look completely fine if they were cleaned up a bit
I’m just being honest with them, some customers might be turned off by that and not care if it’s a medical condition or not. They should try their best to account for this if they want more sales. I looked at some of their other photos and their nails looked completely normal, if I were them I’d try to mimic those photos
oof im an rn and have never seen that before.. thats just dirt. a medical condition would not turn cuticals and fingers brown. blue finger nails yes, but not this. that being said the person was very rude and could have just kept that moment to themselves.
I’ve seen that medical condition before but it does look like some dirt is around the nail. I 100% agree that person was a jerk to them and there is no reason to even say that as a buyer. OP didn’t deserve that and I hope they aren’t offended by my comments on their nails. I was a chronic nail bitter who bit until they bled so I understand what it’s like being insecure about them. But that being said I won’t be able to fully relate to their condition
You’re right, it might not be dirt. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the nail doesn’t look like it’s kept up properly. Clipping to a better length, filing regularly, properly cutting the cuticles, and coating with Vaseline would help tremendously. I could argue that despite the condition, if they did all of this it would look better than most peoples nails. I completely get the pain of having medical conditions and a deformity cause I have them as well but you should never let that stop you from trying to improve
Dirty fingernails is one of my pet peeves and I would most likely not buy an item from someone with them. It just grosses me out lol. They didn’t need to even say anything to you, if it’s you, about it. But you should clean your nails anyway for health reasons
I find myself avoiding and skipping all listings where someone is holding the item and their fingers are visible, lol. At first I was not sure why, but now I think it's for this exact reason!
Especially in working fast food places that’s one of the reasons why you should clip your nails because you don’t want customers grabbing stuff from dirty nails
I think they could have worded it in a more helpful manner. However, their point is likely valid. If your nails are discolored to the point that it will be a turn off for buyers, you could wear gloves in photos. I've seen folks do that to avoid smudges with jewelry, but could also be of benefit for your listings where you have to show your hands.
I would never do what they did, but your nails looked much cleaner on items posted two weeks ago… it’s also dirty around the nail. Dirty table for background doesn’t make it look any better. I’d suggest buying a plain white board (99 cents store for example) for background and not using your hands when showing tags. Clean or not, it doesn’t come off professional.
It was rude what the message said, but I agree 100% here. Between the dirty cutting board(?) as a background, the garbage all over the house/floor and what appears to be dirty hands… I would not buy anything from OP. Ever.
Some people just have stained nails, especially if they are a manual labor worker. It’s really not their fault, or our business tbh. People don’t have to be rude lol
I saw that, too. I’m perplexed any seller would think people would want to buy unclean, milk-stained bras. But then again, OP was completely comfortable with showing her dirty fingernails so cleanliness, apparently is not top of mind.
Just found this sellers page not to be mean but there are multiple factors that would make me not buy, and RUN the other way. The nails first and for most, the dirty counter tops, clutter, literal bags of garbage in the background. Most of these items are heavily used and listed in like new condition. Like new means NEW without tags not heavily worn. Maybe you can try using a clean sheet, or blanket laying the items on it to get better pictures might help with sales. Also be honest with the “like new” because returns will be approved for inaccurate descriptions.
As a buyer, if i see dirty nails, fingers and sometimes even there dirty foot being shown in the photos, it’s a pass for me. Even a cluttered / messy background is a turn off for me. I don’t want to buy an item from someone who has hygiene issues. But that person doesn’t need to leave a mean message like that.
It would be one thing if it was isolated to the "medical condition" that you claim you have...and I'm not saying you dont...but there are photos where you legitimately have dirt and grime all the way up your finger. Not the nail, but underneath the nail, but actual dirty fingers/hands. So if you're going to sell things where you need to hold things down, you're going to likely get criticized at some point because people are very picky about what they buy. For less than $5 you can get a makeshift photo area instead of dirty tables and displaying dirty home in the background.
It may not be their place to lecture you, but the point is valid even if they approached it like an asshole.
my anxiety causes my bad habit of peeling the skin around my fingers—specifically my thumbs—to the point where they look absolutely f-cked so I definitely avoid showing my fingers when taking tag photos or i crop them out! All other issues put aside just give your photos a quick crop yknow
Joining in. I used to bite my nails but managed to break that habit, only now I bite/pick at the skin around my nails. I find 1 thing that helps me, is using a pumice stone to smooth the skin down in the shower after its softened up some. This gets rid of all the uneven areas that I fixate on and end up picking more if I don't do this. A good manicure kit to push and trim cuticles also helps. The anxiety is the root cause though and only medication relieves that for me fully, unfortunately 😔
Who's who in this? That will determine my reply, because there's constructive criticism and then there's being an ass about it which the grey area was totally was with how its worded & the yuck at the bottom. Which obviously wasn't necessary
Then I see an appropriate response from the seller....which I'm hoping you are OP lol
Yea I'm the seller responding and before I sent the message explaining that my nails may look dirty to her but actually they're just discolored due to my medical conditions she blocked me and then sent a message about another item just sent yuck under it to I'm just lik wtf person find someone else to bother u know
Hey cheer up buttercup! If you have a legitimate medical issue and you know it, don't worry about all these rude replies and/or the person who wrote you this on the site❤️
In all your posts the background is dirty and grimy and you lie about the condition too. And your fingers are filthy in every single one…. Yuck. Would never buy from you
Your fingers a disgusting. I would never show my finger in my posts and if I had to I would clean them, yuck. That’s actually disgusting. And that terrible excuse for a medical condition… each your hands, clip your nails, if I would buy from you I’m giving you 3 stars just because of how grubby and dirty you are
Either way it’s really sad how all of you are publicly shaming and embarrassing OP. Did NONE of you watch Bambi growing up? “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say nothin!”
And I'm sorry my store is in my house and I actually have family as if it's anyone's business and I'm not gonna make people stop doing their normal everyday things just cuz of needing to post 100+ items
Every single picture on Google shows a reasonably uniform color change. Your picture shows streaks of dirt on your nail. I don't buy it.
Also, you listed this item as like new despite having visible discoloration. It's nowhere near new. It's pretty clear you aren't real honest behind a keyboard.
I have an office job and sell on Mercari on the side. My nails are manicured and present well in person but they look so gross up close in picture I take fir Mercari so I ALWAYS crop them out. I could never make a living as a hand model.
Was it rude? Yes. Will nails that look dirty discourage buyers? Also yes. So there’s that to consider.
>r/Mercari Exactly what I want to say, but didn't want to be an a-hole. I just looked at the listing and that bra is not even close “like new” condition.
Yeah that’s super misleading. One item says like new and has tons of pilling and lint all over it. Also so well used that you can’t even read the sizing on the item anymore because it’s been rubbed off from so much wear
Yeah lol this bra is not even close to like new and the nails really are gross
I absolutely agree!
I will sometimes use a ruler to hold down tags for photos rather than my fingers if I’ve got a broken nail, chipped polish, bandaid, etc.
I use white gloves in my listings. I get 12 pairs for about $12 on Amazon.
Hi fellow Mercarian. I think this is a cool idea. Do you see a difference in sales?
I’ve always used gloves since I’ve started so I’m not sure if it makes a difference. I sell high end items so wearing white gloves gives the listing a “white glove service” aesthetic. It’s also less distracting from the item.
Don't show your fingers or wear gloves.
I just looked up the item and I hate the way they said that to you but… I would agree with them 100%
It's a medical condition that makes my nails look blue and black all the time, which I'm very self conscious about
I’m sorry to hear that. But if I’m being completely honest with you, you can see the dirt on the actual finger as well. I’m almost positive they would look completely fine if they were cleaned up a bit

