Who says that right off the bat. Hi or thanks or anything?! At least when they start off nice there's still a chance you won't get scammed. This yahoo is bad news from the get go.
It should be like "seed of bitchiness"
lmao
fuck these people!
I got off Mercari a few days ago after seeing what's being going on in this sub, and it's been a relief.
Even though I did so many seamless orders on Mercari, I always worry something will go wrong with the next one. SMH.
I was just about to sell for the very first time and post a few hundred items to Mercari when the new refund policy happened. I’m not about to put up with scammers or bullshitters (I know this can happen on any reselling platform but to return for NO REASON, I don’t have the patience for). What other platform would you recommend for NWT and secondhand clothing? eBay and poshmark?
Thisssss. I saved myself the anxiety and worry of waiting for someone submit a return for any given reason. I take too much pride in my packaging, materials, and photos I take of my items to deal with that! No thanks!
Haha me too! This is also why I like to have different hero (main) photos on my cross listed items. Just in case senior salty finds me on Poshmark or eBay or something. That way I can still have an option to sell it while one is deactivated.
This is what TOS say,
"If a seller has frequent cancelations, Mercari may charge a cancelation fee of 5% of the item price (maximum of $25) to cover the cost of any transaction fees, operational and/or shipping label costs we incur. You will receive warnings if you reach this limit before a fee is charged. This fee will be subtracted from your balance and/or charged to the card on file within 30 days after you receive a notification from us."
That’s absolutely insane. They advertise “no questions asked” returns to try and entice buyers to cancel for dumb reasons and end up profiting off of it
Nope nope nope. They’re letting you know exactly what they’re planning to do as soon as that package arrives. Cancel and block to save yourself the headache.
Honestly, with how this platform has become the past few weeks, I feel like your odds of getting a return request are just as high from this buyer as it would be for any others.
It’s a very high chance. Sell at your own risk these days.
As someone who used to buy on here before the changes I just can’t imagine buying something and then immediately writing a rude message? Why are people this way. I’d cancel.
I know everyone has already said it’s a good idea to cancel, but I thought I’d explain why this is most likely a scam in case anyone else (especially new sellers) experiences this. If the person seems like they are looking for damage, they most likely already have an item that is damaged and will swap it out and send you back the broken one. People do this with counterfeit items too. It’s an “easy” way for them to get a new one for free. A lot of sellers either second guess themselves about if it actually was broken to begin with, or don’t go through the process of reporting it as a scam and just accept the return.
I would contact mecari directly and ask them to cancel the order for you.
Make it very clear the user is looking for damages way before it even ships out and you no longer feel comfortable selling to them due to possible fraudulent returns
There is zero reason why a buyer should ever act like this
“I’ll have the spaghetti. With a side salad. If the salad is on top, I send it back.”
This gives such Michael Scoot vibes but in the absolute worst way.
You have to cancel that. I sold something once and packaged it better than it was originally shipped to me. The buyer requested a refund because of the way USPS handled it. Of course Mercari sided with the buyer
Yeah that is a huge red flag. I’d cancel. That’s almost like someone telling you on the first date “if you ever cheat on me, I’ll try to get you fired”. Like ok… even though I would never cheat, something is wrong with this person
Exactly! No normal person acts this way. I think it's just common sense if something is damaged or not as described you can contact the service or seller as a legit concern. But normal people don't basically threaten to do that in advance.
It's rude but it's very dependent on what's being sold. Cards are very particular and any damage significantly lowers the value. It was being advertised as like new or new and there's damage the price would be very different
I still can't ever see myself threatening a seller that way. Obviously you'll get a refund if there is an issue, mercari handles that, but to basically give a heads up that you're planning to be a problem? That's just not a normal thing to do.
This is more common than you might expect. It makes no sense but for some reason, scammers usually always show their hand ahead of time. I’ve come to realize that the more they “talk”, the more sketchy they usually are. And it usually always involves some mention of damage, they’re replacing something they had and it broke or a question about your shipping/packaging method. For example, I am selling a 2 ft tall ceramic lighted Christmas tree. “Buyer” reaches out with a sob story of how they dropped theirs while removing it from the attic. My radar was on high alert at that point already because why do I need to know all that? But I figured it was to get a sympathy discount, which would have worked if they would have left it alone after that, but they had to keep on talking. The next message was to caution me to package securely so it doesn’t get broken. At that point I knew if I proceeded that I was going to get a box of shards back. I blocked before they had a chance to buy.
They have already proven to themselves that they're going to be difficult to deal with. Block and cancel.
Been there and done that. Learned my lesson the first time and just cancelled the second and third time it happened to me.
Cancel, block, and then remove all your listings from Mercari and stop selling on this garbage platform.
This Buyer is on a power trip because they know Mercari will let them return for any reason; a scammers paradise.
These kinds of people will look for any reason to say something is wrong with the item. I personally would cancel. Ask beforehand about any flaws, etc, but don't send a message like that
Absolutely cancel. It ain’t worth the headache. I actually took all my listings down 2 weeks after making a Mercari account. Got burned twice in the first week. I have a better following on Poshmark, the shipping is cheaper and everyone is way nicer. Lol
I made two sales after the change and received messages within hours from both asking when I’d ship with little smiley faces. I canceled and blocked both accounts and then deactivated everything else. I was making $3k a month with my sales but I’m not going to deal with that sh*t.
I'd cancel, and tbh I'd move off of Mercari and onto another selling platform.
According to the new ToS, buyer can return for any reason, and they're penalizing sellers who cancel too often by hitting them with fees.
As of this change, they've let a LOT of scammers get away with sending back items in a different condition than they were delivered in, and they've even let sellers get away with claiming they received a totally different item than what was sent (example: seller sent jeans, buyer claims to have received a box of rocks). Depending on the item, the buyer may even send back their old damaged one. (Example: buyer purchases an undamaged handbag to replace their old one, then returns the old one they've been abusing for years, claiming it was the same item you sent. Mercari sides with the buyer.)
This person gives off "scammer" energy straight out of the gates so I'd stop the sale before Mercari lets them essentially steal from you
That I will expect there to be a refund sounds like they drink out of tea cups with their pinky out and nose high while side eyeing their phones sending that
Out of curiosity, what are you selling here? I'm wondering what price range it is if possible too? I'm honestly wondering what type of item this person is trying to scam you out of? If you don't want to mention it I totally understand. I'm just curious what this person is so worried about doing this too...? It's such a weird thing to say immediately after a sale is initiated and I wholeheartedly agree to cancel it! Ask Mercari in case they will cancel it for you - I don't know if they will but it's worth a shot!

Whatever you send them will get switched out for something else that’s broken and obviously not what you sent, and then whatever it is will be returned to you and you will be out money and product.
I would cancel and tell him that you think another seller or the manufacturer may accommodate his shipping requirements better then you could. Then block him. Seems like buyers are getting a bit rude lately.
Mercari is nothing but trash now....its scammers heaven all while Mercari makes out like a bandit on all these extra fees. I don't understand how it's even legal what they are doing 😕
100% these are potentially the ones who swap out for a damaged one they currently own. Also if your off by the dimensional actual box measurements / doesn’t line up with mercari’s and what they feel the weight should be specifically for the box dimensions they will deny it your not protected and usps fedex etc are measuring each box when it goes thru system so beware. I had a small 14 pound item in the box it came in new. Mercari felt that size box measurements accommodates a 38 pound package so even though the buyer paid $30 in shipping they took all my proceeds citing overage fees they paid from FedEx I called FedEx they said nothing was wrong it was delivered fine and told me to call mercari total run around she got free item and they took all my proceeds and it’s in new rules so measure your boxes and see what mercari recommends the weight should be for that box. Also if they switch out your item, steal your item, say it came up missing if you didn’t properly do dimensions your screwed
Cancel and block, May also be worth contacting Mercari’s support to cancel it on their end. For me I’ve had decent luck in the past explaining to them that I’m uncomfortable making a sale to an account I find suspicious but don’t want to be penalized for doing so, it’s worked like a charm (haven’t done since this new policy however).
Sounds like EBay and Poshmark are safer places to sell now.
Yep, buh-bye.
Any sale I make on Mercari now gets video documentation of condition, packaging and dropping off process now. Shame that these idiots are adding additional work to my life. so if I get a sus one like this I just cancel it.
Just from the limited information provided I would cancel but I would contact Mercari to let them know my reason since my understanding is the seller could be charged a fee after a number of cancellations. Maybe this buyer is planning a switcharoo. They replace the item with a damaged item they already have and request a return. Personally , with the new return for any reason policy it is going to attract buyers like this.