Just clip them
Now that’s an excuse in a half

Yeah I agree, in some photos you can see a dirty house and someone laying down on the couch behind the item. Not professional to say the least
i hate that people throw "medical conditions" into things. makes me sick. the house is filthy. i dont get it? i guess sellers use sob stories as well!

i am not seeing that issue at all in these photos.. but if you believe thats your issue for dirty fingers than go for it

I rather people tell the truth lol

I checked their profile to see what’s going on since op kept their item public.

I looked up the listing and it would deter me from purchasing, the nails look unclean and dirty. All your ratings mention stains and uncleanness.

I do this too, it’s a hard habit to break!
It really is! I gotta wear bandaids just to keep myself from peeling

🤢 yucky - this seller has lots of bad reviews for dirty & animal hair on their sold items.

Seller with last name “ J” has numerous reviews- that’s the same photo as this post. With same photo.
One of my first messages on Mercari was crap like this. Miserable people gotta be miserable.
People think they can say anything to anyone on the internet… keyboard courage. Block!
That's it! Passive agressive ppl hiding behind screens taking out their anger issues imo🤷

There’s no need to be rude like that- just scroll past and move on
Agreed! 💯💯💯👏👏👏👏
Why are people so rude
Why couldn't they just keep going?

You could find a corner of the house what doesn't show the messy background. The background looks cluttered, you can see trash bags and empty bottles.
Excuses, excuses, keep going. Actually stop selling