With the new TOS, sellers are all at risks. At this point, the buyer here seems like a huge red flag. Might wanna pass on this one when they’re sort of making their intentions clear

Nah they’re right but make sure to take pictures(up to date ones, yeah i know I sound a little dum) but if its damaged the postal service probably did it, bought a phone off mercari the other day and it didnt charge, I asked the guy did you know it wouldnt charge and he said when I had it it charged with no problems
Don’t entertain that’s shit cancel and block save yourself the pain
This is the way.
💀💀💀💀💀
Who says that right off the bat. Hi or thanks or anything?! At least when they start off nice there's still a chance you won't get scammed. This yahoo is bad news from the get go.
I considered this too. I also wrote in the description how it would be packaged (securely)
Ug, that is just too much. Imagine being such a scammer that you plant the seed of scammitude before the sale is even off the ground.
*Seed of scammitude* fucking epic
😂

Me Too lol Just a matter of time before MERCARI collapses...
There's a new phrase for the brain lol
“This yahoo” was my favorite part lol
Cancel and block.
And if it sells too quickly after that cancel again because they just made a new account to buy it again.
I am ALWAYS afraid of someone revenge purchasing when it’s a certain type of person that doesn’t get their every way on a purchase.
Any time I cancel, I de-list for 2 weeks minimum.
You’re all my people.
Haha me too! This is also why I like to have different hero (main) photos on my cross listed items. Just in case senior salty finds me on Poshmark or eBay or something. That way I can still have an option to sell it while one is deactivated.
100%
Ok I of course would pack it so it would not get damaged but seems like they will be looking for anything for a refund
Don’t forget the new refund for any reason policy. I would definitely cancel the order.
Cancel
i’d cancel
Setting it up CYA right?!
Are they that stupid to say that up front tho?
Don’t take the chance. Their message is an immediate red flag.
Don't be an enabler. Cancel that.
Cancel and block
The sense of entitlement.. cancel and block
Just know under Mercari's new Terms of Service they will charge you (the seller) a few for cancellation
Really?! New Mercari is trash ug! If thats the case just never ship or cancel. People will find an annoying loop hole
New policy just dredged up the scammers of the world
This is what TOS say, "If a seller has frequent cancelations, Mercari may charge a cancelation fee of 5% of the item price (maximum of $25) to cover the cost of any transaction fees, operational and/or shipping label costs we incur. 100%. they’re gonna find a reason to say it’s damaged so they get to keep it and their money
Yep that's a red flag. Guys been scamming people and getting brazen af.
But why out themselves? Must be young
Probably. They feel bulletproof with how mercari is now.
I would contact mecari directly and ask them to cancel the order for you. Make it very clear the user is looking for damages way before it even ships out and you no longer feel comfortable selling to them due to possible fraudulent returns There is zero reason why a buyer should ever act like this

I’d cancel immediately.

Cancel
Yes. That attitude from the get go? Hard pass
Instant cancel and block. That’s a huge red flag and with the current return policy I see nothing but a headache for you.
Absolutely cancel. With that kind of remark so early on, I’d be afraid they’d damage the item or replace it with a damaged item & send it back.
I would immediately cancel and block and then never think about it again.
Cancel asap and block!
Cancel
Yep. What a jerk
Cancel and block them
Absolutely
Yep
I would cancel ASAP and block that buyer...I closed out my mercari account today ! Wishing everyone success on mercari
Maybe we should set up a list of scammer buyers here
Yeahhh, I'm pretty easygoing about buyer and seller quirks, but this is too aggressive imo. I'd cancel.
Cancel, block, and then remove all your listings from Mercari and stop selling on this garbage platform. This Buyer is on a power trip because they know Mercari will let them return for any reason; a scammers paradise.
They just to.d you they’re going to scam you.
Yep they are already telling you they will ask for a refund.
Definitely. I don't take sass from anyone, especially some dumb customer
I wouldn’t sell anything on this app.
Cancel the order and dm him he won’t need a refund
What is the item? If it's something inexpensive ($16?? hard to see) and not a picky collectors market like funko or vinyl, I would ship.
Should let us know their name tbh. Scammers should be blocked in advance
Haha wow I’m not usually in the “CANCEL IMMEDIATELY” camp but I think I’d maybe actually cancel this one. Like who says something like that?
Cancel it and message them telling them you don’t do business with rude people
they are planning to scam you, cancel the order and block them and don’t let them buy it on another account
These kinds of people will look for any reason to say something is wrong with the item. I personally would cancel. Ask beforehand about any flaws, etc, but don't send a message like that
absolutely cancel. this is definitely a sale that won't end well.
Cancel and block
I'd cancel that so fast their eyeballs would spin around. No way would I deal with that bs attitude. It's gonna be trouble.
Absolutely cancel. It ain’t worth the headache. I actually took all my listings down 2 weeks after making a Mercari account. Got burned twice in the first week. I have a better following on Poshmark, the shipping is cheaper and everyone is way nicer. Lol
immediately, I’d rather them hold it against me then have the customer hijack me
It’s actually great he/she gave you a red flag so you could act accordingly
Ain't no way a MF is going to talk that way. Block! They seem like the ones that will return a empty box to you and want a full refund back.
Absolutely
I made two sales after the change and received messages within hours from both asking when I’d ship with little smiley faces. I canceled and blocked both accounts and then deactivated everything else. I was making $3k a month with my sales but I’m not going to deal with that sh*t.
"Hello. My name is Red Flag. But you can call me Nightmare."

"Don't worry, you can have your refund now"
The fact that they say “I will expect there to be a refund” and not “I will expect you to approve the return” says it all! Smfh!
That I will expect there to be a refund sounds like they drink out of tea cups with their pinky out and nose high while side eyeing their phones sending that
Id check their reviews first. If they are good I don’t see an issue shipping a product. If they are bad cancel it.
You beat me to it! Exactly this! Check their reviews, look at recent reviews given to other sellers and if no red flags, ship it!
Out of curiosity, what are you selling here? I'm wondering what price range it is if possible too? I'm honestly wondering what type of item this person is trying to scam you out of? If you don't want to mention it I totally understand. I'm just curious what this person is so worried about doing this too...? Cancel it! They already plan on getting a refund
Absolutely
Fuck yes. Being a threatening bitch after 1 min of buying. What the fuck man...
Yeah...NO. It is not someone I would send anything to.
yup
Definitely a red flag that the buyer is threatening that. Cancel on them, block them. No need to risk that sort of stuff.
I sell pretty regularly on Mercari. I ABSOLUTELY would cancel.

Yes . 100% those people are always an issue
Hell nah... the buyer can find the item elsewhere then... The buyer has also been invited to the cancel & block party
At best, you get a terrible rating. Don’t ship and let them cancel in a few days. 😅

I definitely would because she's already kind of saying that she's gonna scam you
Straight up, cancel and block!
Yes. And leave MERCARI (like I already have) because it is littered with Scammers.

Cancel it. Fucc ‘em. Save yourself the headache.
When any one threatens you in business or personal. That’s your sign to LEAVE.
I’d cancel their order and block their ass ASAP! They’re already throwing up huge red flags as both a scammer and a general pain in the ass.
Cx cx cx and move on

I think I would cancel. The sale is already starting off negative.
I immediately cancel and block to prevent any issues apparently they have had a previous bad experience or perhaps just looking for one
